As early explorers and pioneersmigrated west the state of Missouriwas formed and divided into anumber of counties. Originally inhabitedby the Osage Indians, settlers soon arrived,attracted by the woodedforests and intriguinglandscape of rollinghills, valleys, and caves.Pulaski County wasrecognized in 1833 bythe State Legislaturein honor of CountPulaski, a Polish Patriot.In 1838, the CherokeeIndians traveled acrossthe area on their ‘Trailof Tears” to Oklahoma.The area witnessed theera of the stagecoach,the Civil War, the rise of the railroad, and thedevelopment of Route 66.Waynesville is the oldest town in PulaskiCounty, established in 1843 primarilyby pioneers arriving from the South.Waynesville derived its name from the famousRevolutionary War hero “Mad Anthony”Wayne. The town originated as a trading postfor fur traders and trappers and eventuallybecame an agricultural community. Mostlocal residents were farmers, but manysupplemented their income by cutting trees tomake railroad ties for the local railroad.As America’s boundaries shifted west.Waynesville became an important stagecoachstop for pioneers. The pre Civil War OldStagecoach Stop still stands on the eastside of the courthouse square in downtownWaynesville. It is the oldest building inPulaski County and is listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places. The OldStagecoach Stop served as a hotel, tavern anda post office for travelers on the St. Louis toHISTORYSpringfield Road.The fourth Pulaski County Courthouse was builtin 1903 for $10.200. It is used as a museum todayand stands next to the Pulaski County Courthousein Waynesville, MO.Waynesville was designated as the countyseat. The first sessions of court were in privatehomes. The first log courthouse in PulaskiCounty was built in 1837 on the south sideof the square. Threeyears later in 1840 itwas replaced by a brickbuilding that was badlyburned in the Civil War.A third brick buildingwas built and burnedin 1903. It was replacedby the Old Courthouse,which today housesa museum featuringPulaski County artifacts,including blacksmithand carpentry tools,quilts, school materialsand Civil War era items.The current $4.4 million, 50,000 squarefoot Pulaski County Courthouse opened inJanuary of 1990. It is listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places.The Civil War had a dramatic affect onWaynesville. The area was predominantlySouthern territory at the start of the war, butmany residents avoided joining the battle.Its location on the Old Wire Road placedWaynesville in the middle of the supply routeon which the Union Army moved men andsupplies.The arrival of the Union Army and itsestablishment of a fort on the bluffoverlooking the Roubidoux Spring forcedlocals to pick their allegiances. The oncepeaceful agricultural community soon foundthemselves at odds with neighbors and familymembers.Continued on page 1210
