Theatre Calgary - Shakespeare on the go
‘Travelling Medieval Theatre’
These costumes will capture the essence of medieval and Elizabethan era
theatre. Pageantry and comedy are embodied in the colours and
execution of the costumes. Rather than building historically accurate
garments we will build basic cotton jumpsuits with costume details
‘painted’ on them. These light cotton costumes will have large centre
front zippers to facilitate quick changes, and are machine washable.
Our costumes are not pretending to be the real thing, instead they are
projecting a broad comedic over the top version of a serious costume.
Our Falstaff will require some fat padding. His base costume
is a simple cotton jumpsuit with a zip front. We should
consider adding seams at the side fronts to accommodate
fitting changes with the fat padding.
Optional Cloak when we
introduce the audience to
Falstaff. Shows him
parading around with false
dignity. It is also something
fun to flourish around
Falstaff in disguise
I think an oversized cloak
is nice for dressing
‘onstage’
Master Ford in Scarlet to signify his passion and high
temper. Very ornate and over the top decoration to signify
his wealth and station. Simple zipfront jumpsuit, skirt panels
sandwiched in waist seam, and arm décor sandwiched in
sleeve head. Elastic in hem of pant.
Mistress Ford in Coral, a colour which represents desire.
Medieval style sleeves, extra large to accommodate the long
sleeves of an underdressed costume. We expect to see
underdressed costume (not hidden). Waist seam and
darting in bodice for shaping. Slight gathering in skirt. All
décor painted on. Hat can be cut if there is no time for
quickchanges.
Mistress Page has elaborate sleeves which are a part of her
underdressed costume. The dress is sleeveless with ruff
painted onto collar, zip front, waist seam and darts in
bodice. Headpiece can be cut if needed for quickchanges.
Master Page is built over the base costume for Robin, his
costume is a cape with a built in high collar which has a ruff
painted on it. The hat is typical of the Elizabethan era and
will help to differentiate him from his other characters
The men who are travelling with
Falstaff are all in different variations
of ochre and blue to tie them
together.
Mistress Quickly is in a shorter skirt than Mistress Page and
Wing capes to be very simple build, simple serge finished edges, and the underside will be left as
white fabric. (ie:not bagged out)
‘Fairies styled as jester
Falstaff is has cap with horns, the cape of the hat mimics the style of a jester as he is playing the
