Style Magazine - April 2023

Whether you love, like, or loathe camping, this month’s feature, “Thrive Outside!” will likely have you itching (and not because of mosquitos!) to go. Turn to page 79 for a roundup of the region’s best camping and glamping spots, helpful hacks for camping with kids, a spotlight on a Placer County-based business that rents out refurbished (and fully furnished!) campervans, and more. In the spirit of birds, bees, and butterflies, check out “Spring Bucket List” (page 16) for 10 wonderful ways to welcome the warmer weather (like sipping farm-to-bottle beers in a barn-turned-brewery setting); “Here Comes the Sun!” (page 54) for 11 outdoor essentials sold at mom-and-pop shops; and the Calendar (page 28) for over 15 can’t-miss alfresco events, including a garden tour, wine and food festival, and an all-you-can-eat taco throwdown that promises to be muy bueno. Here’s to soaking up the fresh green of spring—whether it’s sleeping under the stars, drinking at outdoor bars, or reading this month’s magazine beneath a big blue sky. Cheers!

Ihave a love/hate relationship with
camping.
While some of my fondest memories
have taken place in the great outdoors,
so have some I’d rather forget—like the
time my husband and I thought we’d
prepared for and packed everything, only to
discover upon setting up camp that our tent
poles were MIA. Using the (natural) resources
around us—pine trees—as makeshift poles, we
pitched the rainfly over our Tacoma’s truck bed
and bunked up in the back. Did I mention we
also forgot our pillows?
But the backaches didn’t deter us from going
on another adventure—this time with a pottytraining
toddler and teething infant in tow.
Covered in dirt and bug bites, with bags under
our eyes, we left the campground vowing never to go again.
Never say never. Mere months later we found ourselves checking into an RV park
along the Russian River. Instead of an RV, however, our family of four “slept” (maybe
two hours, tops) in a two-person backpacking tent. While we ventured off to our
polyester palace, our relatives—who begged us to come on the trip—slept soundly
on memory-foam mattresses in their temperature-controlled trailers.
But despite the uncomfortable (both physical and mental) moments that every
camping trip brings, each one also comes with plenty of positives. Stepping away
from screens and getting nurtured by nature kindles connection (to the people you’re
with), appreciation (for the great outdoors—and
“There’s a
whole world
out there,
right outside
your window.
You’d be a fool
to miss it.”
—Charlotte Eriksson
the creature comforts typically taken for granted),
and a sense of renewal. Add to that golden brown,
borderline burnt marshmallows, a picture-perfect
setting (water, wildflowers, and trees please!) and
a side of stargazing, and the pros suddenly seem to
outweigh the cons. Also, is it just me, or does food
taste better when it’s cooked over a campfire?
Whether you love, like, or loathe camping, this
month’s feature, “Thrive Outside!” will likely have
you itching (and not because of mosquitos!) to go.
Turn to page 79 for a roundup of the region’s best
camping and glamping spots, helpful hacks for
camping with kids, a spotlight on a Placer County-based business that rents out
refurbished (and fully furnished!) campervans, and more.
In the spirit of birds, bees, and butterflies, check out “Spring Bucket List” (page
16) for 10 wonderful ways to welcome the warmer weather (like sipping farm-tobottle
beers in a barn-turned-brewery setting); “Here Comes the Sun!” (page 54) for
11 outdoor essentials sold at mom-and-pop shops; and the Calendar (page 28) for over
15 can’t-miss alfresco events, including a garden tour, wine and food festival, and an
all-you-can-eat taco throwdown that promises to be muy bueno.
Here’s to soaking up the fresh green of spring—whether it’s sleeping under the
stars, drinking at outdoor bars, or reading this month’s magazine beneath a big blue
sky. Cheers!
#What’sUp?
New Coming
by MEGAN WISKUS
Soon
New&
Alchemy Surf Park, an innovative mixeduse
commercial oasis anchored around the
activities of surfing, health, wellness, and
adrenaline-inspired outdoor recreation, is in
the early planning phases for Placer County.
Created by El Dorado County-based Inland
Surf Company (inlandsurfcompany.com), the
project—scheduled to open near the Highway
65 corridor and still years away—may likely
be the first of its kind in Northern California.
Folsom welcomed T&5 Bakery (t5bakery.
com) to 195 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 100.
Known for their Asian-inspired pastries,
cakes, and extensive boba tea menu, the
café will eventually offer dim sum, too.
Construction is underway at The Shops at
Folsom Ranch—planned for the Highway
50 and East Bidwell Street interchange—
and two businesses have signed leases:
Bento Box (bentoboxmidtown.com), which
has three existing locations in Sacramento
and serves sushi, teriyaki plates, their
namesake bento boxes, and more; and
Slice House (slicehouse.com), a fastcasual
eatery from restaurateur Tony
Gemignani that offers New York, Sicilian,
Grandma, Detroit, and California-style
pizzas (by the slice or whole)—including
gluten-free and vegan choices—
along with local craft beers, pastas,
salads, wings, meatballs, and more.
Stop by Ponderosa Cider Co. (ponderosacider.
com) at 102 Gum Lane, Suite B, in Auburn to
taste an array of hard ciders in an intimate
ambiance. Current draft offerings include
“Pineapple Crush,” a tangy blend of apples and
pineapple; “Sangria De Sidra,” featuring freshpressed
Navel oranges, Meyer lemons, and a
touch of apricot with a spice blend; and “The
Duchess,” made with a blend of heritage apples.
A 3,322-square-foot brewery is coming
to the Folsom Historic District. First
responder-themed Uncle Charlie's
Firehouse & Brew will offer craft beer
and hard seltzers and be sited at 905
Leidesdorff Street (attached to the
public parking garage). If all goes
according to schedule, the establishment
should open in early 2024.
Stop by the newly opened Dosa Biryanizz
Chaat Café (dosabiryanizz.com) at 8121
Madison Avenue, Suite G4, in Fair Oaks
for authentic, full-flavored South Indian
fare (samosas, dosas, butter chicken,
paneer biryani, and more) with ample
vegan and vegetarian options.
Dog Haus (doghaus.com), an award-winning
concept known for its gourmet hot dogs,
sausages, and burgers, as well as plant-based
and fried chicken creations, is scheduled to
open this month at 1501 Blue Oaks Boulevard
in Roseville’s Campus Oaks Center (anchored by
Nugget Markets). The outpost boasts over 20
beers including two nitro offerings (and wine!)
on tap, 10 TVs, and a roll-up garage door that
opens the restaurant up to a spacious patio.
Lupine Paradise
by Bill Wages
Peruse works from 20 local artists at the newly opened For the Love of Art Gallery
(fortheloveofartgallery.com)—located in Downtown Auburn at 882 Lincoln Way and
open daily. The elegant, relaxed gallery also features a guest artist every month.
All-you-can-eat restaurant K-Town Korean BBQ
& Sushi is coming to 1137 Roseville Square.
Expect sushi and hot pot (where patrons will
pick their preferred ingredients—seafood,
pork, chicken, lamb, beef, veggies, etc.—from
a buffet line to boil or BBQ at their table) in
addition to beer, wine, and soju-based cocktails.
The El Dorado Hills Town Center is welcoming
Teaspoon (teaspoonlife.com) to its dining directory.
Sited at 4420 Town Center Boulevard, Suite 110,
the trendy café will serve sweet treats (cakes,
macarons, and brownies), eclectic coffee drinks,
and handcrafted boba tea in friendly environs.
Dignity Health (dignityhealth.org)
opened Express Primary Care at 3980
Douglas Boulevard, Suite 110. The
clinic features same-day, walk-in visits
Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.,
and virtual care with extended hours
from 5-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Toll Brothers (tollbrothers.com/ca), the nation’s leading builder of luxury homes, has
a new gated community of 90 single-family homes starting at $1 million in El Dorado
Hills. Hidden Ridge, located at 7044 Grand Teton Drive, includes modern floor plans
ranging from 3,000-4,000+ square feet, expansive backyards, and multi-car garages.
Photos courtesy of their respective companies or organizations.
Mantra (mantraindian.com), a vegan and vegetarian
eatery, opened at 1870 Prairie City Road, Suite
500, in Folsom. Founded by the same owners as
Sanskrit (sanskritindian.com), their newest venture
features fresh, healthy South Indian-inspired
cuisine, including dosas, idlis, soups, and more.
It Takes a Village (ittakesavillageworkandplay.
com)—a unique space that provides
comfortable, productive workspaces
(private offices, dedicated desks, open
seating, and conference rooms) along with
on-site childcare staffed by experienced
caregivers—is scheduled to open July 1 in
Cameron Park (2555 Greenwood Lane).
Fast-casual restaurant Mendocino Farms
(mendocinofarms.com), with local outposts
in Sacramento and Roseville, is expanding to
Folsom. Known for their vibrant sandwiches,
salads, soups, and sides with big, bold
flavors and from-the-earth ingredients,
the new location at 165 Placerville Road
is scheduled to open this summer.
10 Spot
Spring Bucket List
by CAITLIN MCCULLOCH
Pioneer Village
Pretty Lil Picnic
April showers bring May
flowers—but there’s plenty
of non-rainy moments to
be had this month, too! Whether
you’re looking for family time, a
date idea, or something solo where
you can connect with nature, here
are a few local ideas to help you
celebrate spring.
SOAK IN THE SUN (AND
HISTORY)
Step back in time at Folsom’s
Pioneer Village, where you can
learn trade skills through weekly
family craft activities. On the
second Saturday of every month,
you can also partake in the Sutter
Hidden Falls Regional Park
High-Hand Café
UC Davis Arboretum
Street Walking Tour to learn what’s
changed over the years—and
what’s stayed exactly the same.
BOOK A FANCY PICNIC
Picnics are magical, but sometimes
the setup and planning aspect
feel less-than-ideal. Indulge your
bougie side while enjoying some
fresh air with some of our area’s
luxury picnic planners. A Picnic in
the Park (apicnicinthepark.com)
offers various packages, from simple
(includes everything but the food)
to premium (includes grazing boxes,
drinks, dessert, Polaroid camera kit,
and giant Jenga); Pretty Lil Picnic
(prettylilpicnic.com) offers amenities
like a custom message board, selfie
tripod, and Bluetooth speaker;
while Pop-up Picnic Sacramento
(popuppicnicsac.com) puts together
personalized picnics with a teepee,
boho umbrella, basket of games, and
optional add-ons like a charcuterie
board, dessert tower, and more.
WANDER AMONGST
WILDFLOWERS
The Sierra Foothills is bursting with
beautiful blooms to explore, take
photos of, and soak in. Their colors
range from purple and orange to
yellow and red. The Confluence Trail
(visitplacer.com/discover/confluencetrail),
located near Auburn and about
3.5 miles round-trip, is the perfect
place to take in scenic views; plus,
it’s dog-friendly if your furry friend
stays on a leash, so they can stop and
smell the flowers, too. Other top spots
to put a spring in your step? Hidden
Falls Regional Park, Folsom Lake State
Recreation Area, and Cronan Ranch
Regional Trails Park.
GO BIRDING
Thanks to the abundance of trees
and foliage in our area, we also have
an abundance of birds. If you’re
new to birding, El Dorado Birds
(eldoradobirds.com) has compiled
an extensive list of the best birdwatching
locales in our area. At the
top of it is Brown’s Ravine, which
is part of the Folsom Lake State
Recreation Area and boasts birds like
woodpeckers, songbirds, and raptors.
But there are tons of other spots
to see our feathered friends, too,
from the Dave Moore Nature Area,
to the UC Davis Arboretum, Sly Park
Recreation Area, and El Dorado Trail.
BRUNCH IT UP
Sure, you may have visited a nursery
before for some pretty greenage—
but have you dined amongst one?
Step inside a gorgeous greenhouse
in the middle of Loomis’ High-Hand
Nursery for brunch at High-Hand
Café. Delectable dishes are made
from local, farm-fresh ingredients
(some of their eggs come from
Newcastle’s Maple Rock Gardens).
Dining is available six days a week,
but if you’re heading there for
weekend brunch, look forward to
PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF
It’s time to dust those putters
off! With so many public courses
in our region, golfing is the
perfect outing for a sunny day.
Check out The Ridge Golf Course
& Events Center (ridgegc.com) in
Auburn, Folsom’s Empire Ranch
Golf Club (empireranchgolfclub.
com), and Lincoln’s Turkey
Creek Golf Club (turkeycreekgc.
com). If you prefer less walking
with plenty of music, food,
and drinks, hit a few shots at
Roseville’s TopGolf (topgolf.com).
DRINK A COLD ONE
Newcastle’s Hillenbrand Farmhaus
Brewery (hillenbrandbrewery.
com) brings a whole new meaning
to grabbing a beer and hanging
outside. Sitting on 13 acres, the
sprawling property grows their own
fruit and hops, plus they harvest
their beehive honey, bringing
you the ultimate farm-to-bottle
experience. Visitors can look
forward to sips like the lower ABV
“Pineapple Express” and a dark ale
“French Press,” which is made with
Guatemalan coffee beans.
GET BACK ON YOUR BIKE
Bust out the bikes! Riding
around the neighborhood is
perfectly acceptable, but if
The Ridge Golf Course &
Events Center
you’re up for a challenge,
you can’t go wrong with the
American River Bike Trail
(regionalparks.saccounty.gov/
parks/pages/jedediahsmith.
aspx). Also known as the
Jedediah Smith Trail, it runs
the span of Beal’s Point in
Folsom all the way to Discovery
Park in Sacramento and is one
of our region’s crown jewels.
The entire length is roughly 32
miles, so we won’t blame you for
only taking on a portion of it.
VISIT APPLE HILL (FOR
MORE THAN JUST
APPLES!)
This gorgeous area isn't just an
activity for fall. Boa Vista Orchards
(boavista.com) is open 363 days a
year for visitors to sip cider and
munch on baked goods among the
fresh air. There are also plenty
of wineries to check out. Enjoy a
vino tasting while taking in some
incredible alfresco views seven
days a week at Lava Cap Winery
(lavacap.com).
HEAD OUT FOR A HIKE
Take in nature while getting
your steps in. There’s no
shortage of hikes around us,
but a favorite is Hidden Falls
Trail (placer.ca.gov/6106/
hidden-falls-regional-park)
in Auburn—a three-mile,
family-friendly loop where you
can hear relaxing water and
eventually see a waterfall.
Research shows that learning arts subjects alongside math, history, science and
Weavers of
Wonderment
Spotlight on Fiber Artists
by HEATHER L. NELSON
From felted wool wearables to surreal silk paintings and
woven mixed media works, these fabulous fiber artists
are highlighting the natural world in freshly fierce ways.
Merridee Joan Smith
Merridee Joan Smith
merrideejoan.com
A career forensic scientist,
fiber arts brings color, texture,
comfort, and pleasure into
Merridee Joan Smith’s life. “Art
requires passion to take one’s
experiences and render in some
personal form,” shares Smith.
“Science and art require similar
attributes, [which is] how I view
my artistic process: a wonder
of the world, creativity, serious
study, and the ability to observe
closely.”
What’s challenging about
fiber arts?
Although ancient fiber pieces
have been discovered intact,
it’s well-known that bright light
can damage a piece, so you
must be aware of framing and
preservation techniques and
let clients know how to care for
pieces.
What do you enjoy most
about the medium?
I love the history, beauty, tactile
quality, and variety of fiber arts.
Just touching the silk, wool,
and other beautiful fibers is
delightful.
What inspires you?
the outdoors. My creations—paintings,
botanical prints, and felted pieces—are
inspired by the beauty outside my
door in the Sierra Nevada, as well as by
the gardens and scenes of my travels.
natural materials like wool roving is
amazing. What starts as fluff becomes
a solid fabric; [it’s] magic! Botanical
and natural dying is always a surprise.
Leaves will print strong and bright in
the fall, and the same tree—months
later—will have different results.
I’ve learned to let go; surprises are
embraced, and disappointments turn
into wonderful learning experiences.
How did you develop your skills?
As a teen, I had trouble finding clothes
I liked in stores, so I’d sew my own or
alter what I found in thrift stores, which
led to a love of sewing costumes,
getting whimsical, and creating
my own crazy patterns. Fifteen
years ago, I discovered felting wool
and was hooked; since it required
particular color palettes, [it forced
me] to experiment with natural
dyeing and printing using leaves,
flowers, stems, mushrooms, and
lichens.
Friends for 40 years, Deb Cashatt
and Kris Sazaki (aka, “The
of collaborating after 20 years
of building their artistic brand.
“Neither one of us would have
started on this path without the
support of the other—we’re braver,
hold each other accountable,
and have complementary
perspectives,” says Sazaki.
What about fiber arts do
you love?
Fabric is tactile—we love running
our hands over the finished pieces.
stitching, this medium adds another
dimension to our work. Often
focused on issues of social justice,
our portraits of women highlight
their courageous lives—whether
advocate, activist, or artist.
What are your most
cherished pieces?
The Fragility of Home is our latest
style of work. We still use modern
technology to print and collage text,
but we started using traditional quilt
patterns to tell part of the story.
Has creating as a team been
challenging?
How we settle on a topic is often the
result of hours-long, if not days-long,
negotiation. But it’s that give and take
that helps us create artwork we can
both be proud of. Don’t be fooled
though—we’ve sat on projects
for years, because we couldn’t
come to an agreement on how
to execute certain ideas.
Isabel Ryder
isabelryder.com
First working with fibers
50 years ago as a graduate
student, Isabel Ryder is
continuing her artistic
exploration after retiring
from a rewarding educational
career. “I’m starting a series
combining wire sculptures
with fiber coiled baskets, and
the challenges invigorate my
creative spirit,” reveals Ryder.
“The [most] exciting aspect of
fiber arts is I can always go in a
Isabel Ryder
different direction each time I approach the
medium.”
Where do you seek inspiration?
I see fiber patterns in nature,
manufacturing, and everyday life. I love
texture and color, so working with fiber is a
natural connection to my studio work. What
draws me to the medium is also interwoven
with the challenges. Cotton fabric is much
easier to work with than silk; knowing that
leads me to sew the silk to a canvas before
stretching it.
What pieces are especially
noteworthy?
I’ve been weaving together canvas paintings
for many years. The lively, vibrant results
surprise and delight. I enjoy experimenting
with various
cores to create
specific shapes and
forms of baskets
and continually
look for ways to
interweave fiber in
interesting ways.
Do you have
any advice
for aspiring
artists?
Experiment with
as many types
of fiber and
processes, and
study from as
many cultures
as you can. The
amazing quilts I’ve
seen with painterly subjects—like
a guitarist or raging creeks—all
contribute to the boundless
directions to go in fiber arts.
Spring Into
Wellness
Tips to Stay Healthy This Season
by MELISSA STRAND
As you’re scrubbing floorboards
and clearing closets to bring an
external sense of renewal and
calm this spring, give your mind,
body, and soul a good cleansing
as well. We asked area experts
on the best ways to bring more
sunshine into your life this season.
Get Connected
“Find a support system that will encourage you
to stay on track with your [fitness] goals. Whether
it's a group of friends, your workout buddies, or
family, let others know about what you’re trying to
accomplish.”—Jamie Ellsworth, Head Coach, FIIT
Nation El Dorado Hills, fiitnation.com
Declutter
“Clearing out physical clutter helps bring mental
clarity and focus and decreases dust buildup,
which can help reduce allergy and asthma
symptoms. Start with one desk drawer or an
area of a room and build from there.”—Sara
Aghamohammadi, MD, Chief Wellness Officer, UC
Davis Health, health.ucdavis.edu
Let’s Go!
“Moving your body and challenging your muscles is
empowering. You build self-confidence, improve your
long-term health, reduce stress and risk of injury, and
feel better overall. Find a program that excites you,
and get moving.” —Jamie Ellsworth, Head Coach, FIIT
Nation El Dorado Hills, fiitnation.com
Small Changes = Big Rewards
“A small change in your diet can improve your
health and help the environment, too. Substitute
half a serving of processed meat and beef per day
with an equal caloric value of nuts, vegetables,
fruits, legumes, and low-environmental-impact
seafood for nutritional health gains and 33% carbon
footprint reductions. Consistently maintaining
small changes to your dietary habits is less mentally
and physically taxing than revamping your entire
diet.”—Sara Aghamohammadi, MD, Chief Wellness
Officer, UC Davis Health, health.ucdavis.edu
Choose Healthy Alternatives
“Eliminate or greatly reduce flour, sugar, and
alcohol. Start small and make healthy swaps
Imagine a world where people of all abilities
have equal access to employment.
This Big Day of Giving, you can help create that world.
A job means so much more than a paycheck; it also has the power to bring connection,
community, and purpose. Today, thousands of people with disabilities in the Sacramento
region are unemployed. Your donations make it possible for people of all abilities to
experience the dignity of a paycheck and the pride that comes with meaningful work.
Building inclusivity, one job at a time.
Show your support and donate now!
| health & wellness |
like drinking sparkling water instead of wine or beer. Your
cholesterol and glucose levels will naturally decrease
over time and hopefully prevent coronary artery and
neurovascular disease.”—Aly V. Johnston, FNP-BC, Well by AM
Nursing, Inc., wellbyamnursing.com
Take a “Snacktivity Break”
“New research shows exercise ‘snacks,’ which consist of brief
spurts of exertion spread throughout the day, can improve
metabolic health, raise endurance, and stave off some of the
undesirable changes in our muscles that otherwise occur
when we sit too long.”—Sara Aghamohammadi, MD, Chief
Wellness Officer, UC Davis Health, health.ucdavis.edu
Sleep Hygiene
“Try not to look at a backlit screen for 45 minutes prior to falling
asleep and change your pillowcases at least once a week. If you
[still] have difficulty falling or staying asleep, fixing it may be
as simple as hormone or neurotransmitter testing.”—Michele
Wilkerson, ND, Revolutions Naturopathic, revolutionsdocs.com
Time for a Check Up
“Put a plan in place with your primary care physician
to keep your quality of life at its maximum potential.
An annual physical is an important part of that overall
plan. Your doctor will provide a baseline so you can
monitor how things change as you age. This knowledge
and understanding of that baseline is what we all rely
on to formulate a plan of care when you’re not feeling
well.”—Sam Ceridon, MD, Marshall Family Medicine,
marshallmedical.org
Mind Your Mind
“Try meditating outside in your yard or patio. Practice by
looking at the sky, the trees and spring blossoms, and listening
to the birds chirping. We’re often too busy or in a hurry to even
notice these things, and it will bring you a sense of peace and
lift your spirit. Even 5-10 minutes will make a difference in your
day.”—Therese Sorrentino, LMFT, theresesorrentinomft.com
Increase Your H2O
“As the weather warms up and you become more active, it’s
time to think about increasing your daily water intake. Staying
hydrated improves physical performance and helps prevent
fatigue, supports weight loss, boosts your mood, improves
your brain power, prevents headaches, and protects against
disease.”—Pamela Connor, Functional Nutritionist, Connor
Wellness Clinic, connorwellnessclinic.com
Reach Out for Support
“There’s a difference between feeling sad sometimes and
being depressed. Most of us get the blues from time to time,
but if either depression or anxiety are interfering with your
daily life, you should see a therapist. Cognitive behavioral
therapy and learning some coping skills can be very
helpful.”—Therese Sorrentino, LMFT, theresesorrentinomft.
com
Less (Screen Time) is More
“Reduce screen time by 30 minutes and instead add 30
minutes of exercise—whether it’s going for a walk, bike
ride, dancing in your living room, etc. Less screen time
usually leads to more movement and interactions with
others. Making social connections boosts your mood
and improves your health on many levels.”—Pamela
Connor, Functional Nutritionist, Connor Wellness Clinic,
connorwellnessclinic.com
Carbs Are Your Companion
“We all know exercising is important, but eating carbs—
potatoes, yams, rice, and pasta, along with fruits and
vegetables—is also essential. As our primary source of energy
(for body and brain), consuming them improves your overall
physical and mental health. [Contrary to what many people
think], they also don't make you gain weight—eating more
calories than you burn does.”—David Greene, Nasm-CPT, PES,
Scotts Flat Trail
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATED IN:
Nevada City.
DISTANCE:
7.1 miles out-and-back.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Moderate.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
This is a popular trail for
mountain biking, so listen
carefully and be prepared
to move out of the way.
Expect crowds, especially
come summertime. Dogs are
welcome, when leashed, but
may not be a good option with
the bikers. Wear shoes with
traction and lots of layers; pack
plenty of water and, as always,
leave no trace.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
On warmer days, access to the
Scotts Flat Reservoir is ideal for
a midway dip. There are boat
rentals at the reservoir, too, and
a small store for drinks. The trail
has plenty of shade, nice views,
and boasts enough mileage to
work up a sweat (and appetite!).
FUEL UP:
Northridge of Nevada City
(northridgerestaurant.com) is a
classic, small-town restaurant
that has something for
everyone: salads, sandwiches,
burgers, and pizzas. With
a laid-back ambience, it’s a
perfect post-hike place for a
pint (or pitcher!) and a bite. Be
sure to check their website for
weekly specials, too, like “Burger
Mondays,” “Pizza Tuesdays,”
“BBQ Thursdays,” and “Fish
Fridays.”
Essential
Hiking
Gear
Here are a few
must-haves to
always carry in
your pack:
▼
Navigation
Whether your
phone or a physical
map, make sure
you have a way of
identifying your
position. A backup
charger is a good
idea if you rely on
your phone.
▼
First aid kit
Make sure you’re
prepared for minor
scrapes, blisters,
and bruises.
Moleskin is a must!
▼
Sunscreen
No one likes to be
burnt.
▼
Knife
This will come in
handy for many
situations.
▼
Extra food
Keep some snacks
on hand in case of
an emergency.
▼
Extra water/water
filter
▼
Extra clothes
▼
Emergency shelter
and space blanket
▼
Headlamp
This will make your
life much better
when you need it.
Do
you have a
favorite trail in the
region you’d like to see
featured? Tell us all
COOL STUFF
Let’s Play
Pickleball!
by TERRY CARROLL
Pickleball is all the rage, but
did you know cool gear exists,
too? Play in style with these
pickleballer-approved items.
Paddle
Old guard Selkirk Sport and
relative newcomer JOOLA are
the paddle brands most of
the pros play with. Both offer
numerous models; of course,
grip size and feel will help
you make the right decision.
There are lots of other brands,
too, and for the casual player, many other good
choices. The question of materials is easy: get
graphite! joolausa.com; selkirk.com
Bag
Unless you’re a touring
pro, you really don’t need
that big of a bag. One of
my favorites is a simple
sling bag that will hold your
paddle, balls, wallet, keys,
and all the other necessities.
Keep it simple and move it
around the car, home, and
court with a sling bag from JOOLA. They offer
several options, so do some shopping and have
some fun. joola.com
Playing
The pickleball revolution
is very much alive, and
there are lots of places
to play, but if you’re
looking for that country
club feel (who isn’t?),
then look at Spare Time
Sports Clubs. They offer special membership
pricing for pickleball players at Johnson Ranch
Sports Club in Roseville, Broadstone Sports Club
in Folsom, and Gold River Sports Club. Dink to
your hearts delight! sparetimesportsclubs.com
Q: What approach should those
new to wine take to discover
what they like?
A: Getting into wine can be
intimidating—there's a lot of
different types and styles to
choose from. My suggestion? Go
out tasting at local wineries and
try everything you can. It will help
you develop your palate and figure
out what wines you like (and don’t
like). Finally, go into it with an open
mind; you’ll be pleasantly surprised
by what you find.
Clean
Sweep
Housekeeping How-Tos
by KOURTNEY JASON
S
pring cleaning. Those two words often trigger
panic, stress, and anxiety. But spring cleaning
doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore, says
Renee Miesse, owner of Got It Maid Domestic Agency
(gotitmaidhousecleaning.com). “Get the family together,
turn on your favorite music, and plan a nice reward at
the end of the day,” she says. Miesse recommends a deep
clean at least once a year. “More often is even better,” she
says. Colleen Benson Rathe, owner of Village General
Store & Refillery (villagegeneralstore.co), likes to use the
changing of seasons as a reminder to perform certain
home maintenance and recommends three or four
thorough cleanings a year.
Whether you’re overwhelmed by where to begin or
ready to tackle every nook and cranny, we asked the
experts for their top tips and tricks on getting your home
clean, organized, and functional this spring.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
“Start by decluttering and organizing. Go through junk
drawers, makeup drawers, your home office, closets,
etc., and get rid of expired items or things you no longer
want/need,” Miesse says. Rathe agrees. “Take stock of
what you have. [Doing so] will reduce the likelihood of
redundant purchases in the future, which lead to more
clutter and waste,” Rathe says. “If you're on the fence
about getting rid of items, place them in a purgatory box.
If you don't reach for them within six months, it’s time
for them to find a new home.” While organizing, don’t
neglect the fridge and pantry, either. “Take everything
out, wipe shelves down, check
expiration dates, and then put
everything back in an organized
and categorized fashion,” suggests
Gabi Miszti, owner and founder of
Organizing Beyond Expectations
(organizingbeyondexpectations.com).
Before throwing unwanted
items away or donating to charity,
Rathe encourages you to “utilize
local groups (like Buy Nothing and
Facebook Marketplace) or turn to
your social circle to find them new
homes.” And if you must dispose
of products? “Utilize websites like
how2recycle.info or calrecycle.ca.gov
to find out how to responsibly do so.”
OFTEN-FORGOTTEN
TASKS
While the obvious places
(kitchen, living room, bedrooms,
bathrooms) and tasks (vacuuming,
mopping, etc.) are probably part
of your regular cleaning routine,
spring is the perfect time to pay
attention to other, often-forgotten
places that collect grit and grime.
“Work from top to bottom.
Start with cobwebbing, cleaning
vents, taking down light fixtures,
and cleaning fans,” Miesse says.
“This is also a good time to change
batteries in smoke detectors and
carbon monoxide detectors and
replace furnace filters.”
Other commonly forgotten
areas? The refrigerator and
washer/dryer. “Remove the lower
cover in your fridge, vacuum any
dust that has accumulated, and
clean the gasket,” Miesse says.
“Be sure to move the washer and
dryer out and clean the floor/walls
behind them.”
According to Miszti, “The
primary suite walk-in closet
is an area nobody [typically]
cleans, even housekeepers.” She
suggests emptying the entire
closet then wiping down shelves
and light fixtures, and vacuuming
baseboards and the carpet. “It’s
incredible to see how much dust
can accumulate in an area that
everybody tends to forget. I reset
mine at least twice a year.”
| home & garden |
Remember: Cleaning and
maintenance go hand in hand.
This includes regular care of
things like cast iron cookware,
raw/unsealed wood cutting
boards or utensils, mortar and
pestle, and knives. “These items
require conditioning, seasoning,
oiling, and/or sharpening. Yes,
it takes extra effort, but you’ll
lengthen their lifespan, which
saves you money and saves them
from the landfill,” Rathe says.
COMMON CLEANING
MISTAKES
Most people underestimate
the time it will take to do a
thorough cleaning. To make it
feel less overwhelming, Miesse
recommends “concentrating on
one room at a time.” Miszti says
"regularly tidying" up rooms
and doing light vacuuming
daily (especially in the kitchen/
dining room and especially if
you have kids or pets), having
designated places for belongings,
and thoroughly vacuuming and
mopping floors weekly can all be
helpful to lessen the load when it
comes to doing a bigger clean.
The products you’re using
and the materials you’re using
them on are also incredibly
important. “Research the
materials used in your home and
clean appropriately. Unsealed
stone, concrete, stainless
steel, and porcelain all have
different care requirements,”
Rathe shares. “Liquid bleach or
bleach-based products such as
Tilex have the potential to spill
or overspray, causing bleached
spots on carpet/rugs; an ecofriendly
option is using a steam
cleaner. Also, baking soda, white
vinegar and dish soap can be
used if you prefer,” Miesse says.
Other sustainable options?
“Using washable cleaning cloths
(dusters, mop heads, rags) and
all-purpose cleaner concentrate
with degreasing properties,”
Rathe says.
any of these new medications are right for you.
What’s all the chatter about?
They’re in the news, mentioned at the Academy Awards, by
talk show hosts, articles in The Washington Post, New York
Times, and Wall Street Journal. Perhaps this will be the year
that more people recognize that obesity is a disease and that it
can and IS being treated successfully.
Semaglutide, the medication marketed as Wegovy for obesity
and Ozempic and Rybelsus marketed for diabetes, and the
newest, tirzepatide marketed as Mounjaro are proving to be
a game changer for the treatment of obesity. Word has been
spreading like wildfire and they are flying off the shelves! It’s
no wonder when people are achieving 15-20% of total body
weight loss with continued use.
We are very excited to offer these medications at Hendricks for
combined with our proprietary Hendricks Method program.
thrive outside!
camping 101
by RYAN MARTINEZ
For many, our first real experience with the outdoors begins with a simple family
camping trip. As adults, we continue to pass on the joys of camping to newer
generations, knowing the benefits it brings mentally, physically, and emotionally.
For me, a simple two-day fishing trip fueled a lifetime of adventure-seeking and mountain
climbing. Connecting to the primordial and instinctive nature of humankind is as simple
as starting a fire, cooking on an open flame, or even staring into the vast expanse of an
open night sky. These things remind us of our evolution in technology, survival, and even
consciousness. If it fails at any of that, well…it’s just a plain old good time.
The benefits are innumerable: a quiet respite from the stresses of daily life, connecting
with the family in a wholesome way free from gadgets,
reconnecting with nature, and even resetting your
natural sleep cycles are just a few gifts camping has
to offer.
Yet getting outside doesn’t always mean getting
outside your comfort zone. With advances
in technology, boutique lodging, and the
explosion of the van life innovations, your
next trip out can be just as comfy as a movie
night on the sofa.
Luckily, we did the legwork for you and
searched for the best local glamping spots,
tracked down some tips and tricks for
the RV-curious, and ideas to make your
next adventure out worthy of a (hopefully
frequent) repeat.
American River Resort
For those who want to camp with a
taste of luxury, our beautiful backyard
is home to many spots that offer
cabins, camping, and glamping so you
can set up a comfy home base and
AMERICAN RIVER
RESORT
The American River Resort is just
one example of a great escape
destination. Located just minutes
from where gold was first discovered,
the resort is quietly settled along
the banks of the South Fork of the
American River Resort
American River, setting the stage for
both epic adventures and a serene
escape.
Their traditional tent camping spots
include private fire pits and picnic
tables with two settings to choose from:
mountain view—situated within the oak
forest near the RV hookup area (perfect
if you’re with a group that has both
tent campers and RVers) and featuring
views of Mt. Murphy and the resort’s
scenic pond—and riverside, which, you
guessed it, are right on the shores of
the American River (some overlook
the South Fork’s most notorious rapid:
“The Troublemaker”). Enjoy watching
as people tackle the most exciting part
of the river during the day and soothe
yourself to sleep at night with the sound
of running water. And if swimming in
rivers isn’t your thing, the in-ground pool
just a short walk away will surely suffice.
For those who want to avoid the troubles
of packing up all their cumbersome
camping gear, glamping will be your new
favorite word, and the American River
Resort might be your new favorite spot.
Unlike many common RV sites, those at
the American River Resort are quietly
nestled into the oak meadows—away
from other sites—offering a serene
landscape to soak in the wonders of the
outdoors with ample room to roam. For
RVers, the resort has full hookups to
power, water, and sewer.
CAMP NAUVOO
If you’re seeking something a little more
private, cozy, and fitted with fun games,
then Camp Nauvoo checks all the boxes.
Located on the outskirts of Placerville,
the camp was originally founded in the
1960s as a girls’ camp, later to become
a Boy Scout camp, until finally being
transformed into the family-friendly
camp destination it is today.
The off-the-beaten path getaway
boasts over 86 acres of tranquil
scenery, with traditional tent camping
and a choice of beautiful safari tents,
mini glamping tents, or a teepee
glamping experience.
The secluded nature of Camp Nauvoo
makes it an excellent kid-friendly
choice, with tons of activities like ping
pong, pickleball, corn hole, basketball,
and volleyball. The fun doesn’t stop
there though. The camp also has swing
sets, seesaws, and tractor
play. With large group sites
on the premises, you can
even plan a getaway with
several families for some
added fun.
The glamping safari
tents themselves are
definitely “Instagram
worthy” and bring cozy
getaway vibes, while the
teepees are a seriously
fun option for kiddos.
The camp also offers
multiple sites to pitch
a tent and unwind, too,
and feature propane
fire pits and picnic tables.
Take note that open fires
are not allowed, and the
camp offers propane
barbecues for cooking.
Regardless of how you
choose to stay, you
still have access to the
on-site amenities like
covered dining, bathrooms
with flushing toilets, hot
showers, electricity for
charging your (hopefully unused)
gadgets, and even a compressor to
blow up those comfy air mattresses.
They also have a small selection of
rental gear and a store to pick up
forgotten amenities.
Being close to home yet far from
city life, you can easily access many
fun outdoor activities, including
rafting, horseback riding, hiking,
swimming, and all the other outdoor
escapes our backyard is known for.
multiple offerings, so check to see
which cabin is right for you.
The leveled tent and RV sites have a
private fire pit (open fires allowed),
riverfront sites or off-river ones.
There are also clean bathrooms with
running water and hot showers.
Morning river walks call for coffee—
and for the best cup in town
(alongside a menu full of fresh,
healthy food made using locally
weekends, you can listen to live
music, too, while enjoying gelato,
sandwiches, and a pint on their
picturesque patio.
INN TOWN CAMPGROUND
If you want to get to the north side of the
Tahoe National Forest, Inn Town Campground
is a wonderful option. Founded in 2016, the
15-acre property is just minutes from Nevada
City and boasts fun activities like open-air
movies, holiday events, a swimming pool,
Wi-Fi, and a fully stocked camp store for your
convenience.
Built from a passion for the outdoors and a love
of our community, owners Dan and Erin Thiem
have created a fun, family-friendly spot amid
the lofty pines. Their love of the outdoors can
be felt in the details, like the open-air showers
and indoor and outdoor spaces for families and
friends (both new and old!) to gather.
Options to camp include 20 charming
glamping tents with electricity, heated
mattress pads, and private balconies or
porches that bring the best of glamping to
Nevada City. Each one has a slightly different
aesthetic but the same cozy mountain vibe.
The campground also has 30 tent sites with
propane-only fire pits (due to the high fire
danger in the area), so be aware that woodburning
fires aren’t allowed.
If you’re seeking a place to snooze that’s
a step up from glamping with a hip,
outdoorsy vibe, then check out Basecamp
Hotel (basecamphotels.com). The boutique
property (locations in South Lake Tahoe and
Tahoe City) is perfect for adventure-seekers who
crave creature comforts (Wi-Fi, a walk-in shower,
luxurious bedding). Guests are encouraged to come
together in cozy communal areas to share stories
and exchange tips before heading out for some
fresh air fun. The “Great Indoors” room—which
comes inclusive of a faux log fire, picnic table,
indoor tent, camping chairs, and more—is especially
enticing for families who want the camping
experience without the bugs, shared bathrooms,
and uncomfortable elements that often come with
it. Rates are reasonable and include some appealing
amenities, too, like fire pits, s’mores, and craft beer.
v revolution
Dreaming of RV life? We reached out
to local expert and RV consultant
Jim Pelley about what you need to
consider before getting your first RV.
The main consideration is how you will
use it. You need to work backwards
and consider whether you’ll be living
full-time in it or going the weekend
warrior route. This will help narrow
down the options. As Pelley says, the
wrong decision can cost a fortune to
remediate.
You have two essential options:
motorhome or trailer. A motorhome is
comfortable and can tow a car but is
hard to drive in certain areas; a trailer
allows you to unhook and have your
truck ready to explore.
Here are some more quick tips for RV
newbies:
• How long will you be staying
inside? Remember, you’ll have at
least one trip where you don’t go
outside the RV.
• Is it insulated? Many first-time
buyers don’t consider this and think
their two-season RV is ready for a
winter in Tahoe…not the case, and this
is often not advertised.
• Floor plan. Is the bed big enough?
Is the shower tall enough? Is there
enough counter space?
• Holding tanks. Will your RV hold
enough water? Will the “black water”
or sewage tanks last long enough?
This will largely depend if you plan
on hooking up at campsites or going
off grid.
• Electricity. Do you need to buy a
generator to power your electronics
or is there an on-board generator?
You don’t want to park the RV only to
realize you can’t use your electronics
because the dealer forgot to
mention the outlets don’t work
without a generator!
• Cargo carrying capacity. How much
weight do you plan on bringing?
Consider the amount of people, your
equipment, tools, toys, dishes, etc.
You may find you need a heftier RV.
• Know your gear. Most RVs don’t
have a pressure regulator. You may
need to add an extra in-line filter if
you plan on hooking up at campsites.
Electric? Wi-Fi? Storage?
• All about the extras. Do you need to
budget for a generator? How about a
floor mat, awning, chairs, etc.?
• Where are you going? There are two
types of campgrounds: Full hookups
(water, sewer, electricity) and no
hookups. Where you plan on going
will dictate the rig you need.
• “Play house.” Pelley recommends
spending an hour at the dealership
“playing house” to really imagine
living in the RV. Someone he met
once bought a trailer and didn’t
realize you couldn’t use the toilet
and shut the door at the same
time…oops! According to Pelley, “It’s
amazing how many people will spend
hundreds of thousands of dollars
and not even try the bed!”
AIRSTREAM
An American icon since hitting the
highways in the ’30s, Airstream
(airstream.com) is undoubtably one
of the most recognized, respected
names in the RV world and in a
league of its own. Easy on the
eyes and always “in style,” thanks
to sturdy, modern, aerodynamic
aluminum exteriors and
interiors brimming with comfort,
convenience, and attention to
detail, an Airstream investment will
stand the test of time and bring a
lifetime of memories.
The Bambi (pictured above),
Airstream's smallest single-axle,
lightweight travel trailer, comes
inclusive of a dedicated sleeping
space, convertible dinette space,
a kitchen, and on-board restroom.
#
vanlife
I
Photos courtesy of Emily and Kevin Fannon.
f you haven’t heard of
#vanlife, well…that’s a little
strange. The Instagram craze
has become symbol of the
dream life, a luxurious overland
experience bridging the gap
between epic adventures and
the comforts of home. While the
lifestyle has been idealized by
digital nomads and influencer
travel couples across the globe,
the comforts of van life can
now be experienced, thanks to
Scenic Vanlife (scenicvans.com)
in Rocklin.
The couple behind the company—
Emily and Kevin Fannan—has a
selection of camper vans available
to rent that will take you on your
next adventure—whether it’s
a weekend, week, month, or
longer—in style and comfort.
Forget the headache of packing
the tent, setting up camp,
finding bathrooms and showers,
worrying about electricity;
each van comes fully equipped
to bring life in the home to the
great outdoors. The best part?
They offer free trip planning and don’t charge for mileage, so
customers are always encouraged to take the scenic route.
Campervans, like the ones you can rent from Scenic
Vanlife, are a cross between a utility van and an RV, with
an easy-to-drive home fully furnished with a bed, kitchen,
and even a bathroom—so you can go off the grid with a
portable home. Sleeping between two to five people, the
vans are fully equipped with propane stoves for cooking,
dining areas that convert to either a queen bed or two
twins, hot showers, sinks, and RV toilets. These adventure
mobiles could be your transporation (and accommodation)
for your family’s next trip to one of our great national
parks or even just a trip to the woods or along the coast.
I personally have dreamed of the #vanlife. The freedom to
roam without the sacrifice of comfort is just so appealing.
And not having to learn how to drive a massive RV that
can only be parked in certain places is a huge plus—simply
start the car and move camp; it’s that simple. Your house
on wheels moving from one beautiful spot to another…what
more could you ask for?
When it comes to my camping gear
essentials list, it wouldn’t be complete
without the AeroPress Go—a simple
coffee maker optimized for the
outdoors because everything packs
up into the included mug for easy
carrying. Essentially a hybrid
between espresso and a French
press, the result is a delicious cup
of coffee that you may want
to enjoy even when you’re not
camping (believe me, I’ve done it
at home).
Here’s how to make a
delicious morning cup o’ joe.
• Put included filter into
bottom of the AeroPress Go.
• Add about two tablespoons
of your favorite roast (a good
local blend is Chocolate Fish
Coffee Roasters’ Finca San Luis with
cherry sweetness, dark berry acidity,
and a milk chocolate finish).
• Place over your coffee mug. I like the insulated ones
from Yeti, but anything will work.
• Pour hot (not boiling) water over the coffee.
• Stir grounds until fully submerged and air is removed.
• Let steep for about one minute.
• Use included plunger to press the coffee out of the
thank us later.
AeroPress Go.
• Add optional cream and sugar—or Irish cream liqueur.
with kids
Planning on getting out with the kiddos?
Here are some helpful hacks to make
some (good) lifetime memories.
Looking for a fun meal to make? Why
not try campfire nachos! This is a fun
way to share a meal while you sip your
favorite beverage (maybe a SR16
Double IPA from Crooked Lane?).
• Plan ahead. Reserve your spot,
plan your meals, and create your
gear checklist before you head out.
When traveling, especially camping,
with young ones, it’s best to avoid
unwanted surprises so everything
runs smoothly.
• Know how to use your gear.
Whether setting up a tent or
converting your van’s dining room
table into a bed, it’s best to know
how to set up beforehand. Do a test
run the weekend before to make
sure you know how to set up—and
to ensure you have everything you
need.
• Pack for all weather. Make sure
you have layers and a windbreaker/
rain jacket. I always have my puffy
packed in there for when night falls.
• Stick to your normal schedule.
Young kids appreciate a schedule,
so try to follow your normal routine
as much as possible. Wake-up
rituals, breakfast, naps, before bed
activities (yes, bring their go-to
bedtime books!)…all the things you
normally do.
Here’s how to cook some epic nachos
in the outdoors. While we recommend
a Dutch oven, you can also use a cast
iron skillet with a lid. Don’t have a lid
for your skillet? No problem! Cover
the top using a piece of aluminum foil.
CAMPFIRE
NACHOS
• Spray a
fine layer of oil
into the pan. We
love avocado
oil because it
withstands higher
temps, but anything will do. Tip:
Use a piece of parchment paper
on the bottom instead of oil for
easier cleanup.
Camping With Kids photos by Megan Wiskus. Campfire Cooking illustration © sabelskaya-stock.adobe.com.
• Arrive with plenty of light. You’ll
want to set up before dark, so you
aren’t scrambling in obscurity. Bring
a headlamp anyway.
• Pack the right gear. Make sure
you have your tent, stove, propane,
sleeping bags/sleeping pads,
pillows, headlamp, first aid kit
(plus any medicine that might be
needed), and everything else you
need to bring to make it a great
(and comfortable) trip for the kids.
• Break the norm. OK—we know we
just told you to follow all the rituals
(and you should), but this is a time
to do something new and fun. Make
it an adventure! Go rafting, hiking,
horseback riding, play hide and
seek…be a kid with your kids.
• Add a layer of tortilla chips.
• Sprinkle your favorite blend of
cheeses.
• Add a layer of black beans.
• Add an optional layer of cooked
ground beef, chicken, or choice of
meat.
• Cube an avocado and add about a
handful evenly over the nachos.
• Add a bit of salsa or roasted green
chilies (Hatch is always the best).
• Top with finely chopped green
onions and cilantro.
• Repeat for layers two and three.
• Cover and cook for about 10
minutes until cheese is melted.
• Serve with a wedge of lime.
Personally, no spirit
screams the outdoors as
much as a good bourbon.
If that’s your thing too,
an Old Fashioned will fit
the mood perfectly. Here’s
what you need.
Old Fashioned
• Aromatic bitters, like
Angostura.
• Simple syrup. Buy one in
a squeeze bottle or buy a
separate squeeze bottle for
ease-of-use outdoors.
• Cherries. We love the ones
made by Woodford Reserve
or Fabbri Amarena.
• Your favorite bourbon:
Woodford Reserve,
Bulleit, Maker’s Mark, Basil
Hayden…choose a good one.
• Oranges.
• Ice.
If you can’t be bothered
playing bartender while
camping, then check out the
canned vino offerings
from Wise Villa Winery
or the Bulleit Old Fashioned
Cocktail that comes premade
and can be served
up or over ice. Easy
peasy!
To prepare:
• Add a couple dashes of bitters to
your cup of choice.
• Add 1-1.5 tablespoons simple syrup
(more if you like ‘em sweet), plus an
optional teaspoon of cherry juice
(it’s delicious, trust me).
• Add two shots of bourbon.
• Stir with ice until chilled. Strain over
fresh ice, if possible.
• Cut orange peel and spritz the oils
over the top of the drink. Add to
drink.
• Pop in a cherry garnish.
• Enjoy peacefully!
3 FAMILY-FRIENDLY
SEASIDE ESCAPES
by MEGAN WISKUS
Traveling with kids is an adventure in and of itself.
From the journey of getting to your destination, to
the sleep (or lack thereof), and logistics of planning
a kid-friendly but adult-approved itinerary, it can
certainly be stressful. But the memories made are
worth every meltdown. Here, we share three of
our favorite family-friendly escapes, with what to
do and where to stay. No kids? No problem. All the
suggestions are equally fun for big kids, too!
Half Moon Bay
When it comes to small-town charm, Half Moon Bay
tops the charts. Quiet country roads, some of our
state’s most stunning scenery, and a bustling Main
Street brimming with mom-and-pop businesses
make the quaint seaside city a much-loved locale.
Just over two hours from Sacramento, it’s the
perfect getaway if you’re craving cool ocean air and
seriously fresh seafood with a side of solitude.
Craving the flavors of Italy in an
ambiance that’s as authentic as the
food? Book a table at It’s Italia—a Half
Moon Bay institution since opening
in the mid-’90s. Serving a full range
of California-Italian cuisine using the
bounty of local farms, wineries, and
fisheries, a meal here is a must. The
attentive service, old-world environs,
and unforgettable fare (slow-roasted
and wood-fired pizzas) make it a
restaurant that’s ideal for all occasions.
5. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
A visit to Half Moon Bay wouldn’t be
complete without a beach day. And while
we highly recommend packing a picnic
and flying a kite at Poplar Beach (which
is “popular” for good reason…and pupfriendly!),
Fitzgerald Marine Reserve—a
rocky seashore sanctuary that’s home to
a living community of protected marine
life—is an experience the whole family
will treasure. Arrive around low tide to
“sea” a variety of algae, crabs, sponges,
seals, sea stars, mollusks, and more. Please
note: Fitzgerald is a place of research,
education, and observation of wild
animals in their natural habitat; collecting
and touching creatures is prohibited.
Maneki
Sushi
by RYAN MARTINEZ | photos by TAYLOR GILLESPIE
Takoyaki
My new go-to sushi spot has emerged.
Sprouting from the Bay Area’s eventinspired
Bay Boys Brewing, Maneki has
taken the tradition of live music, good beer,
and fun environs and injected some of the
freshest sushi to hit Roseville.
Delivering unforgettable flavors since opening in
December 2022, Head Chef Will Hunt brings over 15 years
of experience in the sushi industry, and his expertise
is clear from first sight. Having worked in many of
the biggest sushi restaurants in the area, he brings an
inspired level of craftsmanship to every plate.
It's evident from their Instagram that Maneki focuses
on fresh flavors and high-quality ingredients, elaborating
on sashimi and nigiri with welcome touches, like a brush
of aged soy sauce and unique textural elements. You’ll also
Fog City Roll
SF Zoo Roll
see very little fried sushi, which
sets Maneki apart from most of
the region’s other sushi spots.
Born from a brewery and
inspired by the Bay Area, you can
expect some good brews, too. We
opted for the Bay Boys classic: a
West Coast IPA. You should know,
however, that they also brew an
exclusive Japanese lager that pairs
perfectly with sushi.
We were seated by our friendly
waitress who showed us around the
menu and made some (amazing)
suggestions. We started with
takoyaki, a classic round-shaped
Japanese snack made from a slightly
sweet batter filled with octopus and
served with a drizzle of unagi sauce
and Japanese mayo (kewpie). These
were, by far, the best takoyaki I’ve had
in the area—hands down.
We shared a second starter of
seared Hokkaido scallops (found
on the “Special Plates from Sushi
Bar” portion of the menu) that
were served over a small dollop of
crab mix with garlic, cucumber,
and a bit of lemon. The touch of
lemon was exactly the ingredient
needed to balance the dish, and
with a slight hint of garlic, it
immediately became one of my
favorite appetizers.
Next, we ordered three rolls:
49er, SF Zoo, and Fog City.
Our server brought us some
“real” wasabi (not the typical
horseradish wasabi), which was
an unexpected (and pleasant!)
surprise and worth remembering
to ask for. All the rolls were
fantastic; the fish was fresh, the
flavors were incredible, and the
textures were layered, making
each bite a moment to stop, close
your eyes, and savor.
Maneki also hosts around two
monthly events with music by
award-winning, well-known DJs.
Rumor has it they’re popular, so
reservations are recommended.
If you’re hungry for superior
sushi in a nice setting with topnotch
service and a good beer
to accompany, keep Maneki top
of mind.
In the mood for some super Mediterranean food? You’re in luck!
There’s a place in Folsom serving up memorable meals made using
wholesome ingredients without any added colors, additives, or
anything else that shouldn’t be in your food. Falafel Corner has
a menu full of their namesake falafels (of course!), plus gyros, wraps,
and more. I went with the Chicken Wrap: grilled marinated chicken in
a secret combo of spices, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki all
snuggled inside a warm pita. I love the texture of a warm pita filled with
anything. It also came with a side of fries, which always makes me happy.
My husband had the Philly Wrap: gyro (lamb) with onions, mushrooms,
bell peppers, and a side of crinkle-cut fries. They also serve burgers,
bowls, sandwiches, salads, and pizza. Feel like getting fancy with
your fries? Try the shawarma or Greek fries! Whatever you order, do
yourself a favor and grab a side of hummus, pita (you can never have
too much pita), and handmade Falafel. Dine in, grab it to go, or have
them cater your next event. Just don’t forget the baklava for dessert!
Salmon Avocado Burger.
Picture a mouthwatering,
the trimmings. So, what’s
the secret ingredient that
takes this burger to the
next level? A generous
drizzle of citrus honey dill
aioli. It brings the delicate,
fatty flavors of the salmon
HONEYCOMB
ON OVER
Honey is perfect for
offsetting strong, savory
flavors or citrusy notes,
but sometimes you
want honey for what it
does best: be sweet. If
you always have room
for dessert, prepare to
add the Honeycomb
We’re Donating $10,000
to Local Charities
And Need Your Help!
In honor of our 20th year in business, we're
donating $1,000 each month—from April
2023 to January 2024—to local charitable
organizations and need YOU, our readers,
to help us designate the recipients.
“Giving back has been part of our business model
since we started the company in 2003,” says
STYLE Publisher Wendy Sipple. “STYLE has given
cash, scholarships, and pages in its publications
and websites to more than 1,700 businesses,
artists, and charities over the past 20 years,
totaling more than $1.4 million in value.”
Nominate the charity of your choice by
visiting stylemg.com/20years. We
will keep a tally of all the nominations
and announce the recipients in each
issue of STYLE—along with a photo of us
presenting a check to the previous month's
chosen charity.
