INTRODUCTION .
I have written the following pages because I felt the
need of such a book of reference for my own pupils , but it
is not intended to take the place of a grammar , although it
may do so with the natural methods of teaching.

4 INTRODUCTION .
REMARKS ON THE GENDER OF NOUNS.
1. There is no neuter gender in French , and consequently
the names of inanimate objects are either masculine or
feminine. It may be observed here that practice and dic
tionaries are the best means to master the gender of nouns
of inanimate objects ; however , a few general observations
are here given , which will be found of great assistance to
the student .
2. Masculine : 1st . Names of towns, as Paris (except
those ending in e or es , as Rome ) . 2d . Names of metals,
minerals, and colours, as or, fer, &c . 3d . Names of days,
months, and seasons ; as lundi, avril, hiver , &c. 4th .
Names of trees and shrubs ; as chène , rosier, &c . ( except :
ébène, épine, aubépine, ronce, vigne): 5th . Adjectives, verbs,
and prepositions used substantively ; as l'utile, le boire, le
contre, & c. 6th . All names designating a man ; as père,
roi, &c. 7th . All names designating the male of an animal ,
as le cheval, chat, lion , &c . 8th . All names ending in one
of the eleven letters b , c , d , g, h , k , l , p , q , y , z ; as le
plomb, le banc, le bord, le rang , l'almanach, le carrick , le
bal, le camp , le coq, le jury, le nez , & c .
2. Feminine : 1st . All names designating a woman ; as
la mère, reine, & c . 2d . All names designating a female of
an animal ; as jument, chatte, lionne , &c.
4. Sometimes the same word is used for male or female
of an animal , in which case the word is either masculine or
feminine, according to its termination ; as buffle, castor,
chameau , &c . , always masculine ; girafe , souris, tortue, &c. ,
always feminine.
N. B.—When , in speaking of these animals, we wish to
distinguish their sex , we are obliged to designate it by

adding the word måle or femelle ; as le mâle de la girafe ,
la femelle du chameau ; or la girafe mâle , le chameau
femelle .
5. Nouns having the following terminations are feminine :
ace : •la glace, &c.
ade : ambasade, &c .
ance, ence : constance , &c . (except silence) .
ande. ende : demande , & c .
esse : adresse, caresse, &c .
eur : chaleur, &c. ( except bonneur, honneur, malheur,
labeur.
ise : bêtise , franchise , &c.
rie : barbarie, furie , &c .
sion : pension , &c .
té : bonté , &c . (except cóté , páté, comité, traité, été) .
tion : portion, &c .
ude : étude, solitude, &c.
une : lune , fortune, &c .
ure : brûlure , culture , &c .
wion : réflexion, &c.
CAPITAL LETTERS .
Capital letters (les majuscule) are used at the beginning
of every sentence in prose ; of
every verse in
poetry ;
of
all Christian and proper names of persons , as Napoléon ,
Pierre Corneille ; of places , as l'Amérique, la France, Paris ,
le Louvre ; of people , as les Anglais, les Parisiens ; of
seas, rivers , mountains , &c. , as la Mediterranée, le beau
Rhin , les Alpes.

6 THE SUBJECT .
RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION .
I. THE SUBJECT .
1. The subject of a verb is generally a noun : Dieu
récompense la vertu , l'oiseau vole ; or a pronoen : je tra
vaille , tu lis .
2. We find the subject by means of the question qui est-ce
qui ? for persons , and qu'est-ce qui ? for things . Une mère
aime son enfant. Qui est -ce qui aime ? Une mère ; mère
is the subject of aime. La charité honore l'homme . Qu'
est-ce qui honore ? La charité ; charité is the subject of
honore.
3. As a general rule , the subject is placed at the begin
ning of the phrase , except in the interrogative form .
4. In the interrogative forms the subject is placed at the
beginning of a phrase if it is a noun , and the pronoun is
repeated after the verb : Le père a-t -il le livre ?
5. If the subject is a pronoun , in the interrogative form ,
it is usually placed after the verb . But in interrogative
sentences beginning with the form est-ce-que, the subject
precedes the verb : Est-ce qu'il parlera ?
II . THE COMPLEMENTS OR OBJECTS .
1. If they are nouns, they stand after the verb to which
they belong. If they are pronouns, they are placed before
the verb , except in the imperative affirmative .
2. There is a direct and an indirect object .
3. The direct completes the signification of the verb ,
without the aid of any other word ; it answers to the ques
THE OBJECTS . 7
tion qui ? for persons, and quoi ? for things : J'instruis
mes élèves. Je chéris l'étude. J'instruis qui ? Mes élèves.
Je chéris quoi ? L'étude. Mes élèves, l'étude , are the direct
objects of j ' instruis and je chéris.
4. The indirect object is that which completes the mean
ing of the verb with the aid of a preposition ; it answers
to the questions d qui ! de qui ? pour qui ? avec qui ? etc. ,
for persons, and to the questions à quoi ? de quoi ? etc. , for
things : J'obéis à mon maître. Je m'occupe d'histoire.
J'obéis à qui ? A mon maître . Je m'occupe de quoi ?
d
D'histoire. À mon maître, d'histoire, are of course the
indirect objects of jobeis and je m'occupe.
5. If nouns , the direct object generally precedes the in
direct : J'envoie les livres à votre frère .
6. When both pronouns are of the same person , the direct
object precedes the indirect : Je le lui prêterai .
7. When both pronouns are of different persons , the
indirect precedes the direct : Je vous le promets.
8. In the imperative used affirmatively the direct inva
riably precedes the indirect object, and both follow the
verb ; and then the pronouns moi and toi , are used instead
of me and te : Donnez-le-moi. Donnez -moi du vin .
9. But when the imperative is negative , the pronoun ob
ject precedes the verb , and follows rules 6 and 7. Ex.: Ne
la remerciez
pas .
10. SIGNIFICATION OF THE PRONOUN OBJECTS BEFORE THE

8 THE NEGATION.

of them, by them, by it , from them , from there , about it .
Y= to , to it , to them , by it , by them , in it , in them ,
for it, for them , at it, at them , with it, with them , there.
11. The pronoun objects which precede the verbs are
used with the same signification after the verbs ; except
me and te, which are substituted by moi and toi.
We have, however, the form m'en .
III .
THE NEGATION.
1. The negation is composed of two parts , ne and pas.
2. The first is placed immediately after the subject , if
the phrase is not interrogative : Il ne viendra pas .
3. If the phrase is interrogative and the subject a pro
noun , the negation naturally takes its place at the beginning
of the phrase : Ne viendra - t - il pas ?
4. The second part of the negation is placed immediately
after the verb in a simple tense : Il ne viendra pas.
5. In a compound tense it is placed between the auxiliary
and the past qarticiple.
N. B.-The second part , pas, is omited when any one of
the following words is used : point, plus, jamais, rien ,
guère, ni, nullement, ancunement, * personne, *nul, * ancun,
* nulle part, *que and other negative expressions. Also in
the negative conjugation of the verbs cesser , oser , pouvoir,
and savoir , when used in the sense of pouvoir : Je ne sau
rais vous le dire . I cannot tell you .
* When the tense is compound , these words are placed after the
participle.
RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION . 9
IV . POSITION OF THE ADVERB .
1. In the simple tenses, after the verb .
2. In compound tenses, between the auxiliary and the
past participle . Ex.: Il n'est pas encore venu .
N. B. - Adverbs of time are generally placed after the
past participle.
V. REMARKS ON NOUNS .
(a) Between two nouns the preposition de expresses ma
terial . Ex.: Un fusil de fer.
(b) . The preposition à expresses use or condition . Ex.:
1 ° La salle à manger . 2 ° Des armes à feu . 3 ° Une maison
à trois étages.
2. DIMENSION .
Is expressed with a noun or an adjective preceded or fol
lowed by the preposition de. Ex .:
1 ° Combien cette tour a -t-elle de hauteur ?
2 ° Elle est haute de cinquante pieds .
3 ° Vous êtes plus grand que lui de deux pieds.
ON ADJECTIVES .
1. The place of the adjectives is after the noun . Except :
beau , jeune, grand , mauvais, joli, gros, meilleur, nouveau,
petit, vilain .
And others , when harmony requires it , or when they have
a different meaning according to their position . Ex .: Je
vois un affreux spectacle . C'est un brave homme (good
man ). C'est un homme brave (brave man ).
2. The following are always placed after the noun :
10 THE USE OF VERBS .
(a) Adjectives of forms or color. Ex.: 1 ° Un chapeau
rond. 2 ° Un habit noir .
(b) Adjectives which express physical or mental quali
ties . Ex . : 1 ° Des amandes douces. 2 ° Un homme sage.
( 3 ) Adjectives derived from proper nouns. Ex.: 1 ° Un
exprit napoléonien . 2° Un brick français.
(d ) Past participles used as adjectives . Ex.: 1 ° Un
homme instruit . 2 ° Une action défendue.
VI . USE OF THE VERBS .
manner .
1. Indicative Mood :
This mood expresses action in a positive and absolute
J'aime mes parents . It has eight tenses : 1 ° the
present ; 2 ° the imperfect ; 3º the past definite ; 4º the past
indefinite ; 5 ° the pluperfect ; 6º the past anterior ; 7 ° the
future ; gº the future anterior .
2. The present indicates that the action takes place while
speaking. Ex . : J'écris.
3. The imperfect presents the event as taking place in a
past period, but as prolonged. Ex . : Pendant que Télé
maque parlait, Calypso regardait Mentor.
N. B.—The imperfect is frequently used to indicate, in a
past time , a custom , or an action as repeated . Ex. : 1 ° Les
Druides immolaient des victimes humaines. 2 ° Il marchait
le matin autour de son château ,
4. The past definite expresses the action as having taken
place in a time completely past away , and with an idea of
rapidity . Ex . : Il
у
alla. Louis XIV mourut en 1715 ,
5. The indefinite presents an action as not long past nor
rapid. Ex . : J'ai écrit hier à mon père.
6. The pluperfect presents an action as being past before
1
THE USE OF VERBS . 11
some other action equally past. Ex . : Quand le messager
arriva, j'avais écrit la lettre .
7. The past anterior presents the action as past and rapid
but anterior to some other action equally past . Ex . : Lors
que César eut conquis la Gaule , la guerre civile éclata en
Italie .
8. The future indicates that the action will take place
after the time in which we speak . : Je remplirai mes de
voirs .
9. The future anterior presents, in a future time, the
action as already accomplished . Ex.: J'aurai terminé
demain .
10. THE CONDITIONAL .
This mood represents the action or affirmation under the
idea of a condition , and corresponds to the English , could ,
should or would .
N. B.-With si (if) , the imperfect and not the conditional
as in English , must be used . Ex . : Si je pouvais , j'irais.
11. THE IMPERATIVE .
This mood expresses the action under the form of a com
mand , wish or exhortation . Ex .: 1 ° Remplis tes devoirs .
2° Un malheureux m'a dit : Ayez pitié de moi .
12 . THE SUBJUNCTIVE .
This mood expresses the action or affirmation in a doubt
ful , subordinate or dependent manner, and answers to the
English may or might, may have or might have.
13. It is used when the phrase is negative, after que.
Ex . : Je ne crois pas qu'il vienne .
14. It is used in the secondary phrases , when the action
expressed by the second verb may be uncertain . Ex . : Je
vondrais qu'il fit cela.
12 THE USE OF VERBS .
15. It is also used in the following instances :
(a) After que in a dependent phrase when the action
may
,
quence . Ex .: Je doute , je suppose,
suis d'avis, j'entends, je prétends,
je permets, je clésire , je
j'attends qu'il vienne.
J'ai peur qu'il ne vienne.
(b ) After the pronouns que or qui in relative phrases,
when the action is not completely positive . Ex . : Je cherche
quelqu'un qui veuille m'accompagner.
be doubtful or when it indicates fear , supposition, per
mission , will , or wish , demand or command , aim or conse
(c) Always after the indefinite expressions quel... que,
quelque ... que , qui , que , quoi , que, où que , si... que.
Ex . : Quelque peu riche que vous soyez , vous pouvez secou
rir les indigents.
16. USE OF TENSES OF THE SUBJUNCTIVE .
When the first verb is in the present indicative or future,
the Second verb is made present subjunctive in order to ex
press a present action , and in the perfect subjunctive in
order to express a past action . Ex . : 1 ° Mon père veut que
je sois attentif. 2 ° Je doute que vous ayez etudié .
17. When the first verb is in one of the tenses of the past
indicative or in the conditional the second verb is made
imperfect subjunctive, for a present action and pluperfect
subjunctive for a past action . Ex.: 1 ° Mon père voulait que
je fusse attentif. 2 ° Je doutais que vous eussiez etudié la
semaine passée.
18. INFINITIVE MOOD .
The present infinitive with the preposition d and de : 1 ° Is
used with à when the signification is fuvorable. Ex .:
J'aime à voyager . 2 ° Is used with de when the signification
is contrary . Ex .: Je hais de partir.
THE USE OF VERBS . 13
19. This mood represents an action in a vague manner
without designating number or person . Ex .: Il est doux
de remplir ses devoirs.
20. PARTICIPLES .
The participle presents the verb in the form of an adjec
tive . Ex , : 1 ° Un prince aimant la guerre . 2° Un profes
seur aimé de ses élèves .
21. The present participle is always invariable. It must
not be confounded with the verbal adjective, which like it,
ends in ant, and is variable , following the rule of other
adjectives .
22. The present participle adds to words which it quali
fies the idea of an action done by that word . Ex. : Des
éclairs sillonnant la nue .
23. The present participle is not used as in English for
subject . We say : Manger trop est funeste, and not : Eat
ing too much ....
24. It is only used with one preposition - en — which sig
nifies by , when , while, on , after, as.
25. The past participle, used without auxiliary, agrees in
gender and number with the noun or pronoun to which it
relates. Ex . : Les inimitiés sourdes et cachées sont plus à
craindre que les haines ouvertes et déclarées.
26. The past participle, used with the auxiliary être ,
agrees in gender and number with the noun or pronoun to
which it relates . Ex . : Les âmes nobles sont tonjours con
NUES .
N. B .-- The reflective verbs , although accompanied by the
auxiliary étre, follows the rule of the participles used with
avoir.
27. The past participle accompanied by avoir agrees
with the direct object when preceded by that object , and
14 THE CONJUGATION OF VERBS .
remains invariable when followed by the object, or when
there is no direct object. Ex.: 1 ° Voici la lettre que j'ai
reçue ; quelle peine j'ai éprouvée ! Variable because reçue
and éprouvée are preceded by their direct objects que, quelle
peine. Ex.: 2 ° Nons avons reçu votre lettre. Here the
participle reçu is invariable because it is followed by the
direct object votre lettre .
VII .
CONJUGATION OF VERBS.
1. To conjugate a verb , is to write or repeat it with all
its changes of moods, tenses , numbers, and persons.
2. We have in French four conjugations , which are dis
tinguished by the termination of the present of the Indica
tive :
The 1st ends in ER , as plant -ER.
66 fin -IR .
2d IR ,
3d
66 66
66
4th "( 6
“ oir , " dev -oir.
re, rend - re.
3. French verbs are formed of two distinct parts : the
root, which is unchangeable, and the termination , which is
changeable ; as , plant - er, je plant -e, plant -ons, plant - ez.
4. Verbs are either regular, irregular or defective.
5. A verb is regular when it is conjugated in all its tenses
and persons like one of the four conjugations .
6. It is irregular when it deviates from the rules by
which regular verbs are conjugated.
7. It is defective when it wants some mood , tense , or per
son .
8. The tenses are divided into Simple and Compound.
The Simple tenses are expressed by one word ;
66
as je plante
9. The Compound tenses are formed with the verbs avoir
MODEL VERB AVOIR . 15
to have , and être to be ( then called auxiliary ), and the past
participle of any other verb ; as j'aiplanté.
10. The verbs avoir and être do not follow any one model
of the four conjugations , and should be learned first in order
to help the pupil in conjugating all other verbs in their
compound tenses .

of the regular verbs . Take for example in the 3d conjuga
tion, the verb devoir ; drop the evoir and add the ( d ) to
the endings. Ex . : Future , je devrai, &c . Do the same
with any verb ending in evoir .
REMARKS
ON SOME VEBBS OF THE FIRST CONJUGATION .
28. In verbs whose Infinitive ends in ger, g must always
be followed by e mute , before a and o, in order to preserve
the soft sound of g ; as manger to eat , je mangeai ; juger
to judge , nous jugeons.
29. Verbs ending in cer, as placer, menacer, take a cedilla
under the c, before a , o, u , to preserve its soft articulation ;
as il plaça he, he placed , nous menaçons we threaten .
30. Verbs ending in eler, eter, generally double the l and
t , when followed by e mute, appeler to call , j'appelle, jeter
to throw , je jette. Except bourreler, congeler, déceler, geler ,
harceler, peler, acheter, colleter , coqueter, décolleter, étiqueter,
and the verbs where the e preceding the l or t is an é ac
cented , as recéler, empiéter, which require a grave accent
over the e before the l or t ; as il gèle it freezes , il achète he
buys . il révèle he reveals.
31. When the last syllable of the Infinitive of a verb in
er is preceded by é acute , or e mute , that letter is changed
é
into è grave before a mute syllable ; as céder, je cède ;
espérer, j'espère ; mener , je mène .
a
26
REMARKS
ON VRRBS .
32. Verbs which end in ayer , oyer, uyer , in the Infinitive,
retain i after y in the first and second persons plural of the
imperfect indicative , and the present subjunctive ; as nous
payions , nous employions , vous appuyiez ; que nous payions ,
que vous payiez ; from payer, employer, appuyer. When
y would be followed by e mute , it is changed into i ; as
payer, je paie, j'emploierai.
23. Verbs ending in ier in the Infinitive, as prier, lier,
are written with double ii in the first and second persons
plural of the imperfect of the indicative, and present of the
subjunctive ; as nous priions, vous priiez ; . que nous liions,
que vous liiez.
34. Verbs ending in éer in the Infinitive, as créer, agréer,
preserve the two ee throughout their conjugation, and con
sequently take three eee in the participle past feminine ; as
crée, m . , créee, f .
REMARKS
>
ON A FEW VERBS OF THE SECOND CONJUGATION .
35. All verbs in ir, the present participle of which is not
in issant, do not belong to the regular form .
36. The verb benir , to bless, has two participles past ,
bénit, m . , bénite, f . , as du pain bénit, which means, conse
crated by some religious ceremony ; and béni , m . , bénie , f. ,
for every other meaning of the verb ; as peuple béni de
Dieu, famille bénie du Ciel.
37. The verb hair, to hate , preserves the two dots on ë
throughout the conjugation ; except in the three persons
singular of the present of the indicative : je hais, tu hais ,
il hait ; and in the second person singular of the impera
tive, hais.
38. The verb fleurir, signifying to blossom , and to be
prosperous, has two imperfect tenses of the indicative, and
VERBS NEGATIVELY AND INTERROGATIVELY . 27
two participles present . When fleurir means to blossom ,
it makes fleurissait, fleurissant ; when it signifies to be
prosperous , it makes florissait, florissant : La France flor
issait sous l'empire .
39 .
REMARKS ON THE THIRD CONJUGATION .
Besides the note under rule 25 in this chapter , it will be
necessary to observe that devoir and redevoir take a cir
cumflex accent over the past participle masculine singular :
dú, redu.
40. In all verbs of this conjugation, the c of the root
takes a cedilla whenever it is followed by o or u ; as j'aper
çois, j'aperçus.
41 . REMARKS ON THE FOURTH CONJUGATION.
Some verbs which terminate in the infinitive in indre and
soudre, like peindre, craindre, joindre, absoudre, résoudre,
&c. , change in the three persons singular of the present
indicative, the ds, ds, d to 8, 8, ; as je joins, tu joins, il
joint ; je peins, tu peins, il peint ; je résous, tu résous, il
résout.
Verbs Conjugated Negatively and Interrogatively ,
42. See chapter III . , and ( 14 ) chapter VII .
43. When the verb is in the infinitive, ne pas, ne point,
ne plus, &c. , are generally placed before the verb : je vou
drais ne pas voir cela .
44. In English , in asking questions , we generally make
use of the expressions do, does, did, &c. , or of some tenses
of the verb to be ; but in French we use the simple forms
of the verb : Aimez -vous la musique ? like you music ? in
good English, do you like music ?
45. The e mute , when it terminates the first person sin
gular of the present indicative, takes an acute accent before
T
28 PASSIVE VERBS .
the pronoun je, in order to soften the pronunciation ; as
aimé-je ? do I love ?
46. When a verb has but one syllable in the first person
singular of the present indicative, and ends with two con
sonants, we make use of the expressien est-ce que, for
euphony : thus , instead of rends-je ? we say , est -ce que je
rends ?
47. The use of est- ce que is not limited to monosyllables
only , but it is frequently used in French with the tenses of
the Indicative and Conditional, and then the nominative
pronoun precedes the verb ; as est - ce que vous l'avez vu ?
have you seen him ? est-ce qu'il ne viendra pas ? will he not
come ?
N. B. — It is not considered necessary to give any model
verbs here , as they can be found in most any grammer. As
a general rule, the verb aimer is given . Ex . : Neg. Je
n'aime pas . Interrog. Aimé -je ? or est -ce que j'aime . In
.
terrog, with a Neg. N'aimé- je pas ? or est-ce que je n'aime
pas, &c.
VIII. PASSIVE VERBS .
1. They are conjugated by using the verb être in all its
tenses with the past participle of the active verb, which is
to be conjugated passively. This participle agrees , as an
adjective , in gender and number with the subject to which
it relates : 1 ° Le roi est estimé. 2 ° La reine est estimée.
3 ° Votre frère fut puni. 4° Votre soeur fut punie.
2. The conjugation of all passive verbs being simply the
conjugation of être in all its moods and tenses, to which is
added the participle past of any transitive verb , one tense
only is given as a model .

IX . NEUTER VERBS .
1. The neuter or intransitive verbs are conjugated like
active verbs. Their compound tenses are generally formed
with the auxiliary verb avoir ; as j'ai langui, j'avais dormi,
except some which are conjugated with être ; as Aller, to
go ; arriver, to arrive ; décéder, to die ; devenir, to become ;
éclore, to blow open ; entrer , to enter ; intervenir, to inter
vene ; mourir , to die ; naître, to be born ; parvenir, to suc
ceed ; provenir, to proceed ; revenir, to come back ; surve
nir , to come unexpectedly ; venir , to come.
2. Some neuter verbs are conjugated with both avoir
and être ; with avoir they express an action , with être the
state resulting from that action ; such as demurer, monter ,
rester , &c . Ex . :
With avoir .
With être.
He stopped six days at Paris. He remained at Paris.
Il a resté six jours à Paris. Il est resté à Paris .

X. REFLECTIVE VERBS .
1. The reflective or pronominal verbs are conjugated
with two pronouns of the same person (or with a noun and
30 EEFLECTIVE VERBS .
a pronoun ) throughout all their tenses , except in the Im
perative mood . The pronouns are je me, tu te, il or elle se,
nous nous, vous vous, ils or elles se .
2. They are conjugated in their simple tenses like the
regular verbs given as models ; but in their compound
tenses they always require the auxiliary verb être, to be,
whereas in English they take to have , and the participle
past must agree in gender and number with the objective
pronoun , if it be direct ; as Je me suis coupé, I have cut
myself ; elle s'est conpée, she has cut herself ; son fils s'est
coupé, his son has cut himself ; sa fille s'est coupée , his
daughter has cut herself.
3. The French generally use the reflective form instead
of the passive, as in English . Thus instead of saying la
France est divisée en 89 départements, they prefer saying la
France se divise , &c.
N. B .-- It is not considered necessary to give the whole
model reflective verb in this book , and therefore only the
following is given as example :

ON THE FORMATION OF THE TENSES .
The tenses of the verbs are divided into primitive and
derivative .
The primitive tenses are those which serve to form all
the others ; they are the following five :
1 The present of the infinitive ; ? the present participle ;
the past participle; ; * the present of the indicative ; and
5 the past definite.
The other simple tenses called derivative,
from the primitive tenses .
are formed
The present of the infinitive forms : 1st , the future, by
changing r , re or oir into rai ; as aimer, j'aimerai ; 2d , the
present of the conditional, by changing r , re or oir, into
rais ; as aimer, j'aimerais.
The present participle forms : 1st , the three persons
plural of the present indicative by changing ant into ons,
ez and ent ; donnant, nous donnons, &c .
( Excception : Verbs of the 3d conjugation, in the 3d pers .

IRREGULAR, IMPERSONAL AND DEFECTIVE VERBS .
pl . of the pres , indicative, change evant into oivent, rece
vant, ils recoivent.)
2d . The imperfect of the indicative, by changing ant into
ais : donnant, je donnais. 3d , the present subjunctive, by
changing ant into e : donnant, que je donne, & c .
( Exception : Verbs of the 3d conjugation , change evant
into oive : recevant, que je reçoive . )
The past participle forms : all the compound tenses by
means of avoir and être , j'ai estimé.
The present of the indicative forms the imperative by
suppressing the pronouns je,nous, vous ; asje donne, donne ;
nous donnons, don sons, & .
The past definite forms the imperfect subjunctive by
changing ai into asse for the 1st conjugation, and by add
ing se for the other three : fe donnai, je donnasse, finis,
finisse.
