THE
LOWER
SCHOOL
Spring Term 2023
Welcome
Welcome to the Spring edition of The Lower
School. As the days are getting lighter and longer,
and the spring flowers are beginning to add colour
to our vistas, your boys are continuing to blossom
and thrive at St Albans School.
The Lower School has ably embodied the School
motto of non nobis nati with Zachary, Will and
Alex organising a Cricket tournament to raise
money for Keech Hospices, and hot on their heels
came Filip, Aldwyn and Daniel who organised
a knock-out basketball competition that raised
valuable funds for Water Aid.
As always the boys have enjoyed a wealth of
academic opportunities. From Ben Kane, our
Roman military expert, a Geography trip to Kew
Gardens, a visit to see Noises Off in the West End
and an RPE trip to Bhaktivedanta Manor. There
has been a Hockey and Rugy tour to Birmingham
and the boys are developing new skills in their
weekly fixtures and practices. PSHEE has also
played an important role in the boys’ development
this term with both year groups enjoying active
and informative PSHEE days including theatre
plays, workshops and lectures shining a light on
bullying and communication.
There have been Assemblies comparing the
principles of team sport with personal conduct
and the Upper Sixth Form Prefects presented their
helpful guide to navigating the different sections
of the School.
House Competitions have unleashed some
friendly rivalry with House Music and House
Drama giving a stage to our talented pupils -
details to be announced soon!
This Spring edition showcases the wealth of
co-curricular activities in which the boys are
fortunate to participate. So sit back and enjoy
reading about their pastimes and see if you can
spot your son!
Wishing you all a lovely Easter holiday, and we
look forward to welcoming the boys back on
Monday 17 April eagerly anticipating Pen Arthur,
Enrichment Week, and the Lower School Interform
Challenge... More to follow next term.
SPRING TERM 2023
ART CLUB
In Art Club I am learning how to cultivate my skills and develop new
ones. I particularly enjoyed making clay sculptures such as a pumpkin
and a seashell.
Reuben, First Form
Book club
Book Club is a club in which
we read and share ideas
about books. We judge books
for book awards, and the
environment in the Junior
Library is really calm and
relaxed.
Tristan, Second Form
CAD CLUB
In CAD Club we are currently learning how to use SpaceClaim.
I particularly enjoyed making Christmas baubles last term in 2D design.
CHESS CLUB
Chess Club is a great way
of relaxing your mind and
forgetting about stressful
subjects. Chess Club is a good
way to enjoy yourself, as you
can play against a whole
variety of people.
If you are a dedicated and
very good chess player you can you can enter many
tournaments against other schools. It is fun to play
with experienced players and learn new chess moves
to improve your skills.
Chess is complicated and
mind teasing whilst stretching
my tactical ability. That’s why
I do chess!
CLASSICS CLUB
I really enjoy Classics Club as everyone participating
is very interactive and involved with the activities
that we do on a weekly basis.
Joshua, Second Form
William, First Form
CODING CLUB
In Coding Club I am slowly picking up Python which is a language of code.
I enjoy the fun activities and pieces of code I write. I have recently written a
code which figures out the n th term of a sequence given.

SPRING TERM 2023
Kailan, First Form
ENGLISH ALL-SORTS
English All-Sorts is where we enjoy completing
puzzles like Banangrams or crosswords and
sometimes challenge ourselves with some creative
writing.
I appreciate the variety of puzzles that we are given
and particularly enjoy doing crosswords to stimulate
my mind.
GREEN COUNCIL
Green Council is always something to look forward to on a Monday.
We meet and have fun discussing what we as a School can do to make
a positive impact on the planet (and eat snacks!).
JUNIOR DEBATING
I enjoy Debating Club as it lets you create speeches
and then argue for your speeches. It is also very good
as it teaches skills that will help you later in life.
Aran, First Form
Thomas, Second Form
language puzzle club
In Language Puzzle Club I particularly enjoy working
with obscure languages and alphabets. I love working
in a team to solve tricky linguistic puzzles; completing
the challenges is incredibly satisfying.
In Language Puzzle Club you use a great blend
of logical, analytical and language skills, which I
find very fun and satisfying. I especially enjoyed
trying to translate Japanese words into English
with only a group of the English words to help.
Daniel, Second Form
table tennis
In Table Tennis I really enjoy playing against
my friends competitively or just for fun. It is
open to those who want to play Table Tennis
for the School team, or just to improve their
playing skills.
VEX IQ CLUB
Vex IQ is a club where you get to build robots that
can later be used in competitions and events. It is
held on a Monday lunch time, Friday lunch time and
Thursday after school. It take place in the D&T block
either upstairs or downstairs and is run by by Mr
Omoyeni. I enjoy it because you have the freedom
to do what you want and it is always really satisfying
when it all comes together and works.
Zack, Second Form
Vex IQ is a fun club which gives you the
opportunity to design and build a robot
which must complete a series of tasks in the
simplest way. When built, the robots are
pitched against each other to see which one
is the best.
Luca, First Form
WARHAMMER CLUB
I really enjoy Warhammer and I’m glad I gave it a try. It is especially
good if you like painting or D&T, as it is a mixture of both.
