on Rabbit Mountain

Everyone says hello on Rabbit Mountain
under dead pine branches–
their limbs litter the dirt.
Dried leaves make
waves in bramble
pits, ditches and
dust clouds aloft
a sea of green nails.
Their voices chip the rocks,
crack the twigs and brittle the earth.
They make the weeds tumble,
the snakes rattle and deer poke their heads,
swimming through morning dew
as bushes crackle awake
beneath tired feet as the sun rises.
With trees their umbrella,
they sing hello.
