Theatre at Front Range Community CollegeA Conversation with Dana FrombyMy favorite type of theatre is new plays. Theatre canrespond rapidly to our changing world because it iswritten and produced relatively quickly. New Plays canbe local, regional, or national. Each play responds toour world in a unique way that addresses the world welive in today. This aspect is why I champion studentwrittenwork, so students can explore the narrativesthey are interested in telling.I plan to develop our fall production into an annualnew play event for Northern Colorado. We are inour second year of this plan. As the annual eventcontinues, I see staged readings of one-act plays andfull-length works written by our students. This visionwould support student writers, designers, and actorscollaborating on work throughout the year. It wouldbe presented to the public for two weeks during thefall semester.The Greek Renascence class looks at the developmentof theatre history through the advancement ofcommunication technology. From this organizingprinciple, the course examines how theatre isultimately linked to the deeply human need totell stories. Looking at theatre history through acommunication lens encourages students to analyzehow ideas are shared through performance. Theatre isone of the oldest forms of communication; students getto investigate how theatre is still relevant and impactsnewer forms of communication today.Enticing more students to theatre is a great question.I think the answer lies in collaboration with otherdepartments. As I mentioned earlier, the practice ofdoing theatre develops communication skills, creativity,and critical thinking. Our automotive technology, earlychildhood development, and nursing candidates couldbenefit from the theatre's critical thinking challenges.I have participated in a cross-discipline collaborationbetween a school of medicine and a school of theatricalarts. In 2018 I collaborated in developing a joint theatreand nursing course for Ohio University. The classinvited nurses to write different outcomes or scenesof patient interactions with healthcare providers. Thiscollaboration used theatre skills to help nurses becomebetter communicators with their patients. I believefinding ways for theatre to share its communicationskill-building potential would be great for manystudents at Front Range Community College.HEATREFRCCMGD.COM | 202233
