The action was captured for posterity by cameras from ITV’s The Big Match, with commentator Brian Moore famously yelling “Rodney Marsh’s hat-trick! hoops A match report by Jack Welling in The People newspaper read: “What price Rodney Marsh now? The idol of Loftus Road turned on all his old magic, collected a sparkling hat-trick, and completely stole the show. “…Marsh cut Birmingham’s five-man defence to shreds, feinting, back-heeling, side-footing… all the Marsh repertoire. And he capped it with some rocket drives.” Danny Blanchflower wrote in the Sunday Express: “Rodney Marsh made it five with the best goal I’ve seen this season. He got the ball just inside Birmingham’s 18-yard box, surrounded by Birmingham shirts. He did a sort of Irish jig with the ball, hypnotising the three or four defenders before spinning from the hips and crashing a powerful shot on the turn low into the corner of the net.” Looking back on his playing days, Marsh said: “I had the most magnificent QPR career that anyone could ever have and the fans were brilliant to me. “Playing at Loftus Road was absolutely wonderful. The atmosphere was always electric and I used to love it when the <strong>Rangers</strong> crowd started singing my name. “They had that “ROD-NEEE…ROD-NEEE…” chant. It used to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. “I always had a superstition throughout my career that I had to wear the number 10 shirt. Since I first wore it at Loftus Road, the QPR number 10 shirt has become very special. “My generation played football purely for the love of it all. I simply relished appearing in games, scoring goals and winning matches for the R’s, it was what I loved to do. “I was completely spontaneous and I played that way too.
