OUR HEAD COACH SETS THE
SCENE FOR TODAY’S GAME...
I
know there’s plenty of work to be done at this
club. There are reasons things haven’t gone
the way everyone would have wanted them to
recently and I’m looking forward to getting my
teeth into those and making changes. But first
and foremost, we must get enough points to
keep QPR in the Championship.
On the whole, we looked a stronger squad with the
players we had coming back from injury against
Wigan last weekend. Now we’ve got those players
back, we’ve been working hard on integrating
them into training and strengthening the cohesion
of the team. Spirit, team ethic and togetherness
is always going to be important at any level, but
especially in crucial periods like this.
Again, unfortunately, we paid the price for making
mistakes in both boxes early in the game at Wigan.
In each of the last two games, there was little
in it and, if anything, we probably just edged the
opposition on chances. However, we can’t keep
conceding early in games – I’ve told the boys
they’ve got to make better starts and stay secure.
Especially in this league, goals are crucial – very
rarely do we see that big a margin of victory and
we’ve got to make sure we are solid in our box
as well as threatening the opposition in theirs.
We’ve been working hard this week on different
ways of breaking defences down because teams
are packing defences against us, especially when
they score first – and then they’re even tougher
to break down. The higher up the leagues you go,
teams become better at defending and once they
go 1-0 up, they can shut up shop quite easily.
I’d like to welcome Ryan Lowe, who I’ve managed
against previously in League One, and Preston
North End and their fans to Loftus Road today. I
made my league debut for Preston back in 1991
and you always remember your roots. I have some
great memories from the early part of my career
and I know what a passionate set of Lancastrians
their fans are, but I want them to go away
disappointed at the end of this afternoon’s game.
We’re going to have to be at our best to keep
them quiet and hopefully put a dent in Preston’s
impressive away record this season.
I’m also delighted to welcome back members
of the 1992/93 squad who finished fifth in the
Premier League and made QPR the top London
team that season, a fantastic time for the club.
The building blocks of the club and its history
is something we take great pride in at QPR. I’m
proud to have been part of that history as a player
10 or 11 years later when I was fortunate enough
to play in another iconic QPR team that recovered
from administration and relegation to get
promoted. I’m in awe of that 1992/93 squad and I
know how important it is to recognise players who
have been fantastic servants to the club – they
should be remembered very fondly.
Les Ferdinand has worked hard with me and
offered fantastic support since the day I walked
in the door and people like him and Andy Sinton
have been great QPR stalwarts. All they want is the
best for this club, they’re trying their hardest to
rediscover the good times and I know I can help to
bring those back. I need a little bit of time, but right
now we need some results. We’re going through a
testing time yet, as I’ve said before, if you give your
support through the bad times, it makes the good
times feel even better.
Let’s get this place rocking!
family.
DEAN MCKEE
(30/1/92-7/4/20)
Three years today since
Dean passed. Having
Deano’s nephews Richie,
Rio and George,
as mascots today means
so much to us as a
family, most importantly
to our Ma/Mum.
It’s a lovely tribute that
Deano’s poem still gets
played before the game
starts. Me and my boy
Richie, in the Loft Lower P
Block, always have a
moment of reflection
watching it.
A big thank you to every
single QPR fan, also a big
thank you from me and
my family to James Grant
for organising Dean’s flag.
We will have our great
moments again. Believe!
lifelong QPR supporter.
Come on you R’s!
PHIL EVETT
23rd June 1953 – 12th
March 2023
Our cousin Phil Evett, who
lived in Devon, sadly died
in March after a 10-year
battle with cancer.
Phil was a lover of football
in general but absolutely
passionate about his
team, QPR. He travelled
to Loftus Road as often
as he could, as well as
away games where
possible.
He would have been
delighted and
overwhelmed to know
that his name had been
mentioned at today’s
game. On behalf of Phil’s
family and friends, we
wish you every success.
A MESSAGE
FROM THE EFL
• As we approach the
season finale, people
must respect that the
pitch is for players and
stands for spectators
• It is against the law to
enter the pitch at any
time and anyone who
does so will face a ban
and police action
• Recent pitch invasions
have brought football
bans, police prosecution
and criminal records -
this can impact
employment, education
and international travel
• Everybody should feel
safe at football but pitch
invasions endanger
everyone because it’s
impossible to tell the
difference between
celebration and an attack
• Entering the pitch
could also result in
penalties for the club, so
do not spoil it for the
team or other fans
• From fans, to stewards
to players, we all have a
role to play in keeping
each other safe on
matchdays
• We need to protect
each other, the club and
the game
MARK
SUROWIEC
20th March 1956 – 10th
March 2023
Just short of his 67th
birthday, Mark supported
QPR for his whole life and
was looking forward to
spending his retirement
at Loftus Road. Mark, who
looked after thousands of
children over his 24 years
at Gumley House School,
Middlesex, died following
a short illness.
Mark knew every player,
every game, every point
and every celebration. He
was grateful to all the
fellow supporters he
cheered with at home
and those who travelled
with him to away games.
He will be deeply missed.
HARRY
Happy 11th birthday to Harry
Dunn. We hope you’ve had an
amazing day being a mascot!
Lots of love, Mum, Chris and all
your brothers.
RILEY
Happy 13th birthday Riley
Newman-Jackman, we hope you
have a brilliant day as a mascot
and a very happy birthday for
CHRIS Willock and Ilias Chair
returned to action but Rangers
were edged out by an early
spot-kick from Wigan’s Max
Power at the DW Stadium.
Power lived up to his name,
blasting the penalty beyond
Seny Dieng after Leon Balogun,
also back in the side following
a lengthy injury absence, was
adjudged to have brought down
Danel Sinani.
Willock stung the palms of
Latics goalkeeper Ben Amos
in response, while Dieng was
alert to keep out Callum Lang’s
deflected effort at the other end.
Chair – who came off the bench
to replace Jimmy Dunne for the
second half – also went close
with a curling free-kick as the R’s
applied pressure.
But they were unable to find a
off a diving stop to keep out
Kenneth Paal’s half-volley in
added time.
hoops
ILIAS, it was great to see you back on the
pitch at Wigan. How did that 45-minute runout
go, from a fitness point of view?
I felt perfect and I’m happy to be back. Basically I
was ready to start the game but I wasn’t cleared
medically and when I got on my fitness levels
were great – I didn’t feel out of place or anything.
The result, unfortunately, was somewhat
less positive…
Yes, we didn’t win, but I think it’s often difficult to
look at the positives within an overall negative.
By that, I mean look at the players who were
coming back. Kenneth Paal, Ethan Laird, Chris
Willock and Leon Balogun all came back, as well
as myself. With those players and the ones we
already have playing consistently – in the games
we’ve played together, we’ve shown great things.
I think that’s something to be excited about
ahead of these last seven games and hopefully
we can show the fans what we’re made of.
In particular, having your ‘partner in crime’
Chris Willock back must give the entire squad
a boost…
Of course it does. Chris Willock is a good player
– he can create and score goals and we know
he can help us in the offensive end of the pitch,
so we’re delighted to have him playing again but
also delighted to have the rest back. It’s never
all about one, two or three players, it’s about the
whole team.
When you had to go off injured against
Blackburn in February, did you fear that might
be it for you this season?
No, I was not concerned by that. I knew I was
going to come back and help the team, no
matter what the outcome of that injury was
– even if it was something big. There was no
chance I was going to call it quits, even if I had to
play on one leg! It’s a different mentality for me,
I cannot accept being out for so long. Of course
16 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
sometimes you can’t do anything, there are
freakish injuries and I feel for players that do
get those. But I believe that, if you’re mentally
switched on, nothing is impossible.
Moving on to today’s opponents, Preston
North End, you missed our win at Deepdale
for a very good reason – featuring for
Morocco in the World Cup third-place playoff.
What did you take away from that whole
experience in Qatar?
It was a once in a lifetime experience and
I will never forget it. Playing at the highest
level, against the highest level of opposition,
watching and learning from them and to
eventually get on the pitch – and play against
one of my heroes in Luka Modric – was
unbelievable. It made me realise that in
football anything is possible, that I too can
achieve that destiny, all you have to do is keep
working hard and trust in the process. It was
a lovely time in my life and it was also good
to come back and give advice to the younger
players at QPR about my experiences out
there.
On current form, we’ll start as underdogs
this afternoon but – as we showed in the
recent Watford game – is that a situation
that can bring the best out of the team?
I don’t like the whole mentality of underdog or
favourite – in some of the last 22 games we’ve
been underdog, in some we’ve been favourite
but we’ve come away with two wins. We have
to go out there, not think about stuff like that
and just perform to the best of our capability,
as an individual first and then as a team and
that will shine through. If we do that, with the
players that are back, I think it will be a good
day for us and I’ll say that with confidence.
hoops
You’ve worn the captain’s armband a number
of times this season. Although you’re still 25,
did that make you feel you’re now a senior
player at QPR?
It’s kind of weird to think about that! I never
thought in my wildest dreams I would be a
captain, anywhere, so it’s such an honour for
me to be captain of this team and I have a lot
of respect for the managers that have given
me the armband. They know I wear my heart on
my sleeve and, despite criticism or bad form or
whatever, I just go out there and give everything
I have for QPR, for the players, the manager
and the fans. I want to perform at my best –
because I owe everything to the club. I hope I
can wear the armband again in the future, it’s
something I’m very proud of and something
that makes my family proud too. It’s a lot of
responsibility, trying to give advice to the young
ones coming through, trying to keep my head
as clear as possible and learning every day. You
want to keep improving as a player and a leader.
With seven games remaining, including today,
is it fair to say this is the time to stand up and
be counted?
We can’t sit here feeling sorry for ourselves
because, as players, we put ourselves in this
position and it’s our task to get out of this
position. Yes, we’ve had four managers this year,
there’s been a lot of changes on the playing side
and we’ve gone from highs to lows – you can
look at it that way, but now we’ve got to fight for
survival. We have to take responsibility and we
have to get a win, it doesn’t matter how. So much
pressure comes off your shoulders if you get a
win and hopefully we can do that today.
Columnist
BEN SUMMER
‘R’ GENERATION WRITER BEN SUMMER
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS-ON IN W12
“Scotland are 2-0 up.” “Oh, are they?”
“Against Spain.” “Oh, right… against
SPAIN?”
I was actually at the Wales v Latvia game while
Lyndon Dykes was leading the line against a
team full of Champions League winners and
Manchester City players.
Truth be told, I wasn’t that focused on the
scores elsewhere – not just because I was
swept up in a wave of bucket-hat-wearing,
Hen-Wlad-Fy-Nhadau-singing Welsh
patriotism (although I was), but because it
got me thinking.
In Wales, I saw a more successful version of
what QPR had been attempting prior to the
international break, and it gave me a bit of
hope. Allow me to spin this laboured analogy
out a little further.
Wales were defensively well-drilled, moved
the ball well via some very attacking fullbacks,
had a diminutive forward making
himself a nuisance for defenders, and a big
tall striker who is surprisingly good in the
build-up with the ball at his feet. Sound
familiar?
I can’t labour that last point enough. Kieffer
Moore, at least from what I’ve seen of him in
person in Cardiff, is an identical footballer to
Lyndon Dykes. Moore might be playing in a
league above, and fair play to him for bagging
a few Premier League goals, but I’ve never
quite seen a comparison like it.
What we’ve been seeing from QPR, home and
away, has been frustrating, but I don’t think
the differences between that QPR team and
the Wales team I watched the following week
were huge.
I’m not going to pretend there aren’t any
problems at QPR. I’d be an idiot if I tried
to. Plus, Wales also didn’t confidently beat
Latvia and the tone west of the Severn was
almost of muted, begrudging appreciation
of a narrow win against massively inferior
opponents. But a marginal, well-worked 1-0?
I could get used to that.
We’ve seen these same players show
defensive nous in games and seasons past,
we’ll need more accuracy with the longer balls
and a calmer head when we’re in possession,
but the optimist in me sees what we could
build towards.
Yes, it needs building – Birmingham City
wasn’t an easy watch, Blackpool even harder,
Wigan not much better bar a few moments.
Plus, Wales play through the midfield more
often, and if you offered me Ethan Ampadu at
QPR I’d bite your hand off. Hell, if you offered
me an ageing Aaron Ramsey I’d probably have
a bit of a nibble on your hand.
But Wales, under Rob Page, have a knack for
working with what they’ve got and making a
group of players into a team. Gareth Ainsworth
had 11 years at Wycombe to build on those
principles – let’s see what he can do here.
SINTON
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and welcome back
to Loftus Road for today’s Championship
match against Preston North End.
Today we as a club also welcome many of the
playing squad and coaching staff from the
1992/93 season. This was the first season of the
Premier League, when we finished fifth in the
table and were London’s highest-ranked team.
It was a team I was hugely proud to be a part of,
a team that had great players all over the pitch,
a team that had leaders throughout and a team
that loved to pull on the blue and white hoops
and play at Loftus Road, which was often full and
rocking as we continually took on the so-called
big boys and sent them away with nothing.
We had great characters, a fantastic work ethic and
togetherness, led by a brilliant manager in Gerry
Francis who we would all run through a brick wall
for. Gerry was the biggest influence as a coach/
manager in my own career and I know that view
is shared by many of the lads who played for him.
Aided by his coaching staff and backroom team,
he was demanding in what he wanted from you,
made you believe in yourself and in each other and
was tactically brilliant. He really made you think
about your own game, how to improve and what
your role in the team was, with and without the ball.
Gerry knew what certain players needed to get the
best out of them and created a team that was a
pleasure and a privilege to play in at QPR.
Not everyone from that group is able to be here
today for various reasons, whether that’s work
commitments, holidays, living overseas or just
unavailable to attend. Sadly, two huge players
in that group are no longer with us – there is
probably not a day that goes by when I don’t
recall the great Ray Wilkins and the great Alan
McDonald, giants in the dressing-room and
out on the pitch in terms of what they gave the
team. They were two wonderful players, but more
importantly two wonderful men who I know this
group all thought the world of – we really did,
along with everyone connected to QPR. No doubt
both Ray and Macca will be fondly remembered
today as we reminisce on those great times we all
shared together. Is it really 30 years ago?
I can’t wait to see everyone together again and
hope all who are attending have a great day back
here at Loftus Road. All the squad in attendance,
along with the management staff, will come on
the pitch at half-time and I am sure will get a
fantastic reception from you, our fans. I am often
reminded when I speak to our fans who saw that
team play here how good we were – what a team!!
Under the management of Ryan Lowe,
Preston have had another good season and
are just five points off the play-off positions.
They come here in good form, having lost
just once in their last nine games and have an
excellent away record with nine wins on their
travels to date, so we know they will provide
strong opposition this afternoon.
We go into the game knowing exactly where we
are and what is at stake. We cannot hide from the
fact that only two wins in 23 league games has left
us in a relegation scrap. A horrendous run such as
this, at any level, is going to put you in trouble but
the good thing is we have games to do something
about it and that something has to start today.
In recent games we have conceded really early,
which puts you on the back foot. First and
foremost, the objective is to start well and give
nothing away, which gives us a foundation to
build from rather than having to chase the game.
As well as being defensively much more solid, we
have to start working opposition defences and
goalkeepers more, creating more chances and
ultimately scoring goals in order to earn points.
It is really good to see some of our players
returning after injury, which gives the dressingroom,
the staff, everyone at the club and the fans
a big lift. Everyone has a huge part to play in the
remaining seven games, to win as many points
as we can and make sure we stay in this division.
As I said, there is no point hiding from it. Yes, that
brings added pressure but it’s the same for other
teams around us and the players, staff and the
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
squads who deal with that type of pressure best
will come through and out the other side. We
need passion, grit, determination, desire, fight
and every other word you can think of in terms
of giving it our all on the pitch, but we also need
calmness and quality in the heat of the battles
that lie ahead. Cool heads will be vital and we need
to find that added quality when moments present
themselves in games – whether it’s the right pass
selection, a good quality cross, a finish, a tackle
or block to prevent the opposition scoring, an
important header or a vital save. There is more
than enough experience in our squad to navigate
the coming games and get the points we need.
No-one will hand us anything on a plate. Where we
finish is in our own hands – we have to grab hold of
the situation and not let go.
Your support has been incredible at both home
and away games, it really has. With the situation
we now find ourselves in, the team need you
more than ever. Let’s all get behind Gareth, his
staff and his players today and help them get the
three valuable points that are at stake.
Enjoy the game and...
COME ON YOU R’s
Preston North End
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
INAUGURAL winners of
the Football League,
Preston have not
featured in the top flight
since 1961 – but they
are still in with a shout
of ending that exile as
they arrive in W12 this
afternoon.
The Lilywhites, who
have finished squarely
in mid-table in almost
every season since
they returned to the
Championship in 2015,
are five points adrift of the
play-off places but have
lost just once in their last
nine games.
That blemish was a painful
one – a 4-0 thumping
at Middlesbrough that
represented North End’s
heaviest defeat of the
season – but overall their
form on the road has been
impressive throughout
the campaign.
Preston have collected
maximum points on their
travels on nine occasions,
including trips to Luton,
Coventry, Norwich and
Blackburn – where they
triumphed 4-1 – and
also won at Rotherham
a few days prior to their
Riverside mauling.
At the start of the season,
Preston found goals
hard to come by, with
Brad Potts’ winner at
Kenilworth Road the only
time they found the net
in their first six fixtures –
although their defensive
record remained flawless
during that time.
Initially, Ryan Lowe’s side
struggled to hit their straps
on home turf and QPR’s
1-0 victory at Deepdale
just before Christmas was
the first of three straight
defeats, their worst run of
the season.
However, North End
have proved far harder
to beat during the last
two months and will be
seeking to take their tally
of away wins into double
figures this afternoon.
The Gaffer
A
PROMOTION winner
in both of his previous
managerial roles, Ryan
Lowe was the man charged
with steering North End up
the Championship table when
he succeeded Frankie McAvoy
Lowe, who started out in the
youth team at hometown club
Liverpool, went on to forge an
18-year playing career that
took him around the third and
fourth tiers and included three
separate spells at Bury.
Having featured in two
promotion-winning sides for
the Shakers, Lowe launched
his managerial career at Gigg
Lane, eventually securing the
role at the end of the 2017/18
campaign after two previous
spells as caretaker boss.
He guided Bury to promotion
from League Two in his first
season – an achievement
that convinced Plymouth, who
had just made the reverse
journey into the EFL basement,
to lure the young manager to
Home Park.
Lowe repeated his promotion
success with Argyle in 2020 and,
after keeping them in League
One the following year, their
impressive form during the first
half of last season earned him a
move to Deepdale.
Originally established as
they won both the
1946:
Despite having to wait
until he was 24 for his
debut due to the Second
made up for lost time
by scoring in a 3-2 win
over Leeds – the first of a
Underdogs Preston led
twice in the FA Cup final
through Doug Holden
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 3
PRESTON NORTH END 0
SATURDAY 6TH JANUARY 1973
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
QUEENS PARK RANGERS kept up their push for
promotion with a fantastic display of crisp passing
football and dynamic goals.
The R’s went into this fixture in second place in
Division Two, while Preston were eighth but only four
points behind.
It was a cold and drizzly day in west London and the
pitch was soft. Rangers were decimated by injuries,
with six first-choice players ruled out, including
captain Terry Venables. So boss Gordon Jago
reshuffled his pack, adopting a 4-2-4 formation that
tore the visitors’ defence to shreds.
Early QPR pressure paid off as the opening goal
arrived on 18 minutes when wide man Mike Ferguson,
playing only his third full game of the season, sent a
long pass out to the right. This allowed Givens to beat
North End’s offside trap and coolly drill in off the far
post to cement his place as Division Two’s leading
goalscorer.
Preston offered very little in reply and only mounted
two serious attacks in the whole game. Alec Spark
sent a free-kick through the wall but R’s keeper Phil
Parkes made a stunning save, then Alan Tarbuck’s
header was brilliantly stopped by Parkes at full stretch.
Our second goal came in the 68th minute and
Ferguson was again the provider. He cleverly picked
out Givens, who lashed home his 18th of the season.
After substitute Barry Salvage had powered a couple
of efforts inches off target, Rangers completed the
INTERVIEW: TONY INCENZO
IT’S NOW 30 YEARS SINCE ONE OF
THE BIGGEST SHAKE-UPS IN ENGLISH
FOOTBALL – THE LAUNCH OF THE
PREMIER LEAGUE.
As founder members of the new breakaway division,
Queens Park Rangers made their mark on that inaugural
1992/93 campaign, finishing in fifth place as London’s
highest-ranked team.
We take a wander through memories of that season with
the players and staff who made it happen… next it’s
part two with manager GERRY FRANCIS.
Gerry Francis
was a key
member of
the QPR side
that achieved
the club’s
highest league
position of
second in
1975/76
before
returning to
Loftus Road
for two spells
as manager
GERRY, did you feel there were
outstanding players throughout
the squad when we finished fifth
in 1992/93?
Yes, they all did really well. There were
two goalkeepers in the squad – Tony
Roberts and Jan Stejskal. Obviously
we had Alan McDonald, Danny Maddix
and Darren Peacock at the back with
Clive Wilson, Dave Bardsley and Rufus
Brevett as the full-backs. Then it was
Andrew Impey and Andy Sinton on
the flanks as I liked to play with wide
players. The midfielders were Ian
Holloway, Ray Wilkins and Simon Barker.
Les Ferdinand was up front alongside
people like Bradley Allen, Dennis Bailey,
Gary Penrice, Devon White and Garry
Thompson. I also had young players
in Justin Channing, Maurice Doyle,
Michael Meaker and Karl Ready who
played their part.
That was the year Les Ferdinand came
to the fore, scoring 20 goals in 37
league appearances. He seemed to
really blossom in your time as Rangers
manager…
I did a lot of work with Les and he
eventually developed into one of
the most sought after strikers in the
Premier League. Before I became QPR
manager in 1991, Les was a young
player at the club who had been sent
out on loan to Brentford and Turkish
team Beşiktaş. Then when I took over
at Loftus Road, I felt Les had a lack of
confidence in himself. I had previously
seen him play for the R’s reserves when
Right: Francis
guided
Rangers to
fifth place in
the inaugural
Premier
League
season, ahead
of every other
London club
I was manager of Bristol Rovers and I
thought: “I could really do something
with this boy.” You have to look at the
assets a player possesses. Les had
brilliant pace and a great ability to leap
– in fact, he was very good in the air for
someone of his size at 5’11’’ with an
incredible spring and timing. However,
he needed to work on his touch and
control. He needed to know where to
be and where not to be in and around
things, just football knowledge that a
coach can give to people. But most
importantly, I felt Les needed an arm
around him with someone to believe
in him. That applies to lots of players.
It is all psychological – whether it is
life or whether it is football, it makes
no difference. I remember on my first
day as QPR boss, I called Les in to my
office at the training ground – in fact,
Les confirms this in his book. I told him:
“Les, I nearly signed you before when
I was at Bristol Rovers. I think you can
go on to play for England.” He started
laughing, so I said: “What are you
laughing at?” And he replied: “Play for
England? I struggle sometimes to get
in the reserve team here!” And I said:
“Yeah, but if you’ve got the belief then I
went on to
manage
three years
before his
return to QPR
can teach you.” That’s what you do with
players as a manager or a coach, you try
over that period of time you are involved
to make the individual and the team
better. Obviously once the goals started
to come for Les, his confidence just
grew along with all of his attributes. He
learned things, he worked on his control
and his touch when balls were played up
to him. He learned where to be in the
box and we saw the results.
Ray Wilkins kept everything ticking
over for you in midfield, of course…
I watched a lot of videos of Ray at
QPR the year before I took over. What
I felt was he had got into the habit of
dropping back to get the ball off the
R’s defenders. He was a marvellous
passer of the ball with great vision to
spread it around, but when he picked up
possession from deep, the pass that he
gave didn’t hurt opponents in my view
as he was too far away from the real
action. So I pushed Ray on further where
he could impact more with his passes
straight into attacking players like Les
Ferdinand, Andy Sinton or Andrew
Impey. That was really important and it
changed Ray’s play for me. He became
so much more effective and dangerous
– even scoring more goals himself in and
around the box because he was there.
It was really important to change Ray’s
mentality that he had adopted for a few
years by pushing him forward a bit more,
therefore he was picking up balls in really
dangerous areas where his pass could
make a difference – which it did.
This might not be mentioned much,
but in-game management was also
significant that season. We might have
been 1-0 down at half-time but you
would tweak things and we’d go on to
win the match….
That’s what it’s all about really, the
tactical situation – seeing things
and knowing what’s right and what’s
wrong. You can set out your team to
play in a certain way after having prematch
reports on the opposition and
everything else, but they might change
their tactics and surprise you by
doing things that are causing you real
problems. Players on the field
can’t always see it so that is what you
have to do as the manager – and it is so
vital that the players know the manager
can identify what is going on and put
things right.
Overall, it sounds as if you have very
fond memories of our first Premier
League season at QPR…
Yes, it was a tremendous time for
Rangers supporters – I think they
enjoyed the football and the way we
played as a team. Obviously everyone
enjoys it when you are winning. There
were some fantastic games, not just
at Loftus Road but away from home as
well. It was a pleasure to manage and
coach those players. I had previously
captained Queens Park Rangers in their
best ever top-flight finish of second
in 1975/76, then I managed the team
to their joint second highest position
in 1992/93. That is something I am
very proud of, alongside my 20-year
association with the R’s.
HALF A CENTURY HAS PASSED SINCE QPR WON PROMOTION
TO THE TOP FLIGHT FOR ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN THE CLUB’S
THE PROGRAMME: Sixteen pages,
EDITORIAL SNIPPETS: In his ‘BUSH
TELEGRAPH’ editorial notes, QPR club
secretary Ron Phillips wrote: ‘Only a
handful of games remain to play this
season…in the knowledge that time
is running out for our opponents in
the promotion race. If we can match
the magical figure of 50 points this
afternoon (with a win), most of them
will probably give up hope and start
planning the campaign for next season.
‘…The record home goals scored by
Rangers in Second Division football
stands at 47 (1969/70), so five more in
our remaining four home matches will
break that record….The record number
of points scored by us in the Second
Division is 58 (in 1967/68), so we need
to get 11 more from our remaining
eight games in order to shatter that
particular record – and this would
be the greatest new record of all of
course!’
article entitled ‘RANGERS HOME
the second placed R’s eight
points clear of third spot: ‘SO
QUEENS PARK RANGERS will
almost certainly be back in the
First Division. And we don’t
suppose anyone will suggest
that they are not worthy of
promotion. Rangers have
enjoyed a magnificent season,
maintaining such a hectic pace
that they have long since left all
their challengers – apart from
(leaders) Burnley, of course –
lagging way behind them.
‘…Though many of Rangers’
players were developed in the
club’s nursery, they have not
been afraid to splash out in
the transfer market when the
occasion has demanded. A
club record £110,000 fee was
involved when they signed
Stan Bowles from Carlisle in
September – Stan scored on
his Rangers debut and, with 14
goals, is now one of the club’s
top scorers – but this was
surpassed when they agreed to
a £160,000 figure for Burnley’s
England under-23 midfield
player Dave Thomas a few
weeks later.
‘Perhaps the most successful
buy of all, though, was Republic
of Ireland international striker
Don Givens who shot right to
the top of their scoring list and
stayed there. He has scored 24
times so far and is the Second
Division’s leading marksman.
Givens, who had spent the
two previous seasons with
Luton, began his league career
with Manchester United and
Rangers got him for a bargain
£38,000.’
HEROES
RODNEY MARSH VS BIRMINGHAM CITY
SATURDAY 17TH OCTOBER 1970
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
LEGENDARY number 10 Rodney Marsh scored
one of the best hat-tricks of all time as QPR
beat Birmingham City 5-2 at Loftus Road.
The action was captured for posterity by
cameras from ITV’s The Big Match, with
commentator Brian Moore famously yelling
“Rodney Marsh’s hat-trick! Oh what incredible
skill by Marsh!” when the third goal flew in.
hoops
A match report by Jack Welling in The People
newspaper read: “What price Rodney Marsh
now? The idol of Loftus Road turned on all his
old magic, collected a sparkling hat-trick, and
completely stole the show.
“…Marsh cut Birmingham’s five-man defence to
shreds, feinting, back-heeling, side-footing…
all the Marsh repertoire. And he capped it with
some rocket drives.”
Danny Blanchflower wrote in the Sunday Express:
“Rodney Marsh made it five with the best goal
I’ve seen this season. He got the ball just inside
Birmingham’s 18-yard box, surrounded by
Birmingham shirts. He did a sort of Irish jig with
the ball, hypnotising the three or four defenders
before spinning from the hips and crashing a
powerful shot on the turn low into the corner of
the net.”
Looking back on his playing days, Marsh said:
“I had the most magnificent QPR career that
anyone could ever have and the fans were
brilliant to me.
“Playing at Loftus Road was absolutely
wonderful. The atmosphere was always electric
and I used to love it when the Rangers crowd
started singing my name.
“They had that “ROD-NEEE…ROD-NEEE…”
chant. It used to make the hairs on the back of
my neck stand up.
“I always had a superstition throughout my
career that I had to wear the number 10 shirt.
Since I first wore it at Loftus Road, the QPR
number 10 shirt has become very special.
“My generation played football purely for the
love of it all. I simply relished appearing in games,
scoring goals and winning matches for the R’s, it
was what I loved to do.
“I was completely spontaneous and I played that
way too. I was born to be a footballer and so it
was a joy to me.”
What are your strengths as a player and what
do you need to work on?
I am a creative attacking winger who is very
good in 1v1 situations. Something I need to
work on is cutting in and shooting.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
I would say Neymar is my favourite player
and also the one I was inspired by. I love his
confidence, flair and ability on the pitch.
When was the first football match you attended?
I can’t remember the exact first game I went to, but
I would have been about six or seven and it would
have been a Fulham game at Craven Cottage.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I see myself in a first-team set-up and playing
consistent football.
Which of your team-mates do you see as a
future coach or manager?
Alfie Tuck is definitely the number one
candidate, I believe he would be a good coach
or manager.
Which stadium in the world would you most like
to play in and why?
Wembley, because it’s a world-class stadium
and it would just feel like an achievement to be
playing there.
If there was one thing you could change about
football, what would it be?
It would be bad officiating with referees and
linesmen.
THIS COMMEMORATIVE POSTCARD, WHICH BELONGS TO
QPR FAN RICHARD PUTNEY, DEPICTS THE RANGERS TEAM
WHO WERE CROWNED SOUTHERN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS AT
THE END OF THE 1911/12 SEASON.
It was Rangers’ second
championship – the first had
been secured four years earlier,
also under the management of
James Cowan – and again they
finished just ahead of Plymouth
Argyle to take the title.
Cowan’s team, who won eight
of their first 10 matches,
stumbled towards the end of
the campaign but recovered
to secure the title with a home
victory against Clapton Orient
and a 1-1 draw at Norwich.
They twice attracted crowds
of 25,000 to Park Royal and
topped that at White City,
with a 26,000 attendance
recorded for a 1-1 draw against
Southampton in April.
Richard, who has collected
QPR memorabilia for several
years, recalled: “My father was
a sports reporter’s assistant
and I was taken to many of the
games in the 1970s and 80s –
we used to go to QPR the most.
That is how my brother and I
became avid fans.
“I remember Alec Stock
taking me into the changingroom
with my father and asking
who my favourite player was. I
said ‘Rodney’ and he called him
over to speak to me and sign
an autograph.”
interesting or unusual
QPR memorabilia? If so,
we’d love to see some
ELLIE Dorey’s 15-minute hat-trick left Rangers
with too much work to do as they went down to
AFC Wimbledon in front of a four-figure crowd
at Loftus Road.
Dorey rattled in three goals inside the opening
quarter of an hour, underlining the Dons’ promotion
credentials before the home side fought back.
Ellie Searle set up skipper Kasha Petit to pull a
goal back from close range – but Wimbledon
restored their three-goal advantage before
half-time as Emma Plewa converted a penalty
following a foul on Becki Bath.
The R’s continued to battle and Erin Pope went
close with a free-kick before Grace Stanley was
foiled by Dons goalkeeper Faye Baker.
Rangers did eventually find the net for a second
time with 15 minutes remaining as Laura
Hennessy pounced on a defensive mix-up and
fired into the top corner, but the visitors saw out
the rest of the game to wrap up victory.
QPR return to action on Sunday when they travel
to Chesham United.
GRANT AWARD BOOSTS RANGERS’ ON
THE BALL PROJECT
QPR in the Community
Trust have been allocated a
grant by the William Wates
Memorial Trust to help
support the young families
of people serving prison
sentences.
The Community Trust’s On
the Ball project was set up to
increase resilience, improve
family relationships, improve
self-esteem and help young
people make better choices
about their futures.
The Trust’s youth and
communities manager
Michael Nyarko explained:
“On the Ball is a project we
feel makes a big difference to
young people who are often
feeling isolated because of
their circumstances.
“The stigma behind having
a parent or significant adult
in your life in prison is very
challenging for young people
and often they experience
mental health issues.
“This project mentors them
to think positively about their
future and works with all family
members, including within the
prison, to support the young
person as best as we can and
provide positive pathways for
their future.”
The William Wates Memorial
Trust was established in 1998
to help steer disadvantaged
young people away from
crime and violence and realise
their potential.
Media Voice
IAN MCCULLOUGH, SENIOR WRITER AT WEST LONDON
SPORT, SHARES HIS THOUGHTS…
When I was sat in a freezing
cold press box at Deepdale
the week before Christmas,
I’d have never have imagined
the next time QPR faced
Preston they’d be fighting to
stay in the Championship.
Boosted by a magnificent
early Christmas dinner laid
on by the Preston media
team, Rangers completed a
memorable day with a 1-0
scoreline that flattered the
home side.
The fact there has been just
one further victory since Jimmy
Dunne nodded home Kenneth
Paal’s corner has everyone
connected with QPR – and
many who are not – asking
what the hell has happened?
A huge injury toll, bad luck and
a lack of confidence are the
obvious factors.
However, in racking my
brain to work out how it has
come to this the other day,
something caught my eye in
my office at home.
Now, in media circles, PR
companies are renowned
for being awfully generous
with gimmicks handed out
to journalists to try and keep
them sweet, so to speak.
I have drawers at home full
of commemorative pens,
sponsored phone chargers
(that are never charged when
you need them), wristbands
and even a packet of Yorkshire
Tea that was distributed to
journalists at a Test match I
once covered at Headingley.
So early in the new year, I was
intrigued when a large box
arrived at the house that was
actually addressed to me and
was not the product of yet
another Amazon binge from
my wife.
The weight and the size of
the box was similar to one
that would house a pair of
children’s trainers and gave
the indication of something
really cool inside.
Off came the cardboard and
inside was a bespoke box and
once opened, inside was a
cushioned, velvet interior, the
type I would imagine is usually
found inside a top-of-therange
Rolex watch.
But instead of being greeted
by a glistening timepiece
with the value of the GNP of
a small island nation, there
stood a tiny Subbuteo player
in a QPR 1980s Guinness kit.
A lovely gift, but what else is
in this ample and weighty box
apart from a plastic figure less
than 5cm tall?
Nothing, except the wooden
framing that held it together.
Somewhat underwhelmed,
but not ungrateful, the little
man has since perched
proudly on top of my PC.
But in those four months since
his arrival, there has been
little to cheer for QPR as the
defeats and the misery have
mounted week after week.
So it’s with regret, as Alan
Sugar would say on The
Apprentice, the little man has
been fired – into that very
same drawer that houses
those pens, phone chargers
and wristbands.
Hopefully he can return when
the QPR world is a happier one.
