Ted Hedstrand softball, baseball, soccer, and football fields,
designed for both practice and play for recreational and intercollegiate
use. The field features a state-of-the-art, injuryreducing
artificial turf system, new bleachers, and a press box.
Field lighting enables the complex to be used into the evening
hours, providing more flexibility in programming.
North Park University
Founded in 1891 by the Evangelical Covenant Church, North Park University is located on Chicago’s north side and enrolls more
than 3,000 students from around the country and the world. At North Park excellence implies not only a deep tradition in the
liberal arts and the Christian faith, but also a spirit of innovation, reaching out to serve and to learn from the dynamic community
around us. We are a Christian university, committed to relating faith in Jesus Christ to the aims of higher education. Ours is not
a conformist environment; acceptance of diversity and ecumenism is the spirit of our campus. Our door is open to students who
recognize that education always implies values.
Academic Excellence
Our Mission
The mission of North Park, as an intentionally Christian university
of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is to prepare students
for lives of significance and service through liberal arts,
professional, and theological education.
Our vision, building on our core institutional identity — Christian,
urban, multicultural — is to fashion a university of uncommon
character and enduring excellence where faith and learning
meet.
Student Athletes at North Park
Our philosophy clearly identifies and develops high-caliber
students. We foster an atmosphere of academic excellence
that allows our students the chance to pursue a multitude of
options after graduation.
In the past year, we have had more than 50 Academic All-Conference,
numerous Academic All-Region, and one Academic
All-American who counted themselves proud to be North Park
Viking student athletes.
Leadership through Service
Through both campus and private organizations, on the local
and national level, our student athletes recognize the need to
give back to their community and constituencies.
Our track and field and cross country teams organize the annual
“24-hour Treadmill Relay” in order to raise money for Habitat
for Humanity, offering their services to the organization on
their spring trip.
Members of the Vikings baseball team and the Student Athlete
Advisory Council sponsor “Viking Kids Day”, hosting underprivileged
local youth at our home athletic events, as well as
providing tutoring and mentorship.
The Student Athlete Advisory Council and the CHAMPS/
Lifeskills program nominate Viking athletes for the NCAA National
Leadership Conference.

A History of Success
At North Park University, our past athletic success is considerable.
We choose to honor that tradition actively because we
know the roots of our historical achievements help us continue
to build a vibrant, diverse, and successful offering of NCAA
athletic programs.
Our men’s basketball team has gained national attention by
being crowned NCAA Division III national champions five
times. Only four other NCAA basketball programs in any division
have matched that level of success.
Our baseball program has won four CCIW titles and competed
in five NCAA National Tournaments. They also have several
players holding positions in the NCAA record books for career
and single season statistical accomplishments.
Football, men’s basketball, and baseball have had over 50
players sign professional contracts after their Viking careers.
A Bright Future
Athletic History
Our present accomplishments are just as considerable. Today,
we continue to garner national attention in a number of sports,
and we are poised to continue the winning Viking tradition.
Our men’s soccer team won CCIW titles in 2004, 2005, and
2006, competed in the NCAA National Tournament in 2005
and 2006, and was nationally ranked in 2005 and 2006. They
have had 36 All-CCIW players since 1999.
Our women’s rowing team has earned gold, silver, and bronze
medals in their first three years of competition at the prestigious
Dad Vail Regatta. This feat has been achieved by very
few rowing teams.
Our women’s basketball team has won seven tournament
championships since 2003.
Our women’s soccer team was named the 18th mostimproved
team in the nation by the NCAA in 2005.
Our baseball and women’s basketball teams qualified for the
CCIW Tournament in 2006, allowing them to compete for an
NCAA tournament berth.
Our women’s cross country team had one runner qualify for
the NCAA National Championship in 2006.
2007-2008 Track and Field Preview
The North Park Track and Field teams enter the 2008
season with aspirations of improving their conference standing.
There were several athletes that contributed to the team scores
in 2007, and will be returning to the squad in the coming year.
With the addition of several new faces to the team, there looks
to be a great opportunity to seize the track and run, jump, or
throw for those conference titles.
Men’s Team
Returning at the top of the men’s team is Lucas De Jong, who
will be looking to improve on his sixth-place finish in the discus
throw and shot put throw. Also returning at the top of the
conference and making a run for the title will be Senior Kevin
Adams in the javelin throw. Senior Marcus Simmons will be
looked to as he provides leadership and heart on board the
Vikings’ voyage.
In the throws, several new faces are going to be looked to as
they have the potential to make an immediate impact in the
field. Joe Orsini and Lars Tenglin will be looking to grab some
conference points this coming season. Herbert Obah returns
and is looking to join De Jong on the quest toward the top
of the conference standings.
In the sprints, seniors
Jordan Gyuricza and
Joel Ylagan will be
joined by sprinters from
the football squad with
hopes of being able to
run for the relay titles.
The training and heart of
these speed athletes will
bring some highlights to
North Park University’s
sprint squad.
In the jumps, Ylagan returns
after a year hiatus
to compete for the long
jump title. He will be
joined in this quest by
Marcus Simmons
newcomer Norman Perez,
a former teammate
from Lane Tech H.S. The two will join forces in hopes of taking
the reigns of the CCIW long jump championships.
In the distance, returnee James Williams will be leading the
journey through the packs towards the front of the group.
Freshman runner Chris Roe is going to be a great addition to
the squad that will hopefully carry the team to new heights and
swifter races.
Several other returners and newcomers will be looking to improve
for a chance to compete at the top of the
conference.
Women’s Team
Returning on the women’s team and looking to have an impact
in the conference are sophomore Erika Rees and
Colleen Bielfeldt. Both will be looked to for their leadership as
well as desire to continually perform better than the week before.
Bielfeldt will compete in the hurdles and multi-events, and
Rees will be running for one of the top spots in the 400-meter
dash.
In the sprints, newcomers
will be looked
to as the team fills the
relays and runs for the
titles. With a young
squad and a lot of
enthusiasm, speed is
going to be of the essence
with the additions
of Nicole Cripe
and Jeannetta Johnson.
Also 400-meter
hurdler Amy Perez will
bring a lot of enthusiasm
and hard work to
the sprint squad.
In the jumps, Johnson
and Beilfeldt hope to
make a splash as they Katherine Jemine
land in the sand and
gun for a spot or two at the conference
championships.
In the throws, freshman Katherine Jemine will be looking to use
her strength in the shot put and, with some training, improve to
become a contender in the various throwing events.
In the distance, junior Laura Papageorgiou will lead the group as
the top returning athlete. She will be joined by several 800-meter
runners, including senior Kalina Hartliep who will compete
in the middle distances.
The North Park Track and Field season will be filled with excitement
and unexpected performances, all of which will help
carry the team to the CCIW championships in May. North Park
University will be hosting this year’s CCIW
Outdoor Championships.

Aaron Decker, Head Coach
Coach Profiles
Aaron Decker enters his first year as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach
for North Park University. He served as an assistant for the past season.
During the 2007 track and field season, Coach Decker worked directly with the sprinters
and jumpers. This included the establishment of a school record in the pole vault for
women and an addition to the Top 10 list for the men’s pole vault. Coach Decker has
a wealth of knowledge in developing the total athlete and is an avid student of speed
and acceleration development.
Coach Decker began coaching at Illinois State University, where he was responsible
for the complete development of the pole vault squad. There he coached three female
athletes and one male athlete to top six performances in the NCAA Division I, Missouri
Valley Conference. While working as a graduate assistant he was able to gain great
experience working with the sprints and jumps coaches. He was an integral part in the
summer track and field camp as well as a co-founder of the Redbird Vertical Jumps
Camp. Coach Decker hopes to bring camps and clinics to the newly built facilities on
North Park University’s campus.
Coach Decker is USATF Level II certified in the jumps and received his master’s of
science in exercise science from Illinois State University in May 2006 and his bachelor’s degree from Truman State, where he
competed at the Division II level and trained with a Division II All-American decathlete in all event areas. He is also an adjunct
instructor in Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics at Northeastern Illinois University.
“North Park University has the potential to be a big impact in the CCIW in the near future. I look forward to working with the
great bunch of athletes to help develop their social and athletic careers. An ‘All Conference Athlete,’ in my opinion, is one who will
achieve academic success while also performing on the track or in the field. I build my philosophy of coaching around this pillar.”
