Historical North Walsham 109North WalshamIts origin and place in historyThe Anglo-Saxon village of Walesam is firstrecorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Thederivation of the name itself tells us that itwas a small group of dwellings, Anglo-Saxon:-ham meaning ‘home of’ or ‘homestead’ in OldEnglish.Toponymy reveals various interpretations of thename, the most likely is it relates to a person’sname ‘W(e)alh’ and his or their family home.Norfolk has a high concentration of Anglian orAnglo-Saxon name-endings such as the early-ingham and slightly later -ham and -ton. Theappearance of this name-ending tells us thatthe family probably settled here sometime inthe sixth century AD.There is also a possibility that it could originatefrom the Old English ‘Walh’ meaning Britonor Welshman. This may also be the case withWalcott (Walh’s house or cottage). So it couldpossibly be related to the foundation of asettlement by an older group of the originalBritish or Romano-British population in thearea some of whom would have assimilatedwhile others chose to move west with the influxof Anglians, Saxons and Friesians, settlers fromwhat is now Northern Germany and the lowcountries.Perhaps also consistent with theidea that there may be a Romano-British link, in1844 Roman remains were found on the parishborder with Felmingham; a site close to theline of a Roman Road which connected BurghCastle near Great Yarmouth to the great fort atBrancaster on the northwest Norfolk coast.The third, least likely, but most romantic idea isthat it may possibly relate to the name ‘Waels’or ‘Waelsing’ family who feature in the famedAnglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, written abouta sixth century warrior who slayed Grendel,
