It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 14 th International Symposium on Metallography ME-
TALLOGRAPHY´010, to be held from 28-30 April 2010 in the beautiful surroundings of the High Tatra
Mountains in the Slovak Republic.
We welcome all participants to this traditional event where materials specialists from various parts
of the world have been meeting and exchanging their latest insights at three-yearly intervals since
1969. The original group of narrowly-specialized metallographers who based their research on light
microscopical and macroscopical observation has grown in line with the development of instrument
technology into a community of materials specialists making use of a wide range of increasingly modern
equipment, even though the subject of their research still remains material, and most frequently
metal.
Let us hope and strive to ensure that, just as the use of the wheel has not disappeared from
human civilization despite people’s reaching for distant parts of the universe without rolling motion,
neither should classical metallography disappear as a means of discovering the secrets of the material
world, despite the fact that the most modern instruments in use today are so markedly different
from the original metallographic microscope. Metallography still has something to tell us. This
will surely be confirmed by the “Metallography ’010” symposium.
The Conference Committee wishes to acknowledge the assistance and encouragement that
we have received from many individuals and organizations in the organization of this event.
The Scientific and Organizing Committee wish to create a successful conference in order to
spread professional experience in the wider international community of metallographers and materials
scientists.
We warmly welcome you and wish all of you fruitful inspiring discussions and an enjoyable
stay in the High Tatra Mountains during the 14 th International Conference on Metallography.
The Conference is organized by
leading astronomer Dr. Rušín, this time on the topic “The
Sun and the Marshall Islands”, including slide presentations
of the Tatras landscape, and of an expedition to
the Marshall Islands in 2009 to see the solar eclipse of
the Sun.
A conference tour by bus will be organized according
to participants´ interest to the village of Ždiar, with a guided
tour of the Ždiar House Museum and a re-enactment
of a traditional Slovak wedding with typical folk music
from the local Zamagurie area. Tickets for participants
are available at 10 EUR per person, and tickets must be
purchased in advance at the reception desk on arrival.
The High Tatra Mountains offer many opportunities for
personal walking trips, a visit to the ski centre at Štrbské
Pleso and a visit to Belanská cave. An excursion to the
Institute of Astronomy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
is possible. If weather conditions permit, an excursion
up to Lomnica Peak (2 643 m) by cable car is possible.
The High Tatra Mountains and their surroundings offer
a great variety of opportunities for additional excursions,
for instance to other historical towns such as Kežmarok,
Levoča or Spišská Sobota. The High Tatras are situated
about 100 km north-west of Košice, which is the second-largest
town in Slovakia with interesting historical heritage
as the educational, commercial and cultural centre
of Eastern Slovakia.
All conference participants may visit the vital Water
World in the Kontakt Hotel – tickets are 20 EUR per person
