Meanwhile, Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix
quickly became crowd favourites with
their silky smooth skills and set plays.
As Japanese champions in both 7s and
15s, they too boasted international
experience, including Olympians Nia
Toliver and Yume Okuroda.
With both teams winning their semi-finals
comfortably, the Women’s Final was yet
another tight encounter. After Samurai
took an early lead (7-0), Tokyo Sankyu
Phoenix were suddenly dealt 3 yellow
cards in short succession and inevitably
conceded another try (14-0). With
Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix back up to 10,
the Phoenix fought hard to come within
2 points of snatching victory (14-12),
but Samurai proved to be too good in
the closing stages.
Nia Toliver from Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix
was named Player of the Tournament,
a deserved award given the number of
tries & outstanding pace displayed all
weekend from the American.
