Welcome Dear Parents and Carers I am delighted to welcome you to our school. Starting secondary school is an exceptionally exciting time and we are committed to helping your son/daughter settle quickly and successfully into life at King Edward VI. We have a highly experienced transition team dedicated to ensuring every child is well looked after, both academically and pastorally, from their very first day. We pride ourselves in getting to know every child and treating everyone as an individual with their own unique skills, passions and talents. We strive to be a vibrant learning community nurturing curiosity, creativity, courage and care. We are excited for your child to be joining us and look forward to working with you to help them flourish during their five years at our school. Preparing them to be successful after school into college and beyond will be central to our work so that every child is positive about their future and leaves with confidence and self-belief. This booklet contains a basic overview of our work and expectations. More comprehensive information will be available during the transition process which takes place in the Summer Term. Our <strong>Transition</strong> Days will be on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 July 2024. If, at any point, you have any worry or concerns, no matter how small, please do not hesitate to contact us. As well as being exciting, we recognise that this can be a daunting time for children, and their parents. We understand this but would urge you and your child to enjoy the process. He/she should make a resolution to get involved in as many of the opportunities available here as possible and come to school every day with a positive, polite and inquisitive mindset. We find that nerves quickly settle, new surroundings soon become familiar, and lasting friendships are forged in the first few weeks and months of students’ lives at King Edward VI School. Everyone here is committed to making your child’s first year of secondary school wonderful and we look forward to sharing in their successes. A strong partnership with parents is critical to the success of any child’s education, and as adults working together, we look forward to providing the structure, discipline, care and support needed for your child to thrive. It is essential that you support the behaviour policy of the school and share our vision for the highest standards of student behaviour at all times. It is also important to read our weekly newsletters and Go4Schools app so that you are fully up-to-date with all aspects of school life, and your child’s progress. Attendance _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ What time must my child arrive at school? Students should arrive in school by 8.50am and be in their tutor rooms by 8.55am. What happens if my child is late? Registration finishes at 9.15am in the morning • If your child arrives after 9am he/she will be marked late • If your child arrives after 9.15am he/she will be marked absent Students who arrive after registration should report to Reception via the Grove Road Entrance, where they must sign in and give a reason for their lateness. How do I report my child’s absence? You must contact us before 9am every day that you child is absent. You can do so by emailing (attendance@king-ed.suffolk.sch.uk) or by leaving a telephone message (01284 761393, option 1). Will the school contact me if my child is absent? The school has an automatic ‘Truancy Call’ system. This means that parents will be contacted by telephone, email or text when their child is absent, if no explanation for the absence has been received. If we are concerned about aspects of your child’s attendance or punctuality we will contact you to discuss the best way forward. Every child’s attendance is monitored fortnightly by Tutors, your child’s Head of Year and the Attendance Officer. It is very important to keep your child’s attendance above 96%. Children whose attendance falls below 92% will be discussed with our Educational Welfare Officer. What can I do to encourage my child to attend school? Make sure your child gets enough sleep and is up in plenty of time each morning. Ensure that he/she leaves home in full school uniform and properly equipped. Show you value his/her education by showing interest. Your child will bring home a school organiser each evening. Keep an eye on your child’s attendance by recording it in the planner each day. Discuss the importance of attendance with them and encourage them to attend school even on days when they may feel under the weather. Contact your child’s Tutor to discuss the support that can be offered, if you think your child is struggling with school. Don’t leave it! My child is trying to avoid coming to school. What should I do? Contact your child’s Tutor or Head of Year to discuss your worries. Your child could be avoiding school for a number of reasons – difficulties with school work, bullying, friendship problems or family difficulties. It is important that we identify the reason for your child’s reluctance to attend school and work together to tackle the problem. The pastoral team will be able to help and advise you. Holidays and Leave of Absence – points to consider: • Term-time absence is a significant factor in children’s under-achievement • Children have approximately 12 weeks a year of school holidays – please use this time to take them on holidays • Children who find English or Maths difficult often find it even harder to catch up on work missed. 5
