Pottery Workshop in Rome
for Beginners
One of the many Italian excellences is the art of
ceramics, known and exported all over the world.
Although this art is not central to Rome, as it is to
other cities in Tuscany or Emilia Romagna for example,
the Italian capital is certainly not lacking in artists,
craftsmen, handmade products, attention to detail and
creativity. This workshop offers the opportunity to learn
the fine art of pottery directly from local master potters
in the beautiful Monteverde area. Get your hands dirty
with clay, learn how to use the wheel and make whatever you like to take home your own
‘made in Italy’ pieces with you.
steps completely deserted. Enjoy a cappuccino and
an Italian croissant while the dome of the Vatican is
highlighted by the rising sun. Pictures will be amazing
with first the moon and then the sun coming up.
There are so many things to do in Rome that sometimes it gets
Visit the Vatican by Night
Visiting the Vatican is an obvious must on the list, but
the crowds, fast-pace, and vendors during the day
might hamper the beauty that Vatican City has to offer.
That’s why we suggest seeing The Vatican lit up by
night, for a truly unique experience. Not only is the
Vatican magnificent to see under the stars, but going
at night ensures fewer crowds for a more personal
feel. Interested in an exclusive night time tour? Check
Thrift shop in Monti
Brooklyn is to New York as Monti is to Rome. Monti,
just around the corner from the Colosseum, is one of
the hippest quarters in Rome, with its cool bars, vegan
restaurants, and local designers. What is truly the star
of the show in Monti is its amazing thrift shopping.
There are a multitude of different thrift stores in Monti
that have one of a kind pieces, and the stores are a
bunch of fun to sift through.
Visit Villa Medici
09 10
Villa Medici is an elaborate villa at the
edge of Rome’s Borghese Gardens. The
villa was once owned by the infamous
Medici family, but now it is owned by
the French state and acts as the French
Academy of Rome. With its enviable
position overlooking the entire city,
exquisite 18 acres of gardens filled with
fountains and sculptures, acclaimed
artists in residence and sophistication
and cultural heritage owing to its twothousand-year
history – is truly a Roman
experience you will not forget.
Grab a drink with a
view in one of Rome’s
rooftops
There is something about a Roman night
that is sensual and inviting. Take advantage
of this unique essence by grabbing a
refreshing cocktail at one of Rome’s many
rooftop bars. Sample expert mixology with
a view of the city by moonlight — it’ll be an
unforgettable experience, I promise.
The Ultimate Guide to Testaccio
Neighbourhood in Rome
The Testaccio district of Rome, although
not as well-known as other riverside
neighbourhoods such as Trastevere or
the Jewish Ghetto, is an area not to
be excluded from one’s itineraries. The
area, an old port where all the food
used to be funnelled into the city, is built
around Monte dei Cocci, a huge mound
of discarded ancient Roman amphorae
where the imported food was kept.
Testaccio is a Roman quarter at heart,
rich in history, culinary experiences to
be had - the area is now considered
one of the bastions of excellence of
Roman cuisine - and fantastic places to
visit. Some of these are: the Pyramid of
Cestius, a Roman-era Pyramid, the noncatholic
cemetery, hosting philosophers
and poets that have marked western
literally culture eternally, the former
slaughterhouse, il Mattatoio, now a
contemporary and modern art museum,
the Villaggio Globale, a cultural centre
home to an artisan and independent
designer community and much more.
For the foodies among you, the local
food market is unmissable, as well as
some of the restaurants and bars in
the area, some of which are the best in
town!
We have put together this article to
guide you through your food, drink, and
sightseeing options.
FOCUS ON TESTACCIO
PERILLI
Via Marmorata, 39
Tue - Sat 12.15pm-3pm; 7.15pm-11.15pm; Sun
12.15pm-3.30pm
facebook.com/perilliatestaccio
Perilli has been around since the early 1900s and
is a Roman institution. Simple, elegant, quiet and
unpretentious is how this restaurant can be best
described. The classic Roman primi: carbonara,
amatriciana and gricia, as well as typical secondi:
abbacchio al forno and coda alla vaccinara are
always prepared with the care and attention that
distinguishes Perilli.
DA FELICE
Via Mastro Giorgio, 29
Open daily 12.30pm-3.30pm, 7.30pm-11.30pm
feliceatestaccio.it
Every dish ordered from Da Felice’s menu is like
a love story. Every bite augments your feelings
towards that recipe, just like loving a person more
and more each day. Let your gustatory perception
interpret the same experience as kissing someone
for the first time after wanting to do it for so long.
Once you have that last forkful of creamy tonnarelli
cacio e pepe, nothing can be compared to it
PIATTO ROMANO
Via Giovanni Battista Bodoni, 62
Open daily (except Sundays) 12.45am-3pm;
7.45-11.30pm
piattoromano.com
At Piatto Romano we get to the ultimate level of
Roman cuisine. Although not much of a location, the
cuisine is extraordinary and veraciously Roman with
excellent raw materials perfectly paired in mouthwatering
dishes. The wild herbs, the mallow, the
cacio e pepe peppered on the spot at the table in
front of the customer...the ricotta and visciole cake,
maybe one of the best in Rome and the artichokes...
insane!
IL GROTTINO
Via Marmorata, 165
Open daily (except Tue) 6.30-12.30am
ilgrottinoatestaccio.it
Il Grottino is a cosy and spartan little pizzeria. On the
menu, excellent roman fritti (fried foods) and pizzas
(thin crust, as per the Roman tradition) – made with
typically roman ingredients and roman philosophy
as the artichokes and Roman pecorino cream pizza
testifies. There is in general an abundance of goodquality
ingredients at this place.
OSTERIA FRATELLI MORI
Via dei Conciatori, 10
Open daily 12.30pm-2.30pm; 7.30pm-11.30pm
osteriafratellimori.it
Inspired by traditional Roman cuisine, Osteria
Fratelli Mori embraces passion and tradition by
cherry picking most of the ingredients from the
respectful Testaccio market. Recipes handed down
have been travelling hand in hand to create dishes
like spaghetti alla carbonara, tonnarelli cacio e pepe
and trippa alla romana, all customized and signed
by the family’s cooks.
FLAVIO AL VELAVEVODETTO
Via di Monte Testaccio, 47
Daily 12.30am-3.30pm; 8-11pm
ristorantevelavevodetto.it
This popular osteria is carved inside the
neighbourhood’s manmade mound of ancient
amphoras. Just as spectacular as its location is
Flavio’s authentic, no-frills Roman cuisine: try their
tonnarelli cacio e pepe, coda alla vaccinara (oxtail
stew), polpette di bollito (fried meatballs), and
award-winning rigatoni alla carbonara.
PECORINO
Via Galvani, 64
Open daily 12am-11pm
ristorantepecorino.it
This trattoria in Testaccio is very quaint, with
courteous, fast service and excellent classic dishes:
great amatriciana, fried artichokes, abbacchio
scottadito and chicory, or involtini for a jollier dish.
The restaurant is on three levels, and the small
room on the ground floor is small and cosy.
MERCATO TESTACCIO
Via Aldo Manuzio, 66b
Mon-Sat 7am–3.30pm
mercatoditestaccio.it
Try fresh produce at this local food market. Hop
from box to box, eating standing up and at the bar
counters, or get food from different stalls and sit at
the central seating area. Especially recommended
at the market are Mordi & Vai, Mani in Pasta and Da
Corrado. Mercato Testaccio is the perfect place for
a lazy foodie day out with the locals.
Piazza dell’Emporio, 1/2
Open daily 6pm-2am
Vinificio is a new really cool and really good place
in Testaccio. It is large, comfy, classy… they have
a wide and careful selection of local and foreign,
natural, wines and succulent snacks and more
elaborate dishes to pair them with. Definitely worth
a try for aperitivo or even dinner!
TRAM DEPOT
Via Marmorata, 13
Sun,Wed,Thu 8am-12pm; Fri-Sat 8-2am
facebook.com/TramDepotOfficial/
With Tram Depot you’ll experience the memorable
tram ride that transports people not with four
wheels but with countless drinks. Enjoy the
Testaccio neighbourhood by sitting on the garden’s
retro chairs and sipping tropical cocktails or fresh
beers. Just pop by after dinner or after a long walk
around the Eternal City.
VIA DI MONTE TESTACCIO
Testaccio has different options for nightlife: several hot spots are carved out of the ancient hill of Monte dei
Cocci or there are other options one after the other on Via di Monte testaccio, which makes it easy to go
from one club to another.
If you want to dance, try Shake (Via di Monte Testaccio, 35), Caffe Latino (Via di Monte Testaccio, 96) for
south american vibes and Caruso Cafe (Via di Monte Testaccio, 36), known for its late-night salsa and
merengue. Most clubs open at 11pm and many are closed on Sundays. Check their websites for details!
OASI DELLA BIRRA
Piazza Testaccio, 38/41
Mon-Sat 8.30am-12am, Sun 6pm-12am
facebook.com/EnotecaPalombi1917/
During the day this family-run store operates as a
delicatessen and restaurant, but from 4:30pm on it
transforms into a chill, laid-back spot for drinks. An
impressive selection of wines is available, but Oasis
della Birra (Beer Oasis) specializes in, you guessed
it, beer. Italian and international brands (including
six pages dedicated to Belgian names) as well as
around a dozen on tap options make ordering here
a delightfully dizzying task.
CH1887
Via di Monte Testaccio, 30
Wed-Sun 12.30pm-3pm, 7.30pm – 12am
facebook.com/ch1887
Simone Mina’s concept was to create an imaginary
museum of liquids in this hidden space located on
the second floor of Checchino dal 1887, a restaurant
that has been around for 130+ years. Taking
inspiration from his family and the surrounding
neighborhood of Testaccio, Ch1887 combines food
and cocktail culture, by experimenting with flavors
and ingredients that can be found in traditional
Roman dishes.
PHOTO EXHIBITION IN TESTACCIO
9-11 May
Viavai, Via Galilleo Ferraris 15
urban_photo_hunts
The cultural association Urban Photo Hunts, which has
been organizing workshops, photo walks and exhibitions
in Rome since 2017, will showcase the work of its
photographers in a large exhibition all focused on the
Testaccio neighborhood, exploring its aspects of daily
life, architectural and urban planning and philosophical-literary elements.
The exhibition will take place on the second weekend of June, between the 9th and 11th, at the new and
very active cultural space Viavai, a creative studio, meeting place, showroom and pop-up store in the
NON-CATHOLIC CEMETERY
Via Caio Cestio, 6
In Testaccio there is a beautiful cemetery, a place
of quiet and peace that gently pulls you away from
the city traffic. The cemetery is surrounded by
greenery, full of stories, poets, philosophers from
all over the world who by chance in the course of
their lives found themselves in Rome. Among the
most famous names are the poets John Keats, and
Shelley, and also the great Italian philosopher and
politician, Antonio Gramsci.
VILLAGGIO GLOBALE
Lungotevere Testaccio, 1
facebook.com/villaggiooooglobale/
The Villaggio Globale is a bastion of underground
culture for those who grew up in Rome, a former
music venue, a cultural and social centre and
a place of creativity and community - where
independent artisans and designers from all over
the world, often following migratory flows, produce
and display their art. A place definitely off the
beaten path, interesting, and well worth a visit.
MATTATOIO (FORMER MACRO)
Piazza Orazio Giustiniani, 4
mattatoioroma.it
For more culture, visit Rome’s former
slaughterhouse, il Mattatoio, originally a complex of
pavilions used for the slaughter and distribution of
meat destined for the capital, and today restored
into a majestic architectural piece and used for the
exhibition of contemporary art, featuring shows and
events all year round.
CITTÀ DELL’ALTRA ECONOMIA
Largo Dino Frisullo
cittadellaltraeconomia.org
The Città dell’Altra Economia is a mini-city of
art, a place of anti-commercial culture within the
evocative spaces of the former slaughterhouse
(mattatoio). Its goal is to create solidarity among
people with a common interest in low environmental
impact. The complex covers 3,500 square metres
where organic farming and fair trade markets
are held; training workshops; and also concerts,
festivals and parties.
PYRAMID OF CESTIUS
Via Raffaele Persichetti
The Pyramid Cestia is a Roman tomb in the shape
of an Egyptian-style pyramid built in Rome between
18 and 12 BC. It is located in the immediate vicinity
of Porta San Paolo and is incorporated in the
perimeter of the non-Catholic cemetery. The tomb
cannot be visited at the moment, but if you are in
the area it is worth a look, even if only from the
outside.
TEATRO VITTORIA
Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice, 10
teatrovittoria.it
The Teatro Vittoria is part of the cultural heart
of the neighbourhood. Active for more than
a century, it continues to entertain residents
and passers-by in the neighbourhood with
sophisticated shows. “Laughter with class” say the
reviewers, “professionalism of the highest order”,
“programmes that are never banal and intelligent”...
and what a joy it is to go to the theatre!
Eating out of town
beautiful locations outside of Rome
Start your engines, recharge your cars, and download a nice playlist on Spotify: today we
are eating outside of Rome. It only takes a 40-to-90-minute drive to get into beautiful natural
landscapes, with a lot of greenery and animals, sandy beaches and iodine-rich wind. From the
Castelli to the Agro Pontino via the coastline, you are spoiled for choice on the maps for spending
a Sunday out of town, both in terms of destinations and in terms of dining: the surroundings of
Rome indeed offer dozens and dozens of incredible restaurants, pizzerias and bakeries.
Here are our 10 favourites.
EATING OUT OF TOWN: BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS OUTSIDE OF ROME
Li Somari
Trattoria Fuori Porta
Via Ponte Gregoriano, 1 - Tivoli
0774.282499
An old stable that housed donkeys in the
historic centre of Tivoli is the new bet of
Andrea La Caita, former partner and founder
of, among others, Rome’s new two-star
Michelin Acquolina at The First Roma Arte
Hotel. He has involved his friend Adriano
Baldassare in running the kitchens of Li
Somari, much more than an out-of-town
trattoria. Here, in fact, Baldassare explores
a cuisine rooted in the territory. Li Somari’s
menu changes frequently according to what
the market offers. On the menu you will
find traditional dishes reinterpreted with a
contemporary twist.
Portale 21
Opificio di Cucina
Via Rodolfo Morandi, 32 - Marino
Tel. 0694837668
In Marino, Valentina Pacifici wins over locals
with young, pop cuisine. At her Portale 21,
in a large, bright space that spans over
the indoors and outdoors, you can enjoy
tapas with an Italian flair. The beef crudo is
insane, along with the vignarola, pecorino
and crispy artichokes, as well as the veal,
sweetbread with butter, agretti and garlic
and the amazing Apulian focaccina made by
Valentina enriched with pistachio mortadella,
Roman-style artichoke and smoked
scamorza. But don’t stop at tapas: keep
ordering first courses such as home-made
tagliolini with black pork lard, chestnuts and
peat. Also excellent are the desserts, all
strictly homemade such as Tartisù, as well as
cocktails and wines.
In the heart of Nettuno, in a beautiful and
romantic little square, you can eat some
of the most exciting cuisine in all of Lazio.
We are at Taverna di Bacco, the beloved
spot of the Villani family, which opened this
small-scale eatery in 2015. In an elegant
setting amid glass, wood and marble, we eat
refined, contemporary dishes signed by Italian-Brazilian chef Felipe Augusto Dos Santos, who
contaminates local recipes and ingredients with spices and techniques with an international
flair. A few examples? Carpaccio of catch of the day, oyster madness, olives and cherry
tomatoes and Spaghettone butter, anchovies and puntarelle. The wine list is also particularly
extensive and carefully curated.
Viale dei Castani, 17 - Ariccia
06.45557597
Sintesi is the new starred sign of the Lazio
countryside. Since the day they opened, just
before the pandemic broke out Sara Scarsella
and Matteo Compagnucci in the kitchen, along
with Sara’s sister Laura in the dining room,
have breathed new life into Ariccia, redefining
it as a gastronomic destination. The restaurant,
with its minimal design made of wood and greenery, offers young cuisine, the result of its
owners’ experiences around the world from Australia to Denmark. The menu offers the
possibility to range over both the dishes on the list and the 7- or 9-course tasting.
DLR (Dopo Lavoro Ricreativo)
Via Nino Bixio, 1 - Frascati
06.630640
DLR, Dopo Lavoro Ricreativo, is the brainchild
of chef Jacopo Ricci, who leaves the city and
fine dining to return to his home area, the
Castelli. Here, in an atmosphere reminiscent
of the trattorias of the 1970s, simple and
informal, Jacopo revels in cuisine that is only
seemingly simple. Every dish on the menu is
created from raw materials that are in season
and strictly from the territory of Lazio and
in particular the Castelli. To try are the beef
heart with cherries, the pork stuffed dim with
spring onion and lemon balm, and again the
duck with jackdaws and blackberry leaves.
Contatto
Via Gioberti, 11 - Frascati
06.21700957
Frascati recently sees itself enriched by a
sparkling new opening. Its name is Contatto,
a new contemporary-style restaurant by the
couple Luca Lodovici and Lorena Cavana.
Luca, after working several years in important
Italian and foreign kitchens, returns to
Frascati with the project of a restaurant
where he cooks local raw materials with
cutting-edge techniques. Don’t miss the
carboncello di grotta, egg and beer, the
cappellacci with porchetta and brown bottom
of peppers, and again the black pork belly
from the Lepini Mountains with roots and
plum ketchup. It is possible to opt for two
tasting menus of 5 and 7 courses.
EATING OUT OF TOWN: BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS OUTSIDE OF ROME
Tonka
Nando in Pizzeria
Via Roma, 4/6 - Grottaferrata
06.9459989
In Grottaferrata, from the ashes of Peppa and
Nando’s, two establishments were born: Peppa
Dolceria, for brunch and breakfast, and Nando
in Pizzeria, for dinner. And it is at Nando in
Pizzeria that you can taste the Roman pizza
of pizzaiolo Mirko Rizzo, beloved in Rome with
L’Elementare in Trastevere and Parco Appio.
Don’t forget to order the fritti and bruschette before devouring the pizzas, from traditional and
non-traditional toppings. In the warmer months we recommend taking a seat in the small
outdoor garden.
Ugo Foscolo Street, 15 - Aprilia
348.6960986
For a cool stop out of town, what’s better
than ice cream? And the best, in our opinion,
is Tonka’s in Aprilia. Here, Valerio Esposito,
opened his gelateria in 2010 that now boasts
two cones for the Gambero Rosso guide. The
flavors are diverse and constantly changing.
They are also joined by ice cream cakes, monoportions and granitas.
Hosteria Amedeo
Via Monte Compatri, 31 - Monte Porzio Catone
06.94341163
In Monte Porzio Catone, from what
used to be a small fraschetta, carefully
tended by grandfather Amedeo, Hosteria
Amedeo restaurant emerges and surprises
with its excellent blend of tradition and
contemporaneity with traditional dishes
revised from a current perspective, lightened
and better presented. Try the house-selected
cured meats and even the fried artichokes
and pork livers. Continue with the homemade
fresh pasta in multiple variations, from porcini
mushrooms to pork chop ragout. The grilled
meats and homemade desserts are excellent
too.
Buccia trattoria
Via Litoranea - Sabaudia
366.4990849
In Sabaudia we eat very good meat and
especially quinto quarto. Who gets the credit
for it all? Buccia Trattoria, owned by Fabrizio
Pagliaroni and Daniele Iodice, who, after
running a kiosk on the beach, decided to
dedicate their place on the shoreline to meat.
Lots of buffalo is cooked here, though the
real must-have is the homemade porchetta.
Bite into their bao stuffed with Buccia Made
porchetta, wild misticanza, sweet and sour
sauce and ginger mayonnaise, follow it up
with noodles whipped in a cream of grilled
onions and buffalo sausage, wash it all down
with a good bottle of wine and you’ll be
happy. In fact, overjoyed.
Picnic Season
in Rome
When in Rome,
picnic as the Romans do!
p
Gabriela R. Proietti
As we head into the month
of May, what better way to
enjoy the spring sunshine,
immerse ourselves in
Rome’s abundant greenery
under her blue skies, and
escape the hustle and bustle
of every-day city life than to
have a picnic? Picnic season
in Rome is not to be messed
with, as villas across town
quickly fill-up at the first
sight of a sunny day. Where
to venture to and what to
bring is only a matter of
picking one out of the many
beautiful parks that stretch
across the city, making a
few pit-stops, and grabbing
a group of family or friends
to enjoy it with. .
WHEN IN ROME, PICNIC AS THE ROMANS DO!
Picking the right spot
Unrolling a blanket and finding a spot to claim shouldn’t pose a challenge as Rome
is one of the greenest cities in all of Europe. Although the debate amongst Romans
is strong as to which villa is best, and there is no sign of resolution anytime soon,
you simply cannot go wrong with either. Villa Doria Pamphili, a 17th-century villa
situated just beyond Trastevere, in the Gianicolo Hill in Monteverde, is the largest
landscaped public park in Rome, with over 90 hectares of public space, in addition
to its 17th century architecture, fountains and ponds. On the other hand, Villa
Borghese, Rome’s most famous park, spans from Piazza del Popolo to Via Veneto,
and can be reached at the top of the Spanish Steps. The Gardens of Borghese are
a sanctuary, and even have fun things to do after lunch, like rent row boats, head
to the museum, or explore the Bioparco Zoo.
WHEN IN ROME, PICNIC AS THE ROMANS DO!
Just beyond the Borghese
Gardens is Rome’s
second largest public
park, Villa Ada, situated
in the North-east area of the city. Villa
Ada manages to create a tranquil vibe
with its luscious landscape rich in flora
despite lying in a high-density urban
area. If you’re looking for an adventure
that’s even further from the city center,
Parco degli Acquedotti is undoubtedly
well worth the trip (easily accessible by
Metro A to the Giulio Agricola stop). The
open-air, flat terrain that stretches for
what seems like eternity is lined with
crumbling ancient aqueducts that are
absolutely breathtaking. The park is the
perfect spot to feel as if you have been
transported to the countryside, without
actually leaving the City. A herd of
sheep may even be spotted in passing.
Something new and exciting that
has just launched this past month
is at Orto Botanico di Roma, also
known as the Botanical Garden.
The garden’s latest project, called
YAM, offers the chance to enjoy
on weekends a curated picnic
with seasonal ingredients. Enjoy
the picnic immersed in nature
under the shade surrounded by
the scent of lemon trees to enjoy
a one-of-a-kind experience.
Other spots we love that are
tucked away in the city’s tiny
corners include Villa Sciarra,
Parco del Colle Oppio, and Villa
Torlonia.
What are you waiting for? Grab a friend or two, some
food and drinks, and pick a park to go picnic!
Daily from 21 April
Entry fee: €5-7
Like every year, on April
21st, on the occasion
of Rome’s birthday, the
stunning Garden of Roses
will reopen. And this year, it’s
not just Rome’s birthday, it’s
also Easter!
Just a short walk from the
Colosseum, you can find an
exquisite rose garden with
over 1,100 different species
of roses, with a spectacular
view overlooking the ruins of
the Palatine Hill and the city
of Rome.
And the garden isn’t just
beautiful, it’s also one of the
most prestigious collections
The Garden of Roses
in the world, which retraces
the history and evolution of
the rose from the ancient
Romans to today. There are
roses from New Zealand,
Europe, the Americas and
South Africa, just to name
a few. Some are 40 million
years old.
The Garden was first set up
in the year 1931 according
to the wish of the nobleman
Francesco Boncompagni
Ludovisi, on top of a former
Jewish cemetery. To
commemorate the former
site the garden still bears
the two tables of the laws
of Moses at its entrance
and was given the shape of
a menorah with its seven
arms.
The garden is split into
three sections, showcasing
ancient, botanical and
modern roses. It is both
centrally located yet also
a tranquil, romantic spot
to escape the chaos of the
city. Definitely worth a visit
for lovers of roses, lovers
of a great panorama or just
lovers in general!
ilmarcheseroma
Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: the elegance of
a French bar with salon accents and intricate chandeliers
within the coziness of a Roman trattoria. Dine directly at
the kitchen counter or in one of the wooden tables while
enjoying Chef’s Roman dishes and homemade pasta.
What to order? With Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure
to have a fantastic dining experience. Authentic cuisine
that has never heard of a ‘half-portion’, delicious meat
and seafood specialities, and main courses marinated in
distilled and bitter bases is what awaits you.
As a starter we suggest the fried green tomato with
buffalo mozzarella and basil mayonnaise. So yummy!
For mains you can try the Linguine con ricciola, pesto
di rucola e limone candito or always stick with the well
loved classic, the iconic La carbonara del Marchese. The
guanciale is crispy, the pasta is homemade and al dente,
and the sauce perfectly creamy. Then try the galletto alla diavola or the Roman-style veal fillet
topped with prosciutto and sage. If you fancy fish, the Tonno rosso alla cacciatora or the sweet
and sour cod fish served with raspberries and vegetables in season.
Il Marchese is a delightful place that is not only culinary heaven but quenches your thirst. It
doubles as a lovely cocktail bar, and the first Amaro Bar of Europe - its menu has more than
six hundred kinds of bitters. Either post dinner, or as an aperitivo, enjoy one of their signature
drinks, all a blend of carefully selected fine ingredients with various textures and extraordinary
compositions of aromas and tastes - each of them unique, each worth every sip.
Les Etoiles Rooftop Cocktail Bar is the open rooftop terrace
of the Hotel Atlante Star that offers a truly spectacular
panoramic view of Rome encompassing three hundred and
sixty degrees of terracotta rooftops and some of the city’s
most impressive monuments. If you’re looking for a light
lunch or a dinner, an aperitivo or an after dinner cocktail, you
couldn’t find a location more romantic or luxurious.
The view takes in Castel Sant’Angelo, the Vittorio Emanuele
monument, the forested Gianicolo hill, Villa Borghese, the
spidery gazometro, and the best view I’ve ever seen of the
facade and dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Relax on couches or under their spacious umbrellas and
enjoy a cocktail alongside an array of delectable finger
foods. Choose from a variety of cooked and raw food,
marinated salmon, yummy club sandwiches, buffalo
mozzarella, hamburgers, rich salads and more, all finished
off with fresh fruit.
The aperitif is served every day between 5pm and 9pm. There is a fixed formula at 45 euros
which includes a drink (cocktail or glass of wine) accompanied by a selection of finger food,
also available for vegans and celiacs.
I suggest going in the evening so you can enjoy the cool breeze above the tumult of the city
below, sip a cocktail and watch the sun’s last rays warm the ancient stones of the eternal city.
Just a few streets away from the Ottaviano metro in
Via Ostia sits Rome’s oldest jazz club, Alexanderplatz,
a down to earth venue which wouldn’t be out of place
in the mecca of Jazz: Greenwich Village, New York.
Alexanderplatz is underground, figuratively as a haven to
an underground musical genre which has thrived here
over the last thirty years, and literally. As you descend
the stairs into the cavernous interior, you’d be forgiven
for forgetting you were near the Vatican in the heart
of Rome. Describing itself as a “cradle of jazz,” the graffitied walls and photos of legendary
performers imbue Alexanderplatz with a feeling of experimentalism which defined jazz in its
heyday.
Many of the most prominent jazz, blues, soul, music artists have performed at the
Alexanderplatz, including Wynton Marsalis, Brad Meldhau, Red Rodney, Freddy Cole, Stefano
Bollani, Fabrizio Bosso, Sarah Jane Morris, Steve Coleman and many more. Founded in 1984
by Giampiero Rubei, Alexanderplatz hosts live concerts from 9.30pm (doors open at 8pm).
This synthesis between the experimental and sophisticated is what makes Alexanderplatz
unique. Where else are you going to sip a cocktail and watch great live jazz in Rome? Entry is
through membership. The program changes regularly, so to keep up to date with upcoming
performances, it’s a good idea to check out their Facebook Page.
Charity Cafe, with its fully
stocked bar specializing
in whiskey, rum and killer
shaken concoctions, is the
jazz and blues aficionado’s
dream. It’s gritty New York
and Roman elegance fused
together with music nights
oozing from Chicago blues to
jazz Harlem standards. 60s
and 70s Classic Rock, Soul
and Folk every Tuesday with
Andy’s Corner; Blues Night
on Wednesday; Jazz Voice
on Thursday; Jazz Night on
Friday, and a groovy Blues
Night on Saturday, all starting
at 10 pm! On Sunday there
is live music with an aperitivo
(6.30pm – 9pm) with snacks,
appetizers and drinks
included in your price.
Vintage finds, bohemian
Roman style décor, a library
of books and pop culture
references will certainly
appeal to your senses. Odes
to Fellini, Bukowski and
even Star Wars, are carefully
placed throughout while
showcasing their grace.
For entrées one might get
prosciutto and hummus, go
for a sandwich, their special
tartares, or an especially
gracious list of salads. The
highlight? Bukowski Bar
offers twelve different kinds
of spritz! And wine lovers,
go for the good stuff with
Bukowski’s wine selection of
Italy’s tastiest.
The Conventicola is a
Burlesque Club, a space
that allows for the strongest
underground artists to take
the stage and perform
their art. Hosting about
a dozen, vastly different
artists each night, along with
the occasional burlesque
performance, this venue is
like nowhere else in Rome.
At Conventicola you’ll get the
change to listen to the best
swing musicians of today’s
scene, admire burlesque
performances from every
corner of the world, and
attend exhibitions of unique
and histrionic personalities.
OPEN HOUSE
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
May 20-28
Various Locations
www.openhouseroma.org
From May 20 to 28, Rome is giving people
the chance to explore the great architecture
and design of contemporary structures,
historic buildings and even private homes
throughout the city. Thanks to Open House
Roma, more than 200 sites will open their
doors to visitors and tourists alike. The novelty
of this 11th edition is the length: nine days
and two weekends of visits, events and tours.
The events are divided into six categories
revolving around: living, everyday architecture,
bed and food, history, creative heritage,
and finally, knowledge. Highlights in the six
proposed areas include: Palazzo Falconieri on
Via Giulia, home to the Hungarian Academy
and one of Borromini’s lesser-known works
of art; a stroll through Villa Certosa, a small
“village” squeezed between the railway and
the rest of the city, with an old-time, almost
surreal atmosphere; a futuristic visit to the
Italian space agency; and much much more.
Stay tuned by visiting the event’s website.
the first international exhibitions to raise questions about the technological/existential concept
of the Metaverse – said Gabriele Simongini and Serena Tabacchi. Palazzo Cipolla, previously
hosting the colourful collection of the French painter Dufy, becomes a set, a sort of creative
playground where the concept of digital imagination becomes the true protagonist.
The exhibition brings together works by leading historical artists such as Umberto Boccioni,
“
The Metaverse is a place where you can do anything,
be anyone without going anywhere at all. A place
where the limits of reality are your imagination.
ancient ruins and imposing
visitors get to experience the
current and past artists, from
the Baroque to the present
time.
Ipotesi Metaverso is one of
Giacomo Balla, Giorgio de Chirico, Maurits
HOW TO SEE FLORENCE IN A DAY
FLORENCE
8.30 am
Breakfast
You can’t start any day without a warm cup of coffee and luckily
there are coffee shops on almost every other corner in Florence.
A cup of joe and a cornetto (croissant) is all you’ll need to fuel
your body to embark on a day full of adventures. Ditta Artigianale
and Caffé Gilli are two great options. Ditta Artigianale is one of
our favorites with a variety of savory breakfast options, but if you
prefer a warm sweet pastry head to Caffé Gilli, you will not be
disappointed.
How To See Florence In A Day
The perfect itinerary to maximize 24 hours in Florence
Florence is the birthplace of Renaissance art, but more
importantly this cozy, walkable city with rich history offers
a cultural experience unlike no other. The city’s vibrant and
joyful ambiance, and the Florentine cuisine and wine will
have you coming back for more. Florence deserves much
more than 24 hours, but if you find yourself with only one
day to indulge, we’ve got you covered.
9.15 am
Piazza Duomo
After breakfast head over to The Cathedral
of Santa Maria del Fiore in Piazza Duomo.
The Dome is the largest masonry vault in
the world and dates back to 1436, built by
Filippo Brunelleschi. It’s one of Florence’s
most spectacular sights and the coolest part
is you can climb all the way to the top of the
dome and look out onto all of Florence. We
recommend purchasing tickets in advance.
11 am
Mercato Centrale
After 463 steps, your stomach may be
rumbling. Head over to the Mercato Centrale,
also known as the Central Market, for a
marketplace full of taste for anything your
heart desires. The ground floor is a traditional
food market with fresh meats, cheese, and
vegetables. The upstairs resembles a food
court, with various cuisines, pastries, beer,
and cocktails cultivated by artisans.
Steps outside of the Mercato Centrale, you’ll notice the sweet scent of real leather leading to
the tents with all the best goods. This is the famous Leather Market in San Lorenzo. The leather
market offers endless options from belts to bags and everything in between. If you’re looking for
a gift for a friend or for yourself, this is the place to go.
Quick Lunch
HOW TO SEE FLORENCE IN A DAY
After an hour or two of admiring artworks, it’s time to grab a
quick lunch. When in Florence, everyone must try one of the best
sandwich shops, All’Antico Vinaio. The first ever location is only a
few steps away from the Uffizi and now the company has expanded
to multiple parts of Italy and even in the United States. Don’t be
discouraged by the long lines, the taste and variety of options will
definitely be worth the wait!
Piazza della Signoria
After some shopping head over to Piazza Della
Signoria. This city square is a huge tourist
attraction and here you’ll find the Palazzo
Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery. As you walk
around you’ll notice the Fountain of Neptune,
a replica of the iconic David, and many more
popular attractions. It’s a great place to sit and
soak in Florence’s beauty.
1.30 pm
Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi Gallery is a must as it hosts the
largest collection of Renaissance art in the
world. Some timeless paintings preserved here
include pieces such as Botticelli’s The Birth of
Venus (1485), and Michelangelo’s painting of
The Holy Family (1504-06). The Uffizi gallery is
packed with history and incredible art, but to
maximize the quality of your visit book a tour.
Ponte Vecchio
Unfortunately, All’Antico Vinaio doesn’t have
seating, but what a great opportunity to grab
your sandwich and hangout at the oldest
bridge in Florence: The Ponte Vecchio. The
Ponte Vecchio overlooks the Arno River and
in the center of the bridge sits a statue of the
bust of the most famous Florentine goldsmith,
Benvenuto Cellini. The Ponte Vecchio also has
a variety of jewelry and souvenir shops, as
well as some good gelaterias, for a refreshing
dessert.
sunset
Piazzale Michelangelo
Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset is an
absolute must when visiting Florence because
it offers an incredible view of the entire city.
Depending on what season you choose to
visit will vary with the hours of sunset, but
regardless grab a few snacks, maybe a bottle
of wine and watch the sun go down in one of
the most beautiful cities.
