Dear Graduates,
Congratulations – you did it!
Today, you join the ranks of over 65,000 Berkeley College alumni from
around the globe. Now is your time to make your mark on
the world.
There will never be more possibilities for your future than at this very
moment. Face what is next with the same grit, strength of character, and
unwavering faith in yourselves and your abilities that have brought you
here to the finish line.
Your future is just starting. Be fearless!
Take time to celebrate this moment. Think of your family and your
friends who have helped you reach this milestone. Think of your
classmates and your professors, and remember how what seemed
impossible alone was made possible by your Berkeley College family.
And once you have your diploma in hand, I ask you: What’s next?
Whatever you choose for your next chapter, dream big. Pursue something that lights a fire inside of you, because the
greatest successes can only be sustained if there is the passion to support them.
Berkeley College has a 92-year mission of empowering students to achieve lifelong success in dynamic careers. You are part
of this important legacy.
Learning is a lifelong endeavor. Continue to learn and grow, and most of all, to pay it forward.

Faculty Speaker
Pattie Cowan is a Professor in the English Department, Division of General Education. She
joined Berkeley College in 2013, and has more than 25 years of experience teaching at the
college level.
Cowan teaches English and Humanities courses, and is also a professor in the Honors
Program. She developed a course titled “Monsters in the Media,” which explores the
evolution of some of the most well-known “monsters,” including vampires, zombies, aliens,
and even the human being.
Cowan serves on the Berkeley College Community Service Week Planning Committee, where
she spearheads a knitting and crocheting initiative that donates baby hats and blankets to
local hospitals.
Cowan has received numerous awards from Berkeley College including the Be Exceptional Award (2021); Honors Faculty
Appreciation Award (2018); National Society of Leadership and Success – Excellence in Teaching Award (2018); Associate
of the Year Award for Excellence – Honorable Mention (2018); Master Faculty Recognition Award (2017); and President’s
Award for Making a Difference (2017).
She holds a Master of Arts in English, with a concentration in Writing, and a Bachelor of Arts in English, both from William
Paterson University.
Cowan’s favorite Berkeley College memory is the 2018 Honors Symposium, which marked her first time teaching an Honors
cohort from its first day of classes through completion of the program. Her advice to graduates is: “Aim high. Challenge
yourselves. Never stop learning.”
Alumni of the Year Award Recipient
Maria Rosario Behun is Vice President and Community Manager at JP Morgan Chase & Co.
in Dover, NJ. In this role, Behun builds and nurtures relationships with community leaders,
nonprofit partners, and small businesses through financial health workshops, volunteerism,
and community programming. She also works to advance racial equity by supporting Black
and Hispanic communities with the tools and resources to help them improve their financial
well-being.
Behun has more than two decades of experience in the financial services and business
management industries. She previously served in various leadership roles at Valley Bank,
and is a Co-Founder of its Hispanic Organization of Leadership and Achievement (HOLA).
She also managed the Community Service Chapter of HOLA and served as an Ambassador
of the Women in Business Program.
Behun is a member of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of
Commerce, the Latino Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic State Parade of New Jersey’s Youth Event Planning Committee,
and the Butler High School Booster Club. She also serves on the Puerto Rican Association for Human Development, Inc.
(PRAHD) Fundraising Committee.
Behun graduated with honors from Berkeley College in 2016, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business
Administration – Management.
She enjoys spending time with family, visiting her homeland of the Dominican Republic, cooking, coaching, and
photography. She is a resident of Bloomingdale, NJ.

Outstanding Student Award Recipient
Cadjnie Cameau is an Honors scholar graduating with a Bachelor of Business
Administration in Health Services Management. She is a resident of Brooklyn, NY.
Cadjnie was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In 2010, her family made the
difficult decision to come to the United States after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed
her home and left the country’s capital devastated.
When Cadjnie arrived in New York, she faced many challenges, including the language
barrier, as her family struggled to gain financial stability in a new country and a new city.
Cadjnie’s doubts about her future disappeared when Berkeley College presented her with
a scholarship through the Honors Program.
Cadjnie enrolled at the New York City campus, where she flourished as a student leader. She was a regular recipient of
President’s List honors for her academic achievements, served as a student aide to the Campus Operating Officer, and
completed an internship with MarketSmith, a woman-owned media and creative agency.
Cadjnie was also a campus representative on the Student Government Association Board and a member of the Association
of Proprietary Colleges’ Student Leadership Council. In 2021, Cadjnie was a member of the Berkeley College team to
receive an honorable mention at the Black Inventors Hall of Fame Inaugural Design Thinking Collegiate Challenge.
To her fellow graduates, and to those considering pursuing a college education, Cadjnie quotes the author Stephen King:
“You can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start, you will.”
Student Speaker
Angeline Gil is an Honors Scholar, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration
in Health Services Management. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Business
Administration in Management program at Berkeley College. Angeline is a resident of
Paterson, NJ.
As a first-generation graduate and daughter of immigrant parents from the Dominican
Republic, Angeline credits her passion for academia to the example her parents provided,
and the sacrifices they made in pursuit of education.
During her time at Berkeley College, Angeline served on the Executive Board of the
Berkeley College chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success and was
active in the Volunteer Leadership Team. She was also a student representative of the
Student Success Committee and the Community Service Week Committee. Angeline was a 2021 recipient of the Rising
Star Award from the New Jersey Business & Industry Association. She was also inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta
National Honor Society.
Angeline said the COVID-19 pandemic inspired her to seek a career in public health, where she hopes to make an
impact on the healthcare system in the United States by addressing health disparities and barriers that affect vulnerable
populations.
Angeline’s advice to Berkeley College graduates is to view life as a continuous search for knowledge and development:
“Reflect on the journey that has gotten you to graduation and look to the road ahead of you with confidence. Learning
does not end at graduation – it continues as we grow older and move on to new stages of life.”

Academic Regalia and Symbols
ACADEMIC REGALIA
The academic regalia are a carryover from the medieval university to modern college life. The robes and colorful
hoods resemble those worn by scholars and churchmen as early as the 12th century. Then, as now, the garments
distinguished the wearer as a scholar, but they also had a practical element. The robes were warm, and the hoods
could be drawn up to protect the scholar against drafts in unheated buildings.
The gown distinguishes the Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees, and, at the same time, recognizes the
university that awarded the degree. The Associate’s gown is plain with open sleeves and is worn closed. The Bachelor’s
gown has pointed sleeves and is also worn closed. The Master’s gown has oblong sleeves cut away at the elbow, and the
Doctorate degree gown has bell-shaped sleeves with velvet stripes. The hood’s lining matches the color of the graduate’s
university, and the color of the border velvet indicates the special area of study (tan–Business; white–Arts and Letters;
purple–Law; lemon–Library; green–Medicine; light blue–Education; blue–Philosophy; gold–Science; and citron–Social
Work). Members of Berkeley’s Board of Trustees wear Berkeley College’s ceremonial regalia.
THE MACE
The mace, once a weapon of war, became a ceremonial standard in the 16th century. The
walnut-fluted mace has the college crest on both sides. Carried by the faculty marshal in the
academic procession, the mace is a symbol of authority.
The use of a mace during college graduation ceremonies combines symbolic communication
with the principle of vested authority at the most traditional and sacred of academic
celebrations. The mace adds meaning and dignity to the commencement ritual. It reminds
both participants and spectators that education is one of the most cherished attributes of a
free and democratic society.

Academic Regalia and Symbols
BERKELEY COLLEGE TASSEL
The tassel, which can be seen hanging from the mortarboard of a graduate’s cap bound together by a metal clip, is a traditional
aspect of commencement regalia. This item is significant because it serves as a symbol of academic accomplishment and rank.
During most ceremonies, a student’s tassel will be displayed on the right side of their cap prior to receiving their diploma. The
tassel is later moved to the left side of their cap to signify that one has graduated.
CORDS, STOLES, AND MEDALLIONS
Cords, stoles, and medallions are worn around the necks of graduates, signifying academic honors or other achievements.
Cords are made of braided nylon in a variety of colors. Stoles are panels of silk that can be embroidered with letters or symbols.
Medallions are made of metal or glass-like material and hang on colored ribbon.
