Dear Graduates,<br />
Congratulations – you did it!<br />
Today, you join the ranks of over 65,000 <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> alumni from<br />
around the globe. Now is your time to make your mark on<br />
the world.<br />
There will never be more possibilities for your future than at this very<br />
moment. Face what is next with the same grit, strength of character, and<br />
unwavering faith in yourselves and your abilities that have brought you<br />
here to the finish line.<br />
Your future is just starting. Be fearless!<br />
Take time to celebrate this moment. Think of your family and your<br />
friends who have helped you reach this milestone. Think of your<br />
classmates and your professors, and remember how what seemed<br />
impossible alone was made possible by your <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> family.<br />
And once you have your diploma in hand, I ask you: What’s next?<br />
Whatever you choose for your next chapter, dream big. Pursue something that lights a fire inside of you, because the<br />
greatest successes can only be sustained if there is the passion to support them.<br />

Faculty Speaker<br />
Pattie Cowan is a Professor in the English Department, Division of General Education. She<br />
joined <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> in 2013, and has more than 25 years of experience teaching at the<br />
college level.<br />
Cowan teaches English and Humanities courses, and is also a professor in the Honors<br />
<strong>Program</strong>. She developed a course titled “Monsters in the Media,” which explores the<br />
evolution of some of the most well-known “monsters,” including vampires, zombies, aliens,<br />
and even the human being.<br />
Cowan serves on the <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> Community Service Week Planning Committee, where<br />
she spearheads a knitting and crocheting initiative that donates baby hats and blankets to<br />
local hospitals.<br />
Cowan has received numerous awards from <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> including the Be Exceptional Award (2021); Honors Faculty<br />
Appreciation Award (2018); National Society of Leadership and Success – Excellence in Teaching Award (2018); Associate<br />
of the Year Award for Excellence – Honorable Mention (2018); Master Faculty Recognition Award (2017); and President’s<br />
Award for Making a Difference (2017).<br />
She holds a Master of Arts in English, with a concentration in Writing, and a Bachelor of Arts in English, both from William<br />
Paterson University.<br />
Cowan’s favorite <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> memory is the 2018 Honors Symposium, which marked her first time teaching an Honors<br />
cohort from its first day of classes through completion of the program. Her advice to graduates is: “Aim high. Challenge<br />
yourselves. Never stop learning.”<br />
Alumni of the Year Award Recipient<br />
Maria Rosario Behun is Vice President and Community Manager at JP Morgan Chase & Co.<br />
in Dover, NJ. In this role, Behun builds and nurtures relationships with community leaders,<br />
nonprofit partners, and small businesses through financial health workshops, volunteerism,<br />
and community programming. She also works to advance racial equity by supporting Black<br />
and Hispanic communities with the tools and resources to help them improve their financial<br />
well-being.<br />
Behun has more than two decades of experience in the financial services and business<br />
management industries. She previously served in various leadership roles at Valley Bank,<br />
and is a Co-Founder of its Hispanic Organization of Leadership and Achievement (HOLA).<br />
She also managed the Community Service Chapter of HOLA and served as an Ambassador<br />
of the Women in Business <strong>Program</strong>.<br />
Behun is a member of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of<br />
Commerce, the Latino Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic State Parade of New Jersey’s Youth Event Planning Committee,<br />
and the Butler High School Booster Club. She also serves on the Puerto Rican Association for Human Development, Inc.<br />
(PRAHD) Fundraising Committee.<br />
Behun graduated with honors from <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> in 2016, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business<br />
Administration – Management.<br />
She enjoys spending time with family, visiting her homeland of the Dominican Republic, cooking, coaching, and<br />
photography. She is a resident of Bloomingdale, NJ.<br />

Outstanding Student Award Recipient<br />
Cadjnie Cameau is an Honors scholar graduating with a Bachelor of Business<br />
Administration in Health Services Management. She is a resident of Brooklyn, NY.<br />
Cadjnie was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In 2010, her family made the<br />
difficult decision to come to the United States after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed<br />
her home and left the country’s capital devastated.<br />
When Cadjnie arrived in New York, she faced many challenges, including the language<br />
barrier, as her family struggled to gain financial stability in a new country and a new city.<br />
Cadjnie’s doubts about her future disappeared when <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> presented her with<br />
a scholarship through the Honors <strong>Program</strong>.<br />
Cadjnie enrolled at the New York City campus, where she flourished as a student leader. She was a regular recipient of<br />
President’s List honors for her academic achievements, served as a student aide to the Campus Operating Officer, and<br />
completed an internship with MarketSmith, a woman-owned media and creative agency.<br />
Cadjnie was also a campus representative on the Student Government Association Board and a member of the Association<br />
of Proprietary <strong>College</strong>s’ Student Leadership Council. In 2021, Cadjnie was a member of the <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> team to<br />
receive an honorable mention at the Black Inventors Hall of Fame Inaugural Design Thinking Collegiate Challenge.<br />
To her fellow graduates, and to those considering pursuing a college education, Cadjnie quotes the author Stephen King:<br />
“You can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start, you will.”<br />
Student Speaker<br />
Angeline Gil is an Honors Scholar, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration<br />
in Health Services Management. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Business<br />
Administration in Management program at <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Angeline is a resident of<br />
Paterson, NJ.<br />
As a first-generation graduate and daughter of immigrant parents from the Dominican<br />
Republic, Angeline credits her passion for academia to the example her parents provided,<br />
and the sacrifices they made in pursuit of education.<br />
During her time at <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong>, Angeline served on the Executive Board of the<br />
<strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success and was<br />
active in the Volunteer Leadership Team. She was also a student representative of the<br />
Student Success Committee and the Community Service Week Committee. Angeline was a 2021 recipient of the Rising<br />
Star Award from the New Jersey Business & Industry Association. She was also inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta<br />
National Honor Society.<br />
Angeline said the COVID-19 pandemic inspired her to seek a career in public health, where she hopes to make an<br />
impact on the healthcare system in the United States by addressing health disparities and barriers that affect vulnerable<br />
populations.<br />
Angeline’s advice to <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong> graduates is to view life as a continuous search for knowledge and development:<br />
“Reflect on the journey that has gotten you to graduation and look to the road ahead of you with confidence. Learning<br />
does not end at graduation – it continues as we grow older and move on to new stages of life.”<br />

Academic Regalia and Symbols<br />
ACADEMIC REGALIA<br />
The academic regalia are a carryover from the medieval university to modern college life. The robes and colorful<br />
hoods resemble those worn by scholars and churchmen as early as the 12th century. Then, as now, the garments<br />
distinguished the wearer as a scholar, but they also had a practical element. The robes were warm, and the hoods<br />
could be drawn up to protect the scholar against drafts in unheated buildings.<br />
The gown distinguishes the Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees, and, at the same time, recognizes the<br />
university that awarded the degree. The Associate’s gown is plain with open sleeves and is worn closed. The Bachelor’s<br />
gown has pointed sleeves and is also worn closed. The Master’s gown has oblong sleeves cut away at the elbow, and the<br />
Doctorate degree gown has bell-shaped sleeves with velvet stripes. The hood’s lining matches the color of the graduate’s<br />
university, and the color of the border velvet indicates the special area of study (tan–Business; white–Arts and Letters;<br />
purple–Law; lemon–Library; green–Medicine; light blue–Education; blue–Philosophy; gold–Science; and citron–Social<br />
Work). Members of <strong>Berkeley</strong>’s Board of Trustees wear <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s ceremonial regalia.<br />
THE MACE<br />
The mace, once a weapon of war, became a ceremonial standard in the 16th century. The<br />
walnut-fluted mace has the college crest on both sides. Carried by the faculty marshal in the<br />
academic procession, the mace is a symbol of authority.<br />
The use of a mace during college graduation ceremonies combines symbolic communication<br />
with the principle of vested authority at the most traditional and sacred of academic<br />
celebrations. The mace adds meaning and dignity to the commencement ritual. It reminds<br />
both participants and spectators that education is one of the most cherished attributes of a<br />
free and democratic society.<br />

Academic Regalia and Symbols<br />
BERKELEY COLLEGE TASSEL<br />
The tassel, which can be seen hanging from the mortarboard of a graduate’s cap bound together by a metal clip, is a traditional<br />
aspect of commencement regalia. This item is significant because it serves as a symbol of academic accomplishment and rank.<br />
During most ceremonies, a student’s tassel will be displayed on the right side of their cap prior to receiving their diploma. The<br />
tassel is later moved to the left side of their cap to signify that one has graduated.<br />
CORDS, STOLES, AND MEDALLIONS<br />
Cords, stoles, and medallions are worn around the necks of graduates, signifying academic honors or other achievements.<br />
Cords are made of braided nylon in a variety of colors. Stoles are panels of silk that can be embroidered with letters or symbols.<br />
Medallions are made of metal or glass-like material and hang on colored ribbon.<br />
