THE FUTURE Why does Catholic Extension have so much HOPE? 22 / Catholic Extension
Acting in solidarity with and for the poor changes everything. It changes us. It deepens our hearts and our understanding of the Church’s real power. The distinction between the donor and receiver vanishes as we all become beneficiaries of the transformative hope that our work generates. God pours out this gift of hope to us through real people and in real time. It has always been our experience that the Church is enlivened from the edges, from places of poverty, pain and exclusion, because those are places where new hope also emerges. The 1,500 faith communities supported by Catholic Extension in 2022 help us see what hope looks like in the flesh, presented to us in many different forms and often amid seemingly godforsaken circumstances. We see hope in the poorest counties of Appalachia. On July 28, 2022 at 11 p.m., flash flooding swamped Hazard, Kentucky and the surrounding communities. The water ruined everything in its path. Thirty-eight people died. There was no water or power for days. Homes and livelihoods were destroyed. The lone Catholic church in this community is supported by Catholic Extension. Mother of Good Counsel Parish covers 500 square miles, in an area where less than 1 percent of the population is Catholic. Yet no one is denied help. After the floods, some people came to the church just to do their laundry. Some even lived there while waiting for more permanent shelter. In this area where there are no resident priests, Lori Helfrich, the parish life director, was there through it all. A member of the local Presbyterian church said that Helfrich was central to her well-being. Helfrich, she said, “knew what people are crying in their pillows about.” Helfrich has a Master of Divinity degree. But on the wall of her office is not her degree diploma but her framed baptismal certificate. Baptism, which marks us as followers of Christ, is the credential that allows her to be a reverberation of hope in wounded places, an incarnation of God’s active love. There is HOPE in Appalachia.
