LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER
This year we kick off the 22nd edition of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival convinced,
now more than ever, of the importance of our mission. We are doubling our efforts to build
infrastructure for the Latino community in the entertainment industry, while remaining focused on
excellence. Because that is what our community deserves: excellence!
We decided to feature the multiplicity of expressions that exist in the Latino community by
highlighting the individual countries, flavors, colors, languages and perspectives of Latinos in the
US and abroad.
At a time when our industry is faced with the responsibility of evaluating our commitment to fair
practices, LALIFF is proud to offer a safe space for dialogue, connection, and the enjoyment of the
work by the filmmakers and artists of our community.
As members of a historically marginalized group in this industry, we are currently fighting two
battles: one for proper compensation and the other for proper representation in front and behind
the camera. I promise you that the Latino Film Institute will continue to work tirelessly to be part of
the solution for both of these problems.
Enjoy LALIFF 2023. See you at the movies!
Edward James Olmos
Founder & Chairman of the Latino Film Institute (LFI)
CHARCOAL [CARVAO]
DIR. CAROLINA MARKOWICZ | BRAZIL, ARGENTINA | 107 MIN. | 2022
THURSDAY | JUNE 1 | 9:15PM | TCL CHINESE 6 THEATRES
Somewhere in the Brazilian countryside, married couple Irene (Maeve Jinkings) and Jairo (Rômulo Braga) and their nineyear-old
son Jean (Jean Costa) live with Irene’s bedridden father in a precarious, stagnant situation, barely making ends
meet out of their small charcoal production business.
Their strained lives change when a shady nurse offers them a diabolical deal: put their elder to rest and host instead an
Argentinian drug kingpin who urgently needs a place to hide.
For her unsettlingly precise feature-film debut, writer-director Carolina Markowicz blends biting social commentary on the
pervasive forces that prey on the least fortunate. The subtly shifting points of view often take us back to little Jean, whose
cold and witty analysis of the situation amplifies the disturbing motifs that lie at the heart of this bizarre story.
PRESENTED WITH PRELUDE OF A STORY | ASHLEY SALMAN | CHILE | 17 MIN. | 2023
In this heart-rending yet eerily poetic debut from Laura Baumeister — the first feature narrative directed by a Nicaraguan
female filmmaker — the bond between an 11-year-old girl and her mother is tested when they are suddenly separated while
eking out a precarious existence near the country’s biggest landfill.
María lives with her mom Lilibeth near Nicaragua’s biggest landfill, an oppressive place where the pair scramble to survive
by recycling metal scraps and breeding their dog to sell the puppies.
Soon though, the situation gets complicated by local men ready to take advantage of their precarious position, and Lilibeth
decides to leave María in the hands of a couple who run a sweatshop while she tries to solve things.

SATURDAY | JUNE 3 | 9PM | TCL CHINESE 6 THEATRES
In the tiny town of Santa Rita lives Rita, an elderly chapel keeper. She and the women in her church group are in constant
competition to see who is the most saintly. But no matter how many times she polishes the chapel floors, her effort is
always overlooked.
Until the day when, in one of the back rooms, she stumbles upon the town’s beloved statue of Santa Rita, believed to have
been stolen decades ago. Seizing the opportunity, she stages a “miracle” that will finally anoint her as the most admired
woman in town.
With the reluctant help of her neglected husband, Rita finds that the road to sainthood is not exactly glamorous, while the
world around her has been brimming with strange magic all along.
In Laredo, a city in southern Texas on the Mexican border, best friends Silvia and Beba know that the long summer nights of
their youth cannot last forever. Their hang-out spots are so familiar but, stuck in an immigration process, over these places
also hangs the constant threat of deportation. Under these circumstances, home seems a fragile concept.
Between bars, drive-thrus, friends’ couches and the borderlands, they confront the stresses of survival, the future,
and community building. For them, this means protest action for legal abortion and against border control abuses, in a
politically divided America. But the dusty half-light is also a time for poetry and dreams.
Their laughter and creative expression cement a sense of solidarity and belonging in togetherness.
In the near future, humanity builds an artificial “square paradise” on the surface of the moon, which can only be reached if
each one has the appearance and the way of thinking of a square. To achieve this goal, people use “squareism machines”:
presses, corrective devices and cosmetic surgeries that mold their bodies like cubes and close their minds to questioning.
Peter Press, probably the most obsessed citizen to fit in that world, has been living with a press in his head for 20 years and
has just completed his Squarism process. About to get the passage to the moon, an incident forces him to take the press
DIR. BERNARDO RUIZ | USA | 80 MIN. | 2023
The Team chronicles the unique collaboration between Dr. Clyde Snow, a legendary forensic scientist originally from Texas,
and a group of Latin American university students, Mercedes “Mimi” Doretti, Luis Fondebrider, Patricia Bernardi and others,
who were originally dubbed “unlikely forensic sleuths” by The New York Times.
Initially unsure of whether they would do forensic work at all, the team would go on to challenge the official cover-ups of
violent and repressive regimes through the identification of the missing and the collection of evidence. Working for nearly
four decades, it is work that continues to this day.
Working from a rich trove of archival materials and pulling from interviews conducted over a 10-year period, the film
follows this groundbreaking scientific team as they face increased threats to their safety and official attempts to discredit
their work as they seek to provide families with answers for their missing loved ones.

What if you could rewrite your adolescence? In this high school reunion movie turned inside out, filmmaker Cecilia
Aldarondo embarks on a fantastical quest to reconcile her tortured teen years. She ‘goes back’ in more ways than one,
tracking down old foes and friends alike, and re-staging her most primal humiliations while casting herself as a teenager.
In a cathartic, time-bending process of letting go, Cecilia is forced to confront the flawed memories she’s held onto
for years. Oscillating between present and past, hallucination and reality, “You were my First Boyfriend” is a hybrid
Perhaps we will all learn something about growing older and making peace with the things that haunt us.
SPECIAL SCREENINGS
HIP HOP X SIEMPRE
This documentary, executive produced by Jessy Terrero—one of the most influential urban culture directors with a long history of
bringing the two worlds together—will look to the past to remember and celebrate the Latinos who were a foundational part of hip-hop.
Artists from the East to the West Coast and the South—all the way down to Argentina—who have shaped hip-hop’s story in diverse and
significant ways reflect on what the movement means to them on a personal level. We’ll hear from legends like Fat Joe, B-Real, N.O.R.E.,
and Residente, and newer voices on the scene, including Eladio Carrión, Myke Towers, Alemán, Snow Tha Product, Villano Antillano,
and Trueno. Hear how they’re reinventing this art form and continuing to inspire the next generation of artists and fans. Where will the
movement go next? One thing is certain—hip-hop has never played by any rules, so anything is possible.
“Hip-Hop X Siempre’’ will feature an exclusive to Amazon Music soundtrack song by Eladio Carrión, that will be available as an
Amazon Original.
PRIMO
The coming-of-age, single-camera comedy, inspired by Serrano’s life growing up in San Antonio, TX, follows Rafa Gonzales, a wide-eyed
16-year-old being raised by his clever mother, Drea, and his five overbearing uncles (Rollie, Mike, Ryan, Jay, and Mondo) as they live their
lives on the southside of San Antonio. Rafa is at an inflection point, as three big life moments coincide: he and his friends are nearing
the end of high school; he’s pretty sure he just met the girl of his dreams; and he just found out he has a real chance to become the first
person in his family to go to college. Over the course of the series, the group—Rafa, his mom, uncles, friends, and crush—will all affect
each other and help one another grow in ways they weren’t expecting, whether they like it or not.
Created by Shea Serrano and Michael Schur.
