‘Ayurveda

a long and healthy lifespan’ - Charak Samhita

‘Ayurveda contains the Vidya or knowledge

of how to create and maintain the health of the healthy

and cure or palliate the disease of a diseased person’

- Charak Samhita

‘Suffering born of Time (Aging) is inherent in life and cannot

be avoided, but only palliated’ - Charak Samhita

\

‘Heyam Dukham Anagatam’

‘The suffering that has not yet come can be avoided’

- Patanjali Yoga Sutras 2:16

These are the foundational principles of

Ayurveda and Aging

and the Subject of our Retreat.

The Churning of the Ocean of Milk

Before we start, lets go back to the beginning

and the origin of Ayurveda . . .

It is said in Ayurveda:

‘The disease of aging is inevitable, but it may be manifested in a timely or

untimely, comfortable or uncomfortable, disease-free or disease-filled

manner.’ - Charak Samhita

Ayurveda presents the ancient wisdom of how to live our elder years in the best

health possible and that is the subject of this Ayurveda and Aging Yoga Retreat.

This Retreat offers a deep dive into the knowledge and practices of Ayurveda

that can be easily integrated into your daily life, allowing you to live and age

with grace and health.

During our week together, you will be introduced to the ancient wisdom of

Ayurveda with a focus on Aging, enhanced with Peter’s animated stories and

references from the Vedic tradition of India, accompanied by handouts and

a multi-media Keynote presentation.

After the retreat you will be emailed a link to this presentation

as one of our gifts to you!

Along with this Knowledge of Ayurveda, you will have an opportunity to

Experience and enjoy various traditional and personalized Ayurvedic Spa

Treatments given by Karuna, which help to eliminate toxicity and balance

the body.

These two approaches - of Information/Knowledge (Vaidya) and Bodily

Experience (Bishak), offer a wholesome and beneficial approach rooted

in the tradition of Ayurveda. A Vaidya offers diagnosis, knowledge and

understanding of Ayurveda, while the Bishak gives ‘hands-on’ experience

and therapy. Both courses are offered during this retreat as they overlap

and compliment each other.

Every day, there will be an Ayurveda and Aging talk with Peter.

Every day, you will experience the practices of Dinacharya,

(Ayurvedic daily self-care rituals) with Karuna.

Examples of Dinacharya:

Oral care and tongue (scraping), eyes (eye wash), nose (Neti pot)

Yoga classes including Pranayama (breathing practices) and Meditation

Ayurvedic Treatments with Karuna and other practitioners

Vedic Fire Ceremony (Agni Hotra)

Leisure Time to Enjoy the Beach

SYLLABUS: Introduction to Ayurveda and Aging:

History and Introduction to Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda: Aging is a disease brought about by time. Old age

cannot be cured; it can only be palliated. The focus of this course is how

aging inevitably creates an imbalance of Vata Dosha and that by

understanding this we can begin to recognize what is going on in our bodies

and know how to balance that influence, optimizing our health in this

inevitable circumstance of aging.

The Five Elements: Panchamahabhutas - The ‘archetypal’ Language of

Ayurveda

The Doshas are the Five Elements considered in terms of the human

individual

The Law of Karma: Ayurveda is a consideration of the Law of Karma in

terms of health and Disease. A consideration of the ‘Law of Karma’

‘Heyam Dukham Anagatam’- Yoga sutras: “The dukkha or suffering that

has not yet come can be avoided”

Ayurveda in Nature: A look at the principles of Ayurveda in Nature- Sudden

Oak Death, times of day, seasons of the year, seasons of life, location, etc

The Doshas: the Elements in the Body: The Doshas are a consideration of

the five elements in terms of the human body

Dynamics of the Elements: Sankhya (the sister science of Ayurveda) and

the Three Gunas- Sattva, Rajas, Tamas

The Different Stages of Life and the effect on the Doshas

Everything is medicinal and everything is poisonous; Ayurveda will teach

you how to tell the difference between the two.

Kala (Time), Svabhava (Doshic Makeup), Ahar (Diet), Environment

Balancing food, herbs, exercise, sleep, schedule of our days, sleep.

The Cause and Cure of Disease: According to Ayurveda there are two basic

causative factors: Diet and Lifestyle and Transgression of Dharma

Fate and Free Will: Both are taken into account. How could this be true; the

‘hole’ in the Universe and the ‘How?’ of Ayurveda works

Limitation: Ayurveda distinguishes ‘Limitations’ that are unique and

beneficial in medical diagnosis. Without Limitation there can be no

‘freedom’ from limitation.

Agni: Transformative Fire- A fundamental principle of life, health and

Ayurveda

Ama: the result of poorly transformed or digested food-Toxicity and the

most common bedfellow of disease

Samprapti: the six stages of Disease in Ayurveda and why it makes a

difference

Knowledge or Vidya: The Importance of Vidya or knowledge: “The cause

of all disease is Avidya” - Charaka Samhita

Qualities of the Environment: Consideration of the Doshic/Elemental

qualities of our environment Food: How to know what to eat? Person, Time,

Place, Age, Season, etc

The Doshas Again: What Dosha are you?

Summary Considerations

In 2004, Peter completed his Ayurvedic formal studies in India under

Dr. Sunil Joshi, a world-renowned Ayurvedic Physician, and Panchakarma

specialist. There, he received his Ayurvedic Sadhana Padavika Diploma

from Kalidas Sanskrit University

in Maharashtra, India.

Peter has a degree in Vedic Studies and has heard and read many of the

stories, epics, myths, and teachings from the Indian tradition.

He is a comprehensivist, not a specialist, and everything he knows is

connected with everything else. He writes and speaks on a variety of

topics such as Ayurveda, Yoga Philosophy, Eastern and Western

Philosophy, Tantric Tibetan Buddhism, world mythology, Buckminster

Fuller, the Bhagavad-Gita, Vedanta, Advaita, Kabir, Rumi, Adi Da, and

Ramana Maharshi; all of which will be used to illustrate his talks. He is

very familiar with the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and many of these

commentaries and stories enhance one’s understanding of Ayurveda,

Indian culture, and philosophy, ancient and modern.

Karuna began teaching Yoga over 2 decades ago in order to share the

transformative healing she has experienced in her own life.

After years of studying Type to enter Yogic text and Vedic philosophy, she began her

deep dive into Ayurveda. She attended the Ayurvedic Institute in

Albuquerque, New Mexico to complete the Ayurvedic Bodywork

Specialist Program. Ayurveda was so impactful for her, that in 2014

she completed the Ayurvedic Health Counselor program and became

an adjunct instructor.

The study of Ayurveda and herbs led her down the healing path of

Aromatherapy, which she integrates into her treatments and the

natural remedies she creates for clients.

Recently, she attended the Maharani Academy, in Santa Barbara,

California, to become a certified Panchakarma Specialist

(Ayurvedic Rejuvenative Practices)

She has been leading retreats internationally since 2006 and loves the

intimacy of creating safe, sacred spaces for people.

Ayurvedic Consultation

Upon your full payment, you will be emailed an Ayurvedic

Intake Form to print, complete, and email a copy back to

(petermalakoff@gmail.com)

Your 1 hour Ayurvedic Consultation will take place

during the retreat.

It will be recorded and given to you.

You will also receive a personalized informational booklet.

The consultation will help you understand your Dosha,

(your individual elemental nature),

which is one of the fundamental gifts of Ayurveda.

With this knowledge you will gain an essential tool for aging.

After the retreat, you are invited to schedule a free

complimentary (Skype or Zoom) 45-minute follow-up

consultation with Peter to help you adjust to your new routine.

Email your Ayurvedic Intake Form to Peter at least a month

before the retreat. He will go over it thoroughly and will address

any concerns or symptoms you may have.

The Intake Form is extensive because there are many things that

contribute to your health or disease, (especially in the case of

westerners); our exposure to food, restaurants, lifestyle options

are much wider than in ancient times. The completion of your

Intake Form clarifies many factors of causation that are not

determinable via pulse and even other forms of in-person

diagnosis, such as; body type, tongue, speech and gait.

For your consultation, Peter will prepare a personalized booklet

based upon your unique elemental make-up, including specific

guidelines for diet, herbs, drink and exercise.

You will also receive access to an online encyclopedia of

Ayurveda, that Peter has put together over the last 19 years.

You are welcome to share it with others.

Based on your consultation, we can determine the causes of

ill-health and recommend a daily protocol of diet and lifestyle,

including symptomatic treatments if applicable. Following these

recommendations, you will be able to remove the cause,

balance your situation and re-establish optimum health.

Vata Balancing Therapies

Vata is the first Dosha to go out of balance and the elemental quality that

increases with age. Vata is involved in nearly every imbalance.

EVERYONE WILL RECEIVE THESE VATA BALANCING THERAPIES

DURING THE WEEK:

Chakra Balancing Meditation: Guided visualization / meditation from Root to

Crown Chakra, using aromatic blends and mantras to balance and harmonize

each energy center.

Nasya (nose treatment): Warm, medicated oil is dripped into the nostrils to

cleanse, purify and strengthen all parts of the nasal cavity, allowing for clear and

easy respiration. This creates mental clarity and relieves congestion, sinus

pressure, sinusitis, allergies, headaches, migraines, paralysis, cervical spondylosis

and greying hair. It brightens the eyes and complexion; rids the body of excess

Dosha, toxins, pain and stress and has positive affects on the eyes, ears and lungs.

Karna Purna (ear treatment): Means, “ear full” of oil. Warm oil is poured into

the ears to relieve aches and pains in the neck and jaw, headaches, migraines, ear

diseases, ringing in the ears, vertigo and ear congestions. Removes ear wax.

Great for hearing loss, balance, depression relief and ‘swimmer's ear’. It softens

the face and relieves jaw tension (TMJ). It strengthens and nourishes all parts of

the ears.

Shirodhara: Abide in total bliss and easily immerse in deep meditation as

warmed, aromatic, oils are poured over the 3rd eye center in a steady stream.

This stabilizes the activity of the mind, creates mental clarity and balances

emotions. Helps to manage insomnia, headaches, stress and anxiety. It instills

deep relaxation and helps to eliminate old emotions that contribute to chronic disease.

Promotes healthy sleep, improves memory, concentration and focus.

Benefits all nervous disorders, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches,

migraines, insomnia, irritability, mental illness, schizophrenia, stress, vertigo and

can help alleviate facial wrinkles. Nourishes the scalp and is a wonderful hair

treatment for dried, broken or pre-mature grey hair.
