SYLLABUS: Introduction to Ayurveda and Aging:
History and Introduction to Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda: Aging is a disease brought about by time. Old age
cannot be cured; it can only be palliated. The focus of this course is how
aging inevitably creates an imbalance of Vata Dosha and that by
understanding this we can begin to recognize what is going on in our bodies
and know how to balance that influence, optimizing our health in this
inevitable circumstance of aging.
The Five Elements: Panchamahabhutas - The ‘archetypal’ Language of
Ayurveda
The Doshas are the Five Elements considered in terms of the human
individual
The Law of Karma: Ayurveda is a consideration of the Law of Karma in
terms of health and Disease. A consideration of the ‘Law of Karma’
‘Heyam Dukham Anagatam’- Yoga sutras: “The dukkha or suffering that
has not yet come can be avoided”
Ayurveda in Nature: A look at the principles of Ayurveda in Nature- Sudden
Oak Death, times of day, seasons of the year, seasons of life, location, etc
The Doshas: the Elements in the Body: The Doshas are a consideration of
the five elements in terms of the human body
Dynamics of the Elements: Sankhya (the sister science of Ayurveda) and
the Three Gunas- Sattva, Rajas, Tamas
The Different Stages of Life and the effect on the Doshas
Everything is medicinal and everything is poisonous; Ayurveda will teach
you how to tell the difference between the two.
