into ‘qualifications’ and ‘lifestyle and leisure’.

Qualifications courses are linked to a current or future job role.

We are a big part of the Local Skills Improvement Plan, so have

an array of courses that link to what we know local employers

are looking for, in areas we know are growing (see page 9).

GLORIOUS

SALTAIRE

GETTING HERE

We are easily accessible by train or bus from Shipley, Bradford, Leeds, Ilkley, Keighley, Bingley & Skipton.

For up-to-date bus and rail travel: wymetro.com

Need help finding us? View our campus map on page 55.

You can catch a bus from Bradford, Baildon, Keighley,

Bingley, Shipley, Guiseley and other surrounding areas.

There are bus stops situated closely to the College,

along both main roads through the village.

You can get a train to our campus from Bradford

Forster Square, Shipley, Bingley, Keighley, Skipton

and Leeds. Our campus is a short walk from Saltaire

Railway Station.

The College is based entirely within the UNESCO

World Heritage site of Saltaire, where Victorian

mill owner and entrepreneur Sir Titus Salt went

against the usual practices of the 1800s by

building a village for his mill workers to live.

Titus Salt provided high quality sandstone homes,

recreational spaces, a school, hospital, bath-houses

and leisure complex, all in an Italianate style and at

huge personal expense.

It was an enduring part of Salt’s vision that his village

would include vocational education, and we are proud

to act as custodians of several of those historic

buildings.

Our buildings are all located in close proximity

to some of the village’s other tourist-pleasing

attractions such as Salts Mill and Roberts Park,

and all are within a very short walk of the fantastic

range of independent shops, bars and restaurants

that Saltaire is known for. You won’t be short of

places to meet before your class, or relax at after!

We encourage you to visit by bus or train, but there

is also affordable parking on Caroline Street and

Exhibition Road. Both have accessible disabled

spaces, and there are electric charging points

at Exhibition Road.

The Salt Building, which houses the College

Reception and course areas like Business, Media

and Digital is the former school. The Exhibition

Building and its unique, galleried main hall was used

for teaching science and the arts in the Victorian

age, and the Mill Building, home now to course areas

like Art & Design, Languages and Floristry, was once

upon a time the dining hall for Salt’s workers. They

each make inspirational places of learning!

STUDENT

LIFE

become part of our happy family!

You will get to know our amazing tutors, learn in our

beautiful historic buildings, and you’ll always be within

a stone’s throw of all of Saltaire’s appealing attractions.

The College has plenty of communal spaces to

relax or to find your perfect place to get some extra

work done, plus those independent cafés, bars and

restaurants on our doorstep in which to socialise

with your new classmates.

We want all of our students to feel fit, healthy

and happy, and any student can tone up or improve

their physical well-being at our Fitness Centre, based

in Victoria Hall.

To assist with your studies, the Learning Resource Centre

(LRC) provides Shipley College students with a wide range of

QUALIFICATION

COURSES

LOOKING AFTER THE SKILLS NEEDS OF THE REGION

Shipley College’s course offer is designed to address

the skills needed in our area.

We want to make sure that we are helping to provide

the future workforce for our region, and giving our

students and community the best possible chance

to gain essential skills for themselves and for the local

economy.

Shipley College has played a very active part in

helping the West Yorkshire LSIP to identify areas

and themes to prioritise, and we will continue to

play our part by delivering high-quality training in

priority areas such as Health & Social Care, Digital

& Technology, Leadership & Management and

Financial Services.

The West Yorkshire Local Skills Improvement Plan

(LSIP) has been developed by the local Chamber

of Commerce, along with key stakeholders including

employers, colleges, universities and councils. The

specific aim of LSIPs is to allow education and training

to be tailored to the needs of the local business

community.

Businesses have been struggling to find the best

talent to drive their firms forward. This has kept

productivity low and hampered growth. With

LSIPs, we can change all of this.

James Mason, Chief Executive, West & North

Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce

FUNDING

YOUR STUDIES

There are a number of ways in which you can get

funding to assist with the cost of your course,

allowing more people to follow their ambitions.

Many students are eligible for a full fee reduction

depending on personal circumstances, such as what

previous qualifications you have, if you currently claim

certain benefits or are unemployed.

The Government has made changes to the funding

of courses for adults which means more people

than ever qualify for free courses - see pages 50-51

for more information.

There is also support available through the Learner

Support Fund if you are 19+, to help with the cost

of course fees, equipment, travel, and childcare.

ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN

If you’re aged 19+ and studying an approved course

at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6, you can apply for an Advanced

Learner Loan. Eligibility for the loan doesn’t depend

on your income and there are no credit checks.

You don’t start paying back your loan until you have

finished your course and your income is over the

qualifying amount per year (currently £27,295).

Repayments are calculated based on your

earnings after you’ve finished your course, so it’s an

affordable way to access education as an adult.

Being at Shipley College has really changed my outlook on the education system.

The support I have received from the College has really helped me stay on track

and help me work towards completing my course. My tutors have worked with

me to help me feel supported in and out of class, and I have gone from not having

any full qualifications from school, to starting my degree with the Open University.

Leigh, Adult Social Care apprentice

“I have always worked within a health and social care setting and the various

health and social care courses we deliver really do help people to either

develop within their role or to progress further. I really enjoy supporting and

seeing learners grow and develop their skills and knowledge, and when they

are promoted or progress to the next level it is very rewarding.”

ACCESS TO HE HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

1 year / weekday daytime / £3380

Most people get an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for their Access course, so you will not

need to find the money up front. The even better news is that if you do go on to University,

and complete your University course, then Student Finance England will ‘write off’ the

money you borrowed for your Access course, so you will not need to repay it!

Please contact enrolments@shipley.ac.uk for more information.

ACCESS

TO HIGHER EDUCATION

An Access to Higher Education Diploma prepares

adults without traditional qualifications for study

at university. They are usually 3-4 days per week

and take one year to complete.

Here at Shipley College we offer Access routes into Health

& Social Care, as we have an ageing population in Bradford,

and an increasing demand for those services.

We offer two pathways under Access to Health & Social

Care. You will learn about human physiology, psychology

and get an understanding of professional healthcare

practice.

The Health Professions pathway prepares you for university

study in areas such as Nursing and Midwifery, where the

Social Sciences pathway prepares you more for areas like

Social Work, Sociology & Criminology and Youth

& Community Development.

“Our Access to HE courses are a great way to get back into education and progress

onto university if you don’t have the right qualifications. You can choose between

the Social Sciences or Health & Social Care pathway depending on the career you’re

interested in pursuing. Alongside learning specialist skills as part of the qualification,

our students come away with abilities including time management, organisation and

increased confidence - all things that will benefit them when at university and in their

future careers.”

Mark, Head of Care

16. 17.

IRAM

ACCESS TO HE

As a mature student I started my educational journey back in 2018. I didn’t really

know what path or career I wanted to pursue initially, but during my placement

at a primary school some time ago, I came to the realisation that I wanted

to ultimately advance a career into social work.

I was told by university staff last year to enrol in an Access to HE course, and that could

lead to a social work degree. Now I’m almost finished with this course, I can honestly say

so far it has been the most challenging seven months of my life. However, with only two

months left to go, it feels like the time has rushed by. It has been extremely rewarding

since I’ve accomplished so much.

The HE to Social Science team and staff at Shipley College have been incredibly helpful

throughout. I have made lots of new friends with whom I will undoubtedly stay in

contact for a very long time.

Along with our subjects, we have received a lot of additional support, such as with CV

writing and interview preparation. I finally feel ready and prepared to attend university

now that I have all of this in mind. I was offered the opportunity to become a Student

Ambassador, which has opened up an endless amount of additional possibilities for me

throughout the year. As a Student Ambassador for the Access course, I spoke on behalf

of the course at College open events, volunteered my time to help give potential

prospective students an overview of the course itself, and contributed to the content

of the College course guide by giving testimonial talks.

Additionally, I was able to join the NHS Volunteer Service by participating in an online

course, which led to my placement at the Lynfield Mount Ashbrook Ward. I can’t express

my gratitude to the faculty, staff, and other members of Shipley College enough for making

my time here as enjoyable and productive as possible.

All students, particularly mature students such as myself who are wanting to progress

their education into university, should sign up for a course here because of the

encouragement and guidance available.

Our courses cover everything you need to know to

give the level of support required to provide aid, from

non-life-threatening injuries to medical emergencies,

ensuring the best possible outcome is achieved.

First Aid training can support you in a Health or Care

valuable knowledge to parents and carers.

“First Aid has been part of my work for over 25 years and I continually keep up

to date with my own training and have over 20 years experience of delivering

First Aid courses. All of the First Aid courses provide learners with the

knowledge and skills to be confident with dealing with First Aid incidents at

work. I love meeting new people and giving them the skills that they need, not

just for work but for them and their families. Life saving skills are so important

and we need more people to have these skills as they do help save lives.”

ILM LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT LEVEL 3 AWARD

ILM LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA ..

23-30 weeks / weekday daytime / £1987

The course at Shipley College was a great introduction to leadership for me.

The ‘lectures’ were interactive and the theory was really easy to apply in my role

at work. The staff were amazing with feedback in and out of the lessons and

provided great resources that really helped when writing the essays.

Anyone wanting to learn more about leadership, management and/or mentoring

would really benefit from the course. I found it really easy to fit into my working

week and I was applying what I had learnt from day one.

Molly - Account and Business Development Executive, Shoo Social Media

LEADERSHIP

& MANAGEMENT

Being a good leader is something that comes

with experience, but there are skills you can

have in your arsenal to effectively manage a

team of any size to success. Even if you’ve been

in a Leadership role for years, there are always

new techniques you can learn to improve your

management style.

Many local employers report difficulties recruiting

people with the managerial skills they need, so there

are opportunities that come with these qualifications,

and understanding how to manage and motivate your

staff is always key to a positive work environment.

Whether you’re leading through organisational change

or needing to improve team engagement and morale,

we have courses to help you become a confident

leader.

“My background includes 10 years in FE and 20 years in Business, Management

and training across the private and charitable sectors. Shipley College’s ILM

courses are a great way to upgrade your skills, network and invest in yourself.

The best part about teaching this course is learning from other people’s

experiences and journey, and also seeing people grow in confidence

as they learn new skills.”

WENTBRIDGE

HOUSE HOTEL

Having worked with a number of national and local FE and HE providers

to enhance our career pathways, we contacted Shipley College after hearing

about the Customer Service training they offered. Shipley College were very

flexible in developing their core programme to integrate a number of specific

learning outcomes, creating a bespoke training programme that addressed

our needs.

Wentbridge House Hotel is a 4 star Country House Hotel which was established over

60 years ago. We are independently owned and run with great care and attention by our

passionate team. We pride ourselves on offering outstanding customer service, where

our guests are our first priority. We employ approximately 100 staff extending across

our hotel and village gastro pub, the Blue Bell Inn, Wentbridge.

We provide a blended learning programme for our staff development through e-learning,

workplace coaching and on-the-job training. We felt that although our existing training

programme addresses the majority of our needs, investing in developing our team

in a classroom environment without day-to-day operational distractions would enable

our team to reflect and review any areas for growth. The training that Shipley College

provides is linked to a Level 2 qualification and WorldHost Principles of Customer Service

training which provided the added benefit of enabling our staff to obtain a qualification.

Through taking part in the training our team now have more in depth knowledge in terms

of providing our guests with exceptional quality service. It has provided team members

with the platform to develop new transferable skills whilst enabling cross-functional

team development opportunities.

The learning has provided team members with higher levels of confidence in dealing with

our guests. Team members have fed back that they feel greater equipped to deal with

different situations through their enhanced knowledge in the core principles of customer

service.

I would highly recommend this course. Our trainer Simon was exemplary in learning

about his students to ensure he met all personal learning needs, as well as learning about

our overall culture. He provided a range of activities for our team to review our existing

practices against the key principles being delivered.

CHARLY

HORTICULTURE

I have always loved plants, I have great memories of gardening with my Mum

at an early age but I was in my 30s before I realised I wanted to have a career

in Horticulture. I was lucky enough to be working at Shipley College, who do

health and well-being days, with little activities from different departments.

I planted a hanging basket and remembered how much I loved gardening.

While I enjoyed my job in the Marketing department, helping young people and adults

get into education, I knew it wasn’t the right career path for me. I decided to do one

of the College’s ‘taster day’ courses and then a short course in Horticulture and really

had a light bulb moment - this is what I wanted to do! I decided to leave my job at the

College and immediately came back as a student. I did the BTEC Level 3 in Horticulture

and I loved it! I loved learning, and it’s so practical and relevant that I have actually used

everything I learnt on the course in my horticultural career.

While studying I worked part-time and within 3 months I started a garden design and

maintenance business, then went fully self-employed after I had finished the course and

gained more experience working for family and friends. I had an amazing 5 years working

for wonderful clients and when I wanted to continue my learning journey and move in

a new direction, I discovered that the Royal Horticultural Society offered professional

work placements (PWP). This is a fantastic way for me to gain the kind of knowledge and

experience you can only get working in a beautiful garden that is also a visitor attraction.

I’m so happy I decided to change careers, people don’t realise the amount of jobs there

are in Horticulture and the variety of roles. Alongside starting your own business you can

work for private companies, organisations like the RHS and National Trust, community

groups, or private gardens. Perhaps you love sport, then specialise in sports turf or golf

course maintenance. If you are really sociable and love working with people, you can work

in community and school outreach. There are so many roles which require different skills

and often with Horticulture careers no two days are the same!

Ultimately, working outdoors and with the earth is really beneficial for your mental health

and wellbeing. I think Shipley College is the best place to study Horticulture in West

Yorkshire, the staff are fantastic and they know how the skills they’re teaching you can

be applied in real life. A lot of the students who have done horticulture courses have gone

on to be really successful, I would definitely recommend studying a Horticulture course

at Shipley.

“Functional Skills English at Shipley College is fantastic! The classes are great

fun and you will learn a lot about writing in different contexts for different

audiences. The most rewarding thing about teaching this course is knowing

that obtaining a Level 2 qualification in English (or maths) enables so many

positive work and life opportunities for students. All of a sudden; all the doors

pop open: to apply for university courses, to enrol onto management level

courses at work or college and to apply for ‘dream’ jobs. ”

ARE YOU AN

EMPLOYER?

HELP CREATE YOUR FUTURE STAFF

All organisations need pipelines from which

to recruit new staff who are suited to their

business. Shipley College has been working

closely with local organisations for many years

- we want our students to be those new staff!

There are various ways that we can work together

so that you can be first in the queue to showcase your

sector and your company to each new wave of possible

recruits, while giving our students the chance to

demonstrate what they are learning and the freshness

they could bring to your business.

This could perhaps be via offering work placements,

employer visits or masterclasses. We can provide

opportunities for a relevant student to come and

actually work at your organisation - maybe by taking

on apprentices, T-Level students or supported

interns; and we have many examples of this working

out so well that the student is offered permanent

employment - and everyone wins!

All FE college courses already have employer input at

to the Bradford region’s future workforce, helping

influence what sector skills and knowledge our

students are taught, and ultimately creating perfect

future job applicants!

Please contact Vice-Principal (Curriculum & Quality)

Greg O’Shea at goshea@shipley.ac.uk for initial

discussions.

A talented workforce is key to success, so

we want to be your first port of call when it

Saltaire is a distinctive place. Of course, it was

created as an Italianate industrial model village

to provide 19th-century mill workers health

and happiness, which is quite a quirky start!

The village remains independently-spirited, with

unique shops, galleries, cafés, bars and restaurants

helping to keep Saltaire exceptional.

As a celebration of Saltaire’s offbeat originality, we
