Lizard Rock a step closer
Northern Beaches MPs
Rory Amon and Michael
Regan are taking
the fight to the new State
Government over the NSW Department
of Planning’s decision
to allow the Lizard Rock
housing rezoning proposal to
move to the next assessment
stage.
The proposal would see
450 dwellings built by the
landowner, the Metropolitan
Local Aboriginal Land Council
(MLALC), on bushland at
Belrose.
On 9 June, Labor wrote to
Northern Beaches Council
advising that the plan would
progress.
“During the recent election
campaign, the then Liberal
Government guaranteed that
it would stop the Lizard Rock
development – unfortunately,
the Labor Party is intent on
dumping dense development
on the Northern Beaches, as
DEBATE: A community petition gathered by Wakehurst MP Michael Regan
and community opposition to Lizard Rock will be debated in July.
they have threatened to do
for years, without any proper
infrastructure in place, or
being planned,” said Pittwater
Liberal MP Mr Amon.
“This is another slap in the
face of our community.”
On June 19, Wakehurst
Independent MP Mr Regan
tabled a petition in NSW
Parliament with more 12,000
signatures, showing the widespread
community opposition
to the Lizard Rock housing
proposal.
“The size of this petition,
organised by local group the
Bushland Guardians, means
the Government is obliged to
respond to our community’s
concerns, and ensure the issue
is debated in State Parliament,”
said Mr Regan.
“The current Lizard Rock
proposal goes against good
planning and environmental
protection principles.
“It would see the destruction
of large swathes of
bushland and place homes
and people in an area with
high bushfire risk and limited
infrastructure.
“Seriously, have we not
learned from the most recent
of bushfires?
“Further, the latest independent
studies rule out this
style of development in high
bushfire zone areas and is
why Ingleside was finally
knocked on the head and its
dwelling targets distributed
to areas like Brookvale for
infill development where
infrastructure exists.”
Mr Regan said he would
continue to work constructively
with all stakeholders
to help find a smart solution
that was fair for both the
MLALC and the community.
– Nigel Wall
*Debate on Lizard Rock and
the community’s opposition
to the proposal will take
place in the NSW Legislative
Assembly from 4-4.30pm on
Thursday 29 June. General
public is invited to attend.
