Cannabis and Skin Health
Despite all the
attention focused
on inhaling
Cannabis, there
are other ways
Terese Bowors of utilizing it that
deserve attention
as well! Our skin is the largest organ
in the body and it can benefit from
Cannabis application in a variety of
ways.
Cannabis utilized topically, on the
surface of the skin, has some pretty
big benefits that offer an alternative
to ingesting or inhaling. Remember
we learned about the Endocannabinoid
System, ECS (May 2023, May
2022) and how this system brings
balance and homeostasis to the
other systems in our bodies? The ECS
helps to balance our integumentary
system too! The ECS has receptors,
CB1 and CB2, throughout the body
that are meant to bind to our own
endogenous cannabinoids but they
are also competent receptores for
Cannabis to bind to as well. We have
an abundance of these receptors on
our skin that can support treatment
of a variety of skin diseases. ECS functions
in the skin by controlling and
balancing skin cell growth and regulating
immune responses. Research
indicates that many conditions may
benefit from topical application of
Cannabis including: inflammation,
acne, dermatitis, dry skin, hair loss (alopecia,
effluvium), hirsutism (excessive
hair growth), itching, seborrhea,
skin tumors, eczema, pain, anti-aging
and psoriasis.
What products will work best for your
skin? As with many of the methods
of intake with Cannabis, everyone is
unique in what works for them.
Topical / Transdermal products are
applied directly to the skin. Topical
Cannabis can assist with aches, pains
and skin disorders that are up to
about 1 inch deep. Topical application
does not enter the bloodstream
and does not generally cause
intoxication. However, transdermal
applications are designed to penetrate
deeper, potentially entering the
bloodstream and should be used
with more care.
Topicals begin to work within 20
min and the effects may last for 2-4
hours. Cannabis is generally resistant
to absorption into the skin, so rub in
very well to encourage the cannabinoids
to absorb into the skin when
using creams, lotions and salves.
Transdermal creams, lotions, salves
and patches use chemical uptake
agents and microderm needles to
allow the cannabinoids to penetrate
the skin into the bloodstream. Some
products also use slow release technology
for even, long lasting dosing.
Transdermal products begin to work
immediately and the effects may last
for 4-8 hours.
When getting started with a topical
product, avoid Transdermals until
you know how your body responds
to Cannabis. You may find it helpful
to begin with a topical product that
is predominantly CBD. Products often
start with 250mg of Cannabis and
can go up to as high as 1,000mg of
Cannabis, experiment to find what
strength is right for you. If CBD alone
does not bring the relief you are
looking for, consider trying some
THC in the product to boost efficacy
and bring more relief. THC in topical
products don’t tend to cause
intoxication unless it is a Transdermal
product. Remember to rub in well for
best absorption.
