It would not happen
without them.
You may live in CANADA...
According to Jeff Foxworthy:
• If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through
May, You may live in Canada.
• If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and
they don’t work there.
• If you’ve worn shorts and a parka at the same time.
• If you’ve had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone
who dialed a wrong number.
• If you measure distance in hours.
• If you can drive 90 km/hr through 2 feet of
snow during a raging blizzard without
flinching.
• If you carry jumper cables in your
car, and your wife knows how to
use them.
• If you design your kid’s
Halloween costume to fit over
a snowsuit.
• If the speed limit on the
highway is 80km, you’re
going 95 and everybody is
passing you.
• If you know all 4 seasons:
Almost winter, winter, still
winter, and road
construction.
New Feel...
Discover 65 visited the IRIS Seniors Expo in Castlegar in June and we got some
great feedback about the magazine. One recommendation was the texture of
the paper needed to change to allow pencil to be used easier on the puzzles...
So we’ve changed it up! Please let us know what you think!
Bruce ‘The Raven’ and
Arlene Van Hellmond - Karma Halleran
Bruce: I had grown up on
the frozen ponds of Winnipeg
and after winning
both city and provincial
championships with the
Isaac Brock Community
Center I was invited to go
play hockey with the Moose Jaw Canucks
in the newly formed Western Canada
Junior Hockey league. Arlene was born
in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan where she
studied to nursing. One night the Canucks
were playing in Moose Jaw and I
was high sticked right between the eyes
and rushed to the hospital for 14 stitches.
Arlene it turned out was on duty in the
Emergency Department and assisted the
doctor getting me ‘stitched up good’. So
54 years later I am sitting on our beautiful
beach on Kootenay Lake with my best girl
still keeping me in stitches and laughter.
In 1969 I was drafted by the Rangers and
sent to play on their farm team – the
Omaha Knights in the CHL. Those were
good years. The following year I was involved
in a four car accident in Winnipeg
that resulted in severe injury to my knees
and back and so I could not continue to
play at that level. As you can imagine, it
4
“The Raven’
was the
nickname
I earned
playing in Trail... I
would CAW when I
wanted the biscuit :)
July 2023, Discover Sixty-Five
was devastating at
the time. After healing
up, I was presented
an opportunity to
join the Trail Smoke
Eaters Senior team in
the WHL. I talked to a
friend who was familiar
with the Smokies
and he told me it was
a great organization,
a hockey crazy town,
great fans - great
people...
Arlene and I and our
Bar, our baby girl arrived
in Trail in October
of 1972. 3 years later our son Mike was
born. My friend was right, the town and
fans were amazing! We were blessed to
have Trail residents such as Mr.
Fini Rossi and Doc Mykietyn
and many other committed
residents, not only supporting
Senior Hockey but providing
fan support like fan support like
“Al’s Your Pal” and the Underwear
Band – if you lived in Trail
at that time, you know what I
mean – Al Tognotti
was very supportive!
My brother Andy
had similar aspirations
but he decided
that giving people penalties and throwing
them out of the game was more fun
than having to fight for the puck!!! When
he outgrew Jr Hockey he transitioned into
refereeing. His experience as a high level
player served him well and he moved up
in the refereeing ranks.
Moving to Trail and the West Kootenay
was definitely one of best things we
could have done without knowing it right
away...
While playing for the Smoke Eaters, I attended
Selkirk College and studied electronics.
I only got about a year and a half
into the program, before letting it go as I
was too busy - what I learned was invaluable
in my future endeavours though.
Me scoring the winning goal against the Weyburn Red Wings
in 1968. The goalie I think was Merlan Jenner (he was able to retrieve
his jock strap after the game from the 5th row of the stands...
I decked him, that bad or good – depending how you look at it)
We had started up the Kootenay Health
Spa in downtown Trail. There was nothing
else like it, at the time and the community
really supported us. It was during
this time that in an effort to create merchandise
for our own business, VH Sport
was born. We really had no experience,
other than being a business in need of
merchandise, but we were quick learners
with good attitudes, we caught on and
our skills grew. We hired the right people
and insisted on high quality manufacturing.
We offered customized artwork and
clothing design. We offered a variety of
choices like you would find in big cities
like Calgary and Vancouver. I did the designing
and creating, and Arlene ran the
business... in addition to her nursing part
time and raising our daughter and son.
We found we had the capacity to see opportunity,
and the ability to work hard to
achieve success.
5 years ago, after 44 years of running our
successful clothing, embroidery, screen
printing, and laser engraving business we
retired to our Longbeach property north
of Nelson. We had given the business the
best we had, happily serving the needs
of teams and businesses throughout
the Kootenays. There comes a point in
your life when you realize that if you did
not have to get up in the morning and
do this job, you would no longer miss it.
So we retired.

Arlene was happy to do less, finally.
I found myself walking
off into the woods, sitting on a
stump and crying... it took about
8 months until I was over it. I still
get teary eyed when I see my
grandkids playing sports; Hockey,
Soccer, Basketball, Baseball
and Gymnastics. We are proud
grandparents watching them
compete and grow into the people
they are becoming.
Our retirement was really only
possible because of Ben and
Romy. We were so thrilled to
find 2 people who had the same
commitment and desire to provide
this service as we had. It
was obvious that they enjoyed
producing the merchandise with
care and attention to detail.
Many of our old clients have continued
to support them and of
course many younger and new
clients as well. They have taken
up the challenge and improved
all aspects of the business. We
think they are amazing, and are
so happy to watch them excel at
their VH Sport!
I guess the last time I played
hockey was in the ‘80s with the
team we sponsored called the
Van Hell Raisers – well known in
their day around the area. I have
not played for a number of years
now, once a week just hurts too
much !
Arlene and I are so grateful for
the choices and opportunities
that found us over the years. Our
best choice (other than each
Ben and Romy
with their
rainbow
of threads!
other) was moving to the West
Kootenay and purchasing the
Long Beach Property years ago
where we have retired to. I keep
very busy – I have my tractor for
property maintenance, and we
still have some rentals in Trail to
manage and look after. They do
not manage themselves:)
I think we both agree, our
greatest joy in life has been
raising our family in the West
Kootenay, and now watching
them raise their families, (seven
grandchildren) near us, in
Nelson and Castlegar., and one
great-grandson in Lethbridge.
Life is good.
D65: After my visit with Bruce
and Arlene I thought about all
the business I have done with
them over the years... from
our kids jerseys and jackets,
and many of our own hockey
and baseball uniforms. I
can easily imagine that they
have served many teams,
businesses, communities
numerous times, over their
44 year in the business. I too
am happy they found Ben
and Romy as we continue
to use their services as well.
I especially enjoyed hearing
how they approached the
opportunities that came
before them... they met
them with curiosity, enthusiasm
and creativity. Numerous
times they jumped on a
good idea or deal because
they recognized its value...
and then made it
work. I admire their
attitudes.
Hanging in their memorabilia room is this very large
poster - titled Winners and Losers. it reminds me of one of my
favourite quotes: “Atttude is everything, pick a good one.”
They really have. ~ D65
Winners and Losers.
A winner is always part of the answer,
A loser is always part of the problem.
A winner always has a program,
A loser always has an excuse.
A winner says, “Let me help you do that”
A loser says, “That’s not my job”.
A winner sees an answer for every problem.
A loser sees a problem for every answer.
A winner says, “It may be difficult, but it’s possible”,
A loser says, “It may be possible but it’s too difficult”
A winner listens,
A loser doesn’t.
When a winner makes a mistake he says, “I was wrong”
When a loser makes a mistake he says, “It wasn’t my fault”.
A winner says: I’m good but not as good as I could be”.
A loser says: “I’m not as bad as a lot of other people”.
A winner feels responsible for more than his job.
A loser says I only work here.
Pathways to PEMF
The term PEMF means - Pulsed
ElectroMagnetic Fields and describes
in modern physics the specific
application of unique pulsed,
electromagnetic frequencies and
intensities for the health and wellness
benefit of human beings and
animals.
History of Magnetic Field Therapy
More than 3500 years ago different
ancient cultures used the healing
power of magnets. During geco-Roman
empire (when Aristotle and
Hippocrates were actively contributing
to ancient wisdom) magmets
were often used to heal different illnesses.
In the ancient civilizationsof
Central and North America the mystic
and medical importance
of magnetic field therapy was
well known.
Early clinical studies on electromagnetic
fields were
conducted in the 1960s in
Russia and Japan. Beginning
in 1973 the beneficial effect
of time-varying low energy
magnetic fields were documented
with increasing frequesncy
in North America. In
1982 working from Columbia
University School of Medicine
Dr. Andrew Bassett published
a series of 4 articles on
the positive effects of pulsating
electromagnetic fields for
non-healing bone fractures
in 3 well known North American
medical journals.
In the decades to follow there has
been an explosion in scientific research
pertaining to the pulsating
electromagnetic fields. Today there
are many thousands of research articles
in scientific journals worldwide.
Magnetic field therapy is considered
safe and effective for a wide variety
of health conditions.
PEMF helps to improve overall
health and reduce a verity of disease
conditions, including, but not limited
to the followings:
Improving nerve cell healing - Stimulating
the neural cells to improve
their functions.
Cannabis Corner
Cannabis and Skin Health
Despite all the
attention focused
on inhaling
Cannabis, there
are other ways
Terese Bowors of utilizing it that
deserve attention
as well! Our skin is the largest organ
in the body and it can benefit from
Cannabis application in a variety of
ways.
Cannabis utilized topically, on the
surface of the skin, has some pretty
big benefits that offer an alternative
to ingesting or inhaling. Remember
we learned about the Endocannabinoid
System, ECS (May 2023, May
2022) and how this system brings
balance and homeostasis to the
other systems in our bodies? The ECS
helps to balance our integumentary
system too! The ECS has receptors,
CB1 and CB2, throughout the body
that are meant to bind to our own
endogenous cannabinoids but they
are also competent receptores for
Cannabis to bind to as well. We have
an abundance of these receptors on
our skin that can support treatment
of a variety of skin diseases. ECS functions
in the skin by controlling and
balancing skin cell growth and regulating
immune responses. Research
indicates that many conditions may
benefit from topical application of
Cannabis including: inflammation,
acne, dermatitis, dry skin, hair loss (alopecia,
effluvium), hirsutism (excessive
hair growth), itching, seborrhea,
skin tumors, eczema, pain, anti-aging
and psoriasis.
What products will work best for your
skin? As with many of the methods
of intake with Cannabis, everyone is
unique in what works for them.
Topical / Transdermal products are
applied directly to the skin. Topical
Cannabis can assist with aches, pains
and skin disorders that are up to
about 1 inch deep. Topical application
does not enter the bloodstream
and does not generally cause
intoxication. However, transdermal
applications are designed to penetrate
deeper, potentially entering the
bloodstream and should be used
with more care.
Topicals begin to work within 20
min and the effects may last for 2-4
hours. Cannabis is generally resistant
to absorption into the skin, so rub in
very well to encourage the cannabinoids
to absorb into the skin when
using creams, lotions and salves.
Transdermal creams, lotions, salves
and patches use chemical uptake
agents and microderm needles to
allow the cannabinoids to penetrate
the skin into the bloodstream. Some
products also use slow release technology
for even, long lasting dosing.
Transdermal products begin to work
immediately and the effects may last
for 4-8 hours.
When getting started with a topical
product, avoid Transdermals until
you know how your body responds
to Cannabis. You may find it helpful
to begin with a topical product that
is predominantly CBD. Products often
start with 250mg of Cannabis and
can go up to as high as 1,000mg of
Cannabis, experiment to find what
strength is right for you. If CBD alone
does not bring the relief you are
looking for, consider trying some
THC in the product to boost efficacy
and bring more relief. THC in topical
products don’t tend to cause
intoxication unless it is a Transdermal
product. Remember to rub in well for
best absorption.
Sex and the Senior...
is NOT an urban
legend!
Unlike some myths suggest, sex isn’t
just for the young. Many seniors still
enjoy their sexuality into their 80s and
beyond. A healthy sex life is both fulfilling
and good for other parts of your life
too — such as your physical health and
self-esteem. Remember when we were
younger... like in our 20s and 30s... really
we couldn’t/didn’t want to imagine our
parents or grandparents as sexual beings.
As we reach these age plateaus we
realize that nothing has really changed
we are who we are, and some of us want
to stay sexually active, and others of us
don’t. There is no right or wrong about it.
Aging brings life transitions that
can create opportunities for older
adults to redefine what sexuality and intimacy
mean to them. Some older adults
strive for both a sexual and intimate
relationship, some are content with one
without the other, and still others may
choose to avoid these types of connections.
Sexuality is affected by one’s emotional
and physical state. How you physically
feel may impact what you are able to do
and how you emotionally feel may direct
what you want to do.
Many older couples find greater
satisfaction in their sex lives than
they did when they were younger. They
may have fewer distractions, more time
and privacy, and no worries about getting
pregnant. They also may be better
able to express what they want and
need, which can offer an opportunity for
greater intimacy and connection.
Normal aging also brings physical
changes that can sometimes interfere
with the ability to have and enjoy sex.
As we age, our bodies change, including
our weight, skin, and muscle tone. Some
older adults don’t feel comfortable in
their aging bodies. They may worry that
their partner will no longer find them
attractive. Health conditions can
cause physical problems, along with
stress and worry, that can get in the way
of intimacy or enjoying a fulfilling sex life.
Two common changes that older adults
experience are related to the sex organs.
For Women: Menopause is another
change that may affect sexuality and intimacy
in older adults. During a woman’s
menopausal transition, which can last
for a number of years and ends when she
has not had a period in 12 months, there
may be a variety of symptoms. These can
include hot flashes, trouble falling and
staying asleep, and mood changes. The
desire to have sex may increase or decrease.
Women using hormone therapy
to treat hot flashes or other menopausal
symptoms may experience a considerable
boost in sexual interest and drive.
The vagina can shorten and narrow, and
the vaginal walls can become thinner
and stiffer. For most, there will be less
vaginal lubrication, and it may take
more time for the vagina to naturally lubricate
itself. These changes could make
certain types of sexual activity painful
or less desirable. Water-based lubricants
can be used to make sex more comfortable,
whereas moisturizers can be used
regularly over time to replenish moisture
and reduce dryness.
For Men: Impotence (erectile dysfunction,
or ED) also becomes more common.
ED is the loss of ability to have and
keep an erection, and the erection may
not be as firm or as large as it used to be.
ED is not a problem if it happens every
now and then, but if it occurs often, talk
with your doctor. If ED is the problem, it
can often be managed with medications
or other treatments. A health care professional
may suggest lifestyle changes,
such as limiting alcohol or increasing
physical activity. They prescribe testosterone
for people with low levels of this
hormone. Although taking testosterone
may help with ED, it may also lead to
serious side effects and can affect how
other medicines work. Make sure to talk
with your health care provider about
testosterone therapy and your testosterone
levels. Be wary of any dietary or
herbal supplements promising to treat
ED. These products may have dangerous
side effects or interact with prescription
medicines.
Age does not protect you from
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Older people who are sexually active
may be at risk for diseases including
syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydial infection,
genital herpes, hepatitis B, genital warts,
and trichomoniasis, or the HIV virus
which becomes Aids.
If you don’t know your partner
really well, protect yourself. Ladies,
it is 2023, everyone carries condoms
these days. Use them for any kind of
intercourse. During oral sex dental dams
or other barriers will protect you. Your
health care provider is able to advise you
on how to protect yourself from STDs
and infections. If you are concerned,
make an appointment! Remember, you
are never too old to be at risk.
If you are single, dating may be easier
later in life when you’re more confident
and sure of what you want. If you’re in a
relationship, you and your partner may
discover new ways to be together as you
grow older. Communication is key.
What are you waiting for? Try new
things, new positions. Have you always
fantasized about something a little
kinky? Does role playing intrigue you?
You may find something new that
really gets you in the mood and makes
you feel good about yourself and your
partner.
Cilantro Lime Rice
If you want rice with a
stronger flavor profile,
cilantro lime rice is the
way to go and pairs really
well with Tilapia.
• 1½ C of water
• 1 C Jasmine rice
• bunch of fresh cilantro
• 1 lrg fresh lime, or
more to taste
Rinse your jasmine
rice (do not soak) by
pouring into a strainer
inside a larger bowl, and
cover the rice grains
with water. Swirl around
with your hands then
lift from the bowl. Pour
fresh water and repeat
process until water is
mostly clear.
(do nott soak)
Let rice dry - about 15
minutes in the strainer.
Ready to cook?
Start your rice just before
you put the veggies,
then fish go into
the oven.
Using a large pot add
the washed cup of rice
to the 1½ C of water.
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400°. Line a
small baking sheet with parchment
paper.
In a food processor, add the flour,
sugar, baking powder and pinch
of salt. Pulse once to combine.
Add the frozen butter diced into 6
pieces. Pulse 10-12 times, until the
butter is the size of small peas.
Add all of the cream to the feed
tube and continue pulsing. The
dough will not come together into
a ball and that’s okay.
Dump the dough onto a floured
surface and knead a few times until
a dough forms. Pat the dough into
a ½” thick rectangle. Cut the dough
in half to form two square biscuits.
Bring to a boil over high
heat, then reduce heat
to low and simmer covered
for 15 minutes.
It has a nice zestiness
that enhances the flavor
of the fish, and the kick
of lime juice plays well
with the buttery tilapia.
Move the biscuits to the prepared
baking sheet and brush with extra
cream and sprinkle with extra
sugar.
Bake 15-18 minutes until the biscuits
are lightly golden brown. Let
them cool completely.
In a small bowl, stir together the
diced strawberries, lemon juice
and sugar. Allow to set at least an
hour, until the berries soften and
red juice forms at the bottom of the
bowl.
When ready to assemble, whip the
cream with the powdered sugar
and vanilla.
Slice each biscuit in half, spoon on
the whipped cream and top with
strawberries. Serve immediately.
Summer Safety Essentials
The summer months are upon
us - a time of adventure and
relaxation as we connect with
the outdoors. As we age, our
bodies physiology changes in
ways that boost sensitivity to
summer’s heat, and sun exposure.
Research has shown that
around 80% of heat related
hospitalizations occur in people
over 65.
Here’s how to stay safe and
still enjoy all that summer has
to offer:
Stay Hydrated
As we age, we are more likely
to experience dehydration as
we don’t sweat as much or recognize
thirst as well as we once
did. And further to the challenge,
diuretic pills are a common
medication that cause the
body to lose fluids. To prevent
dehydration, make sure you
are drinking plenty of water.
Electrolyte drinks containing
potassium, magnesium and sodium
provide excellent hydration
on those very hot days!
Use Sunscreen
Our skin becomes thinner over
time, making it more sensitive
to sun exposure. Wear
loose clothing, a hat, and sunglasses
for protection. Use a
broad-spectrum sunscreen
with at least SPF 30, remembering
to cover the neck, ears,
and nose. Finding shade helps
give the skin a break and keep
cool. Sun damage from UV rays
can be life threatening but often
shows up as dark spots and
premature aging. Niacinamide
creams are excellent for those
struggling with dark spots.
Know When to Stay Inside
Spending time outside is wonderful
but on very hot days it
is best to limit outdoor time to
the early morning and after the
sun has set. The sun is strongest
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Community
centres, shopping malls
and libraries are great places to
spend time if your home does
not have air conditioning and
you are looking to stay cool!
Phone Scams
Don’t be intimidated by emotional
pitches or high-pressure sales tactics. If
a caller tries to get you to buy something
immediately, or is trying to intimidate
you with some kind of penalty – hang
up. If it sounds like it might be interesting,
request the information be mailed to
you or ask for a phone number that you
can call once you have verified them.
If they are uncooperative, hang up.
Canadian Charities can be verified with
the Canada Revenue Agency
Collection Agencies: Verify with the appropriate
provincial agency, or with the
business they say they represent and
who you “owe money to”. Tell them to
send you an invoice. Do not give them
your credit card info over the phone
unless you initiated the call.
They say they are Revenue Canada: Get a
call back number and verify it on the Revenue
Canada website.
Credit Cards - if you receive a call from
your credit card company, say you will
call them back, and then call the number
on the back of your card. They will know
if there is a problem.
Family Member in Immediate Trouble?
Unless you truly recognize the voice,
assume it is a scam. Ask who it is... make
them tell you the name. Be proactive and
talk with your grandchildren and agree
on a password - like Dad’s middle name,
or Mom’s maiden name.
It is okay to hang up when something
does not seem right.
George was out shopping at
the mall when he met his friend
Kevin outside the jewellers.
Kevin noticed that George had
a small gift-wrapped box in his
hand.
“So what’ve you just picked up,
George?” Kevin asks.
“Well, now that you’ve been
asking,” replies George, “it’s me
and the missus’ anniversary
tomorrow. And when I asked
her this morning what she
wanted for our special day she
said, ‘’Oh, I don’t know, dear, just
give me something with a lot of
diamonds.’’
“So what’d you get her?” Kevin
asks.
George replied, smiling, ”I
bought her a deck of cards.”
Senior-Preneurship
~ Bruce LaCroix
This month, I thought I would quote what some wise elders have to say about aging, entrepreneurship,
and related topics. Probably more interesting than what I have to say. : )
“There is a fountain
of youth: it
is your mind, your talents, the creativity
you bring to your life and the lives of people
you love. When you learn to tap this
source, you will truly have defeated age.”
— Sophia Loren
“Aging is not lost youth but a new
stage of opportunity and strength.”
— Betty Friedan
“When you grow old, you get rid of
the dependence on other people’s
opinions. You are not afraid to lose,
because you understand that it’s
not the end of the world. You look at
the failures from the height of your
age, with humor, or even irony. Now
you can do anything you want!”
— Elena Lashko
“Don’t limit yourself. Many people
limit themselves to what they think
they can do. You can go as far as
your mind lets you. What you believe,
remember, you can achieve.”
— Mary Kay Ash
“Age is a plus and your professional
and life experience help to avoid
many mistakes. Also, as an adult,
you take a sober look at things and
don’t romanticize entrepreneurship.
You don’t go ahead of yourself and
you carefully study every next step”.
— Lisa B.
LOL
Did you hear about the new
corduroy pillowcases?
They’re really making headlines.
What do you call an alligator
in a vest?
An investigator.
What do you say to a Llama that
loves picnicking? Alpaca lunch.
“Age can’t be an obstacle! A person
is either capable of doing something
or not. If you are such a type, you will
do your best even if you are over 60. I
became an entrepreneur and founded
my dance school when I was 63. I
was inspired by the idea of teaching
my peers to dance and move beautifully
and correctly. In ordinary dance
schools, they often feel out of place
and sometimes can’t keep up with
the younger students. My school is
meant for people in their 50-60, that
is what makes my project unique.”
— Tatiana Konnova
“Wisdom is not a product of schooling
but of the lifelong attempt to acquire
it.”
— Albert Einstein
.“The path
of spiritual
growth is a
path of lifelong
learning.”
— M. Scott
Peck
“Your time
is limited, so
don’t waste
it living
someone
else’s life.”
— Steve
Jobs
“When I’m old and dying, I plan to
look back on my life and say ‘wow,
that was an adventure,’ not ‘wow, I
sure felt safe.”
— Tom Preston-Werner
This last one is my favourite quote.
Life is too short to be bored, or boring.
While a cliché, like most there is
truth in it:
“Life is not a destination, but a journey.
The final destination is death. So
enjoy the journey.”
Does your journey include a stint as
an entrepreneur, even part-time and
mostly for fun? As an adventure? Then
get going! Questions, comments,
Cucumber News
We can live your whole lives consuming
something and never know
it’s value... we recently learned how
valuable cucumbers are and wanted
to share the information!
1. Cucumbers contain most of the
vitamins you need every day, just
one cucumber contains Vitamin
B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin
B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin
C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Potassium and Zinc.
2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put
down the caffeinated soda and pick
up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a
good source of B vitamins and Carbohydrates
that can provide that
quick pick-me-up that can last for
hours.
3. Tired of
your bathroom
mirror
fogging up after a shower? Try
rubbing a cucumber slice along
the mirror, it will eliminate the fog
and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your
planting beds? Place a few slices
in a small pie tin and your garden
will be free of pests all season long.
The chemicals in the cucumber react
with the aluminum to give off a
scent undetectable to humans but
drive garden pests crazy and make
them flee the area.
5. Looking for a fast and easy way to
remove cellulite before going out
or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or
two of cucumbers along your problem
area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals
in the cucumber cause
the collagen in your skin to tighten,
firming up the outer layer and
reducing the visibility of cellulite.
Works great on wrinkles too!!!
6. Want to avoid a hangover
or terrible headache? Eat a
few cucumber slices before
going to bed and wake up
refreshed and headache free.
Cucumbers contain enough
sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes
to replenish essential nutrients the
body lost, keeping everything in
equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover
and headache!!
7. Looking to fight off that afternoon
or evening snacking binge?
Cucumbers have been used for
centuries and often used by European
trappers, traders and explorers
for quick meals to thwart off
starvation.
8. Have an important meeting or
job interview and you realize that
you don’t have enough time to
polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut
cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals
will provide a quick and durable
shine that not only looks great
but also repels water.
9. Out of WD-40 and need to fix a
squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber
slice and rub it along the problematic
hinge, and voila, the squeak is
gone!
10. Stressed out and don’t have
time for massage, facial or visit to
the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber
and place it in a boiling pot
of water, the chemicals
and nutrients
from the
cucumber will react with the boiling
water and be released in the steam,
creating a soothing, relaxing aroma
that has been shown to reduce the
stress in new mothers and college
students during final exams.
11. Just finish a business lunch
and realize you don’t have gum or
mints? Take a slice of cucumber and
press it to the roof of your mouth
with your tongue for 30 seconds
to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemicals
will kill the bacteria in
your mouth responsible for causing
bad breath.
12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to
clean your taps, sinks or stainless
steel? Take a slice of cucumber and
rub it on the surface you want to
clean, not only will it remove years
Food Facts
of tarnish and bring back the shine,
but it won’t leave streaks and won’t
harm your fingers or fingernails
while you clean.
13. Using a pen and made a mistake?
Take the outside of the cucumber
and slowly use it to erase
the pen writing, also works great on
crayons and markers that the kids
have used to decorate the walls!
Once again, The Washington Post has published
the winning submissions to its yearly
NEOLOGISM CONTEST, in which readers
are asked to supply alternate meanings
for common words.. and the winners are:
CREAMY COLD CUCUMBER SOUP with DILL
This soup requires a blender to become truly
“creamy” and frothy – a food processor alone won’t
do the trick. A generous drizzle of olive oil, emulsified
with the cucumbers, is what gives the soup its
smooth, dreamy texture.
Ingredients
• 2 lbs. cucumbers, peeled, seeded and chopped
• 1/4 c. cold water (perhaps more)
• 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar (perhaps more)
• 1 large shallot, chopped
• 1 small garlic clove, chopped
• 3 Tbsp. chopped dill (or more, to taste)
• 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tsp. honey (or maple syrup for vegan)
salt to taste
Directions
Place half of the cucumbers in the bowl of a blender.
Add cold water and blend on high speed until cucumber
is pureed. Add remaining cucumber, shallot,
garlic, and dill and blend until pureed. With the
blender running, slowly add olive oil, blending on
high until the soup becomes quite creamy.
Blend in the honey and salt and pepper to taste. Add
more vinegar, dill, honey, or water to tweak consistency
and flavour to your liking. Chill for a few hours
for best flavor, although it’s delicious right away as
well.
1. Coffee (n.), the person upon whom one coughs.
2. Flabbergasted (adj.), appalled over how much
weight you have gained.
3. Abdicate (v.), to give up all hope of ever
having a flat stomach.
4. Esplanade (v.), to attempt an explanation while
drunk.
5. Willy-nilly (adj.), impotent.
6. Negligent (adj.), describes a condition in which
you absentmindedly answer the
door in your nightgown.
7. Lymph (v.), to walk with a lisp.
8. Gargoyle (n.), gross olive-flavored mouthwash.
9. Flatulance (n.) emergency vehicle that picks
you up after you are run over by a steamroller.
10. Balderdash (n.), a rapidly receding hairline.
11. Rectitude (n.), the formal, dignified bearing
adopted by proctologists.
12. Pokemon (n), a Rastafarian proctologist.
13. Circumvent (n.), an opening in the front of
boxer shorts worn by Jewish men.
14. Frisbeetarianism (n.), (back by popular demand):
No Dot About It by Barbara Olson
New Possibilities To
Reboot & Renew
While diligent financial planning is critical, we tend to be
far less thoughtful when it comes to planning how we will
spend the next 30 or 40 years of our lives. The shift into retirement
is so much more than a financial event. It changes your
lifestyle and self-perception and completely alters how you
will spend your time.
As a retirement coach, I often hear from anxious clients who
are unable to visualize the rest of their lives. Planning the rest
of your life can be less daunting if you start before you retire.
We cannot know what the future holds for us, but the adjustment
will be less challenging if you hold the attitude that
this is a time of possibilities and new beginnings. Sometimes
people talk about the emptiness and boredom that can happen
if you don’t have a plan. You’re less likely to encounter
problems if you’ve thought in advance about what you want
it to be like.
Retirement is a time to disengage from your old self and
reboot, renew and create something new. Take the time to
clarify your core values, discover activities that are meaningful
to you, identify relationships that you want to nurture,
and create a bucket list. Spend time visualizing what an ideal
day, month, or year might look like. This pre-retirement work
helps you deal with the emotional challenges of leaving your
work identity behind. I advise my clients to have a plan but
to hold it lightly. Circumstances change as we move through
life and your plan should change and evolve along with
you. For example, clients who plan to travel must consider
how mobility or health changes might affect their plans. You
might want to consider traveling in a group, letting someone
else take charge, or maybe someone else can do the driving?
Good proactive planning can help reduce any potential negative
affects later on down the road.
Sudoku
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve
a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill
each row, column and box. Each number
can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
The more numbers you name, the easier it
gets to solve!
July Horoscope
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
1st Week: This week you are
surrounded by a heightened
sense of romance. It could
be from reading a favourite
book or watching a beloved
movie, Aries. Use it to spice
up your love life.
2nd Week: Aries, there
are tips and tricks to learn
through observation of others,
particularly if those people
are doing something
with style. Keep your eyes
peeled for inspiration.
3rd Week: Sometimes you
feel a need to be in charge
to prove that you are capable,
Aries. This week take a
back seat and fall in line with
the established modus operandi.
4th Week: Don’t rush in and
act combative this week, Aries.
Take a more delicate approach
to convince others
to see things your way. As
the saying goes, “You catch
more flies with honey than
with vinegar.”
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21
1st Week: Taurus, something
you desperately need
seems to be missing from
your life right now. It’s more
than a misplaced item. Focus
your attention this week
on figuring out what it is.
2nd Week: Taurus, let other
people know what you
are feeling by wearing your
heart on your sleeve a little
more often. You don’t have
to be stoic all of the time. It is
alright to ask for help as well.
3rd Week: You may get into
the habit of focusing on
past mistakes, Taurus. This
week, instead of falling into
old habits, think about how
you can grow and learn from
your mistakes.
4th Week: Are you feeling
like you may want to be a
wellness warrior of late, Taurus?
Start by taking inventory
of the foods in your home
and making some healthier
changes.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21
1st Week: Try not to listen to
any gossip this week, Gemini.
It will only frustrate you
and could put you further
out of sorts. Avoid people
who love to talk about others
for the time being.
2nd Week: It may seem like
the days this week will trickle
by at a snail’s pace, Gemini.
It is perfectly fine to enjoy
some slow-moving days for
a change to help you recharge.
3rd Week: Gemini, it’s time
to be sociable and put out
feelers for different adventures.
Make sure you share
on social media channels
that you’re available and
ready to have fun.
4th Week: Gemini, if you are
looking to make a few new
friends, ask others to connect
you with like-minded
individuals. You never know
who you might meet until
you give it a try.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22
1st Week: Is there a luxury
you have been craving lately,
Cancer? You could be very
tempted to give in and make
a purchase this week, even if
your finances may not be on
solid ground. Be careful.
2nd Week: Cancer, kick up
your flirtatious nature, particularly
if you have your eye
on someone and are eager
to start a relationship. Those
who are attached can rekindle
the passion.
3rd Week: Cancer, keep
track of your mood this
week, as it is easy to swing
from glad to glum in no time
at all. Friends can help keep
you on a more even keel for
the time being.
4th Week: Cancer, if a delicate
issue has been troubling
you, reach out to
someone you can trust and
begin to talk things through.
You will likely feel better just
getting things out.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23
1st Week: Leo, your emotions
will be all over the
place the next couple of
days. This turmoil may compromise
your usual objectivity
as well as your good
sense. Try to talk your feelings
through.
2nd Week: Leo, share your
optimism and level-headedness
with someone who
could use your support right
now. You have an uncanny
way of making others feel
relaxed just by being in your
company.
3rd Week: Leo, a refreshing
sense of energy comes your
way, and you start to jump
head-first into all of those
projects that have been
pushed aside. You’ll sail
through tasks in no time flat.
4th Week: Leo, are you
ready to take your project
to the next level? Brainstorm
with a coworker about the
best way to get ahead and
make a mark with this endeavor.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
1st Week: Virgo, your imagination
knows no bounds
this week. If you’re ready to
delve into a creative project,
do so now when you have a
lot of ideas and outside inspiration.
2nd Week: An interesting
travel opportunity comes
your way, Virgo. However,
at first glance it might not
seem like the type of trip
you would normally take.
Keep an open mind and be
surprised.
3rd Week: Vacation vibes
are high this week, Virgo.
You are daydreaming about
potential destinations. Narrow
down your prospects
and zero in on your favourite
features.
4th Week: It could be time
for a move and you just
aren’t ready to admit it,
Virgo. You may have gotten
comfortable in one
place, but a move could
prove the right decision.
These are the weekly Horoscopes for the month of
July Week number 1, 2, 3 and 4 this month!
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 2
1st Week: You could have
doubts about a friend you
thought was close to you.
Has this person promised to
do you a favour and didn’t
deliver, Libra? Be patient before
you draw conclusions.
2nd Week: Libra, if you do
not like the way things are
going in one of your relationships,
it is alright to
speak up and encourage
change. You are an equal
partner and compromise is
necessary.
3rd Week: Treat yourself to
something special in the
days to come, Libra. Perhaps
it is a costly fragrance you’ve
been spying or a new piece
of furniture. You earned the
indulgence.
4th Week: Libra, there are
a lot of ideas swimming
around in your head. You
may need to put some
things down on paper to see
what really might be worth
doing in the days to come.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
1st Week: Feelings of confusion
may get in the way of
your ability to make sound
decisions this week, Scorpio.
You might need to lighten
your load, since you often
take on too much.
2nd Week: Scorpio, you
have to jump on every opportunity
to get ahead that
is presented to you, even if it
may temporarily upset your
schedule and life. The investment
will be worth it.
3rd Week: It’s time to take
your foot off the gas and
slow down to a crawl, Scorpio.
A well deserved break
should be on your itinerary;
otherwise, you may burn
through all of your fuel prematurely.
4th Week: Connect with a
friend or even your partner
for an intimate dinner this
week. You’ve been moving
in different circles and it’s
time to get on the same
page.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21
1st Week: Sagittarius, do
not get into an argument
with someone who has a
different opinion from your
own. Ask to get more information
about why he or she
sees things in a particular
way.
2nd Week: Get involved
with helping others as
much as possible, Sagittarius.
This way you will be in
the unique position to help
someone close to you who
needs it soon enough.
3rd Week: Sagittarius, teamwork
is the answer right
now, especially when your
to-do list seems to be growing
exponentially. Recruit
some close confidantes to
help you along the way.
4th Week: Invite people to
stop by and cheer you up,
Sagittarius. You’ve been going
through a rough patch
and there’s nothing like happy
faces and new perspectives
to bring about a smile.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20
1st Week: A bothersome
feeling may persist for much
of the week, Capricorn. It’s
almost as if you’ve forgotten
to do something but do not
know what. All will be revealed
in due time.
2nd Week: Capricorn, there
is nothing that you cannot
accomplish when you lay on
the charm. Others will flock
to you this week and want
to hear what you have to say.
3rd Week: Make your career
a priority this week, Capricorn.
You may be feeling unsettled
where you are now.
There is no saying where
things will go, so exercise
caution when making decisions.
4th Week: Capricorn, be
sure to check your bank account
pretty regularly; otherwise,
you may lose track of
spending and get yourself
into a financial mess that
could be tough to get out of.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18
1st Week: Aquarius, be prepared
to be a listening ear to
a friend or loved one who
needs to work through a few
issues. You are able to give
trusted advice in this matter.
2nd Week: Enjoy every
meeting of minds that you
encounter, Aquarius. Each
relationship and discussion
can help broaden your horizons,
and you can use that
information wisely.
3rd Week: Aquarius, wanderlust
is on your brain.
You’ve been fantasizing
about all of the grand adventures
you can take. Figure
out a way to fund a getaway
and get started.
4th Week: Aquarius, you
may be your own worst enemy
this week, especially as
it pertains to thinking that
someone may be trying to
cause trouble with you at
work. Get the facts before
acting.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20
1st Week: Listen carefully
and take notes when
someone at work provides
directions for an upcoming
task, Pisces. You don’t want
to make any mistakes as it
could delay the project.
2nd Week: Pisces, no matter
how good a partnership
looks on paper, if you are not
meshing with this individual
then it is not a partnership
worth pursuing. Focus your
attention elsewhere.
3rd Week: Pisces, something
profound may have
happened to you and you
may need to sift through
all of your feelings over the
next few days. Take all the
time you need to process.
4th Week: Pisces, there is a
process to everything. Remain
patient and stay the
course no matter how excited
you are. Rest assured that
things will work out if you
can hang in there.
