Studying at the 

School of Design

Master of Sciences (MSc) 

The MSc program is awarded after two years 

of study (120 ECTS) and aims to provide advanced 

training in more highly specialized areas. 

The credit system ECTS represent the workload 

of the academic year of study

Each subject is assigned a number of credits (CFU) 

which students obtain when they pass 

the final examination. 

The CFU fully coincide with ECTS credits.

EXAMS AND GRADES 

Exams are graded using a scale of 30, 

where 18 is the minimum passing grade 

and 30 cum laude the highest. 

Students have the possibility to refuse the final 

mark and take the exam again in a following exam 

session (with exception of the design studios). 

The final grade in a course can be based either 

on the final examination only or on a combination 

of the final examination and of the course work. 

The grade requirements and exam modalities 

are indicated online in the course details 

and explained at the beginning of the course.

HOW TO SEARCH YOUR COURSES 

It's important you read the courses details before 

you submit your study plan. 

This will help you to indicate a preference among the 

optional elements available in your MSc Program. 

In order to search the courses you’ll attend, and 

read the courses details you can see this tutorial

Deadlines for Italian 

Degree Students 

After enrolment, the student must submit the 

Study Plan and insert the optional elements (first 

year courses of your choice and / or any courses with 

language option). 

Enrolment 1st Phase: 

28/08/2023 - 05/09/2023 

2nd Phase (scrolling ranking): 


The Study Plan is done only once per 

year. Therefore, it must include the courses you wish 

to attend both in the 1 st and in the 2 n d semester of each 

academic year. 

The student can decide how many credits to include 

in the Plan from 30 to 80 credits. Depending on the 

number of credits included, the amount of the 

tuition fees may vary. 

Before inserting optional courses in the Study Plan, it 

is advisable to check the course details and schedule 

published online.

ALLOCATIONS 

In the Master Programs, the section is assigned at the admission. Students may 

have the possibility of a personalized study programme, given the opportunity to 

opt for the Final Design studio in the second year, for the elective courses and 

for some curricular classes (where applicable). 

The allocation procedure in the optionable courses of the 2nd year is based on 

a merit ranking considering the student’s academic average and the 

number of CFU earned (weighted average) on July 31 st of each year. 

The preferences expressed will be accepted considering the student’s 

ranking until the maximum number of places available for each course is 

reached, the first options will be evaluated first. Students are invited to pay 

attention to all the options expressed once registering the study plan, checking 

in particular the semester and the timetable of the lessons. 

COURSES IN EXCESS 

The courses in excess that can be registered are related to the didactic offer of 

other programmes, with the exception of the Design studios (laboratorios). 

These courses do not enter into the calculation of the credits to achieve the MSc 

Degree and not contribute to the academic records. However, they are 

considered in the calculation of the credits on which the tuition fees are 

calculated. Acceptance in the excess courses depends on the availability of 

places after the study plan registration.

EXAMS SESSIONS 

The exam sessions are distributed during the year: 

1st semester courses the exams sessions are on: 

- February with 2 different exams dates available 

- July with 2 different exams dates available 

- September with 1 exam date available 

2nd semester courses the exams session are on: 

- July with 2 different exams dates available 

- September with 1 exam date available 

- February with 2 different exams dates available 

The Design Studios will only have two exam dates 

scheduled at the end of the semester the design studio has been 

held. 

Given the particular nature of the Workshops and the Design 

Studios, no make-up exams are foreseen. If not passed, the 

Design Studios and Workshops must be re-attended 

the following academic year. 

To be able to sit an exam session, 

you must register within the deadlines provided 

through the Online Services. 

The evaluation that students 

can receive are:

After the publication of the marks by the 

Professors, students have the possibility 

(before the marks are consolidated)

grade, the Professor will consolidate 

(i.e. register) the grade in your career

even though some courses and/or lectures may be set online. 

Politecnico will ensure the access of the lessons in presence in complete safety, and in

Courses last one semester and are held once per year 

1st year Design Studios are preparatory to the Final Synthesis Design Studio; 

therefore, students need to pass them in order to be able to register for 

the 2 nd year Design Studio 

The attendance at the Design studios and workshops is mandatory: to acquire 

attendance, it will be necessary to be present at minimum at the 80% of the classes. 

Some monodisciplinary and integrated courses may be offered also to nonattending 

students. 

It’s important to check if this option is indicated in the course details. Otherwise, the 

attendance is required as per the Design studios (80% of the classes).

annually monitors and controls the progress of the
