Pilates, Physiotherapy,
& Pregnancy
Have you been wondering if Pilates is a good
exercise for you during pregnancy? What about
after you have your baby (or babies?!). At
Lakeview Movement Studio (part of Lakeview
Physiotherapy & Acupuncture), we have a
comprehensive team offering Pilates as a method
of rehabilitation and recovery during pregnancy
and beyond.
What is Pilates and how can Pilates help
those who are pregnant and those who
have given birth?
Pilates is a type of exercise that incorporates the
body and mind. Pilates has essential principles
that instructors and physiotherapists use to train
breath, awareness, alignment, efficiency,
balance, concentration, control, and flow. The
centre of Pilates training is learning to control the
core, which is often challenged in pregnancy
and after birth as the body undergoes dramatic
changes. Learning how to isolate and coordinate
the deep trunk and pelvic floor muscles can help
reduce pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and
improves post-partum pelvic floor strength. These
exercises are ideal for pregnant and post-partum
mums to learn mindfulness, relaxation, and how
to connect to their changing or changed bodies.
I want to keep active during my
pregnancy. Is Pilates an effective way
to do that?
YES, YES and YES. Pilates is a wonderful
addition to any exercise program.
Pregnancy can also make it more difficult to
maintain alignment and posture, which can
cause pain and dysfunction. Learning how to
adapt your posture and maintaining mobility and
strength throughout your pregnancy can reduce
the risk of pelvic pain as well as preserve your
ability to do daily functional movements.
