His glory and the express imag.e of His Person," "the
image of the invisible God", ·"God manifest in the flesh."*
This is the glorious revelation of God to man.
Thus it is that He is "the Light of the world". Just
before His birth it was said of Him that "Through the
tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high hath
visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and zn
the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of
peace.'' t
And as it was with the world in its entirety, so it
is with the little world of every human heart. It is as
vain for a man to set forth to reach God by his own
effort as it would be to try to journey up to the sun, even
as it is said in the book of Job,_:_" Canst thou by search"'.

There was an old fable among the Greeks of one.
Icarus, who made himself wings to fly upward to the sun,
and fastened them to his shoulders with wax. And as
he mounted, the wax melted and the wings dropped off,
and he fell back to earth. Even so, as you know well,

us down to earth again with our hopes broken and
crushed, and the true knowledge of God as far off as
