OMG! What an off season we’ve had! Lamar Jackson from the Ravens
finally getting his new contract at $260 million only to be outdone by
Justin Herbert form the Chargers for $262.5 million and then we have
Joe Borrow from Bengals who’s expected to get even more! Can’t wait
to see what Mahomes gets in his new updated deal. This is CRAZY! Or is
it? Keep in mind that Amazon Prime paid $11 billion for Thursday Night
Football. NFL is consistently the most watched program year after year.
In 2022, 18 of the top 20 shows on Sunday Night Football and the other
two were the Super Bowl and the NCAA National Championship game.
I guess money really does talk. Speaking more about football, this year
KTSM is introducing the Big Ten football in prime time on Saturday nights!
This along with Notre Dame makes KTSM NBC the station to lock in!
I recently had a nice conversation with UTEP head coach Dimel and he
kinda blushed when I asked him how he thought UTEP would look? His
body language indicated that UTEP will be really good. Expect a crowded
stadium because everyone loves a winner. Speaking of winners, how
about them NMSU Aggies? After losing their first four games, they end
up winning a bowl game! And they’re chomping at the bit for the I-10
rematch with UTEP to avenge their 20-13 loss of last year. This should
be a great game.
We all know that football is big and High School football has even gotten
bigger. This year’s Ultimate Football Guide is celebrating 15 years
and every year seems to only get better. I had an opportunity to talk to
a couple of El Paso’s Fine 9 players and I was really impressed with how
they handled themselves and how respectful they were. Congratulations
to the parents of these kids for raising some true gentlemen. For
more on High School football and the Fine 9 check out this year’s UFG
on KTSM.com. Also, check out all schedules for the NFL, UTEP, NMSU,
Texas, A&M, Notre Dame and Texas Tech.
Enjoy the 15th edition of the Ultimate Football Guide and keep tuned in
to KTSM for the best in Sports, News and Weather.
Best,

“Been Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.” That’s Carrie Underwood’s iconic theme song for
NBC’s prime time football extravaganza “Sunday Night Football ”. For many true believers,
the long wait for the return of NFL football is almost over. It has been six exceedingly
long months since the Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in four years
back in February.
This year, the SNF slate will offer 19 games, including two on Thursday – the season opener
and on Thanksgiving night. The schedule gets off to a rip-roaring start on Thursday, Sept.
7 when the Detroit Lions take on the defending world champion Chiefs. Three days later
on Sept. 10, the Dallas Cowboys will travel to New Jersey to take on division rival New York
Giants in a matchup that is usually one of the most physical games of the entire season.
Other SNF matchups of note include:
Pittsburgh Steelers at Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 24, with the return of one of
the NFL’s most intense and historic rivalries.
Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 8, again another one of the
league’s most fabled rivalries and two of the NFL’s most successful franchises.
Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals, on Sunday, Nov. 5, matching two of the AFC’s recent
success stories. Last year’s game between the same two teams was postponed and then
canceled when Buffalo’s Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the field after making
a tackle. Fortunately, Hamlin is OK and has been cleared to return to the football field.
Needless to say, the drama will be thick in this one.
San Francisco 49ers at Seattle on Thursday, Nov. 23, in the nightcap of a day of football
on Thanksgiving.
Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys, Sunday, Dec. 10, in another NFC East showdown.
For the second year in a row, Mike Tirico will handle play-by-play duties with his sidekick
Cris Collinsworth providing color commentary. Melissa Stark will be the sideline reporter.
Studio hosts and analysts include Maria Taylor, Tony Dungy, Jason Garrett, Chris Simms,
Mike Florio and Rodney Harrison. Sunday Night Football has been primetime TV’s toprated
show for 12 straight years and it’s easy to see why. You can watch all the games
on KTSM. You can also catch the action on NBC’s streaming service Peacock available
with paid subscription.

Year 4 for Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
Year 3 for Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
Year 8 for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
Year 3 for Cowboys “lionbacker” Micah Parsons.
And here they go, the Dallas Cowboys 2023 setting their sights on goals for
the first time since, well, at times seemingly forever ago.
Like finishing with a winning record three consecutive seasons for the first
time since four straight from 2006-09, that being 14 years ago.
Like recording three consecutive double-digit winning seasons since
the six straight from 1991-96, that being 27 years ago.
Like qualifying for the playoffs three consecutive seasons
for the first time since those six straight from 1991-96, that
being 27 years ago.
Like advancing to the NFC Championship game, let alone
the Super Bowl, for the first time in 28 seasons, having to go
back to 1995 for both.
And all these are the goals for 2023, quite possibly the expectations,
too, after five consecutive 12-5 seasons, consecutive playoff
appearances and offensively led by a quarterback having

qualified for the playoff in four of his first seven
seasons, with one of those three non playoff years
derailed by a season-ending injury five games into
the 2020 season.
Then defensively trying to become elite, led by that
position-less player energizing this renaissance
over his only two seasons, waking up the ghosts of
playoffs past in this franchise’s 64th season when
at one point fans must have thought winning seasons
and playoff appearances were their inalienable
right.
In trying to enhance their chances of accomplishing
this continued makeover the Cowboys acquired two
players with pre-draft trades to fill positions of need,
bringing in veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks and
veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, fortifying the
offense by seriously upgrading the wide receiver
corps and making this surging defense whole with
the addition or the corner.
Add to that first round draft choice Mazi Smith,
a much-needed space-eater inside at defensive
tackle, the re-signing of their two leading tacklers
from 2022, safety Donovan Wilson and linebacker
Leighton Vander Esch, while franchising running
back Tony Pollard, signing restricted free agent
offensive tackle Terence Steele to a one-year re-

stricted free agent contract and the signing of veteran defensive tackle Johnathan
Hankins, another large individual with run-stopping prowess.
And while the Cowboys of 2022 matched their second most points scored in a single
season with the 467 since the 479 of 1983 – 530 the franchise record set in 2021
with a 17-game season asterisk – and third most in franchise history, this Cowboys
defense must take a step toward being elite if the Cowboys are to take the next step
up in the playoffs.
Consider this? In two losses last season, both in overtime, the Cowboys scored 28
and 34 points, yet losing 31-28 to Green Bay and 40-34 to Jacksonville, although the
Jaguars walk-off touchdown was scored on an interception return. But please, scoring
34 on the road should have been enough to bet a playoff team. And this team gave
up 26 points in the two other losses.
Enter Micah Parsons, sometimes a linebacker, sometimes a defensive end, sometimes
a blitzer anywhere across the line of scrimmage and both times during his two seasons
as a Pro Bowler and All-Pro.
“Man, I’m ready to take everybody to the deep water,’’ Parsons said of the next step this
defense must take. “Everybody comfortable with their knees in the water. I’m ready to
go out to the deep water. I hope everybody prepared to go into the deep water.
“I’m going to push you like that and I want to see how you’re going to be able to swim.
You know what I’m saying?’’Parsons didn’t stop there with his aquatic analogy.
“Man, you got to see if they can swim,” Parsons continued. “I’m gonna take them on an
island. You know what I’m saying. I’m taking them to the island. I’m going to push like
that, and I want to see how you able to swim.”And what we’re talking here is a defense
returning eight starters if we go back to the end of the season, and one that significantly
needs to improve against the run, having allowed at least 117 yards rushing in
11 of the 17 games, and at least 136 in all five losses, plus another 113 in the 19-12
playoff loss to San Francisco.
Yet this defense’s calling card has been takeaways, leading the NFL with 33 this past
season following their league-leading 34 the previous year, thus becoming the first
team to lead the NFL in takeaways during consecutive seasons since the Pittsburgh
Steelers from 1972-74.
But for these Cowboys, with McCarthy now calling the plays on offense and Brian
Schottenheimer his offensive right-hand man, this team knows resting on previous

laurels is no option. No one grandfathers
you into the playoffs again just because
of your previous appearances the past
two seasons.
“I’m just tired of like being second, tired
of coming up short,” Parsons said. “What
can I do every day to put myself in the best
position to say, ‘I can live with that, and so
far, I haven’t been able to live with the fact
of us losing 19-12, us losing that wildcard game
my rookie year.”
“I told this to the guys: ‘Is the price of discipline
worth a lifetime of regret?’ For me, it just don’t.
You only got so long, you only got this edge
for so long to get a real shot at this and I do
believe we really got a shot at this.”
So here they go, and as McCarthy said at
the outset of training camp, “If you want to
break that door down, you first got to be on
the front porch.”
Well, the Cowboys have been on the “porch.” Now it’s high
time for them all to go in.

In 2006, the Houston Texans made a pivotal decision that would have far-reaching
consequences for their franchise’s future. With the first pick in the second round
of the NFL Draft, they selected Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans, passing on
other promising linebackers D’Qwell Jackson and Rocky McIntosh. Then-head
coach Gary Kubiak expressed his surprise at Ryans’ availability and the Texans’
good fortune in landing him.
Fast forward to 2023, and DeMeco Ryans has come full circle. After a successful
NFL career and earning a spot as a beloved figure among Texans fans, Ryans
returned to Houston, not as a player, but as their head coach. Despite the team’s
recent struggles, Ryans saw potential in the organization and expressed a strong
desire to be back in “H-Town.”
The Texans’ recent history hadn’t been rosy, with a lackluster roster, quarterback
uncertainties, and a dysfunctional front office leading to disappointing seasons.
Nevertheless, Ryans’ hiring brought newfound hope to the franchise. His experience
as a Pro Bowl linebacker and his successful tenure as the defensive coordinator
for the San Francisco 49ers made him a compelling candidate for the
head coaching role.
The 2023 NFL Draft marked another critical turning point for the
Texans. They invested in their future by selecting quarterback
C.J. Stroud and pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. with their top-three
draft picks. While the cost to trade up for Anderson was steep,
the Texans believed in their picks and hoped they would lay the
foundation for a brighter future.
As the team moved forward, some analysts expressed cautious
optimism for the Texans. They acknowledged the signs of
improvement and believed in Ryans’ coaching abilities,
but also recognized that the team still had areas to
address before becoming a top contender.

The SEC won’t be alone in shifting the tectonic plates of college football in
2024. When Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC next year, UCLA and USC will
officially make a similarly-jarring move by jumping to the Big Ten.
It’s all happening as the Big Ten tries to challenge the SEC as college football’s
premier league. A new, seven-year, $7 billion television rights deal begins this
season and brings many of the conference’s games to NBC and, by proxy,
KTSM for some prime-time clashes.
Once again, Michigan and Ohio State figure to be in the mix as powerhouses
in the sport. The arch-rivals both qualified for the four-team College Football
Playoff in 2022 and Ohio State has played in 10 consecutive New Year’s Six
games.
The Buckeyes and Wolverines nearly met for the national title, too, but they
were knocked off in the semifinals in narrow defeats at the hands of Georgia
and TCU, respectively.
The Big Ten conversation has to start with those two, but Penn State is next in
line after an 11-2 2022 campaign that ended in a Rose Bowl win. The Nittany
Lions could be dark horse contenders once again in the brutal Big Ten East.
In the Big Ten West, Wisconsin has a new head coach in Luke Fickell, who will
try to bring the Badgers back to prominence with a new quarterback in SMU
transfer Tanner Mordecai. Iowa should once again have a stout defense, but
they must find more consistency offensively. Illinois, Maryland and Michigan
State all will hope to compete as well.
Michigan is Phil Steele’s pick to win the Big Ten this year behind the play of
quarterback JJ McCarthy and running back Blake Corum, who is a preseason
Heisman Trophy hopeful.
Don’t be surprised if the conference title once again comes down to the Ohio
State-Michigan showdown on Nov. 25, like it has each of the last two seasons.

Make no mistake: no one at UTEP felt good about how the Miners’ 2022 football season
played out. After a winning season in 2021 and a trip to the New Mexico Bowl, expectations
were high for UTEP in 2022. Instead, they fell flat, going 5-7 and missing out on a bowl game.
UTEP is now flying under the radar going into Dana Dimel’s sixth year in El Paso, just the way
the Miners like it in a new-look Conference USA. “We feel comfortable as an underdog, but
we also feel like we have a really good team coming back, a really athletic team. We’ve got
a tough schedule, but we’re looking forward to that,” Dimel said.
Offense
In order to succeed, UTEP needs a bounce-back year from quarterback Gavin Hardison in
his final season. After a stellar year in 2021, Hardison regressed in 2022, throwing for 2,044
yards, with a ho-hum 52.1 completion percentage.
Dimel has taken on a bigger role within the quarterbacks room this year, participating in
meetings with Hardison and first-year offensive coordinator Scotty Ohara. “I’m looking for
Gavin to have an outstanding season for us,” Dimel said. “I think being in the room more as
a play-caller is important.” With nine offensive starters back, Hardison will have plenty of
weapons. The running back room is stacked with veteran Deion Hankins (701 yards, three
touchdowns), junior college transfer Mike Franklin and multiple unproven talents, like Torrance
Burgess. Former Americas High School star Aaron Dumas also transferred to UTEP
from Washington, but will need an NCAA waiver to play in 2023.
The Miners brought in some talent at the wide receiver position, including UTSA transfer
Dre Spriggs to pair with returners Kelly Akharaiyi and Jeremiah Ballard. But UTEP’s biggest
acquisition of the offseason was getting leading receiver Tyrin Smith back.
Smith left for Texas A&M in January, but had second thoughts and returned to UTEP. The
Miners will gladly take his 71 catches for 1,039 yards and seven touchdowns from 2022. “I
truly wanted to be back with a team I bonded with from the beginning,” Smith said. “The ceiling
is high for this team to go out there and win it all. Everyone is bought in.”
UTEP’s offensive line might be its best unit, as it returns four starters. Dimel said the line
grades out as one of the best in college football. The Miners hope that veterans Steven
21
22 KTSM 9 / ULTIMATE FOOTBALL GUIDE | 2023 / KTSM.COM
Hubbard, Justin Mayers, Andrew Meyer and Elijah Klein can protect Hardison
so he can return to his 2021 form, plus open up holes for Hankins to have a true
breakout season.
Defense
Defensively, seven starters return, led by edge rusher Praise Amaewhule, leading
tackler Tyrice Knight at linebacker (95 tackles) and safety Kobe Hylton.
There’s more depth on UTEP’s defense than what the Miners have had in years
past, particularly up front as Amaewhule is joined by Keenan Stewart and others.
“I love the way we play together as a team. (Defensive coordinator) Bradley
Dale Peveto brings an energy to the team that makes it good to play for him,”
said Amaewhule. “You always love being the underdog, we like being doubted.”
Knight could’ve transferred to any school in the nation for his final season, but
chose to stay in El Paso for one final run at UTEP. He’ll be joined by James Neal
and Jerome Wilson in the linebacking corps. Hylton is back to lead the secondary
and could be an all-conference player. Cornerback Torey Richardson returns
after missing all of 2022 with a knee injury. New Mexico transfer AJ Odums and
Latrez Shelton will man the other cornerback spot, which McKel Broussard and
Josiah Allen round out the unit.
Special Teams
Buzz Flabiano and Mark Ramos will compete for the kicking role in fall camp to
replace Gavin Baechle, who graduated. Josh Sloan returns as the Miners’ punter
and Marcus Bellon will return kicks and punts, after housing a punt vs. Boise
State last year.
Outlook
“It would be a heck of an accomplishment to go to a bowl game two out of three
years. It would be only the second time in the history of the program, so there’s
a lot to play for,” Dimel said.
If UTEP can navigate a tough first six games and get more consistent play from
Hardison, a bowl game is surely in the cards. It’s possible the Miners could make
a run late in the season at a CUSA title.

In 2022, New Mexico State went from
underdogs to top dogs. The Aggies
started the season with four straight
losses, but ended the season with a 7-6
record and as Quick Lane Bowl champions
with a victory over Bowling Green.
The Aggies exceeded expectations in
every way in Jerry Kill’s first year as head
coach, winning just the second bowl
game in 60 years. Now, expectations
have been raised for the program as it
approaches its second year of the Kill
era in Las Cruces, and most importantly,
its first in Conference USA.
“The expectations are higher. I think
we recruited really well,” Kill said. “Going
into a new conference, every one
of them have good coaches, so I think
there’ll be a lot of close games and we’re
going to have to learn how to win the
close games.”
Offense
The Aggies return nine starters from
the 2022 squad, including senior quarterback
Diego Pavia. Pavia returns with
more confidence after he caught fire in
the back end of the season. The 2022
Quick Lane Bowl MVP started the last
five games of the season and collected
934 passing yards, 350 rushing yards,
and 14 total touchdowns to lead the
Aggies to a 4-1 record.
This year, Pavia is hungry for more success
on the offensive side of the ball
that returns a lot of familiar faces.
“It’s a new beginning and we’ve just got
more weapons on offense,” Pavia said.
“Really, it’s just building a chemistry
with them so it can help us offensively
and then from there get a feel of our
personnel and get ready for week one.”
Star Thomas (107 carries, 107 rushing
yards, 5 TD), Jamoni Jones (111 carries,
383 rushing yards, 6 TD), and Ahmonte
Watkins (39 carries, 248 rushing yards,
4 TD) make up the Aggies’ loaded running
back group.
Kordell David Jr. (343 receiving yards,
4 TD), and Jonathan Brady (23 receptions,
310 yards, 3 TD) will be the returnees
to watch at the wide receiver
position. Thomaz Whitford (12 receptions,
82 yards, 2 TD) returns for another
year at tight end.
Four starters, who combined for 51 career
starts, return to the offensive line.
Look out for transfers Jacob Golden
(Boise State) and Cedric Claiborne (Trinity
Valley CC, originally UTSA) as well
on the line.

Defense
Despite losing several key starters
like linebackers Trevor Brohard and
Chris Ojoh and defensive backs Bryce
Jackson and Syrus Dumas, Kill is still
confident the defense, led by defensive
coordinator Nate Dreiling, has a
chance to top what they did last year.
“We recruited very well on that side
of the ball. Secondary wise, defensive
line wise, we are going to be better,” Kill
said. “I look for us to exceed what we
did a year ago because we have more
actual talent on that side of the ball.”
The Aggies allowed just 336 yards
per game and 23.9 points per game
in 2022, but NMSU returns just four
starters in 2023. Headlining the returnees
is defensive back Andre Seldon
(44 total tackles, one interception,
four passes defended). New names to
look out for include linebacker Jamari
Buddin (Penn State transfer), defensive
backs Keonte Glinton (Wyoming
transfer) and Jordan Vincent (Eastern
Illinois transfer) and defensive tackle
Dion Wilson (Arizona transfer).
Special Teams
NMSU lost punter Josh Carlson (Arizona
State) to the transfer portal and added
Zach Haynes, a Southeast Missouri transfer,
to possibly fill Carlson’s spot. Ethan
Albertson, a redshirt senior, returns at the
kicker position. Albertson went 7-of-10
on field goals with his longest being 46
yards last year.
Outlook
2023 is set to be a big year for New
Mexico State. The program is coming
off a bowl victory and will compete in an
FBS conference for the first time since
2017. There will be an even bigger emphasis
on rivalry games against UTEP
as both universities are part of Conference
USA. This is the first time since 1961
and the days of the Border Conference
that NMSU and UTEP will be in the same
league. The Aggies head into 2023 with
a rejuvenated program that expects the
same, and possibly more, success for the
upcoming season.

Here come the Irish! With the
exception of some key players and
coaching staff... The Irish will have a
new face upstairs in the booth calling
plays for the offense with Tommy Rees
making the move to Alabama alongside
Nick Saban. Gerad Parker will take Rees’
place, after the move from tight ends
coach at Notre Dame in 2022, but is
no stranger to leading an offense with
a two-year stint as West Virginia’s offensive
coordinator. Many fans have
said they are not too concerned with the
decision Rees made to leave, including
legendary Notre Dame Heisman Trophy
winner Tim Brown, who said, “It‘s a great
day for Irish football considering how
predictable the offense looked” with
Rees at the helm.
Head Coach Marcus Freeman looks
to offset the loss of players Tyler Buchner
and Logan Diggs, with veteran
quarterback Sam Hartman transferring
from Wake Forest. He brings with him
a plethora of records, including the
second-most yards thrown in ACC history.
Hartman will look to show how
much he will be missed at Wake Forest
when the Demon Deacons head to South
Bend late in the season on November
18th. Hartman’s high-powered yardage
creates an air of excitement to all
the Golden Domers looking forward to
a season of high scoring games. It all
starts across the way in Dublin, Ireland
on August 26th, when the Irish take on
the Navy Midshipmen at Aviva Stadium.
Will the Irish have enough drive and
a tough enough schedule to make a
run for the College Football Playoff?
Coming off a 9 and 4 finish last season,
some would say that it is not likely that
they can compete with the powerhouse
SEC teams, but let’s not forget the end
of the season high point at the Gator
Bowl against South Carolina. With a
45-38 win, Notre Dame football showed
that they had not given up, and still
have the drive that we all yearned for

excellence. GO IRISH! Catch home

Texas A&M entered last season
ranked in the Top 10 of the Associated
Press poll, with hopes of
competing for a spot in the College
Football Playoff. The Aggies
got nowhere near that in Jimbo
Fisher’s fifth year in Aggieland.
A week two loss to Appalachian
State, plus a six-game midseason
losing streak doomed the Aggies
to a 5-7 record and forced big offseason
changes. Fisher hired former
Louisville head coach Bobby
Petrino as Texas A&M’s new offensive
coordinator.
The hope is that the man who
helped turned Lamar Jackson into
a Heisman Trophy winner can inject
some life into an A&M offense
that put up just 22.8 points per
game last year.
Conner Weigman will likely grab
the reins at quarterback. A former
five-star recruit, Weigman played
in five games as a true freshman
in 2022, completing 55 percent of
his passes for 896 yards and eight
touchdowns, without throwing an
interception.
The wide receiver spot is stacked.
Former five-star recruit Evan
Stewart returns, as does Ainias
Smith, a star who missed eight
games due to injury last year. At
running back, Devon Achane left
for the NFL, leaving Amari Daniels
and Le’Veon Moss in the backfield
to try to carry the load.
Defensively, the Aggies were
demons against the pass under
first-year defensive coordinator
D.J. Durkin, but ranked among the
seven worst rush defenses in the
country.
Safety Demani Richardson is the
defensive leader, but it’s the defensive
line that might be the most
talented unit. A&M returns McKinnley
Jackson and Walter Nolen
and five-star freshman DJ Hicks
arrived in the offseason after flipping
from Oklahoma.
Five of Texas A&M’s first six games
will be played at Kyle Field, before
things ratchet up in a hurry when
Alabama comes to College Station
on Oct. 7. If the Aggies can
flip their bad luck in close games
from last year to good luck, plus
improve offensively, eight or nine
wins could be in the cards.

By Colin Deaver
Not much was expected of Texas Tech in
its first season under head coach Joey
McGuire, so naturally the Red Raiders
surprised everyone in 2022 in Lubbock.
Texas Tech went 8-5 in McGuire’s rookie
season, with overtime wins over Houston,
Texas and Oklahoma, then a victory over
Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl.
The Red Raiders won’t be sneaking up on
anyone in 2023. Picked to finish fourth
in the preseason Big 12 media poll, Tech
could be a dark horse to win the conference
title this fall in the new-look 14-team
league.
There’s plenty of reason for optimism, as
the Red Raiders bring back a lot from what
was a top-25 offense a season ago. Tech
returns two quarterbacks with starting
experience in Tyler Shough and Behren
Morton, both of whom excelled at times
in a pass-happy offense engineered by
offensive coordinator Zach Kittley. They’ll
fight for the starting job in fall camp.
Wide receivers Jerand Bradley (51 receptions,
744 yards, six touchdowns),
Myles Price and Xavier all return as well.
Parkland graduate DJ Crest hopes to
factor into the receiving corps as a
true freshman, too. Running back Tahj
Brooks is back after leading the team
in rushing the last two seasons.
Defensively, Texas Tech returns eight
starters from the bowl win over Ole Miss,
but will have to replace first round draft
pick in edge rusher Tyree Wilson and
2022’s leading tacklers, Krishon Merriweather
and Kosi Eldridge. It’s a tough
task, but with the return of interior linemen
Tony Bradford and Jaylon Hutchings,
Texas Tech has a good starting
point.
The Red Raiders can make a statement
in week two at home when Oregon
comes to Lubbock, likely as a
top-15 team. If Texas Tech knocks off
the Ducks, it could be the start of a
special season.

By Colin Deaver
In its final season in the Big 12 before
Texas jets off to the SEC with Oklahoma,
expectations are sky-high for
Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns.
For the first time in awhile, it appears
UT might be up to the task.
Texas will head into the new-look,
14-team Big 12 as the favorite to win
the conference, after going 8-5 with
an Alamo Bowl loss to Washington
in 2022.
Offensively, the Longhorns bring
back sophomore quarterback Quinn
Ewers, who started 10 games in
2022 and emerged from spring
football as the clear-cut starter over
Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning.
They also bring back all five starters
on the offensive line.
Ewers threw for over 2,000 yards
and 15 touchdowns in his first action
at UT and although he lost Doak
Walker Award-winning running back
Bijan Robinson to the first round of
the NFL Draft, the cupboard is by no
means bare.
Jonathon Brooks is expected to take
over for Robinson in the backfield
after accounting for six total touchdowns
in 2022. At wide receiver,
Jordan Whittington returns once
again and will be joined by a talented
flock of pass catchers, including
2022’s leading receiver Xavier
Worthy (60 receptions, 760 yards,
nine TD) and Georgia transfer Adonai
Mitchell.
Mitchell was a part of Georgia’s
back-to-back national championships
in 2021 and 2022, catching
seven touchdowns in his time with
the Bulldogs.
Defensively, Texas was better in
2022, lowering its points allowed
totals by almost 10 points to 21.6
per game. Middle linebacker Jaylan
Ford is back to lead the way, as is
the entire defensive coaching staff.
The defensive line and secondary
each return a pair of starters, respectively.
There’s optimism that the
unit can improve even more in 2023.
In the Longhorns’ final year in the
Big 12, the entire league will be gunning
for them. Now, it’s up to them
to deliver.

38 KTSM 9 / ULTIMATE FOOTBALL GUIDE | 2023 / KTSM.COM
By Ed Stansbury
Three decades ago, the idea of cre
ating an All-Star game to give more
exposure to El Paso County High
School Football players was introduced
by our founding director Mr.
Ed Fifer. Fast forward to now, we are
excited to kick off the celebration of
the 31st year of the Greater El Paso
Football Showcase.
First, I would like to congratulate our
Executive Director, Rick Hernandez,
who was inducted into the El Paso
Athletic Hall of Fame this summer.
Rick has always been about youth
athletes in the Sun City and his induction
was well-deserved.
Over the last 31 years, the Greater
El Paso Football Showcase has seen
thousands of players representing
the best of El Paso high school football
play one last time in front of their
hometown crowd. Names like Paul
Smith (Andress, 9-year NFL Veteran),
Brian Young (Andress, 8-year NFL
Veteran), current college stars like
Jeremiah Cooper (Iowa State), and of
course, current NFL superstar Aaron
Jones (Burges, Green Bay) have all
come through the All-Star Game.
ed stansbury
The celebration will kick off with a
press conference in September to officially
announce all the festivities like
the Draft, Pre-game tailgate, All-star
Alumni Social, All-star palooza, and
halftime performer planned for the
big game on Dec. 16 at the Socorro
ISD Athletic Complex.
The Greater El Paso Football Showcase
has grown over the last three
decades to represent not just football
players, but everyone involved in
a Friday night football game. Band,
Cheer, Dance, Sports Media, Choir,
JROTC, Dance, Mascots and Athletic
Trainers have all been included, and
all have opportunities to continue
their education with scholarships
given out by the Showcase.
Last year, we awarded the most single-year
scholarship money that we
ever have: $40,000. Overall to date,
we have awarded over $640,000 in
scholarships. We ask that any GEPFS
alumni register on our website www.
geps.org to get up-to-date announcements
and alumni giveaways.
We are in for a great football season
and look forward to covering all the
players and teams here in El Paso on
9 Overtime.
