IN THIS ISSUE...
Finally! The mask ban has been lifted and there’s football in the air….SO, ARE YOU READY
FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!! We are and thank goodness! It could not come any sooner. KTSM
9 aired this year’s Super Bowl and wow! What a great game with the LA Rams edging out
the surprising Cincinnati Bengals. This was the most viewed Super Bowl in El Paso history!
Sunday Night Football will once again feature the top games of the week. Check the latest
edition of the Ultimate Football Guide for the entire NFL schedule on KTSM.com. UFG will
feature both UTEP and NMSU teams and schedules with great insight from our Sports Team
of Colin Deaver and Sammy Guzman. UTEP shocked everyone last year with their first bowl
appearance in decades. NMSU found themselves rebuilding once again. But that all goes
out the window with the Battle of I-10. The UTEP-NMSU rivalry is legendary and looks to be
a real barn burner this year, once again.

High School football has become one of the most entertaining sporting events in El Paso.
Some of the things these young athletes do on the field are spectacular and I am sure if you
are a football fan or have someone you know that plays for one of our area High Schools
that you will be in the stands as well. This year’s Ultimate Football Guide marks the14th year
that we have produced the magazine and the third year that it has been a great digital asset.
Thanks to all our loyal viewers, we can once again bring you the best in football. In 2022
we will once again showcase the KTSM Fine 9 which are the top 9 players in High School
Football. The Ultimate Football Guide has all the schedules of your favorite teams as well as
interviews with some of the best athletes in the Borderland. The Ultimate Football guide is
your go to guide for football.
We know that Sunday Night Football will once again be the most viewed program on TV.
We will resume our coverage with the kickoff game of the LA Rams and the Buffalo Bills on
September 11. I think we all believe that Buffalo probably should have been in the Super Bowl
but that is how the ball bounced.Buffalo is the preseason favorite to take it all this year. My
sleeper team is the Chargers. But wait: Tom Brady is back again with a loaded team again
so who knows what is going to happen?
Please, enjoy the 2022 14th edition of the Ultimate Football Guide and we look forward to
another great season of Sunday Night Football only on KTSM 9.
Yours truly,
David Candelaria

NBC Sunday Night Football, America’s No. 1 primetime television show for an unprecedented
11 consecutive years, is the home to the best and the brightest in 2022:
from Matthew Stafford and the Rams raising their Super Bowl banner at SoFi Stadium
before hosting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in NFL Kickoff 2022, to Tom Brady
and Patrick Mahomes facing off for the sixth time (Week 4), to the pressure-packed
season finale in Week 18 (see: unforgettable 2021 Chargers-Raiders OT #Game272).
Then it’s on to the postseason, where NBC Sports will showcase three games across
the first two weekends of the NFL Playoffs.
Peacock will stream all NBC Sunday Night Football games, including the playoffs,
and the Football Night in America studio show. The exclusive Peacock Sunday Night
Football Final returns with expanded postgame coverage following SNF each week.
This season’s SNF schedule is jam-packed with the league’s star signal callers: 15
regular-season games in the SNF package feature at least one quarterback to start
in a Super Bowl.
All 2021 NFL playoff teams are on the NBC SNF schedule, including three games
each for the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys, NFC North champion Green Bay
Packers, AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs, and NFC South champion Tampa
Bay Buccaneers.
The new SNF announce team of Mike Tirico, Cris Collinsworth, and Melissa Stark
will work its first game together at the Hall of Fame Game in primetime on Thursday,
Aug. 4 on NBC and Peacock.

OXNARD, Calif.
The Dallas Cowboys finished 12-5 during the 2021 NFL season, tying for the second-best
record behind just 13-4 Green Bay and Tampa Bay.The Cowboys won the NFC East title
for the 21st time since formed in 1970 and the 25th division crown in the franchise’s
62nd season. Philadelphia’s 11 East titles rank second, an indication of the Cowboys
overall dominance.
The Cowboys also went undefeated in the East this past season, sweeping the home and
away games with Philadelphia, Washington and the New York Giants, only the third time
in club history they have finished with a perfect record (1969 and 1998).
And this Cowboys team in 2022 will be trying to do what no NFC East team has done
since 2004: Win consecutive NFC East Division titles, last accomplished by the Eagles,
winning four straight from 2001-04. That’s 14 years ago.Not bad.
And when Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about his expectations for this 2022
team during the team’s training camp opening press conference on July 26 in Oxnard,
Calif., he was unequivocal with this response:“We have a criticism this year – we won 12
games last year. I have to, I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t get a little bit of feel-good
out of those 12 games. I understand where our fans are, and they should understand
where I am. That’s not enough. But it’s enough to go again.“I need to win it. I need to
win it . . . we need to be in the playoffs We need to be viable in the playoffs to be a successful
season.”
And this, though, is quite strange after turning a 6-10 team in 2020 during head coach
Mike McCarthy’s first season into that 12-5 the following season, knowing they don’t
grandfather you into the playoffs the next season after putting up sparkling numbers
during the previous one:
4 KTSM 9 / ULTIMATE FOOTBALL GUIDE | 2022 / KTSM.COM
The Cowboys will be attempting this repeat without several
of their top players from 2021, namely wide receiver Amari
Cooper, considered their No. 1 receiver over the past 3½
seasons. Without starting right defensive end Randy Gregory,
second on the team last year with six sacks and his 30
pressures third. And without La’el Collins, starter at right
tackle for four of the past five seasons, having missed all
of 2020 having hip surgery.
They will go forward without several other starters, too,
including starting left guard Connor Williams, starting free
safety Demontae Kazee and kicker Greg Zuerlein. And don’t
forget losing wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, the team’s valuable
Swiss Army knife.
Plus, there is a good chance the Cowboys will be without
presumed No. 2 receiver Michal Gallup for the first month
of the season, still recovering from postseason ACL surgery.
Whatever will they do to make ends meet?
“We feel really good about our young group,” says COO
Stephen Jones, also executive vice president of player
personnel, the man calling the day-to-day shots over roster
decisions. “We feel like at the end of the day they are ready
to take the next step just like we had confidence in Zack
martin and Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick when they
walked in the door. We plugged them in and they played
and played well.”
And these young guys had better be ready to take the next

step because heading into training camp the Cowboys were significantly counting
on several of them to take full advantage of their opportunity to help improve
this team. To help compensate for the loss off those veterans, all premeditated
decisions the Cowboys made, trading away Cooper, releasing Collins outright
and not being able to re-sign Gregory.
Those decisions we made are more about availability than ability, Jerry Jones
said. That means a guy like CeeDee Lamb must take that next step up to the
No. 1 receiver spot, moving into the flanker role from his usual slot spot, not
only attracting more opportunities but also more coverage.
That means until Gallup returns, all eyes on the wide receiver position will focus
on free-agent James Washington, who spent his past four seasons at Pittsburgh
after a highly successful career at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys also
are counting on third-round pick Jalen Tolbert to assume the third receiver role.
Then there is the offensive line shuffle. The Cowboys were so impressed with
Terence Steele’s performance in 2021 at right tackle that they didn’t hesitate
to move Collins and his significant salary cap hit. They also are counting on
the winner of the left guard competition between first-round draft choice Tyler
Smith and fourth-year lineman Connor McGovern to compensate for the loss
of Connor Williams.
Then there is the assumed progression of center Tyler Biadasz and hoping
beyond hope perennial Pro Bowl tackle Tyron Smith can remain healthy.
And as for the defensive end position vacated by Gregory, first and foremost the
Cowboys are counting on veteran and former sack leader DeMarcus Lawrence
to play more than the seven games he did in the injury-riddled 2021 season.
After that, it’s about those young guys stepping up, players such as Dorance
Armstrong, Dante Fowler Jr. and second-round draft choice Sam Williams.
Oh, and how about kicker? The Cowboys are panning for gold with rookie Jonathan
Garibay and CFL veteran Lirim Hajrullahu, having kicked in just the three
games last year during his NFL rookie season. That’s how they were going into
training camp at that vital position.
A whole lot of question marks, though Stephen Jones says, “I look at it not as
question marks but opportunity for skill players.”

But sort of the equalizers to these questions are these exclamation points
for sure:Quarterback Dak Prescott is back for his seventh season, healthy
and able to work full-go during the offseason instead of his
recovery mode of last year following a season-ending ankle
injury in Game 5 of 2020. Running back Ezekiel Elliott is
healthy, looking sharp in those offseason workouts. Throw
Tony Pollard into that category, too.
And back again for a second season and proving to be last
year’s most significant offseason move, defensive
coordinator Dan Quinn, who turned one of the
NFL’s worst defenses in 2020 into a somewhat
strong point for the Cowboys in 2021, leading
the league in takeaways with 34 takeaways,
26 of those an NFL-high 26 interceptions. And
remember the guy owning 11 of those interceptions,
cornerback Trevon Diggs, will be entering
the season with two years of experience.
“The youth of our football team will factor the
early part of the season,” McCarthy said.
A mighty unconventional way to improve on
an improved team from last year, and trying
to bust up this NFC East 14-year streak of
one-and-done champions.

HOUSTON
TEXANS
The Texans won just four games for the second straight season after winning the
AFC South the previous two seasons, costing coach David Culley his job after just
one year. With QB Deshaun Watson sitting out amid a trade request and multiple
lawsuits from women alleging sexual harassment or assault, the Texans relied
on Tyrod Taylor early before giving rookie Davis Mills a chance at quarterback.
Ineffective play at quarterback paired with a defense that ranked near the bottom
of the NFL in the first season without star J.J. Watt left the Texans as one of the
league’s worst teams.
IMPORTANT ADDITIONS: Coach Lovie Smith, DB Derek Stingley, Jr., OL Kenyon
Green, WR John Metchie III, DB Jalen Pitre, RB Dameon Pierce, RB Marlon Mack,
QB Kyle Allen, LB Christian Harris, LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin, WR Chris Conley, DE
Jerry Hughes, CB Steven Nelson, DE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, DE Rasheem Green,
RG A.J. Cann, LB Blake Cashman.
IMPORTANT LOSSES: Watson, S Justin Reid, CB Lonnie Johnson, Jr., RB David
Johnson, TE Jordan Akins, DE Jacob Martin, QB Tyrod Taylor, CB Terrance
Mitchell, S A.J. Moore.
Now that Watson has been traded to Cleveland, the Texans are focused
on developing Mills. Houston has committed to him as the starter for
this season, but he’ll need to show that he’s made progress in camp after
a subpar rookie season. Metchie, a second-round pick, could help Mills
in his second season, but must show that he’s healthy after
offseason knee surgery. The Texans expect Stingley, the
third overall pick in the draft, to step in immediately to
improve their secondary, which makes his work in camp
particularly important.

JONES
As he prepares to enter his sixth season in the NFL, El Paso native Aaron Jones looks to
keep developing his game while playing a vital role in the Green Bay Packers ambitions to
win a Super Bowl.
“Every year we chase greatness,” said Jones. “That is our main goal here: to bring a championship
home, so that is where we have our mindset on.”
Jones aims to return to Pro Bowl form after missing out on rushing for 1,000 yards last
season; he eclipsed that number in 2019 and 2020. His goal in training camp was to keep
getting better.
“I continue to work on every phase, just trying to stay well-rounded and evolve in every
category,” said Jones. “I felt like I had a good game so I just continue to build upon that,
not necessarily pick up something completely new, but just build on my toolset.”
The Packers’ running game will be one to watch as Jones will form a one-two punch combo
with A.J. Dillon this season. The duo of Jones and Dillion combined to rush for 1,602 yards,
collect 704 receiving yards, and score 17 total touchdowns. The opportunity to share the
backfield with Dillion is one Jones is extremely excited about.
“I feel like we are a good one-two punch. He can do everything I can do and I can do everything
he can do,” said Jones. “We have been on the field together before. Same thing
as me and Jamaal [Williams] so it is always fun when we can get two backs on the field
at the same time.”
Jones and the Green Bay Packers open their regular season against the Minnesota Vikings
at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sept. 11.

dumas
One of the best players in El Paso during his time at Americas High School, former Trail
Blazers’ star running back Aaron Dumas proved in his first year of college at New Mexico
that he could do it at the next level, too.
Dumas was the leading rusher on the Lobos’ 3-9 squad in 2021, after entering the
season as the back-up. His 658 yards and two touchdowns were far and away the best
on the team.
But after one standout season at New Mexico, Dumas announced back in January that
he was transferring to the University of Washington, a Pac-12 program that has a rich
history. Dumas will likely be immediately eligible in 2022 after enrolling for the spring
term back in April in Seattle.
Dumas is one of seven running backs that will be battling for time at Washington, but
his track record should help him have a good chance at earning playing time.
“I think one thing they want to take advantage of is my versatility and skillset that I
didn’t get to show at all (at UNM),” Dumas said. “Put me in space catching the ball, fly
sweeps and stuff like that.”
His best game of the season in 2021 came in New Mexico’s second-to-last game, a
34-7 road loss at Fresno State. In that contest, Dumas carried 23 times for 143 yards
and a touchdown; he also had his longest carry of the season in that game of 63 yards.
That game may have proved pivotal to Dumas getting his spot at Washington. New
Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer was at Fresno State in 2021 and not only watched
Dumas run wild in that game, but offered him a scholarship with the Bulldogs when he
was three-star recruit at Americas.
It didn’t work out for Dumas and DeBoer to work together then, but it has now. He’s
ready to ball out for the Huskies, take advantage of some better NIL opportunities and
perhaps one day follow in the footsteps of another El Paso running back with the same
first name: Green Bay Packers star, Aaron Jones.

UTEP
Colin Deaver
To whom much is given – or in this case, to whom much is earned – much is expected.
After a 7-6 finish and a trip to the New Mexico Bowl in 2021 (a 31-24 loss to Fresno State),
the UTEP Miners go into year five under head coach Dana Dimel with as high of expectations
as they’ve had in over half-a-decade.
Dimel and UTEP are completely fine with that; the man who took over an 0-12 squad ahead
of the 2018 season has rebuilt the program from scratch, earning himself a two-year contract
extension in the offseason.
“We should always expect to win now, that’s the big thing. We just take it one game at a time
right now,” Dimel said. “We start the season with a really tough seven-game stretch, so
as we look back at a great season last year, we want to build, but it starts with game one.”
The Miners will open the 2022 season in Week 1 at home against Conference USA foe, North
Texas in front of what could be a packed Sun Bowl Stadium. UTEP graduated only 11 players
from 2021’s bunch and while they also lost top receiver Jacob Cowing to Arizona in the
transfer portal, this is arguably the most talented and experienced Miners team in years.
Offense
Leading the Miners’ offensive charge will be redshirt junior quarterback, Gavin Hardison, now
entering his third year as UTEP’s starter. An All-Conference USA Honorable Mention choice
a year ago, Hardison threw for 3,217 yards, 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2021.
But the bowl game defeat left a bad taste in his mouth; Hardison’s fumble late in the fourth
quarter vs. Fresno State ended a promising Miners drive that could’ve tied the game. It’s
motivated him all offseason.

“I’ve had a lot of goals that I’ve accomplished this offseason and taking care of the ball is
one of them. It’s an extremely motivating scene, what happened the last time we played and
we’re excited to get out here for week 1,” said Hardison.
Even without Cowing, Hardison will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Tyrin Smith (33
receptions, 570 yards, 4 TD) is the top returning receiver and Ysleta graduate Rey Flores is
also back. The Miners also added junior college transfer Kelly Akharaiyi, a big target who
looked great in spring practices.
At running back, UTEP will have options again with Ronald Awatt (844 yards, 6 TD) and Deion
Hankins (458 yards, 6 TD) returning. Look for JuCo transfer Torrance Burgess to factor in as
well as both a running back and slot receiver.
UTEP lost two starters on the offensive line, but don’t expect a big drop off. The five projected
2022 starters all rotated in frequently last season.
Defense
UTEP’s best unit will be its defense for a second straight year, specifically the defensive line
where the Miners return all four starters from a 2021 D-Line that was destructive. Defensive
ends Praise Amaewhule and Jadrian Taylor were dominant at times and Keenan Stewart and
Kelton Moss were fantastic plugging holes in the middle of the line.
“We’re expecting a lot out of our defense this year,” Dimel said. “We added a lot more depth
and a lot of talent and depth to the defense, that’ll be one of our strengths of our defense
is our depth.”
The Miners could return their entire front-six, if linebacker Breon Hayward is granted a waiver
for a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA. Hayward led the Miners in tackles in 2021 (108)
and teamed with Tyrice Knight (102 tackles) in defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto’s
revamped 4-2-5 scheme.
The secondary is the question mark entering 2022. While UTEP returns nickelback Dennis
Barnes and free safety Justin Prince, they lost the other three 2021 starters. There are pieces
that can fill in, including Torey Richardson, who led the team with eight pass breakups, as
well as Louisiana transfer Kobe Hylton.
Special Teams
Gavin Baechle is in his third season as the Miners’ placekicker, going 18-24 on field goals
last year. Josh Sloan is also back for his third season as the UTEP punter. The Miners didn’t
get much from their returners a year ago and will look to change that in 2022.
Outlook
UTEP took advantage of a favorable schedule to open 2021, getting out to a 6-1 start. The
schedule is a bit tougher in 2022, but with the most talented roster Dimel has had at UTEP
and experience on its side, there’s no reason the Miners can’t return to a bowl game for a
second year in a row and finish with their most wins since 2005.

GUZMAN
It’s the beginning of a new era of New Mexico
State football.
After nine seasons of Doug Martin leading the
Aggies, Jerry Kill will now get the keys to the
program in 2022.
“I am excited about it. You know things did not
end the way I liked to because of the health
situation as a head coach,” said Kill. “Getting
back here, getting the opportunity, working
with Mario [Moccia] before and as soon as I
got in, he flew me in at night. I looked at the
mountains, the sunshine, and I said now we
have to build a football team.”
This will be Kill’s first full-time head coach
position since 2015 after epileptic seizures
caused him to step down at Minnesota. According
to Kill, he has been seizure-free for
four years.
His impact on changing the program culture
is already being felt.
“I am very excited about this season,” New
Mexico State senior linebacker Trevor Brohard
said. “Guys are putting in a lot of time and
effort which is completely different from the
past.”
Offense
It’s another year, another quarterback co petition.
Weston Eget, Dino Maldonado, Diego
Pavia, Gavin Frakes, and Jeff Davison will
battle it out for the starting spot. Kill said that
24 KTSM 9 / ULTIMATE FOOTBALL GUIDE | 2022 / KTSM.COM
Pavia, a junior college transfer, had the edge
coming out of the spring camp, but don’t be
surprised to see a few different players get
an opportunity.
There is great depth at the running back
position. TheAggies return O’Maury Samuels
and added TCU transfer Ahmonte Watkins
and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M transfer
Jamoni Jones. Watkins, initially recruited to
play cornerback at TCU, looks to show why
he can be a great offensive player for the
Aggies. Meanwhile, Jones comes in seeking
the lead role he had at Northeastern
Oklahoma A&M. He led the team in rushing
yards (487) and touchdowns (11) last season.
At wide receiver, the Aggies lost three of
their top players from last season in Jared
Wyatt, Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda, and Andre
Bodison. Despite the departures, Kill believes
he’s got a talented group with Terell Warner
and Dominic Gicinto Jr. returning and the
additions of JuCo transfers Kordell David
(Trinity Valley CC) and Justice Powers (West
Los Angeles College).
“We’ve got to be a team that controls the
football,” said Kill. “I think people will be
surprised. Athletically, we are very talented
at receiver, talented at running back, and
talented at tight end.”
Defense
Nine starters from last season’s team return
this year, which gives the Aggies a good shot
at being a strong defensive team.
“You win on defense,” said Kill. “Everybody
talks about offense, but you win on defense.”
The defensive line will return six of their top
seven linemen from 2021. Some names to
rembember are senior Donavan King who
had 2.5 sacks along with 34 tackles last year.
Senior Lazarus Williams collected 3.0 sacks
and 18 tackles. Junior Izaiah Reed, a transfer
from Murray State, is one of the new additions.
Reed totaled 22 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the
Racers. Throw in Chapin graduate Lama Lavea
and this could be the best defensive line the
Aggies have had in recent years.
Anchoring the defense will be the linebacker
duo of Chris Ojoh and Trevor Brohard. The two
were named to Phi l Steele’s All-Independent
Preseason Team after their stellar play last
season. They hope to help their defense become
one to be reckoned with this season.
“I’m expecting when other coaches put on the
tape, and they are watching our defense, I want
them to see 11 guys flying to the football,” said
Brohard. “I want them to see 11 red or black
jerseys around the football every single play,
guys hustling, giving all they’ve got.”
Special teams
The Aggies should be solid on special teams.
Junior kicker Ethan Albertson, a Phill Steele’s
All-Independent Preseason Team selection, returns
to the Aggies. Albertson went 17-22 on
field goal attempts and 28-30 on point-after
attempts in 2021.
Outlook
The beginning of the Jerry Kill era presents New
Mexico State football a chance for change. A
program that has not finished a season over
.500 since 2017, which was also the last bowl
game appearance for the Aggies, will look to
do everything they can to win games as they
prepare to head into Conference USA in 2023.

notre dame
The Marcus Freeman era in South Bend began with
great reception, only to be followed up with a very
disappointing loss to Oklahoma St. in the Fiesta
Bowl. Freeman will obviously get some leeway,
however, it will be a very tough act to follow in the
shadow of Brian Kelly, who left for the riches of LSU,
after cementing his place in Notre Dame lore as the
winningest head coach in program history, passing
Knute Rockne last year. Needless to say, Freeman
will be under a microscope from day one; yet the
Notre Dame faithful seem to have been ready for
a change from Kelly, who never delivered in the
big games, especially in bowl games.
The Irish need to be ready from the start, as their
first game is a primetime visit to Columbus to take
on the Ohio St. Buckeyes. Even though the Irish are
ranked #7 in the pre-season, Ohio St. is #2 and
is already a two-touchdown favorite in this game.
The rest of the 12-game schedule looks as tough
as always with highlight games at N. Carolina, v.
BYU in Las Vegas for the Shamrock Series, Stanford,
and Clemson at home with a regular season finale
trip to visit USC.
The Irish get a new defensive coordinator after the
Freeman promotion. Al Golden has experience as
the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes as well as
NFL experience as an assistant with the Cincinnati
Bengals. Defensive End Isaiah Foskey is an NFL 1st
round projection that can put pressure on any opposing
QB and Defensive Tackle Jayson Ademilola
can help his defense by commanding double teams
in the interior. Linebacker Marist Liufau was out
all of last year with a broken leg and is expected
alex dupont
to be the anchor of a very talented front seven.
The secondary took a hit with the departure of
All-American and 1st round pick Kyle Hamilton.
The good news is that he will be replaced by
Northwestern transfer and All-Big Ten performer
Brandon Joseph. Another secondary player to
watch will be Ramon Henderson, as he brings
speed and size to this unit.
QB Tyler Buchner is expected to be the starter after
the departure of Jack Coan to the NFL. Buchner
saw some playing time last year and provides a
good run-pass option in the position. The strength
of the offense will be the line with Jarrett Patterson
at center and Blake Fisher already looking like
a 1st round pick. Chris Tyree will be the starting
RB with a great backup in Logan Diggs. The best
player on the roster, by far, will be All-American
TE Michael Mayer. Mayer is projected to be a
top 10 draft pick and has been compared to Rob
Gronkowski for his uncanny playmaking ability
and highlight reel catches.
The Outlook
Notre Dame remains true to their strength with
both the offensive and defensive lines leading the
way. How the players react under pressure to the
new head coaching style will be decisive on how
good or bad the season goes for the Irish. There
will be some speedbumps along the way, but on
paper, this is still a top 10 team no matter who
the coach is. An 11-1 season is very possible,
but not likely. Irish fans will be happy with 9 or
10 wins plus a trip to a prestigious bowl game in
this transition year.

2022 SCHEDULE
travis brown
Bryan-College Station Eagle
The offseason has been anything but quiet
for Jimbo Fisher and his Texas A&M Aggies.
Between singing the highest-rated recruiting
class in recent history and a name, image
and likeness verbal spat with Alabama
head coach Nick Saban, the Aggies have
continued to raise expectations for Fisher’s
fifth season in Aggieland.
Now, a disappointing 8-4 season removed
from the Aggies’ Orange Bowl win over
North Carolina, the pressure is on Fisher to
push the Aggies into the College Football
Playoff picture.
Several members of the record-breaking
No. 1 2022 class figure to factor heavily
in their first season in Aggieland, headlined
by wide receiver Evan Stewart. The
6-foot, 175-pound five-star ended the Aggies’
spring camp as the offensive MVP.
Stewart caught seven passes for 75 yards
in A&M’s spring game.
The nation’s No. 2 recruit, freshman defensive
tackle Walter Nolan, should also play
a prominent role on first-year defensive
coordinator DJ Durkin’s side of the ball.
For the second straight season, Fisher has
a quarterback competition heading into fall
camp between returning starter Haynes
King and LSU transfer Max Johnson. King
earned the starting nod out of last season’s
fall camp, but was lost for the season with
a broken leg suffered in the Aggies’ second
game of the season against Colorado.
Backup Zach Calzada, who led the Aggies
for the majority of last season, has since
transferred to Auburn.
Johnson completed 225 of 373 passes for
2,815 yards and 27 passing touchdowns for
the Tigers. He also threw six interceptions.
Speedster Devon Achane returns to headline
the Aggie backfield, who finished first
in the country in yards per carry at 7. The
two-sport track sprinter also led the Aggies
in rushing touchdowns with nine.
The strength of A&M’s returning squad is
its defensive secondary, featuring safeties
Demani Richardson and Antonio Johnson
as well as cornerbacks Myles Jones and
Jaylen Jones. A&M finished las season 17th
in the country in passing yards allowed
(192.7) and 10th in team passing efficiency
defense (112.0).
After Saban accused the Aggies of buying
their recruiting class with NIL deals, and
Fisher fired back by calling Saban a “narcissist”
among other barbs, all eyes will
be on A&M’s trip to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 8.
A&M also has key SEC matchups against
Arkansas on Sept. 24 at AT&T Stadium and
against Florida on Nov. 9 in College Station.
A&M’s season begins on Sept. 3 against
Sam Houston leading up to a nonconference
pinnacle in hosting Miami on Sept. 17.

2022 SCHEDULE
Colin Deaver
Despite coming off a win over Mississippi State
in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the unknown
swirls around Texas Tech entering 2022. New
head coach Joey McGuire has infused the fanbase
with energy, after Matt Wells was fired
before the end of the 2021 campaign. McGuire
has brought in what appears to be a solid coaching
staff in defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter
(from Oregon) and up-and-coming offensive
coordinator Zach Kittley (Western Kentucky),
who helped Bailey Zappe break records with
the Hilltoppers.
Recruiting has also been a big hit under the
first-time head coach McGuire; at one point
this summer, Tech had the second-best 2023
recruiting class in the nation. None of that will
help the Red Raiders win football games, though,
so McGuire will have to roll up his sleeve.
Quarterbacks Tyler Shough and Donovan Smith
return after both played in spurts in 2021 and,
along with Behren Morton, will compete for the
starting job. SaRodorick Thompson and Tahj
Brooks are back to lead the running game; while
Tech lost its top two receivers, Kittley’s fastpaced,
pass-happy offense should easily allow
some new pass-catchers to fill in quickly.
Defensively, Texas Tech was better in 2021
than it had been in any year going back as
far as 2015. The Red Raiders allowed “only”
406 yards per game and just 30.2 points per
game. They return six players from that unit
and DeRuyter was known for a tough-nosed
defense at Oregon. Things could improve in
2022.
Texas Tech has not had a winning season in
Big 12 play in over a decade (30-59 the past
10 seasons). Picked to finish 9th in the Big
12 preseason poll, not much is expected of
the Red Raiders in year one under McGuire.
There’s plenty of variability in potential outcomes;
don’t be surprised if Tech makes a
bowl game. Conversely, don’t be surprised if
they flounder, either.

2022 SCHEDULE
Colin Deaver
Steve Sarkisian was hired to be the head
coach at Texas to clean up after Tom Herman
was fired in 2020. Instead, he made an even
bigger mess.
The Longhorns stumbled to a 5-7 2021 campaign
that included an embarrassing loss to
Kansas at home. Given that, Sarkisian is already
under considerable pressure to perform
in his second season in charge.
Picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 preseason
poll, there are some pieces in place that could
help Texas be much-improved in 2022. 14
starters return – seven on each side of the
ball – including standout running back Bijan
Robinson (1,127 yards, 11 TD), one of the nation’s
best. Wide receivers Xavier Worthy and
Jordan Whittington give Texas some proven
threats on the outside.
The biggest question entering fall camp, is
whether or not former five-star quarterback
Quinn Ewers – an Ohio State transfer with
all of his eligibility remaining – will win the
starting job. It’s been rumored that Ewers is
the favorite to do so, but Hudson Card and
Maalik Murphy will compete with him for it.
If Ewers win the job and excels, he could be
the major difference maker.
Elsewhere, Texas must shore up its offensive
line and its entire defense, a unit that was
third-worst in the Big 12. Four of 2021’s top
five leading tacklers return, including linebacker
DeMarvion Overshown. Given the talent
coming back and another year in the system,
it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the
defense could be better.
With a move to the SEC looming within the
next five years, the Longhorns will find out
where they stand when they host Alabama in
week two. A week three bout with UTSA has
the potential to be tricky, too.
On paper, it appears UT should be improved
in 2022, but given the state of the program,
Texas no longer has the benefit of the doubt.

senior showcase
ed stansbury
Three decades ago, the idea of creating
an All-Star Game to give more exposure
to El Paso County high school football
players was introduced by our founding
director, Mr. Ed Fifer. Fast forward to
now, under the direction of our Executive
Director Rick Hernandez, we are
excited to announce and kick off the
celebration of the 30th Anniversary of
the Greater El Paso Football Showcase
and honor all who have been a part of
the game.
Over the last thirty years, the Greater
El Paso Football Showcase has seen
thousands of players representing the
best of El Paso high school football play
one last time in front of their hometown
crowd. Names like Paul Smith
(Andress, 9-year NFL Veteran), Brian
Young (Andress, 8-year NFL Veteran),
Steven Montes (Del Valle, Current NFL
quarterback), and of course, current
NFL superstar Aaron Jones (Burges,
Green Bay Packers), to name a few,
have all played in the game.
The celebration will kick off with a
press conference in September to officially
announce all the festivities like
the Draft, pre-game tailgate, All-Star
Alumni Social, All-Star Palooza, and the
halftime performer planned for the big
game on December 17 at the Socorro
ISD Student Activities Complex.
The Greater El Paso Football Showcase
has grown over the thirty years to
represent not just football players but
everyone involved in a Friday night football
game. Band, cheer, dance, sports
media, choir, JROTC, mascots, and athletic
trainers have all been included and
all have opportunities to continue their
education with scholarships given out
by the Showcase.
To date, we have awarded over
$600,000 in scholarships, and for our
30th Anniversary, we want to celebrate
all those participants. We ask that any
GEPFS alumni register on our website
www.geps.org to get up-to-date announcements
and alumni giveaways.
We are in for a great football season
and look forward to covering all the
players and teams here in El Paso on
9 Overtime.
