texas techtexastech2022 SCHEDULEColin DeaverDespite coming off a win over Mississippi Statein the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the unknownswirls around Texas Tech entering 2022. Newhead coach Joey McGuire has infused the fanbasewith energy, after Matt Wells was firedbefore the end of the 2021 campaign. McGuirehas brought in what appears to be a solid coachingstaff in defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter(from Oregon) and up-and-coming offensivecoordinator Zach Kittley (Western Kentucky),who helped Bailey Zappe break records withthe Hilltoppers.Recruiting has also been a big hit under thefirst-time head coach McGuire; at one pointthis summer, Tech had the second-best 2023recruiting class in the nation. None of that willhelp the Red Raiders win football games, though,so McGuire will have to roll up his sleeve.Quarterbacks Tyler Shough and Donovan Smithreturn after both played in spurts in 2021 and,along with Behren Morton, will compete for thestarting job. SaRodorick Thompson and TahjBrooks are back to lead the running game; whileTech lost its top two receivers, Kittley’s fastpaced,pass-happy offense should easily allowsome new pass-catchers to fill in quickly.Defensively, Texas Tech was better in 2021than it had been in any year going back asfar as 2015. The Red Raiders allowed “only”406 yards per game and just 30.2 points pergame. They return six players from that unitand DeRuyter was known for a tough-noseddefense at Oregon. Things could improve in2022.Texas Tech has not had a winning season inBig 12 play in over a decade (30-59 the past10 seasons). Picked to finish 9th in the Big12 preseason poll, not much is expected ofthe Red Raiders in year one under McGuire.There’s plenty of variability in potential outcomes;don’t be surprised if Tech makes abowl game.
