Three decades ago, the idea of creating
an All-Star Game to give more exposure
to El Paso County high school football
players was introduced by our founding
director, Mr. Ed Fifer. Fast forward to
now, under the direction of our Executive
Director Rick Hernandez, we are
excited to announce and kick off the
celebration of the 30th Anniversary of
the Greater El Paso Football Showcase
and honor all who have been a part of
the game.
Over the last thirty years, the Greater
El Paso Football Showcase has seen
thousands of players representing the
best of El Paso high school football play
one last time in front of their hometown
crowd. Names like Paul Smith
(Andress, 9-year NFL Veteran), Brian
Young (Andress, 8-year NFL Veteran),
Steven Montes (Del Valle, Current NFL
quarterback), and of course, current
NFL superstar Aaron Jones (Burges,
Green Bay Packers), to name a few,
have all played in the game.
The celebration will kick off with a
press conference in September to officially
announce all the festivities like
the Draft, pre-game tailgate, All-Star
Alumni Social, All-Star Palooza, and the
halftime performer planned for the big
game on December 17 at the Socorro
ISD Student Activities Complex.
The Greater El Paso Football Showcase
has grown over the thirty years to
represent not just football players but
everyone involved in a Friday night football
game. Band, cheer, dance, sports
media, choir, JROTC, mascots, and athletic
trainers have all been included and
all have opportunities to continue their
education with scholarships given out
by the Showcase.
To date, we have awarded over
$600,000 in scholarships, and for our
30th Anniversary, we want to celebrate
all those participants. We ask that any
GEPFS alumni register on our website
www.geps.org to get up-to-date announcements
and alumni giveaways.
We are in for a great football season
and look forward to covering all the
players and teams here in El Paso on
9 Overtime.
