The present issue seems dystopic but it is only too
normal after all the tragedies around us. Wildfires,
refugees drowning, domestic violence, femicides,
hooligan killings, intimidation and aggressions, violation
of public space …
43 degrees are now a normality, people at the edge of
their forces become wounded fierce animals, we fight,
we watch fighting, we are showing our teeth to the
fellow citizens. We still get together against oppression
and injustice, but quickly we turn against each other, if
not giving up too easy. And this apathy is the greatest of
all tragedies.
The photographer is an observer by excellence. But the
time has come to go beyond the fallacy that a
photographer should not intervene under any
circumstances. The time has come to put down the
camera and provide relief, help escape the wildfire, stop
the abuser, mobilize the frightened … in other words,
save the “little Sudanese girl from the vulture”.
