Hulme helped the team to a 34-22 win over St Helens last week with five goals and said things feel like they are coming together at the right time. “I think togetherness summed up our win against St Helens last week,” said the 24 yearold. “We have been waiting all season for it to click and everything we have done in training since we lost in the Challenge Cup final has just come together. ‘Sticking together’ has always been our motto and that showed. “We have had a bit of a rough season but we have always had belief in each other. Against Saints, we were behind for the majority of the game but we are a team that never internally combusts, we never shout at each other and what brings us together is those big moments and big games. “What is great about Leeds is that we are a team built around everyone, each player plays their part. It’s a squad effort, so it’s not just those on the field - it’s those who are rehabbing and training every week, every single person contributes. Y Sam Hulme “Next up is Wigan who are a tough side and have had a good season and are highly respected. They never go away and you know you have to be switched on, because if you’re not, they will take points off you.” Hulme combines her playing with two other jobs and a two-hour commute to and then from training. Although she said it’s hard work she says her travel companions – Orla McCallion, Zoe Hornby and Izzy Northrop - make it easier. “I work in recruitment, but also have my own Canine Services business with my mum. We started it a few years ago and it is going really well. I help out as much as I can with various roles, so it’s pretty full on at the minute combining two jobs with playing rugby. “I live in the North East, but work luckily are flexible. On training days I can start at 7am but we don’t finish training until 9pm and then have a two-hour drive back. We joke that we have a 9-5 job, followed by another 9-5 job! The thing that motivates me to keep going is the group of girls we have at Leeds and what we are striving to achieve. Some days when you’re tired you do question why you do it, but once I get in the car with the other girls you realise that when we have wins like last week it makes it all worth it. “They are my closest friends and I couldn’t do this without them, it’s like having three personal therapists in the car! We have all gone through some big personal moments in the last few years and we have all helped each other through those. Izzy has joined this year and she’s fit in so well, she’s a good person and has a great work ethic and is the perfect fit for what we are about at Leeds.” Y
