HEAD COACH
ROHAN SMITH
Welcome back to Headingley and the
visit of Wigan Warriors. I would like to
welcome the directors, coaches, players
and supporters from Wigan who have
made the trip over this afternoon for
our third meeting this season.
3 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
Wigan are the form team in Super League
at present having won their last six games
to move top of the table after the last round
of games. They will arrive here in a confident
mood, and we need to make sure we match
their level of enthusiasm and intent. Our
game at their place earlier this season saw
us produce a strong second-half performance
to get the win whilst the Cup game here
was a tight affair that could have gone
either way. They are a well-coached side who
will have their eye on securing the League
Leaders' Shield in the next few weeks.
We face another must-win game to continue
our drive for a play off spot. Last week at
Hull was a team performance. I thought
that we defended particularly well. We had
a lot of young kids playing in the game and
we had to play under pressure for a bit. I’m
grateful that our young players are getting the
opportunity to play under pressure and that
will put them in good stead for the future.
I know a lot of our supporters enjoyed Sam
Lisone’s hat trick last week and it was certainly
something that raised a lot of smiles in the
changing room. Sam had some big plays in
the game that influenced the momentum,
but he has been doing that over the last
three or four months. He’s been a real upside
to our team and has made the most of
his minutes. He’s really had an impact so
it was nice to see him get a few tries. He
fit in with the group from day one and has
been making good steps forward. I really
appreciate his leadership and the way that he
has stepped up in the wake of having seven
or eight of our top seventeen not available.
This week we have confirmed the signing of
Matt Frawley to go alongside our other new
recruits Mickaël Goudemand and Lachie Miller.
Matt’s desire to come to the Super League
competition really resonated with me. His
game has matured and developed a lot over
the last four years. He has worked with Jamal
Fogarty and Jack Wighton at the Raiders which
has helped his game improve. He is a very team
orientated player who likes to get his hands
on the ball which is what we were looking for.
He is an organiser and wants to be part of our
journey; he had done his homework on our team
before we spoke and it was impressive to hear
what he wants to bring to our group. He comes
from a strong team environment at Canberra
and I think he will facilitate others playing well
around him as well as his own personal skills.
Finally, I would like to wish Lois Forsell and the
womens team all the best for their game this
afternoon. They had a great win at Saints last
week and are looking good for the play offs.
Enjoy the game
Rohan

BURROW GOES CLOSE AT
NATIONAL TV AWARDS
A big thank you to everyone who
voted and helped build awareness
for Rob Burrow’s nomination at the
National TV Awards on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, Rob’s documentary
‘Living with MND’ missed out at the
live awards at the O2 in London to
music superstar Lewis Capaldi.
The documentary, which was produced
by the team at BBC Breakfast,
followed Rob and illustrates the love,
support and challenges faced by him
and his family following his MND
diagnosis in 2019. You can still watch
HEADINGLEY TO HOST ENGLAND
V TONGA THIRD TEST
England will host Tonga in a three-
Test series this Autumn – the first-ever
international series between the two
nations and the first time they have met
since 2017’s memorable Rugby League
World Cup Semi-final in Auckland.
The matches will take place at St Helens’
Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday
22 October, Huddersfield’s John
Smith’s Stadium on Saturday 28
October and Headingley Stadium
on Saturday 4 November.
Tonga last played England in this country
in the 2006 Federation Shield Final – won
32-14 by England – and the two did not
meet again until November 2017 when
the Polynesians, trailing 20-0 with only
seven minutes remaining, came within
a whisker of overturning the deficit
and denying England a final place at
the death, eventually losing 20-18.
Two years later the Tongans would
emphatically announce themselves as a force
on the international stage, with outstanding
victories over Australia and Great Britain.
With the three-time Super League-winning
coach Kristian Woolf at the helm and the
outstanding NRL forward Jason Taumalolo
likely to be in the squad, Tonga will present a
significant challenge to Shaun Wane’s side.
Tickets for the series are on sale now at
eticketing.co.uk/rugbyleague from £25 for
Adults and £12.50 for Under 16s. A threematch
bundle is also available from £52.50
for Adults and £26.25 for Under 16s.
Those looking to book 10 tickets
or more can save 30% on single
matches, with prices from £17.50 for
Adults and £8.75 for under 16s – available
RHINOS
SIGN UP MILLER
AND FRAWLEY
FOR 2024
Leeds Rhinos fans will have a keen eye on Sunday morning on the final
game of the first weekend of the NRL play offs as Newcastle Knights
welcome Canberra Raiders at a sell out McDonald Jones Stadium.
The game could see two of the
Rhinos new recruits for next
season go head to head with
Matt Frawley, the latest new
signing announced this week
for the Rhinos, in the halves for
the underdog Raiders against in
form Newcastle. Lachie Miller
is on stand by for the Knights if
Queensland State of Origin star
Kalyn Ponga is not declared fit.
Half-back Frawley has signed a two
year contract at Headingley. He
has started the last three games
for the Raiders as they booked
their place in the play offs. He has
previously played in Super League
with Huddersfield Giants in 2019
when he was just 24 years old. Now
28, he has made 52 appearances
in the NRL with Canterbury
and Canberra. Whilst at the
Bulldogs, he played alongside
Rhinos favourite Rhyse Martin.
Commenting on the move to the
Rhinos, Frawley said, “I am really
excited to join Leeds and to have
the opportunity to come over to
the UK. I know I am joining a club
that has big expectations for
success and that is something
that I am looking forward to
being part of. I think the
year I had in England
when I was younger
will be a massive
advantage for
me this time
around as I
know the
country, the
competition
and what to
expect and I
want to pick
up where I
left off. P

7 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS

“My fiance and I love the
city of Leeds and can’t
wait to make it our new
home. From a personal
point of view, the chance
to call Headingley my home
stadium was a big factor
in deciding to join the club
and I can’t wait to run out
in front of the home fans.
“I am an experienced player
now and an organising half
and I know that is what
Rohan is looking for, to
get our team around the
park. I know the club has
a crop of exciting young
players and I want to help
those guys come through
as well as my own goals
for my time at the club.
“I am looking forward to
working with Rohan and
the coaches. I have only
heard good things about
Rohan from people who
have worked with him
previously and we have
had lots of chats already
about the direction he
wants the club to go in
and I am excited to be
part of that journey,”
added Frawley.
Full back Lachie Miller
kicked three goals as he
made a winning return to
the side for the Knights
win over the Dragons last
week. His route to the
NRL was less conventional
than most having spent
time playing Rugby Union
Sevens, including a trip
to the Tokyo Olympics.
Miller, who joined the
Knights this season from
Cronulla Sharks, grew up
playing Rugby League but
forged a career in Rugby
Union Sevens going on
to play for Australia and
represent his country at
the 2020 Olympic Games.
Y Matt Frawley
He has made twelve
appearances at full-back for
the Knights this season but
can also play in the halves.
He has agreed a three year
contract with the Rhinos.
Commenting on signing
for the Rhinos, Miller said,
“I am looking forward to
joining such a prestigious
club as Leeds Rhinos and
excited to come across
having spoken with Rohan
and Gary to be part of the
culture at Headingley.
“I really enjoyed my footie
at the start of this season
and I want to bring that
to the Rhinos. It is a big
change for my family, we
have a newborn and twoyear-old
so it is a oncein-a-lifetime
opportunity
for our young family that
we are ready to embrace
and make the most of.
“I watch a fair bit of the
Super League competition
on TV over here in Australia
and I am fortunate to be
joining such a great club
and hopefully I can add to
the culture. I know the club
has a history of mixing a
core of young English lads
with the overseas guys
and I can’t wait to play in
front of the passionate
Leeds fans at Headingley.
“I know there are a lot of
connections between the
Knights and the Rhinos
over the years but I haven’t
spoken to Brian McDermott
or Danny Buderus yet about
the club as we have been
trying to get the deal done,
I’ll definitely be seeking
any advice they can give
me though. I have spoken
to some good friends of
mine, Brandon Lee and
Tyson Gamble, who have
been coached by Rohan
and they say what a legend
of a guy he is. His style
of footie, I think, will suit
the way I like to play and I
knew from the moment we
spoke on the phone that
he was a coach I wanted
to be associated with,”
added the 29-year-old. Y
CONFIDENCE HIGH HEADING
INTO PLAYS OFF SAYS HULME
11 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
Leeds Rhinos Women play
their final game of the regular
season today and half back
Sam Hulme believes the
team are in a good place
heading into the play offs.
Hulme helped the team to a
34-22 win over St Helens last
week with five goals and said
things feel like they are coming
together at the right time.
“I think togetherness summed
up our win against St Helens
last week,” said the 24 yearold.
“We have been waiting
all season for it to click and
everything we have done in
training since we lost in the
Challenge Cup final has just
come together. ‘Sticking
together’ has always been
our motto and that showed.
“We have had a bit of a
rough season but we have
always had belief in each
other. Against Saints, we
were behind for the majority
of the game but we are a
team that never internally
combusts, we never shout at
each other and what brings
us together is those big
moments and big games.
“What is great about Leeds
is that we are a team built
around everyone, each
player plays their part. It’s
a squad effort, so it’s not
just those on the field - it’s
those who are rehabbing and
training every week, every
single person contributes.
Y Sam Hulme
“Next up is Wigan who are
a tough side and have had a
good season and are highly
respected. They never go
away and you know you
have to be switched on,
because if you’re not, they
will take points off you.”
Hulme combines her playing
with two other jobs and
a two-hour commute to
and then from training.
Although she said it’s hard
work she says her travel
companions – Orla McCallion,
Zoe Hornby and Izzy
Northrop - make it easier.
“I work in recruitment, but
also have my own Canine
Services business with my
mum. We started it a few
years ago and it is going
really well. I help out as
much as I can with various
roles, so it’s pretty full on at
the minute combining two
jobs with playing rugby.
“I live in the North East, but
work luckily are flexible. On
training days I can start
at 7am but we don’t finish
training until 9pm and then
have a two-hour drive back.
We joke that we have a 9-5
job, followed by another 9-5
job! The thing that motivates
me to keep going is the group
of girls we have at Leeds
and what we are striving to
achieve. Some days when
you’re tired you do question
why you do it, but once I get
in the car with the other
girls you realise that when
we have wins like last week
it makes it all worth it.
“They are my closest friends
and I couldn’t do this without
them, it’s like having three
personal therapists in the car!
We have all gone through
some big personal moments
in the last few years and we
have all helped each other
through those. Izzy has joined
this year and she’s fit in so
well, she’s a good person and
has a great work ethic and
is the perfect fit for what
we are about at Leeds.” Y

FOUNDATION
ACTIVITY SESSIONS IN
PARTNERSHIP WITH
PARKINSON’S UK
13 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
This September, Leeds Rhinos
Foundation will begin catered
physical activity sessions for people
living with Parkinson’s Disease.
In partnership with Parkinson’s UK,
Headingley Stadium will host weekly
meetings for people to improve
and maintain their physical activity
levels through accessible, fun and
engaging rugby-themed sessions.
Participants will also have the
opportunity to engage in a social
opportunity and refreshments
in the Keith Howard Community
Hub after their session.
Partnership and Projects Manager,
Ben Berry, said: “We’re so
excited to begin our provision of
accessible and fun rugby-based
physical activity sessions for
people who have Parkinson’s.”
“The funding will allow Leeds
Rhinos Foundation to flourish in
our overarching aims to support
communities into developing
long-term regular physical
activity which will in turn, improve
their health and wellbeing.”
“The project will also provide the
opportunity for individuals to
socialise in a space following their
activity and facilitate opportunities
for people to engage with our
club and foundation outside of
just physical activity too.”
The 18-week programme will feed
into the regular weekly physical
activity maintenance sessions held
both at Headingley Stadium and
RUGBEES HELPING YOUNG PLAYERS
START RUGBY LEAGUE JOURNEY
Leeds Rhinos Foundation recently completed a
successful first term of their RugBees project, which
is run in partnership with the RFL to encourage
more primary school children to take up the sport.
RugBees is open to girls aged 7-11 and aims to help
them develop their confidence in areas such as catching,
passing and kicking – whilst having plenty of fun too.
The 10-week programme at Leeds West Academy
and Carr Manor High School has been well attended
and has included a training session with local
club North Leeds Leopards as well as visits from
players from the Rhinos Women’s squad. RugBees
were also invited to be player mascots at the
recent Rhinos Women’s game at Headingley.
One parent expressed her praise for the programme,
“This was the first time that the children had
ever played rugby and they absolutely loved it
from the beginning. The sessions were really
well structured, the teaching clear and had
me wanting to join in from the sidelines!”
Women and Girls Development Officer, Ellis Pascall,
who has led the sessions said: “It has been amazing
to see the growth of some talented young players
over the last ten weeks. Some had never played rugby
before but are now engaged with the game and are
going on to play for their local community club, which
is what this programme is all about. With the growth
of the Women’s Super League, more and more young
girls want to get involved in the sport and want to
follow in the footsteps of the Rhinos Women’s players.
RugBees is a great starting point for that journey.”
CULT HEROES
A chance to recognise those who became South Stand heroes for their memorable
exploits in blue and amber no matter their length of service.
15 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
GARETH ELLIS
Signed from Wakefield and a late
developer, strapping back rower
Gareth Ellis had the rarest of
distinctions, winning a medal on his
Leeds debut.
A member of the side that was
victorious in the World Club Challenge
against Canterbury at Elland Road in
2005, he claimed that he felt a fraud
but more than went on to justify
his capture in his four years and 123
appearances in blue and amber, which
yielded 27 tries and a goal.
A Great Britain and England regular
during his time at Headingley, in
all he appeared in six major finals
for the Rhinos, winning four – two
Grand Finals and a second World
Club Challenge – and became one
of the cornerstones of the early part
of the ‘golden generation’ with his
tremendous work rate and ‘take no
prisoners’ defensive lead.
He was regularly referred to by his
teammates as the one they wanted
next to them in the trenches. He
moved to the NRL where he had the
unprecedented distinction of winning
the Wests Tigers’ Player of the Year
award on three consecutive occasions,
getting to within 80 minutes of a
Grand Final, and has just been given a
life membership by the club.
Returning to Super League, he
became the first Hull FC captain to
lift the Challenge Cup at Wembley in
2016, repeating the feat the following
CLIFF LYONS
CULT HEROES
Unpredictable, nuggety and Wild
West moustachioed, Cliff Lyons
was destined to be a star from the
minute he arrived at Headingley.
Narrandera’s finest possessed all
the qualities beloved in a Leeds
stand off, was box office, and
in two short spells cemented
himself as one the most fondly
remembered overseas players.
He first arrived in 1985-86 as an
unheralded North Sydney player,
serving notice of his qualities
on debut as he ran in a hat trick
against Keighley in the second
round of the Yorkshire Cup. He was
at his finest in big matches, scoring
tries against the New Zealand
tourists in narrow defeat and was
superb in four consecutive games
against Widnes in March ‘86, his
drop goal proving crucial in a 5-0
Challenge Cup quarter final replay.
The semi at Elland Road against
Hull K.R. was also drawn, he
again landed a one-pointer, and
dispensation was sought for him to
extend his stay for the replay which
was lost. In all, his 29 appearances
yielded 16 tries and four drop goals.
On his return, he joined Manly and
the start of a sensational rise,
taking the Sea Eagles to Grand
Final success in 1987 with a try and
winning the Clive Churchill medal.
He played over 300 matches
for them in a 13-year career.
His return to Leeds for the 1988-89
campaign started in sensational
style with Yorkshire Cup triumph
in his seventh game back, winning
the White Rose Trophy. In a total
of 24 appearances, he posted
another eight tries, his final one
coming in Challenge Cup quarter
final defeat at home to Widnes in
front of over 26,000. In 1990, and
again four years later aged 33, he
was rewarded with a long overdue
selection for the Kangaroos,
breaking British hearts after a call
up for the Second and Third Tests.
ON THIS DAY
9 th September
On this day in years gone by, the Rhinos
have been in Play Off action and survived
the Qualifiers twice.
1990
OLDHAM 32 LEEDS 22
The 1990 season opener for Leeds saw
them lose out to newly promoted Oldham
in a 32-22 defeat. Paul Harkin’s sendingoff
in the first half, proved costly to David
Ward's side, who lost the game, even
though tries from John Bentley, Carl Gibson
and Cavill Heugh gave them a chance of
snatching a result at Watersheddings.
2012
HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS 48 LEEDS RHINOS 24
Despite a late rally at the John Smith’s
Stadium on this day, the Rhinos lost their
final game of the 2012 regular season
against Huddersfield Giants. Having fallen
48-10 behind, three late tries from Kallum
Watkins, Carl Ablett and Jamie Peacock
made for a closer scoreline as eyes turned
quickly to that season’s Play Off schedule.
2016
LEEDS RHINOS 32
BATLEY BULLDOGS 0
The 2016 Qualifiers
campaign began
to hot up in round
four as the Rhinos
got their fourth
straight win against
Championship outfit
Batley Bulldogs.
Outside backs Ryan
Hall and Kallum
Watkins led the
scoring with two
tries each as Brian
McDermott’s side
consigned the
Bulldogs to their
third loss of the
Middle 8s.
2018
WIDNES VIKINGS 6 LEEDS RHINOS 16
Super League safety was all but confirmed
in 2018 as the Rhinos got their third win
of the Qualifiers against Widnes Vikings
on the road. A low-scoring affair saw Luke
Briscoe, Matt Parcell and Richie Myler
cross the try line for Leeds, who consigned
Widnes to relegation to the Championship
as Francis Cummins’ side lost their fourth
straight Qualifiers match.
2022
CATALANS DRAGONS 10 LEEDS RHINOS 20
Last year’s run for the Grand Final began in
Perpignan as the Rhinos knocked Catalans
out in the first round of the Play Offs.
Liam Sutcliffe scored all three tries for
the Rhinos, plus a penalty goal from Zak
Hardaker ensured victory for the visitors,
whilst Dean Whare scored the Dragons’
sole try.
CLASSIC CLASH WIGAN WARRIORS
In each edition of Blue and
Amber this season, we’ve dug
into the archives to highlight
a memorable classic clash.
For today’s opponents Wigan
Warriors, we are rewinding
the clock to 2004…
On their way to Grand Final
glory, the Rhinos faced a tough
challenge at the start of the
season when Wigan came
to town in round three.
Wigan took an early lead
through a Danny Tickle penalty
but Leeds hit back with two
quick-fire tries. Jamie Jones-
Buchanan firstly raced onto a
grubber kick to collect ahead of
Kris Radlinski and touch down,
before Stephen Wild and Martin
Aspinwall failed to deal with
a cross-field kick that led to
Danny McGuire touching down.
Leeds’ ill-discipline allowed
Wigan to cut the gap to six
points through two more
Tickle penalties, but Richard
Mathers’ long ball allowed
Chev Walker to free winger
Francis Cummins on the right
and Jones-Buchanan was in
support for his second score.
Danny Sculthorpe and Gareth
Hock gave Kevin Brown enough
space for the half back to
squeeze over out wide to open
the Warriors try count for the
game, but Tony Smith’s Rhinos
responded with a brilliant try. The
ball changed hands seven times
as Sinfield stepped away up the
middle and Rob Burrow, Richard
Mathers, Danny McGuire and
Matt Diskin all handled before
McGuire took the final pass for
a magnificent second score.
Penalty goals from Kevin Sinfield
either side of the break made
the Leeds lead 26-12 and the
scoreline kept on rising as Walker
benefitted from a break from
Willie Poching to get over.
Orr, Wild’s second try and Martin
Aspinwall, kept Ian Millward’s
side in the fight but Diskin’s spin
and score out of dummy half
sealed a memorable 36-24 win
for the side in blue and amber.
What happened next?
A remarkable season for the
Rhinos ended with them in the
Grand Final lifting the Super
League trophy for the first time.
On the road to Old Trafford glory,
they lifted the League Leaders’
Shield with 24 wins from 28
matches, whilst Wigan finished
in fourth place. The two clubs
met again in the post season in
a straight shoot-out for a place
in the Final, and the Rhinos
won 40-12 on home soil. Y
FIRST SL MEETING
Leeds and Wigan first met in Super
League at Headingley in the inaugural
1996 season. A tough start to the
summer era saw Leeds suffer a
40-20 defeat, despite tries from
George Mann, Francis Cummins and
two from Graham Holroyd. Wigan
responded with six tries as they kept
up an eight-match winning run.
BIGGEST LEEDS WIN AT HEADINGLEY
2005 saw the Rhinos shock the Warriors
with a 70-0 routing at Headingley.
Having scored 70 points passed
Wakefield on the road the week before,
Tony Smith’s side looked unstoppable
again on home soil as Rob Burrow,
Chev Walker, Barrie McDermott, Mark
Calderwood and Danny McGuire
all scored two tries each. Andrew
Dunemann, Ali Lauitiiti and Keith Senior
also crossed in front of the 18,177 crowd.
Newman marked his return to the squad
with a try along with further scores
from Liam Sutcliffe, Rhyse Martin,
James Bentley, Cam Smith, Brad Dwyer
and a barnstorming Muizz Mustapha.
WIGAN WARRIORS
SEASON SO FAR
Wigan appear to be hitting the ideal form
at the right time, conceding only one try
in their last two displays, a stunning 34-0
victory at previous leaders Catalans and
then comfortably seeing off Salford at
home to take the Dragon’s place at the top
of the league table on points difference.
The 26-8 defeat of the Red Devils, a wonder
try by Jai Field after the first half hooter
the catalyst, was the Warriors’ sixth win in
succession, Lebanese winger Abbas Miski -
who has been a revelation since cementing
a place in the side -posting his eleventh try
in the last five of those games. Head coach
Matt Peet is refusing to get carried away by
the current form, stating: “It does feel good,
it’s a nice bit of recognition (being top) and
it shows we’ve managed to be consistent.
We have to build on that now. I am already
thinking about the tough game at Leeds.”
This will be the Cherry and White’s second
visit to Headingley this season, having come
away with an 18-14 win in the Challenge Cup
in May. The Warriors responded from being
14 points down as they looked to keep their
Cup retention alive, but that also ended
here when Hull KR were victorious in a
dramatic golden point extra time semi final.
Wigan will be looking to clinch their sixth
League Leaders’ Shield, having last held it in
2020, when it was decided on a percentage
basis due to Covid interruptions, and 2012
prior to that. Their final two regular season
fixtures sees them face Castleford at home
and Leigh away in the next instalment of
the ‘Battle of the Borough.’

THE COACH
Before last week’s game, head coach Matt
Peet was presented with the August Betfred
Coach of the month award, which he accepted
somewhat sheepishly, preferring to look ahead
at the bigger prize. “It is always about trying to
string some performances together. I just want
us to play well,” he acknowledged. “There are still
areas we can improve on. It’s all about trying to
build for the Play Offs. We have to give ourselves
the best opportunity to perform in a few weeks.
We have to be ready to go.” He is wary of what
happened last year when, having gone through
the season unbeaten at home, Leeds ended
their Old Trafford dreams at the DW Stadium.
Peet began coaching at Westhoughton
Lions U12s, moving on to Wigan St Pats and
included in his various roles in his 13-year
association with the club, he has been the
Warrior’s performance coach and head of
youth development and performance, as
well as England academy assistant coach
for three years. Alongside him this season
is retired half back Tommy Leuluai together
with fellow club legend Sean O’Loughlin.
37 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
LEADER
Club captain Liam Farrell has again been
in outstanding form in 2023. His try that
opened proceedings against Salford last
week put him on the verge of overtaking
Keiron Cunningham as the most prolific
forward in Super League history, his eighth of
the campaign in 26 outings, taking him to 138
in 347 appearances. Last year he was named
in the Super League Dream Team for a fourth
year in a row and signed a new three-year
deal to keep him at Wigan until 2025. A
product of the Wigan academy having played
for the club’s U18s and 20s teams, the cousin
of Andy made his debut in 2010 and went
on to complete a dream first season, which
included winning the Grand Final against
St Helens. That is one of four rings, which
also saw him awarded the Harry Sunderland
trophy in 2016. He played twice for England
in the 2013 World Cup as part of a total of
eleven caps, including appearances in the
2014 and 2016 Four Nations tournaments.

38 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
STAR MAN
Jai Field has built on a fabulous
season at Wigan last year when he
played 30 games and picked up 24
tries and four goals along with a host
of accolades, making up for a debut
campaign that was blighted by a
hamstring injury. He was awarded
club Player of the Year and Players’
Player of the Year, won the RL Writers
and Broadcasters Association Player
of the Year trophy, and was also
shortlisted for the 2022 Man of Steel
award. Signed from Parramatta,
where he made six appearances, he
also played eleven times for St George
Illawarra, his home town club, having
been born in Wollongong. Renowned
for his exceptional pace and broken
field running from full back, that was
perfectly exemplified week when he ran
clear from a Salford penalty to race over
from 70 metres out without a hand laid
on him. That took him to 38 tries in 54
appearances for the Warriors, to whom
he is contracted until the end of 2024.
RISING STAR
Winner of the club’s Young Player of the Year
award last year, scrum half Harry Smith
possess one of the best kicking games in the
competition. He proved that in 2022 when
setting up the winning try for Liam Marshall in
the Challenge Cup final at Tottenham, having
already grabbed a four pointer himself. His
reward at the completion of the campaign
was a first cap for England when he scored 22
points off the bench against Fiji. The 23-yearold,
who has been an ever-present this season,
said: “There’s a good camaraderie around the
lads. We’ve had some continuity and, if you get
that, you can build momentum.” Of his own
form, he commented: “It’s been a big season
for me, having the number seven shirt for the
first time is a big responsibility. I’m trying to
control the team and play off the back of my
kicking game. I know where I can get better.”
Widnes-born, he joined Wigan’s scholarship
system as a 14-year-old from Halton Farnworth
Hornets and captained the Warriors to three
consecutive academy Grand Final wins.

DOWN THE DECADES... 2013
A fallow year in the midst
of the accumulation of
silverware, the Rhinos
missed out on the World
Club Challenge, Wembley
and Old Trafford in 2013.
Leeds received a boost
before hosting the WCC
with Kevin Sinfield awarded
the Golden Boot as the
best player in the world.
Over 20,000 crammed into
Headingley for the clash
with Melbourne Storm,
who were looking to avenge
their defeat in 2008 while
the Rhinos attempted to
hold on to the trophy they’d
won the year before, and
they witnessed a thriller.
Cameron Smith, Cooper
Cronk and Billy Slater were
the difference against a side
that had Kallum Watkins at
full back for broken thumb
victim Zak Hardaker, initial
trialist Joe Vickery on the
wing and Carl Ablett in the
centres. After going into
the break on level terms,
Tohu Harris’ defining score
at the start of the second
half helped Storm hang
on for a 18-14 win, despite
a try from Leeds’ Jamie
Jones-Buchanan and Jamie
Peacock being held out.
Victory at St Helens a
week after, with Ryan Hall
crossing twice, was followed
by a heavy home defeat
against Huddersfield, who
were to go on and claim the
League Leaders’ Shield for
the first time in the Super
League era. During spring,
the Rhinos went eight
games unbeaten, including a
rip-roaring home draw with
Bradford, until encountering
the Giants again.
New signing Joel Moon was
in great form during the run
along with Watkins, who
was to end the year with 20
tries. His two touchdowns
at the John Smith’s Stadium
were not enough to prevent
the Rhinos crashing out of
the Challenge Cup in the
fifth round, which was the
first of four consecutive
defeats, including a first at
Magic Weekend to Wigan.
Jimmy Keinhorst scored a
hat trick as Castleford were
beaten but Kevin Sinfield
broke a thumb playing
for England against the
Exiles which ruled him out
for a month. Huddersfield
claimed a third successive
win despite two tries from
Liam Sutcliffe who had just
signed a new four year deal,
while it was announced
that Jordan Baldwinson
and Mason Tonks would
join New Zealand Warriors
the following season.
The Rhinos lost only once,
at home to Hull KR, in their
final seven regular season
games. James Duckworth
got a try at Wakefield and
another new signing for
the season, Mitch Achurch
crossed against Catalans
at Headingley. A win at
Wigan saw third place
clinched, a season high,
with Peacock named in the
Dream Team and on the
Man of Steel shortlist.
Ryan Bailey made his
300th career appearance
in the qualifying play off
at Warrington, the Wolves
winning easily 40-20, but a
late McGuire field goal saw
off St Helens 11-10 at home
in the preliminary semi final.
The season came to an end
the following week back at
the DW Stadium in a fourth
clash of the campaign
with Wigan, tries by Moon
and Sutcliffe not enough
to prevent a 22-12 loss to
the eventual competition
winners. Six Rhinos – Carl
Ablett, Rob Burrow, Hall,
Hardaker, Sinfield and
Watkins – were named in
the England World Cup
squad that heartbreakingly
lost in the semi final against
New Zealand at Wembley.Y
RUGBY LEAGUE CARES LAUNCHES
BRAIN HEALTH FUND
45 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
Rugby League Cares this
week announced the launch
of a ground-breaking new
project that will see the sport
of Rugby League take the
lead in the field of fostering
good brain health in players.
The Rugby League Cares
Brain Health Fund has
been established to allow
the implementation of a
far-reaching education and
support programme for
both current and retired
Rugby League players.
The aim of the fund is to equip
players and their families
with the knowledge they
need to sustain good brain
health during their careers,
and to provide important
support for those who
have been diagnosed with
neurological conditions, both
pre- and post-retirement.
Working with a wide range
of organisations including
the Rugby Football League
and its member clubs,
plus medical experts, the
independent charity RL Cares
has already begun to roll out
a comprehensive education
programme to current
players about this important
aspect of their health.
Concerns around the longterm
effects of head injuries
in contact sports have
increased in recent years
in the light of advances in
scientific research. The RL
Cares Brain Health Fund will
enable the sport to share
latest developments in this
emerging field so that players
can make informed choices.
The fund will also provide
advice to players suffering
poor brain health, and
to their families, such as
signposting to support from
statutory services and, should
resources allow, respite care.
Steve McCormack, Director
of Welfare at RL Cares
commented, “The RL Cares
Brain Health Fund is a
significant first for sport
in this country and once
again puts Rugby League at
the forefront of innovation
and best practice when it
comes to player welfare.
“Rugby League is now safer
to play than it has ever
been but, like every contact
sport, there are inherent
risks in taking part.
“The Brain Health Fund
will help us provide players
with the information
and advice they need to
mitigate those risks, to make
informed choices about
their own health, and to be
as healthy as they can be.
“The brain health workshops
that we’ve begun delivering to
Super League clubs have been
enthusiastically received by the
playing community and that
programme will expand as
the Brain Health Fund grows.

“We also want to help the
families of current and retired
players who are experiencing
poor brain health. We aim to
put together a comprehensive
package of support and build
on the sport’s proud record
of looking after its own.”
McCormack is a member
of the sport’s Brain Health
Steering Group which
also features high level
medical experts, including
Prof Chris Brookes, Dr
Gemma Phillips and Prof
Ben Jones, plus RL Cares
trustee Kevin Sinfield OBE.
Kevin Sinfield OBE, RL Cares
trustee and former player
commented, “Educating
players about brain health
is massively important: they
spend their careers trying to
look after every part of their
bodies but often neglect the
brain and their own heads.
“We can change the
path for some people by
providing the support they
need to become better,
but we can also support
ourselves to be better too.
“Anything we can do to help
current and former players
understand that there are
things they can do to make
the path ahead a better
path is to be welcomed.
“Education is vital, both for
players and their families.
Players need to help
themselves because they
have to be accountable
and responsible for their
own careers and health.
“The support for families is
really important. Through
my work with the MND
community I understand
the value of a good support
network. “Not only from a
love and care perspective,
but friendship and socially,
there will be times when
things aren’t going to plan
and things might seem to be
off-track, having a friendly
face with some clear, simple
advice is a massive help.
“That’s where RL Cares and
the Brain Health Fund have
an important role to play.”
Prof Chris Brookes, who has
been involved in the sport
for almost 30 years as team
doctor with Great Britain,
England and Wigan, said
the RL Cares Brain Health
Fund is a continuation
of the sport’s proactive
approach to player welfare.
“I am really proud of the way
in which Rugby League has led
the way in the field of player
welfare. Through the work of
RL Cares, player welfare is
first and foremost at every
club and the Brain Health
Fund is another step forward
in our commitment to make
the game as safe as it can be.
“Players have always had
worries about their health,
especially when they suffer a
brain trauma like concussion,
and the Brain Health Fund
will ensure that not only
will they understand more,
they will also be able to
speak to experts about their
concerns and anxieties.”
The brain health programme
will be funded by voluntary
donations and an active
fundraising campaign
of events run by Rugby
League Cares.
FOX MAKES DREAM
INTERNATIONAL DEBUT FOR
IRELAND WOLFHOUNDS
49 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS
International recognition is an achievement
for a player at any stage of their career
and last weekend saw one of the rising
stars coming through the Rhinos youth
system get the chance to represent
his country in a historic match.
Elliott Fox, who signed his first professional
contract with the club last month, started
and scored for Ireland in their firstever
Under-16s match against England
Community Lions at Wigan’s Golborne
Parkside. The former Stanningley player
helped Brendan Sheridan’s side into a 12-4
lead with his first-half try but the Ireland
side needed a late fightback to snatch
an 18-18 draw away from the Lions.
Speaking about playing his part in the
stalemate, Fox said: “It was a proud
moment for me to represent my heritage.
My grandad is Irish so representing him
and my family was something that I’ve
always wanted to do. The Irish are very
proud of who they are and what they stand
for so being able to pull on the shirt and
sing the anthem was emotional. It was a
day and game that I will always cherish.
“England Community Lions were really tough
opponents. They wanted to out-strengthen
us in the game and they had some tough
lads in the team. I think we just had a bit
more in the end, but were unable to get the
result. There was definitely enough for us to
be satisfied with our performance though.”
Coach Sheridan gave his side a boost when
members of last year’s Ireland World Cup
squad sent messages of support for the
players, including Leeds star Richie Myler
and Sydney Roosters Grand Final winner
Luke Keary. Fox said that getting the
support was great for the next generation
of potential Wolfhounds and gave them
even more motivation for the Lions test.
“It’s good to see that players like that are
so involved in the team,” he said. “They’re
backing the squad even though the likes
of Luke Keary are over in Australia. It
gives us young boys an extra urge to go
and play better and play for the shirt.
“Brendan was a great coach to learn
under too. He let us do our own thing
as he’s one of those coaches who was
more about getting you up for the
game and sticking to the basics.”
As the Academy season came to a close
earlier this week for the Rhinos, Fox is aiming
to put his experience into practice as has
he sets his eyes on making an impact in
2024.. “After having a few induction weeks,
I’m really looking forward to getting stuck
in with the boys,” he said. “I always want
to better myself as a player, so I will push
myself to be the best nine and one of the
best players in the team. I’ll try and be
enthusiastic and honest too so hopefully
I can make an impact in 2024.”.Y

Bringing people
together
generation
after
generation
Around 150 years ago, a group of people joined
forces to help people save and borrow to buy a home
for their family. And a few years earlier, just a few miles
away, people got together to play for a team we know
today as Leeds Rhinos.
And to this day, we’re still helping people feel part of
something – whether it’s bringing fans together to
roar on the Rhinos, or helping people to buy a home
and be part of their communities.
