38 | RHINOS VS WIGAN WARRIORS STAR MAN Jai Field has built on a fabulous season at Wigan last year when he played 30 games and picked up 24 tries and four goals along with a host of accolades, making up for a debut campaign that was blighted by a hamstring injury. He was awarded club Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year, won the RL Writers and Broadcasters Association Player of the Year trophy, and was also shortlisted for the 2022 Man of Steel award. Signed from Parramatta, where he made six appearances, he also played eleven times for St George Illawarra, his home town club, having been born in Wollongong. Renowned for his exceptional pace and broken field running from full back, that was perfectly exemplified week when he ran clear from a Salford penalty to race over from 70 metres out without a hand laid on him. That took him to 38 tries in 54 appearances for the Warriors, to whom he is contracted until the end of 2024. RISING STAR Winner of the club’s Young Player of the Year award last year, scrum half Harry Smith possess one of the best kicking games in the competition. He proved that in 2022 when setting up the winning try for Liam Marshall in the Challenge Cup final at Tottenham, having already grabbed a four pointer himself. His reward at the completion of the campaign was a first cap for England when he scored 22 points off the bench against Fiji. The 23-yearold, who has been an ever-present this season, said: “There’s a good camaraderie around the lads. We’ve had some continuity and, if you get that, you can build momentum.” Of his own form, he commented: “It’s been a big season for me, having the number seven shirt for the first time is a big responsibility. I’m trying to control the team and play off the back of my kicking game. I know where I can get better.” Widnes-born, he joined Wigan’s scholarship system as a 14-year-old from Halton Farnworth Hornets and captained the Warriors to three consecutive academy Grand Final wins.
