Tech Trends In 2024 A look at the trends in technology that are likely to emerge or develop further in 2024. Augmented Reality While we’ve been talking less about augmented reality during the last couple of years with the headline-grabbing attention of other technologies (such as mainstream AI), the VR (Virtual Reality) market remains full steam ahead. With portable VR devices available – including Apple Glasses and Oculus headsets – public exposure to augmented reality is becoming more frequent, boosted in particular by its prevalence on apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. AI and Machine Learning With continuous advancements in computer vision, machine learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence will transform the way we live, as well as enhancing industries and the ability for workers and consumers to create content, products and services more easily. AI is all around us – from manufacturing robots to healthcare management – yet it is the dawn of the chatbot that has arguably brought the technology into the public domain. 3D printing The world’s first hotel made entirely by 3D printing, will open in Texas in 2024, demonstrating the cuttingedge enhancements afforded by such a genius innovation. The realisation of 3D printing continues to grow, thanks to the perceived increased efficiency of a computerised workforce, and the need for human intervention only at the points of quality control, input of power, health and safety, and sign-off, though some concerns remain over the time taken to print. Quantum computing An IBM summit in November 2022 ended with the conclusion that we’re closing in on Quantum Computing technology being ready for commercial use. That is huge for businesses across the globe and could contribute in a major way to helping solve issues such as climate change and food security. This is made possible by the way quantum computing can successfully accelerate discovery and development of new energy production and storage technologies, as well as improved strategies for climate change mitigation (such as, for example, carbon capture). Computing power The year 2024 will see an increase in computing power for commercial and industrial use, while from a consumer perspective, prepare for the first discussions over 6G. After all, in a technological world that continues to gather pace, speed is everything. Smarter devices and smarter cities We currently have smarter robots, phones, TVs, self-driving cars and so on – all designed to help the rise of smart cities. That means, in theory, traffic flow and public transport will benefit from the progression, as will waste management and energy usage. This will make cities more liveable and more sustainable, with less pollution, congestion and consumption of energy.
