Illegal Manoeuvres
Staying on the right side of the Highway Code.
Though the majority of us drive
sensibly and safely, our good
intentions may count for little
if we unwittingly flaunt the
Highway Code in other ways.
Sleeping in your car whilst
inebriated
Logically, it may feel as though
sleeping off a drink or two is the
right thing to do, yet doing it in
your vehicle is strictly prohibited
if you still have the keys about
your person.
That’s because with the keys,
you are still classed as being in
charge of a motor vehicle, with
the potential to drive it.
Using an ‘unfixed’ mobile
phone as a sat nav
Since standalone satellite
navigation systems became
largely redundant after mobile
phones proved they could
competently perform the same
task, yet you’ll still need a
fixed position for your phone
when using sat nav, or you’re
committing an offence.
Driving or parking on the
pavement
Highway Code Rule 244 states
that you can’t park either partly
or fully on a pavement unless
road signs permit it. The same
goes for driving, which is
Rule 145.
These acts mean either
endangering pedestrians or
preventing access whereby,
in particular, people in
wheelchairs or with buggies
may need to use the full width
of the pavement.
Flashing your headlights to
give way
While the morals behind letting
someone go before you are
pure, using your headlights to
signal to another driver that
they can proceed is actually
an offence.
The reason for this is your
action doesn’t differentiate who
the invitation is for; and just as
easily it could be construed that
a pedestrian is being ushered
across the road, which in turn
could lead to an accident.
Driving through puddles
Commonly seen in television
adverts, movies and across
social media, the idea of
splashing a pedestrian is
something we may quietly
chortle at… until it’s us
being splashed.
Do this and you may be landed
with a fine of up to £5,000,
as the action shows your
willingness to “operate a vehicle
without consideration for other
persons”.
Sounding your car horn
in anger
While the horn is usually the
first thing we steer our attention
towards when frustrated by
another road user, it’s actually
an offence that can carry with it
a small fine.
In reality, the horn is only there
to warn others of our presence.
Having an obscured
number plate
While it’s inevitable that cars
are going to pick dust and dirt
from the roads, the obligation to
keep registration plates clean is
a serious one. Failure to do so
could land you with a fine of up
to £1,000.

While we’ve been talking
less about augmented
reality during the last
couple of years with
the headline-grabbing
attention of other
technologies (such as

remains full steam

devices available –
including Apple Glasses
and Oculus headsets
– public exposure to
augmented reality is
becoming more frequent, boosted in particular
by its prevalence on apps such as Instagram
and Snapchat.
AI and Machine Learning
With continuous advancements in computer vision,
machine learning and Natural Language Processing
(NLP), Artificial Intelligence will transform the
way we live, as well as enhancing industries and
the ability for workers and consumers to create
content, products and services more easily.
AI is all around us – from manufacturing robots to
healthcare management – yet it is the dawn of the
chatbot that has arguably brought the technology
into the public domain.
3D printing
The world’s first hotel made

We currently have smarter robots,
phones, TVs, self-driving cars and so
on – all designed to help the rise of
smart cities.
That means, in theory, traffic flow and
public transport will benefit from the

and energy usage. This will make cities

MAY DAY
One of the UK’s most famous car enthusiasts and journalists reflects on a career
spent uncovering the joys of motoring.
Give James May his dues – not
only has he suffered permanent
injury as the result of being
in close proximity to Clarkson
and Hammond, he’s also made
nerdiness cool again… oh and
he knows a fair bit about
cars too.
May came to prominence
alongside fellow automotive
aficionados Jeremy Clarkson
and Richard Hammond for
the second series of the wildly
popular Top Gear in 2003,
following its rebranding and
new format the year before.
“It’s been quite a ride,” he
laughs, reminiscing about those
early days.
“Joining the show was a pivotal
moment for me. Little did I know
it would become such an iconic
piece of television, effectively
redefining the way we view
motoring entertainment.”
Throughout his career, May has
taken viewers on extraordinary
journeys, traversing continents,
speaking at length about
the shimmering appeal and
torque technology of cars,
trucks, caravans and more; all
the while reaching under the
bonnet to pull out tradition
and humour.
“I believe that motoring is about
more than just horsepower and
speed,” the 60-year-old says.
“It’s about the experiences,
the stories, and the people
we encounter along the way.
The cars we drive become our
trusted companions, allowing
us to immerse ourselves in the
joy of the journey, the lifestyle,
and the experience of the open
road. I find it one of the most
basic and most valuable human
emotions – exploration.”
Since 2016, he and Messrs
Clarkson and Hammond, via
Amazon Prime’s The Grand
Tour, have continued to take
motoring television to the next
level with vastly ambitious
driving exploits - from crossing
the treacherous terrains of
the Himalayas to uncovering
hidden gems in the heart
of Africa.
“We wanted to create a
show that combined the thrill
of fast cars with incredible
destinations and a healthy dose
of camaraderie. It became a
celebration of motoring, travel
and friendship, all wrapped up
in a big, entertaining package.”
However, it wasn’t just the
adrenaline-fueled adventures
that resonated with viewers,
but also May’s infectious
enthusiasm and relatable
personality. “I’ve always
approached presenting as if I’m
speaking to a friend.
“I want the audience to feel like
they’re joining me on a journey,
sharing in the excitement and
discovery. It’s about bringing
motoring to life and making it
accessible to everyone.”

WHAT IS ANDYS MAN CLUB?
Andys Man Club is a free peer-to-peer group that provides
a place for men to come together in a safe and open
environment to talk about the issues or problems that they
have faced or are currently facing.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The process is about bringing men together who have been
in similar situations, to each help each other on a peerto-peer
basis, sharing advice on how they have dealt with
difficult situations. The 5 questions that are asked each
week are designed not only to encourage men to talk, but
to start to focus on the positives and on strategies to keep
moving forward. There is no pressure to answer any of the
questions and it is not uncommon for men to just listen for
the first few sessions.
The clubs all run on the same format and adhere to the
same guidelines. A key principle of Andys Man Club is
anything that is said in the club, stays within the club.

The club is open to any man 18 or over, who is going
through a storm, been through a storm or just wants to
meet a good group of people with the aim of improving one
another.
