The options for outdoor gatherings have exploded over the past
several years. Simple decks or patios have been replaced with threeand
sometimes four-season rooms complete with built-in heaters,
large screen televisions, cooktops, refrigerators, dishwashers and
more. Retractable screens keep bugs at bay. Often there are distinctly
separate living and eating areas, large enough to entertain a crowd.
Or, weather permitting, you might want to move a touch farther
out into the yard and enjoy the open-air elegance of your pergola.
Even when they’re not in use, pergolas add an attractive architectural
touch to your home. Their inviting presence lures your family
and guests out for a cozy conversation beneath the moon, or sun
if you get an early start. Pergolas can be freestanding or attached
to your home. Typically, they are open to the elements but shades
can add protection, trellises can add privacy. Some even come with
retractable roofs. ➻
