Style Magazine - December 2023

It’s an extra special, very merry month around here. There’s Christmas, of course, but it’s also my birthday (December 26!) and—most importantly—the 20th anniversary of STYLE: the region’s largest, most widely circulated glossy print lifestyle magazine. That’s right, 20 years ago, our publishers, Wendy Sipple and Terry Carroll, printed the inaugural issue (previously called Folsom Style) out of their bedroom “office.” Though much has changed over the past two decades (particularly the magazine’s look, length, layout, and digital presence), a lot remains the same. Our company is still tiny but mighty with a laid-back, passionate, and slightly crazy (in a good way!) culture; we also continue to be committed to the community—giving back to nonprofits and promoting the mom-and-pop places that make it thrive whenever, however we can. Something else we strive to do? Bring our readers original, geographically targeted editorial that’s informative, interesting, and upbeat. Speaking of content, this month’s issue—just like the past 240 of them—has a lot of it. Flip to page 64 for our annual holiday gift guide, featuring 35 perfect presents sold at small businesses in a variety of price points. Carefully curated by yours truly, I’m confident you’ll find something meaningful for everyone on your list. Finally, it wouldn’t be an issue of STYLE without a bounty of eating and drinking editorial. For a festive feast, read Pauline Arroyo’s piece “Winter Mints” (page 86), where she highlights seven peppermint pleasures guaranteed to sleigh your senses, including a martini mixed with candy cane vodka and a mocha topped with a flurry of peppermint cold foam. In “Wine Wonderland” (page 88), we recommend four big, bold, comforting reds to cozy up with this winter. And in Dining Out (page 82), Ryan Martinez visits Roseville’s tastiest table in town, Uncle Dumpling, for—you guessed it—handmade dumplings and steaming bowls of noodle soup. Happy holidays to you—and happy birthday to our magazine (and to me)! Thanks for picking up and supporting STYLE all these years. It’s because of you—our loyal readers and advertisers—that we’re celebrating this momentous milestone. Cheers! —Megan megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle
