Style Magazine - December 2023

It’s an extra special, very merry month around here. There’s Christmas, of course, but it’s also my birthday (December 26!) and—most importantly—the 20th anniversary of STYLE: the region’s largest, most widely circulated glossy print lifestyle magazine. That’s right, 20 years ago, our publishers, Wendy Sipple and Terry Carroll, printed the inaugural issue (previously called Folsom Style) out of their bedroom “office.” Though much has changed over the past two decades (particularly the magazine’s look, length, layout, and digital presence), a lot remains the same. Our company is still tiny but mighty with a laid-back, passionate, and slightly crazy (in a good way!) culture; we also continue to be committed to the community—giving back to nonprofits and promoting the mom-and-pop places that make it thrive whenever, however we can. Something else we strive to do? Bring our readers original, geographically targeted editorial that’s informative, interesting, and upbeat. Speaking of content, this month’s issue—just like the past 240 of them—has a lot of it. Flip to page 64 for our annual holiday gift guide, featuring 35 perfect presents sold at small businesses in a variety of price points. Carefully curated by yours truly, I’m confident you’ll find something meaningful for everyone on your list. Finally, it wouldn’t be an issue of STYLE without a bounty of eating and drinking editorial. For a festive feast, read Pauline Arroyo’s piece “Winter Mints” (page 86), where she highlights seven peppermint pleasures guaranteed to sleigh your senses, including a martini mixed with candy cane vodka and a mocha topped with a flurry of peppermint cold foam. In “Wine Wonderland” (page 88), we recommend four big, bold, comforting reds to cozy up with this winter. And in Dining Out (page 82), Ryan Martinez visits Roseville’s tastiest table in town, Uncle Dumpling, for—you guessed it—handmade dumplings and steaming bowls of noodle soup. Happy holidays to you—and happy birthday to our magazine (and to me)! Thanks for picking up and supporting STYLE all these years. It’s because of you—our loyal readers and advertisers—that we’re celebrating this momentous milestone. Cheers! —Megan megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle

5 Causes to Support This Season
by CAROLINE KINGS
In between holiday shopping, why
not also gift your time or money to
a cause that moves you? Whether
it’s dusting off a gently used
purse for Julie’s Purse Project,
purchasing extra groceries for
one of our area’s myriad food
banks, or turning to nature with
the American River Conservancy,
we’re sure you’ll want to dig deep
for these organizations and the
meaningful efforts they support.
Twin Lakes Food Bank
1
CAUSE:
Food
Insecurity
As the cost of
living continues
to rise, so does food
insecurity. And though
food banks need
donations year-round,
the holidays can be an
especially trying time.
WHO TO HELP: If you
can, add extra food to
your cart and donate
it to your nearest food
bank; luckily, our region
is home to a bounty
of them, including
Twin Lakes Food Bank
(twinlakesfoodbank.org),
Food Bank of El Dorado
County (foodbankedc.
org), Placer Food Bank
(placerfoodbank.org),
Upper Room Dining Hall
(upperroomdininghall.
org), and Auburn
Interfaith Food Closet
(auburnfoodcloset.org).
Non-perishable canned
goods (pasta sauce, fruit,
chili, etc.) are gratefully
received, as are hygiene
products (deodorant,
shaving supplies, body
wash, etc.), household
essentials (baby wipes,
laundry detergent, pet
food, dish soap, etc.),
in addition to cash
contributions. Note: Each
food bank runs slightly
differently, so please
check each respective
website for specific needs.
Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance
Hands4Hope
Julie's Purse Project
for some, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies.
Luckily, there are many nonprofits that reach and/
or teach, our region’s youth.
WHO TO HELP: Hands4Hope (hands4hopeyouth.
org) equips and empowers youth ages 8-18 with
the knowledge and skills to be civic-minded
and socially responsible via community service
projects, including a school supply drive to help
opportunity-deprived local
students; and a winter boutique
where those in need can "shop"
for warm clothing and blankets
collected through a donation
drive organized by Hands4Hope.
Placerville Toys for Tots
(placerville-ca.toysfortots.org)
gifts economically challenged
children with toys, last year
providing 7,727 of them to 2,459
youth. To donate, bring a new,
unwrapped toy to one of the
drop-off sites (to locate one
near you, visit their website)
through December 8; or donate
funds online.
Keaton’s Child Cancer
Alliance (childcancer.org) aims
to support children with cancer
and their families—emotionally,
educationally, and financially—
while fundraising to find a cure.
Opportunities to support the
cause include donating money,
vehicles, and gas or grocery
store gift cards; volunteering or
sponsoring a family.
3
CAUSE:
Vulnerable
People
You might be busy
planning seasonal
festivities, but let’s spare a
thought (and maybe a purse) for
those in need.
WHO TO HELP: Assistance
League (assistanceleague.
org/sierra-foothills,
assistanceleague.org/greaterplacer)—with
local chapters in
El Dorado Hills and Auburn—
is an entirely volunteer-run
nonprofit that aims to help
the lives of underprivileged
adults and young people in the
community.
The holiday season,
unfortunately, sees a rise in
domestic violence, so the need
for nonprofits like The Center
(thecenternow.org) increases. A
hub of support for those being
abused, The Center offers
legal services, counseling,
and attends to the needs of
impacted children, too.
For most women, their
purse contains their life. Julie
Nakayama started Julie’s Purse
Project (juliespurseproject.org)
to provide purses (filled with
essential everyday items) to
women experiencing hardship.
The holidays can be a
difficult time, particularly for
veterans, first responders,
and their families. The Center
for Post Traumatic Growth
(centerptg.org) promotes and
supports their healing via
effective group psychotherapy.
Christmas
Around
theWorld
Think Globally, Celebrate Locally
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
For many, the Christmas
season includes traditions
such as cutting down a
tree, decorating cookies,
and taking photos
with Santa. But just as
traditions vary from
family to family, they
vary from country to
country. Read on to learn
about some of the unique
ways people celebrate
Christmas around
the world and how to
celebrate locally.
Nash + Tender
In Caracas, Venezuela, roads are closed to traffic for the nine days leading up
to Christmas to allow residents to travel to morning Mass—on roller skates!
Along the way, the skaters sing Christmas carols. The origins of las patinatas (“the
skates”), which began in the ‘50s, are unclear. Some say it’s the tropical country’s
alternative to sledding, but one thing is clear: It’s fun! Celebrate locally by taking
the family to Roller King (rollerkingroseville.com), Sunrise Rollerland (skate.
sunriserollerland.com), or The Rink (therinksacramento.com).
On many American tables, a turkey takes center stage at Christmas, but in Japan, it’s
chicken that reigns supreme—specifically, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Thanks to a very
popular “Kentucky for Christmas” marketing campaign in 1974, Colonel Sanders has
been synonymous with Santa in Japan for nearly half a century. KFC says homesick
foreigners longing for traditional Christmas dinners inspired them to sell chicken
as a substitute for turkey and, to this day, December 24 is KFC Japan’s busiest day
of the year. Celebrate locally by supporting a mom-and-pop fried chicken joint. We
suggest CHX Shop (chxshop.com), Nash + Tender (nashandtender.com), and Kiki’s
When you trim the tree, don’t forget the spider webs. In
Ukraine, Christmas trees are often adorned with spiders
and webs as symbols of good luck. According to a beloved
folktale, a poor family couldn’t afford to decorate their
Christmas tree. To cheer them up, a friendly spider spun
beautiful webs on the tree after they went to bed on
Christmas Eve. As sunlight
entered the home on
Christmas morning, the
webs glistened and turned
to gold and silver, delighting
the family and providing for
all of their needs. Celebrate
Kings Meats
locally by picking up a copy
of A Christmas Spider’s
Miracle by Trinka Hakes
Noble or another adaptation
of the treasured tale to share
with the kiddos in your life.
And, if you find a spider on
your tree, don’t fret; consider
it good luck!
Throw another shrimp
on the barbie, mate! In
Australia and New
Zealand, where it’s summer
in December, it’s common
to barbecue on “Chrissie.”
Delicacies Down Under
include prawns, lobster,
steaks, and sausages. It
may be a bit cooler in the
north, but you can still give
the tradition a go. Pick up
some meat, sausages, and
seafood at Adam’s Meat
Shop (adamsmeatshop.com),
Roseville Meat Company
(rosevillemeats.com), or
Kings Meats (kingsmeats.
net) and fire up the barbie!
Pickles are all the rage,
appearing widely on
merchandise and menus
(pickle martini, anyone?).
But the
humble
pickle has been
associated with Christmas
since the 1800s. According
to tradition, parents hide
a pickle ornament on the
tree on Christmas Eve and
the first child to find it in
the morning gets a treat.
Some claim the tradition
Face in a Book
Ruby’s Books
came from Germany, but that’s a myth,
as most Germans have never heard of the
Christmas pickle. Germany has, however,
long been known for making beautiful glass
ornaments—often in the shape of fruits and
veggies—and some say a savvy American
salesman simply made up the tale to sell
leftover pickle ornaments. Either way,
it’s all in good fun. Celebrate locally by
snagging your own pickle ornament—
or “Go Pickle!” card game—at
Dorothea’s (dorotheas.com).
In Iceland, the Christmas season
starts on December 11 when the first
of 13 Yule Lads—mischievous, troll-like
Santas—come down from the mountains
to leave small gifts in the shoes of nice
children and rotting potatoes in those of
naughty ones. A different lad—each with
a distinctive personality—comes each
Candle Bar
night. There’s the “pot licker,” the “door slammer,” and the
“window peeker,” among others. If that’s not bad enough,
their mother is a witch who boils naughty children and their
feline friend—the “Christmas cat”—is said to eat children
who don’t receive a new item of clothing by Christmas
Eve. Yikes! Thankfully, Icelanders also have less frightening
traditions, such as exchanging books for Christmas. Celebrate
locally by shopping for gifts at your local bookseller,
such as Ruby’s Books (rubysfolsom.com), Face in a
Book (getyourfaceinabook.com), or The Bookhouse
(bookhousecp.com). But watch out for those Yule Lads!
In Ireland, it’s customary to place a candle in the window
on Christmas Eve to welcome strangers and remember
those who are far from home. And on January 6, the
Epiphany (celebrated by many cultures as the day the Three
Wise Men visited baby Jesus), the Irish observe another
tradition: Women’s Christmas. On this day, the men do the
housework and cooking, while the women meet up and
treat themselves to a day out. Ladies, celebrate both these
traditions locally by gathering up your girlfriends for a
candle-making workshop at the Candle Bar (candlebar.org).
And gentlemen, you know what to do…
Stretch Break
WHY MOVEMENT MATTERS
by MELISSA STRAND
A focused stretching routine
provides many positive
impacts on your health. But
committing to implementing
this important activity can
leave people feeling “stretched”
a little thin. Understanding
why stretching is important
and practicing how and where
to do it can help make this
concept feel a bit more…
flexible. We consulted local
experts on how to stretch your
way to better health today.
The Power of Stretching
“Stretching is more than just a
warm-up or cool-down routine;
it's a fundamental component
of a healthy lifestyle. Regular
stretching enhances joint
range of motion and flexibility,
reducing the risk of injuries and
improving overall mobility. It
also helps alleviate stress and
promotes relaxation by releasing
tension in the muscles; aids in
correcting posture issues, which
can alleviate back and neck pain;
and increases blood flow to
muscles, improving circulation
and nutrient delivery.”—Lisa
Robinson, General Manager,
Roseville Health & Wellness
Center, rosevillehwc.com
Routine Rules
“Stretching [should] be
performed regularly throughout
the day to, allow proper spinal
and joint mobility. Stretching
helps to release stress on
joints and prevent breakdown
from abnormal movement
patterns. Finding ways to
stretch throughout the day
to counteract the stress we
encounter is integral to [overall]
wellness."—Steven Harrity,
Owner & Physical Therapist,
Cameron Park Physical Therapy
Center, cameronparkpt.com
Stretch Out Your Stretch Times
“Modern life accumulates
tension in our bodies due to
stress, poor nutrition, and
other adversities. This physical
density obstructs the free flow
of life force, known as prana,
within our cellular structure.
Extended deep stretches are a
powerful tool to breaking down
this density and allowing prana
to flow freely. Stretching for two
minutes or more initiates a transformative process. The core of
the muscle, housing essential blood flow and elasticity, begins
to release and extend. This core lengthening ensures lasting
flexibility and enables prana to dissolve mental, emotional,
and energetic obstructions, preventing chronic illness.”—
Be “Flexible”
“Stretching can take place at almost any location—your home,
the gym, a sports club, or even your office. Taking a five-minute
stretch break after sitting for an hour can alleviate tension in
your upper back and neck, as well as ease eye strain. A sports
club can provide specialized stretch cages, mats, balls, and
other tools to assist with your routine; they also have certified
personal trainers who can develop an individualized plan.
Stretching at home provides convenience that can help [keep
your routine] consistent and effective.”—Erin Johnston, Fitness
Director, Broadstone Sports Club, a Spare Time Sports Club,
sparetimesportsclubs.com
Blissful Balance
"With the demands of a static society where we spend hours
working on computers, stretching and posture correction are
becoming more and more important. Stretching and flexibility
promote a balanced body through symmetry, which allows
postural alignment and prevents injuries.”—Steven Harrity, Owner
& Physical Therapist, Cameron Park Physical Therapy Center,
cameronparkpt.com
Not All Stretches Are Created Equal
“Two common stretch techniques used in fitness programming
are ‘dynamic’ stretching and ‘static’ stretching. Dynamic stretches
use fluid movement, preparing the body for physical activity, and
[are often] part of a warm-up routine. Static stretches are single
positions held for 10-30 seconds and primarily practiced at the
end of a workout or as part of a cool down.”—Erin Johnston,
Fitness Director, Broadstone Sports Club, a Spare Time Sports
Club, sparetimesportsclubs.com
6 Simple
Stretches
Seeking some simple static stretches? This
easy-to-follow routine—courtesy of Erin
Johnston, fitness director at Broadstone Sports
Club—can be completed at home or the gym.
1»Standing Calf Stretch
Stand facing the wall and place both hands on the
wall with your right leg forward and left leg behind.
Bend your right knee, keeping both heels on the
ground. Both feet should face forward without
turning in or out. Hold for 30 seconds then switch
feet.
2»Hamstring Wall Stretch
Lay on your back close to the outer corner of a wall
or in a doorway so your left leg can rest on the
wall or doorframe and your right leg can lay flat
on the floor. Gently straighten the left leg. Hold
for 30 seconds then switch legs and repeat. Move
your hips closer to the wall or doorframe to increase
the stretch.
3»Quadriceps Stretch
Stand next to a wall for balance. Grasp the heel of
your shoe or your ankle and gently pull your heel
toward your buttocks until you feel a stretch in
the front of your thigh. Keep your abdominals tight
and squeeze your glutes to prevent your back from
arching. Hold for 30 seconds then switch legs.
4»Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch
Kneel on the floor with your right knee on a rolled-up
towel or pad for comfort. Your left leg will be bent in
front. Keep your torso straight by tightening your
abdominals and keeping your chest lifted. Squeeze
your buttocks while shifting your weight forward
onto your left leg. You should feel a stretch in the
front of the right hip and thigh. Hold for 30 seconds
then switch legs.
5»Shoulder Stretch
Sit in a chair or on the floor in a comfortable position
with your back straight. Take your right arm across
your chest just below the collar bone. Hold your right
arm with your left hand or left forearm just below the
right elbow. Avoid elevating your shoulder. Hold for
30 seconds then repeat on the other side.
6»Neck Stretch
Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor, back
straight, and eyes looking forward. Tilt your head to
the right leaving your shoulders relaxed and hold
for 30 seconds. Lift your head back up to center,
then repeat on the other side.
OUR NEWEST DOCTOR
Wynter Phoenix, M.D.
Monahan Vein Clinic has welcomed Dr. Wynter Phoenix
to our practice and to Northern California!
Dr. Phoenix has included vein treatment in his practice as a general surgeon for over 10 years.
Originally from Southern California, Dr. Phoenix recently moved from the Reno area. He
shares a common philosophy on caring for patients with Dr. Monahan.
Dr. Daniel Monahan has been in practice for over 30 years and is active in national societies
focused on venous disease. The doctors have been friends since meeting at a scientific
conference several years ago. Our practice stands out for being the only practice in the
Sacramento area dedicated entirely to treatment of vein disease. Monahan Vein Clinic treats
patients with varicose veins, spider veins, blood clot issues, and the range of problems
in venous and lymphatic disease. Focusing the practice has provided greater experience
creating special expertise. Advanced techniques and technology enable superior cosmetic
vein treatment. As Dr. Monahan will continue caring for his patients, we are preparing to
provide expert vein care for the Sacramento region for many years to come.
Both surgeons are anticipating providing enhanced quality of care for vein disease as they
share knowledge and experience. Most varicose vein treatment is covered by insurance.
Spider vein treatment, known as sclerotherapy, is considered cosmetic, and estimates can be
given in appointments with our nurses.
Now is the time to have your spider
veins treated to be ready for Spring!
Call today for an appointment, (916)791-8346. Appointments not available online.
Don’t pack the pup—no dogs
There’s a lot of poison oak (yes,
even in winter), so be aware of
your surroundings. Wear layers,
including a rain jacket, and shoes
with traction.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
With varied terrain and scenery,
literal picture-perfect route; plus,
it’s accessible to all fitness levels.
Winter
Contrary to
popular belief,
poison oak is not
inactive in winter;
its stems still
contain urushiol
oil and will indeed
cause a rash.
Unfortunately,
without its most
easily identifiable
trait—the “leaves
of three”—
pinpointing the
plant is much
harder. Luckily,
there are still
the unpredictability of life. Seasons Law P.C. is here to
help you plan for an uncertain future so you can put your
mind at ease. We guide our clients through the important legal
processes of estate planning and administration throughout life’s
many seasons.
Our firm offers decades of experience in creating first-time
estate plans and updating existing plans as our clients’ lives
change. We prepare Advance Health Care Directives, Durable
Powers of Attorney for Financial Management, Wills and Trusts.
At an initial consultation, we will ask you to tell us your story and
your wishes for the future. We design plans across the spectrum
of client needs, to include aging parents, special needs children
and blended families. Once the planning is done, we strive to
write documents using language that you will understand, so you
have confidence that your plan reflects your wishes.
In addition to preparing estate plans, we can also assist with
administering estate plans. While trusts are typically favored
because they do not usually require court involvement, there is
a formal process for administering a trust. Our attorneys will
explain the trust administration process in plain English and
guide you, step by step, through to final distribution.
We can also help if no estate plan was created. Our attorneys
are experienced in court processes such as ‘conservatorships’,
‘guardianships’ and ‘probate petitions’ to resolve those
challenging situations when there are no documents in place.
As a client of Seasons Law P.C., we commit to giving you the
weather life’s seasons with confidence. We welcome you to
TEE TIME!
Graphic tees are back—and more
stylish than ever. Whether the
image is of your favorite band, a
graphic tees are the ultimate way
to make a statement. Plus, since
they come in varying styles—boxy,
fitted, cropped, or long—anyone
can rock the look! Pair them with
tulle skirts, sequin pants, a pair of
no wrong way to style a graphic
Q: HOW FAR IN ADVANCE
SHOULD I PLAN A VACATION?
A: When using a travel agency, timing
depends on several factors, including:
•Destination complexity. Simple trips
to popular destinations may require
less planning time, while complex
itineraries or remote destinations
often take longer to arrange.
•Travel dates: The availability of
flights, accommodations, and tours
can impact planning time. Booking
during peak seasons or last-minute can
be more time-consuming.
•Customization. If you want a
highly customized trip with unique
experiences, it may take longer to
craft the perfect itinerary.
•Decision-making. Your own decisionmaking
speed and responsiveness to
the agency's suggestions can influence
planning time.
•Group size. Group trips or family
vacations may require additional
coordination and planning time.
On average, it's advisable to start
planning a trip with an agency at
least 3-6 months in advance to
secure the best options and allow for
flexibility. However, last-minute trips
can also be arranged with agencies,
though options may be limited. Clear
communication and flexibility on your
part can help streamline the planning
process.
What’s Cooking?
Sizzling Hot Kitchen Trends
by NELLY KISLYANKA
Home design is ever evolving, but no matter the
changing tastes, an up-to-date, stylish kitchen
is always on the menu. What exactly makes for a
mouthwatering space? Keep reading for the scoop,
courtesy of local design experts.
Island Time
“Furniture piece islands, also known as worktables, have
long been popular in French and English kitchens, and
we love seeing [them] make their way into local kitchens,
since they often add a warm wood element to it,” says
Leyla Jaworski, founder and creative director of Design
Shop Interiors (designshopinteriors.com) and The Shop
by Design Shop Interiors (theshopbydsi.com). There’s no
wrong choice when going the route of a furniture piece
island, so long as it’s in scale with the kitchen. Some
popular options include an antique buffet or farmhouse
table. If your hunt for the perfect piece comes up short,
design a “furniture-inspired” island by dressing up a
standard island with adornments to mimic a piece of
furniture—such as decorative legs and molding—then
paint or stain it.
Need For Reed
When styling a kitchen, many people linger over
finishes, like countertops and hardware, and fly
past cabinet selection. But budding trends show
us that cabinets can be more than a blank slate to
ground bold finishes. In fact, as the largest and most
prominent component of a kitchen, they can drive
the kitchen’s aesthetic. One way to do so is with the
latest look: reeded cabinet doors.
Thanks to their rounded or scalloped profiles,
they add texture and visual interest to a kitchen
and make a serious statement. They’re typically
featured as an inset cabinet door so that the texture
is highlighted against the smooth frame in which
it’s set. While you can dress the entire perimeter of
your cabinets in the style, only using it on the bottom
cabinets makes a balanced statement. You can also
use reeded cabinet doors in specific areas you’d like
to differentiate, like a coffee bar or kitchen island.
A beautiful white oak is popular for reeded cabinet
doors, but if you’d like to be extra chic, paint them a
fashionable color like sage green or Behr’s 2024 Color
of the Year: Cracked Pepper.
Ahead Of T he Curve
Join celebs like John Legend and Chrissy Teigen and
jump on board the curved cabinetry trend. Jaworski
foresees this up-and-coming look to become a
hot commodity, thanks to their aesthetic appeal and how they enhance
the flow between the kitchen and the rest of the home. “Most kitchens
are at the center of the home and connect multiple spaces together for
entertaining, cooking, and quality time together as a family,” says Lauren
Jacobsen, owner and principal designer of Lauren Jacobsen Interiors
(laurenjacobseninteriors.com). The soft curves of rounded cabinets create
a smooth transition from the kitchen to connecting spaces in openconcept
homes. The trend is particularly useful in galley-style kitchens
that can veer toward feeling cave-like and sequestered from the living
space. Rounded cabinets soften the flow and ease the transition into a
galley kitchen, making it more open and inviting.
Curved cabinetry can be incorporated into a kitchen space in varying
degrees. Go all in by installing rounded upper and bottom cabinets for
a contemporary aesthetic;
or incorporate book-end
traditional shaker cabinets
with rounded ones to
soften their harsh, linear
lines and thwart them from
being too boxy.
Not all kitchens have the
ideal shape and dimension,
which makes installing
cabinets tricky. That’s
when curved cabinets are
practical, as well as aesthetic.
For example, a curved
cabinet can be strategically
installed between traditional
boxed cabinets that are of
varying depths due to the
dimensions and layout of
a kitchen. Doing so creates
a graceful transition rather
than an abrupt, awkward
change, provides extra
corner clearance, and
eliminates a sharp edge
protruding into the kitchen.
It’s All in the
(Cabinet) Details
A hot and fresh feature
you’ll soon see a lot more
of is unique cabinet details.
According to Jaworski,
ingredients like door
cutouts or foot details
make a kitchen sizzle. They
subtly emphasize cabinetry
and add character to the
kitchen. “Details elevate
a kitchen design and
emphasize the cabinets as
an important layer in any
kitchen,” she says.
One such detail is a
decorative toe kick—the
recessed space at the
bottom of lower cabinets,
commonly left as a
simple niche. To spice up
your cabinetry, opt for a
garnished toe kick instead.
Options include an arched
valance—a decorative
molding in a graceful
arch—or adding individual
feet, which Jaworski notes
is popping up in trending
kitchens. Both style
choices give cabinetry the
look of a furniture piece
rather than stock cabinet
installation.
with AKT Development to
Launch Pilot Program for
Older Adults in Georgetown
Project will inform efforts for future
“Community for Health and Independence.”
Marshall Medical Center, in
partnership with UC Davis Health
has announced plans for a
pilot program in Georgetown to
learn how utilizing home-based
healthcare technology can help
older adults and people with
disabilities live healthier, more
independent lives and better
manage their health conditions
at home. The program is made
possible by a $175,000 grant
from Sacramento-based AKT
Development.
SPECIAL AD SECTION
“Our Georgetown residents
experience many of the same
healthcare disparities seen
across the country with rural
populations and older residents
in particular,” says Dr. Martin
Entwistle, Associate Chief Medical
Officer and VP Population Health
and Ancillary Services at Marshall
Medical Center. “While the use
of this type of technology has
been implemented successfully
in other communities and patient
populations, Marshall can expand
the use of technology to better
support individual health needs
specific to the Georgetown
community – which can also help
advance the health of older adults
in many other communities in our
region and nationwide.”
2 | FOR YOUR HEALTH | www.marshallmedical.org
The project aims to equip
providers, patients, caregivers,
and lawmakers with tangible data
that supports using technology to
better manage health disparities for
residents including chronic disease,
issues with mobility, and other
socioeconomic barriers to care.
“It is wonderful to see this exciting
pilot program in Georgetown,” says
Lori Parlin, County Supervisor for
the district. “Residents often say that
they want to stay in their existing
home to live out their golden years
and this type of technology could
assist those with medical needs do
just that: age in place.”
Participants in the program will
be supported by way of checkins
with a Marshall provider to
help keep on track with health
goals and to address other needs
such as timely medication refills,
appointment reminders, and help with
transportation. The program will make
use of technology capable of direct
two-way dialogue between provider
and patient that can help collect other
useful information such as activity,
appetite, and pain measurements.
COVER STORY
Here’s Why Prediabetes Is
More Serious Than You Think
If you have higher than normal blood sugar
levels, here’s what you need to know.
Do you have blood sugar levels that are higher
than normal but not high enough to be
considered diabetes? If so, you have prediabetes.
Many people don’t think much about having
elevated blood sugar numbers as long as they
don’t have diabetes. But knowing what to do if
your blood sugar is out of normal range can be an
important step in helping you to stay healthier.
What is prediabetes?
Having prediabetes means that your blood
sugar is higher than normal but is not yet high
enough to receive a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
Blood sugar levels may be measured after doing
an overnight fast, with results indicating the
following:
• Normal: 99 mg/dL or lower
• Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL
• Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher
You may also have an A1C test done. This
measures your average blood sugar levels over the
past 2 to 3 months. Results of an A1C test are as
follows:
• Normal: below 5.7%
• Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
• Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
Would you know if you had prediabetes?
As many as one in three American adults have
prediabetes. Unfortunately, about 8 in 10 people
with prediabetes don’t even know they have it.
This makes it less likely they’ll make lifestyle
changes needed to prevent the development of
full-blown type-2 diabetes in the future.
You may have no symptoms if you have
prediabetes. The only way to know for sure if you
have prediabetes is to have your blood sugar levels
checked. Talk to your doctor about getting tested if
you have these risk factors:
• You are age 45 or older
• You are overweight
• You are not physically active
• You had gestational diabetes when pregnant or
gave birth to a baby over 9 pounds
• You have a close relative (parent or sibling) with
type 2 diabetes
Why is it serious to have prediabetes?
Having prediabetes is a sign that you’re more
likely to develop diabetes in the future (although
it’s not a guarantee that you will). Diabetes affects
every major organ in your body. It increases your
chance of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure,
blindness and nerve damage. Not only can it
affect your physical health and how long you
live, but it can also affect your quality of life. In
fact, people with diabetes are twice as likely to
experience depression.
In addition to being a wake-up call that you may
develop diabetes, having prediabetes also puts you
at a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
What can you do if you have prediabetes?
The best thing you can do if you have prediabetes
is to make lifestyle changes that may lower your
risk of developing diabetes. This includes:
• Losing weight. Losing just 5 – 7% of your body
weight can make a difference.
• Eating healthier foods. Changing your diet
may lower your chance of developing diabetes.
Eat more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean
meats, nuts and low-fat dairy. Reduce your
consumption of added sugar, white flour,
processed foods and foods high in saturated fat.
• Moving more. Aim to get at least 150 minutes
per week of moderate activity, such as brisk
walking.
• Checking your blood sugar regularly. Once you
know that your levels are elevated, it’s a good
idea to have your blood sugar levels checked on
a regular basis. Your doctor may want to do this
once a year or more often.
An Inspired Vision
for the Healing
Power of Animals
FEATURE
Jim and Barbara Coxeter, owners of Batia
Vineyards in Placerville, look forward to seeing
the compelling and undeniable companionship
between animals and people put to use as a
component of the clinical healing process. With
a significant gift to the Marshall Foundation for
Community Health, they are helping bring their
vision to reality for those in our community.
Jim’s deep connection with dogs began as a young
man but was changed forever with the arrival of
a tiny Doberman Pinscher puppy. No more than
ten days old, Bogart was the size of a hamster
and needed to be bottle fed. Jim raised him and,
for the next twelve years, Bogart was the best
dog he had ever known. Bogart was intelligent,
compassionate and very sociable with people.
For many years Jim lived in a rural
community in Shasta County as
well as residences in the Bay Area.
He would frequently drive to Santa
Cruz where his mother was living
in a senior assisted living facility.
Jim’s mother loved Bogart and Jim
always brought him along on his
trips. Bogart was allowed to visit
other residents in the building’s
common areas. He would
intuitively lay his head into their
laps and, in what Jim describes
as a “great awakening,” even the
most distant of individuals would
come to life when Bogart visited.
Jim and Bogart returned almost
every other week and even those
who were initially hesitant to be
approached by a 98-pound dog,
eventually came to look forward to
his regular visits.
In time, Jim’s mother and Bogart
both sadly passed. Then, as a
birthday present, Vino joined the
family. A first-generation half
poodle / half golden retriever, Vino
has been with Jim and Barbara
through the growth of their wine
business and is the official greeter
in their Main Street tasting room.
They each describe Vino as the
love of their life and there seem to
be few people in town who don’t
know him and agree.
Vino sets visitors at ease.
Like Bogart, his intuitive and
expressive demeanor has a
calming effect and it reminded
Jim of the visits to his mother.
Dedicated supporters of the
Placerville community, Jim and
Barbara reflected on the care they
had each received in Marshall
Medical Center’s emergency and
cardiac rehabilitation departments
and the friends they had made
with Marshall’s staff and soon an
idea was born. With a gift from
the Coxeter Foundation, they
could make a statement about the
important role animals – dogs
specifically – can have in healing
and well-being.
“I envision a program where
well-trained animals can visit
Marshall’s patients for therapy
on a regular basis,” says Jim.
“Repetition and even anticipation,
is key for the animals and for
the patients. It is amazing to see
the difference it can make in
someone.”
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic,
Marshall’s animal assisted activity
program provided patients
with the opportunity to interact
with qualified animal visitors
during their stay. These visits
provided social interaction,
sensory stimulation, relaxation
and facilitated stress reduction
associated with hospitalization.
Visits were prescheduled and
patients who were in isolation,
had allergies, or who declined
did not receive visits. During the
pandemic, however, volunteers,
including the animal assisted
therapy providers, were not able to
visit the hospital.
Today, Marshall is looking to
restart the program, training
and recruiting volunteers
(both human and canine!) and
strategizing how the program
can have the greatest impact on
patients in all areas of the hospital.
The generosity of Jim and Barbara
Coxeter, inspired by Vino and the
memory of Bogart, will help shape
and guide the program’s relaunch,
benefiting patients, family, and
staff for years to come.
DID YOU KNOW
The Best Exercises to
Ease Your Arthritis Pain
Regularly doing these activities may help reduce
bothersome symptoms in your joints.
If your joints are stiff or painful due to
arthritis, it may feel like the last thing
you should be doing is exercise. After
all, won’t all that activity make your
joints hurt even more? It turns out
that being physically active is one of
the best things you can do to help ease
arthritis pain. Of course, not every type
of activity is appropriate if you have
arthritis, but knowing what type of
exercises to do to help rather than hurt
your joints can help you manage this
common but painful condition.
How does exercise help ease
arthritis pain?
SPECIAL AD SECTION
Regular physical activity helps reduce
the stiffness that often accompanies
arthritis. It also replenishes lubrication
within the joints, helping to ease
inflammation and pain. In addition,
some exercises can help strengthen the
muscles around affected joints, making
it easier to move the joints with less
discomfort. Another benefit to exercise
in people who have arthritis? It may
help you lose weight or maintain a
healthy weight. Carrying less weight
can do wonders for joint pain.
What types of exercise are best
if you have arthritis?
The type of exercise you should or
should not do may depend on where
your arthritis is located and how
advanced your condition is. For the
most part, low-impact activities are
usually recommended for people with
arthritis, especially in the knees or hips.
Activities such as walking, using an
elliptical trainer, biking and swimming
allow your body to stay active without
much stress on your joints. Stretching
and flexibility exercises are also
beneficial. Many people with arthritis
find pain relief when doing activities
such as yoga or tai chi. Strengthtraining
exercises can help build
muscles surrounding the joint. It may be
best to consult with a physical therapist
or personal trainer before starting a
weight-training routine if you have
arthritis.
How long do you need to
exercise to see benefits?
As with any aspect of your health,
there’s no magic number that needs to
be hit in order to reap the benefits of
exercise. Aim for 150 minutes per week
of moderate activity, but do as much
as you feel comfortable doing. You can
even exercise for just 10 minutes at a
time if it’s easier on your joints. Any
movement you do helps, even if it’s not
considered formal exercise. Activities
like gardening, walking the dog and
raking leaves all get your body moving
and can help ease arthritis pain.
What should you keep in mind when
exercising with arthritis?
Although physical activity may help
improve arthritis pain, there are a few
things to keep in mind when exercising
so you don’t do more harm than good.
These include:
• Pace yourself. Start slowly and don’t
overdo it. If you feel pain, stop and dial
back your activity to a level that feels
more comfortable.
• Warm up and cool down. Don’t just
jump into exercise without getting
your joints ready for action. Move
gently at first, focusing on slow,
easy movements. At the end of your
workout, take a few minutes to cool
down and stretch.
• Heat before, ice after. Applying some
heat to your joints and surrounding
muscles before you exercise improves
circulation and may reduce stiffness.
After activity, apply ice for up to 20
minutes at a time, if needed, to ease
pain and swelling.
• Pay attention to your body. If you feel
pain or notice swelling, take it easy. If
your symptoms seem worse than usual
or you have more pain, stiffness or
swelling after you do certain activities,
it may be best to avoid those activities.
HOSPITAL NEWS
...story continued from page 2
“I applaud Marshall Medical Center, AKT
Development, and UC Davis Health for
collaborating on this innovative pilot,” says
Wendy Thomas, Chairman of the Board of
Supervisors for El Dorado County. “Through
strategic technology and this collaborative
partnership, just maybe we can help our residents
live longer in a place they love while helping them
stay safe and healthy throughout their lives.”
AKT provided funding for this project, as they are
a critical partner in understanding aging in place.
For example, a future “Community for Health
and Independence” development planned by UC
Davis Health and AKT will be a first-in-the-world
community that will benefit from pilots like this in
the Georgetown community.
“That university-planned community will allow
older people and people with disabilities to live
independently in technology-enabled homes
designed with healthcare in mind,” said AKT
spokesperson Bill Romanelli. “This pilot program
in Georgetown with Marshall Medical Center
will deliver valuable information to help with
designing a community for people to live longer,
healthier lives.”
UC Davis Health’s role is helping evaluate the
project’s effectiveness through the Center for
Healthcare Policy and Research, led by Dr.
Courtney Lyles, PhD. With support from graduate
student Pauline Martinez, CHPR and the team at
Marshall Medical Center will assess the project
using human-centered design approaches, and
help identify opportunities and technologies
that offer the most promise in assisting with the
development of a healthy living community.
Organizers of the pilot cite the need to serve a
growing aging population across the country
with more dynamic options for care. In the
Sacramento region, the adult population aged
60 years and older is projected to increase by
78% in the next decade. Those turning 65 years
old between 2015 and 2019 are expected to live
an average of 23.6 years, with 4.5 of those years
spent with one or more activity-of-daily-living
(ADL) limitations. The development and design of
the planned residential community will consider
lessons learned from the program to inform best
practices and identify potential challenges.
The pilot program is currently in the preliminary
stages of identifying and training staff, with a
formal launch anticipated in early 2024.
A
fter years of living and traveling
abroad, I’ve learned the golden rule
for finding the best food: Go where the
locals go. You’ll assuredly feel like you’re
amongst the Shanghai locals at Uncle
Dumpling, tucked neatly away in a quaint
Roseville strip mall, where—on my visit—
many local Chinese expats had come to
savor the flavors of their homeland. While
I have yet to visit China, those in the know
seem to agree that this newly opened
establishment is here to stay, and for one
good reason (or eight per order): The
dumplings are delicious.
Hailing from Nanxiang in Shanghai,
xiao long bao—soup dumplings—are
small, steamed buns prepared and served
in a traditional bamboo steaming basket.
Uncle Dumpling, originally established
in Shanghai in 1997, brings the traditional
flavors of xiao long bao—and other
Northern Chinese staples—to suburban
Roseville in a fresh, fun, space.
I asked our server, Daisy, for her advice
on what to order, being unfamiliar with
much of the menu. She recommended
starting with the stir-fried green beans,
which had a beautiful kick and tasty pork
niblets scattered throughout. Talk about a
tasty way to kick things off.
For entrées, we ordered the spicy
pork xiao long bao and the beef noodle
soup with a side of cucumber salad. The
dumplings, beautifully presented in a
bamboo steamer basket with a delightful
dipping sauce, certainly had our mouths
watering and checked the box for cultural
tradition. The cucumber salad, topped
with a slurp-worthy dressing, was crisp and
light.
Personally, the beef noodle soup was
the major hit of the meal (I am, admittedly,
a giant soup fan). To me, there’s almost
nothing better than the comfort of hot,

Cucumber Salad
Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao
steaming noodles, alongside tender
beef shank, a subtle burn of chiles, and
beef-broth-soaked bok choy.
All of this came to a tasty, decadent
end with an order of chocolate xiao
long bao: chocolate-filled dumplings
with a thick slice of strawberry at the
bottom. Originally ordering them to
go—because we were so stuffed—we
Arriving in the U.S. from Taiwan in the '90s, boba tea (sometimes
called bubble tea) is currently all the craze. And Rove Boba Tea—a
fun, flavorful addition to the foothills—is the perfect place to jump
on board the bandwagon. When you walk in, you’re greeted by an esthetically pleasing
environment: a wall of pink roses, velvet lounge chairs, and iridescent wall décor. The menu
is extensive, including milk teas, refresher teas, and slushies—all available with a variety
of boba and other enticing toppings—plus hot drinks, bánh mi sandwiches, salads, and
fried foods aplenty (shrimp tempura, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, and more). I opted for
a Rose-Lychee Milk Tea and Honey Milk Tea (both with boba, of course!) and, impulsively,
an order of house-made Egg Rolls with sweet chili sauce on the side. While waiting, I
admired the bright, playful interior, imagining all the great photo ops—but before
I could snap a pic, my order was ready. Both teas were flavored perfectly, not
overwhelming, and incredibly refreshing. Pro tip: I ordered my drinks with 50%
sweetness (you can choose between no sweetness, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%), and it
was plenty sweet. The fresh-out-of-the-fryer egg rolls boasted a crispy crunch
and were jam-packed with perfectly seasoned pork and veggies. Unfortunately,
everything was gone in the blink of an eye; fortunately, I’ll be back again (and
again!) to feed my newly acquired need for boba. .
THE
Hot
LIST
Winter Mints
by PAULINE ARROYO | photos by TAYLOR ALLRED
Mocha Madness
The streets might not
be iced with snow, but
the cupcakes at Icing on
the Cupcake are as iced
and delectable as ever.
Though you can enjoy
the cupcakery’s treats any
time of year, they pull out
all the stops in winter with
specialty flavors like the
beloved Peppermint
Mocha Cupcake. The
sweet dessert starts with
a coffee cupcake to give
you a much-needed
boost of energy on slow,
chilly days; then it’s
topped with chocolate
and peppermint
frosting (the ultimate
Christmastime combo),
with chocolate shavings
and a crushed candy
cane garnish. Get one
for yourself or a dozen
to share! 6839 Lonetree
December has arrived, and with it comes a flurry of festive flavors
to tickle your taste buds. Whether you're cozying up by the fire or
listening to holiday music on your morning commute, we’ve got
a peppermint pleasure that’s sure to freshen up your day. Keep
reading for seven delicious delights that’ll sleigh your senses.
So Matcha Peppermint
Coffee may get a lot of glory during wintertime, but don’t worry, we saved a spot on
our list for all the tea aficionados out there. In fact, what more could you ask for than
a cup of peppermint tea, especially if you need to clear up your sinuses and energize
your senses? For one of our favorites, check out Tea Xotics in El Dorado Hills. If you
love their Coconut Grass Skirt (premium Japanese matcha, coconut milk, and
cane sugar), we recommend adding a pump of peppermint syrup for an extra pep in
your step. More of a chocolate lover? Order the Snow White Matcha (a premium
blend of Japanese matcha, coconut milk, and Ghirardelli white chocolate) with a
pump of peppermint syrup. 4356 Town Center Boulevard, Suite 112, El Dorado Hills,
Cozy Up with Cold Foam
Like peanut butter goes with jelly, coffee goes with cold weather.
There’s nothing like a rich cup of joe to warm up your senses and
get you in the seasonal spirit. Want to make your daily coffee
break even better? Reach for a Peppermint Bark Mocha
the next time you’re at Coffee Republic. The hot cocoa meets
espresso mocha gets kicked up a notch with peppermint cold
foam, a lightly sweetened frothed milk that sits atop coffee drinks
like a cloud. But the folks at Coffee Republic make theirs even
merrier with peppermint flavor and a happy flurry of peppermint
candy sprinkles. 6610 Folsom-Auburn Road, Suite 2, Folsom, 916-
Double Truffle
Snooks Candies and Chocolate Factory—which recently celebrated 60
years of candy-making—has no shortage of wintry confections to get your
mouth watering. From one-pound chocolate Santas to holiday boxes, there’s
something for every sweet tooth on your list. But if we had to pick one star of
the show, we’re shouting out their Peppermint Truffle. Velvety smooth, the
72% dark chocolate confectionery (made with fresh cream, butter, and pure
peppermint oil) is coated with a crown of white chocolate and crushed candy
cane crystals that’ll dissolve in your mouth like snowflakes. Talk about a perfect,
palate-pleasing stocking stuffer. 731 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-985-0620,
Carol of Cookies
The man with the bag isn’t the only one who gets to enjoy milk and cookies this
time of year. If you’re looking for a minty twist on your favorite dessert, check
out Rebel Hen Café. This charming, locally owned eatery in Lincoln serves
up fresh trays of Chocolate Peppermint Cookies daily. Warm, gooey,
and gigantic, with peppermint and white chocolate chips in every bite, we
recommend ordering a glass of ice-cold milk for dunking or doubling down
on the chocolate with a mug of hot cocoa (marshmallows and fluffy whipped
cream not optional!). 436 Lincoln Boulevard, Suite 102, Lincoln, 530-602-9513,
serve it mulled at a seasonal soirée.
Sentivo Mulled Wine
• 1 bottle of 2019 Sentivo Primitivo
• 1/4 cup brandy
• 1 orange, sliced into rounds (also peeled, if you want
a less-bitter drink)
• 8 whole cloves
• 2 cinnamon sticks, plus more to garnish
• 2 star anise, plus more to garnish
• 2-4 tbsp. sugar, to taste (or sweetener of choice)
• Orange slices, to garnish
Combine wine, brandy, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon
sticks, star anise, and 2 tbsp. sweetener to a large
saucepan. Simmer on medium-high heat until it just
barely reaches a simmer. (Avoid letting it bubble—you
don’t want to boil off the alcohol.) Reduce heat to low,
cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes
or up to 3 hours. Using a fine mesh strainer, remove and
discard the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and
star anise. Taste, and stir in extra sweetener (if needed).
Serve warm in heatproof mugs with orange slices.
Gold Miner Café
426 East Bidwell St., 916-984-4181. American/Café. Rustic, 49erthemed
décor set the ambiance for the scratch-made
meals served at this Folsom favorite. In addition to classics
like flapjacks, biscuits smothered in sausage gravy, and
omelets aplenty (15+), they also offer low-carb, gluten-free,
and vegetarian meals, plus plenty of soups, salads, and
sandwiches—ensuring something for all ages and appetites.
Congrats to this month’s
nonprofit beneficiary:
Teams and Dreams Foundation
STYLE Magazine
1,000.00
Dr. Almonte of The Almonte Center and his staff, along with Terry Carroll, publisher of STYLE Magazine, present
the check to Chuck Mitchell, founder/CEO, and Alicia Mitchell, treasurer, of Teams and Dreams Foundation. This
month's donation was made in honor of STYLE employee, Debra Linn, who passed away last year; her daughter,
Rachel Linn Gish and grandsons, Sawyer and Benny, are pictured far right.
Teams and Dreams Foundation
creates opportunities and
provides supportive services
for foster children, ensuring they
can reach their dreams by providing
access and funding for extracurricular
and enrichment activities.
Per calendar year, the nonprofit
provides $500 for foster and adopted
children to use toward registration
fees, equipment for uniforms, and
recurring monthly fees for activities
(sports, music, dance, art, tutoring,
equine-assisted psychotherapy,
summer camps, school trips, church
trips, driving lessons, martial arts, etc.).
By helping these children access
extracurricular and enrichment activities,
Teams and Dreams lays a foundation for a
brighter, more promising future—ensuring
no child’s passion goes unrecognized or
unsupported. It’s not just about physical
or artistic growth, but about healing, selfdiscovery,
and personal development.
“Together, we can make a difference in
the lives of foster children and give them
the bright future they deserve,” says CEO/
Founder Chuck Mitchell.
“It's the support of our loyal
advertising partners, like The
Almonte Center that allow us
the opportunity to give back
to the communities we serve.”
In honor of our
20th year in business,
we're donating $1,000
each month (through January
2024) to local charitable
organizations and need YOU, our
