| editor’s letter | 

Is it strange that I keep a copy of STYLE on my nightstand and sometimes thumb 

through it before bed? My husband seems to think so (“Don’t you want to give 

your brain a break from work?”), but I find it to be an effective (easy, enjoyable, 

oftentimes educational) way to drift 

off to dreamland. A treasure trove of 

information and inspiration, each and every 

issue makes me feel happier, hungrier, and more 

connected to our community. 

And this month’s magazine—an unofficial ode 

to summer—is no different. From island-inspired 

eats (page 96) and sweet scoops (page 100) to the 

latest, greatest in pool design (page 64), it’s an extra 

colorful copy full of delicious discoveries and 

entertaining editorial. 

Here are just a few of the things that personally 

piqued my interest in the glossy print pages ahead: 

HOORAY FOR HOOPLA. I’ve always loved 

libraries, but it wasn’t until editing Jennifer 

Maragoni’s story, “Beyond Books” (page 18), that 

I realized all the fabulous freebies a local library 

card grants you. From complimentary California 

State Parks passes and access to the New York 

Times (including NYT Cooking and NYT Well!) 

to a streaming service called Hoopla (where you can watch fantastic, thought-provoking 

flicks like Past Lives, The Whale, and Big Eyes), the offerings are ample and unexpected. 

RULES THE SCHOOL. When we decided to run our inaugural “Teacher of the Year” 

contest, I wasn’t prepared for the abundance of inspiring, at times tear-jerking nominations 

we would receive. Picking a winner wasn’t easy—all educators are angels, after all—but 

when I read about Aaron MacDonald, our entire team knew he was “the one.” Keep the 

Kleenex close, and learn more about the sixth-grade math teacher and athletic director 

on page 24. 

O IS FOR OMAKASE. Chances are, you’ve heard about our region’s most-ravedabout 

newish restaurant: Omakase Por Favor. It’s one of the hottest tables in town and 

fast becoming a foodie favorite. While I knew of the eatery, I didn’t realize just how 

extraordinary it is. Ryan Martinez takes us on a “spiritual journey” (his words) through the 

fully chef-curated experience—which features a multi-course 

tasting menu plus wine pairings—beginning on page 92.

SUMMER BUCKET LIST. The next time someone asks, “What 

should we do today/this weekend?” turn to Sharon Penny’s piece, 

“Here Comes the Sun” (page 68). From unique activities for all

riding) to can’t-miss community events (lavender, peaches, and 

paddleboarding, oh my!) it’s jam-packed with over two dozen 

boredom busters and creative ways to beat the heat.

of Transportation is constructing 

a new pedestrian and bike path 

along the Pony Express Trail in 

Pollock Pines between Sanders Drive 

and Sly Park Road. Scheduled to be 

complete in September, the project

miles of Class II bike lanes on both 

sides of the trail, ADA and drainage 

improvements, crosswalks, and

The City of Roseville is seeking 

licensed contractors interested in 

bidding on housing repair jobs financed 

through their Housing Rehabilitation

housing occupied by low-income 

families, correct home health and 

safety problems, and help revitalize 

neighborhoods. The maximum amount 

of work per home is $100,000; types of 

repairs can involve electrical, plumbing,

Roseville, the upgraded medical facility 

will enable Placer SPCA's veterinary staff

Folsom’s Community Service Day, , an annual citywide event—this year on September 21— 

that mobilizes hundreds of volunteers of all ages to complete dozens of community service

can print one project per month. The

of PrintrBot Simple 3D Printers. Each 

kit includes a printer, filament, tools,

The famous expression, “Find a job you 

love, and you’ll never work again,” was 

written for Folsom Middle School’s Aaron 

MacDonald. As STYLE’s newly crowned 

“Teacher of the Year” for 2023/2024 says 

himself, “I absolutely love my job; when 

you love something so much, you don’t 

think of it as work. It’s my way of life. I want 

my classroom to be the happiest place on 

Earth…a safe place. I want the kids to want 

to go to school. I look forward to seeing 

them every day.” 

This passion for the role of teacher 

comes through in everything Aaron says. 

A word he returns to throughout our 

conversation is “connection.” Connecting 

with the students—be that in class or as 

a coach, before school, after school, or at 

lunchtime—is important to him. Aaron 

even goes to watch students in sports 

outside of school, such is the connection 

he builds. 

“Receiving this award is so humbling. I 

don’t feel I deserve it, as it’s just something 

I love doing.” 

Mr. MacDonald, to his students, is 

a sixth-grade math teacher as well as 

athletic director, coach of eighth grade 

girls’ volleyball and basketball, and head 

coach of track at Folsom Middle School. 

His love of teaching is evident through his 

involvement in so much of school life, but 

it wasn’t on his career horizon initially. 

He was a chemistry major at Graceland 

University in Iowa, a life-changing and 

wonderful experience, he tells me, as that’s 

where he met his late wife, Michelle. Upon 

graduation, he became a research scientist, 

which he didn’t enjoy, and it was a member 

of Michelle’s family who suggested he 

become a teacher. They had observed 

how well Aaron connected with children 

and although he couldn’t believe he was 

returning to the classroom, he now admits

Before arriving at Folsom 

Middle School, Aaron had 

been teaching at Carl H. 

Sundahl Elementary in 

Rancho Cordova for 14 years, 

spanning fourth and fifth 

grade over that time. A pull 

to try something different 

was what brought him to 

Folsom Middle School, 

where he’s been helping 

sixth-graders master math 

ever since. 

“I love teaching math. 

Some children can be 

fearful of it, so I love making 

fun lessons and [clever] ways 

for them to learn. And I’m 

happy to be a sixth-grade 

teacher, too. I like building 

connections with the kids 

when they first set foot on 

the campus, all wide-eyed 

as they start their middle 

school journey. I want their 

experience to be a great 

one. We laugh all the 

time! The kids are like my 

caffeine—they give me so 

much energy.” 

Energy is what he needs 

with his many roles in 

the athletic department. 

He always wanted to be a 

coach so was delighted 

when the opportunity 

arose to take care of girls’ 

volleyball, acquiring 

basketball responsibilities 

shortly thereafter and 

more recently, track and 

field. “What I love about 

track and field is that so 

many kids are involved, and 

we’re all working toward 

a common goal. It’s great 

hanging out with the kids 

and other coaches.” 

In October 2023, Aaron’s wife, Michelle, 

tragically passed away on their 27th wedding 

anniversary after a battle with cancer. Aaron 

speaks so fondly of Michelle, who was a teacher 

too, describing their 30 years together as the 

“most amazing of my life.” They had been 

unable to have children themselves, due to 

Michelle experiencing a molar pregnancy 

20 years ago, so the couple focused all their 

attention on the students they taught. 

“I looked after Michelle for some time at the end 

and found it hard not to be at school as much, but I was 

so supported—students, parents, other teachers, families I

was overwhelming. I was welcomed

As this school year draws to a 

close, Aaron is looking forward to 

August and a new school year, his 

26th in teaching. “Sure, I’ll enjoy a 

couple of weeks off, but then I’ll be 

ready to return. It’s boring without 

any sports to coach and watch. I 

obsessively plan over the summer 

and get excited about the kids I’m 

going to have in my classes. Of 

course, I look forward to coaching, 

too.” 

Some people are just born to be 

teachers and Aaron MacDonald is 

one of them, without a doubt. He 

sums it up perfectly: 

“I’m happy to have been voted 

‘Teacher of the Year,’ but I don’t do 

this to win awards. I teach because 

I love my students.”

Spotlight on 

Jacqué Price

Jacqué Price has been an artist all her life, 

but it wasn’t until her 30s that she had the 

confidence to pursue it full-time. Now she can’t 

imagine doing anything else. 

A member of the first graduating class of 

Union Mine High School in El Dorado, Price 

finds inspiration in her surroundings and 

within herself. From the Sierra foothills to the 

Lake Tahoe basin to her current home in Santa 

Cruz, Price (jacquepriceart.com) aims to shine 

a light on the human condition. “I’m inspired 

by our needs, our challenges, our hopes, and 

our wonder—the parts of ourselves that want 

to be seen and felt.” 

Her current bodies of work include curious 

wildlife, elegant abstracts, and tranquil 

modern landscapes. Her paintings are featured 

at Brass + Oak in Placerville, Piper J Gallery 

in Truckee, and online at artfuhome.com and

How did you get your start as an artist? 

I come from an artistic family and generations 

of painters. I was encouraged to express 

myself artistically from a very young age. 

As a kid, I created nonstop—doodles, forts, 

fashion shows, potpourri from flowers in my 

neighborhood. 

I graduated from college with a degree 

in studio fine arts with an emphasis in 

painting. I then spent years building a career 

in holistic health and hypnotherapy, with art 

as a hobby. But I was unfulfilled. I knew it was 

time to realize my dream of becoming a fulltime 

artist so I could feel alive, inspired, and 

purposeful again. 

In 2018, some friends and I started a 

project in Placerville called Scapegoat to get 

more art into the community. This led to my 

first art show in 10 years, where I sold several 

originals; it also gave me the confidence to 

quit my day job and sign up for an art fair at 

High Hill Ranch, where I worked for 12 hours a 

day, seven days a week for 13 weeks. Rain, sun, 

or snow, I was there painting, engaging with 

people, and selling paintings and prints. 

The following year, I moved to North Lake 

Tahoe and broadened my audience. I then 

became co-owner of an art collective in 

Truckee. Fast-forward to today, I’m living and 

working as a full-time artist in Santa Cruz.

urge to paint big bison and mountain 

landscapes. When I needed freedom, 

I was passionate about painting birds 

in flight. When I needed peace, I was 

drawn to painting meandering rivers. 

When I felt lost, I could only paint 

deserts and storms. Currently, I’m 

embracing my silly side and inviting 

more joy in my life, and I happen to 

be painting quirky birds and abstract 

landscapes in arbitrary colors. 

Describe your artistic process. 

It starts in my journal. Writing helps 

bring my emotions to the surface. Then 

I can create from an honest place. 

I never do rough drafts or 

miniature mockups. I dive right in. 

I like the risk, the intensity of the 

demand on my presence with each 

piece. I like to work out any issues 

that come up in real time. But I 

usually have a subject in mind. I start 

with a tiny, long-handled brush and 

compose an initial composition of 

the size and position of my subject. 

Then I look for references and photos 

to craft the details of the animal 

or ridgeline. From there, I rely on 

memory to fill in colors and textures. 

I don’t think much while I paint. I have 

a sense for what needs to be done and 

am trusting those instincts more and 

more. When a painting is finished, I 

feel refreshed and complete. There is 

nothing more to add or take away; the 

work has said what I needed it to say.

You primarily work in oils. What 

appeals to you about this medium? 

I fell in love with oil paint and its 

thick, buttery texture in college. Oil 

has a slow dry time, which allows me 

to work alla prima (wet on wet) for a 

few days. Texture is everything to me, 

so being able to re-work the paint 

while still maintaining a sophisticated 

surface is incredibly important. 

How do you choose your 

subjects? 

They come to me spontaneously 

and seem to move in rhythm with 

my internal process. When I needed 

more stability and security, I had the

personality. How do you bring 

out the unique personalities of 

each character? 

Their personalities are a 

combination of emotions, often 

conflicting ones. That a posture can 

read as both confident and troubled, 

or odd and elegant, or shy and bold 

is very true to our nature as humans. 

We are a paradox. I often feel a range 

of emotions at once, and painting 

a bird who feels the same way is so 

refreshing. 

What is the best compliment 

you could get about your art? 

That it did its job, and someone felt 

belonging in this human experience 

because of the joy or peace it brought 

up in them. Maybe then, one more 

person would live with more passion 

and purpose because they accepted 

their humanness and decided to 

make this life count.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, 

a timely reminder to consider your brain’s health. 

Just as you brush your teeth or go to the gym, 

your brain also needs to be cared for; and, as with 

other organs, it needs to be used to stay well. 

Many people tend to think of brain health as 

being a concern for older adults, but there 

really is no time like the present to make lifestyle 

changes that’ll help your brain now—and into the 

future. Healthy habits started in younger years 

will become a way of life and easy to continue in 

your daily life as you mature. 

We consulted local experts at UC Davis Health 

and Dignity Health to understand which habits we 

should start, and which we should kick, to keep 

our grey matter in tip-top condition. 

MOVE MORE 

Who knew going for that brisk 

walk, swim, or Pilates class 

were helping the brain, too? 

Exercising should be a part 

of everyone’s lifestyle for 

its de-stressing and weightmaintenance 

qualities, but 

as Kenneth Cheung, MD, of 

Dignity Health tells us, “Exercise 

increases blood flow to the brain, 

delivering oxygen and nutrients essential 

for cognitive function. Engage in moderate-intensity aerobic 

exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, or vigorousintensity 

exercise for 75 minutes per week.” 

BE SOCIAL 

Exercise can be a great way to be sociable, too. Social contact 


can range from just getting out of the 

house, going to the store and interacting 

with the cashier once a day, to going 

for a walk with a friend, joining a book 

club, or taking up a new hobby with a 

group of people. 

Being sociable boosts your mood 

and can help avoid or alleviate 

symptoms of depression. Social contact 

is a recognized factor in good brain 

health and good mental health—it will 

come as no surprise to know that brain 

health and mental health are cozy 

bedfellows.

SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL 

And speaking of bed, sleep is essential 

to keep the brain sharp. Cheung 

recommends aiming for 7-9 hours 

of quality sleep each night. “Sleep 

deprivation can impair cognitive 

function, including memory, attention, 

and decision-making.” 

Just as parents create a bedtime 

routine with children, you should 

create one for yourself. It might include 

a no-screen rule after a certain time, 

using essential oils, and/or reading. 

Routine is key, as it trains the brain for 

sleep. 

STOP SMOKING 

Smoking is bad for your health in 

every way and linked to dementia. The 

benefits start as soon as you stop no 

matter what age, so never think that it’s 

too late! 

Secondary smoke can impact 

other people, and we now know that it 

cannot only lead to poor lung health 

but compromised brain health, too. Air 

pollution, in general, is a factor toward 

poor brain health, so try to find fresh 

air as much as possible; and, yes, go for 

that hike! 

BACK OFF ON THE 

BOOZE 

It’s well known that alcohol can 

interrupt sleep patterns and quality of 

sleep, as well as impairing the brain and 

how it functions. Many reports on brain 

health focus on the damage of excessive 

alcohol consumption, so really look at 

how much you’re drinking in a week. 

Cutting back will help you gain clarity, 

sleep more soundly, and improve other 

areas of your life listed here (being 

active, quitting smoking once and for 

all, and eating well). If you’re concerned 

and struggling to cut back, speak to a 

medical professional. 

MANAGE STRESS 

Poor sleep, excessive alcohol, and 

smoking are all stressors on the body; 

when you add in family life and work 

issues, mental stress can mount up. 

“Practicing mindfulness through 

meditation or yoga can help calm the 

mind and reduce anxiety. Engaging in 

behavioral health interventions like 

cognitive-behavioral therapy can equip 

individuals with coping mechanisms 

to manage stress effectively. By 

implementing these strategies, 

individuals can promote a healthier and 

more resilient brain,” explains Cheung. 

KEEP USING YOUR 

BRAIN 

Social interaction is great for using your 

brain, but so is putting it to work. In 

some reports, the longer people work 

into old age, the better off their brain 

is. If the 9-5 is no longer an option, try 

tackling that harder Sudoku or more 

cryptic crossword, or even studying for 

a qualification in something that piques 

your interest. 

EAT A HEALTHY DIET 

Diet always comes up, doesn’t it, 

but that’s because it matters. It’s 

important for so many bodily 

functions—and your brain. Small 

changes can make a big difference 

toward blood-sugar levels and weight 

management, which in turn will lead 

to a healthier body and mind. 

• Could you increase your fruit 

and veggie intake? 

• How much sugar are you 

consuming? Diabetes is a risk 

factor for poor brain health. 

• When it comes to protein, are 

you “eating lean?” 

“A Mediterranean-style diet has 

been linked to improved brain 

health,” advises Cheung. 

BRUSH YOUR TEETH 

Brush your teeth, floss, go to the 

dentist—oral hygiene is more than 

just keeping your teeth sparkly white 

and without cavities. Bacteria from 

your mouth is known to be able to 

cross the blood/brain barrier and 

therefore impacts your brain health. 

So go make that appointment for a 

checkup! 

Many of these habits are linked, 

as is the case with so much of our 

health and well-being. Though 

small changes can have an impact, 

if possible, think of your whole 

self and consider a change to your 

lifestyle rather than just one aspect 

of your daily routine. It’s all just 

mind over matter.

My name is Jennifer Tommasini, the owner/director of The Gift 

of Kids Daycare and Preschool. I’ve lived in El Dorado Hills for 

over 20 years and I have four children. 

My journey into the childcare field began in 1999 when I was left 

disappointed in my search for ”the right” childcare for my son. 

After going through many programs and with my daughter on the 

way (now working with Gift of Kids), I began to reflect upon my 

family’s needs. It was then that I changed my career focus and 

ventured into childcare. My mission is to provide a nurturing, 

loving, safe and educational environment for every child. 

In September 2000, I opened my home to three newborns, two 

2-year-olds and a 3-year-old. I immediately knew that this was 

my calling. Everything felt so natural. I went back to school 

full time for early childhood education and started my own 

preschool program that incorporated home-cooked meals, 

planned outings, and practiced an advanced curriculum with 

structured activities that fostered learning. 

In 2007 I opened a small pre-school with 60 families while 

continuing my in-home daycare. In 2010 I expanded again, 

bringing my preschool and in home-daycare under one roof— 

The Gift of Kids and Preschool is now located off Latrobe 

Road in Business Park 1. It has been a dream to serve so 

many children and give families the satisfaction I never felt 

when my son was in daycare. I pride myself on offering a safe 

place for families to bring their children. 

We currently partner with programs that ensure best 

practices and work with local colleges when students need on 

site courses. 

The Gift of Kids currently has 35 wonderful, loving, 

professional teachers and over 200 children. We provide care 

for infants, preschoolers and private kindergarten. Although 

the size seems large, the classrooms have a homey feel where 

the teachers truly care about each child’s development. We 

work together on communicating with parents and developing 

each child’s individual needs. It delights me that so many 

children have the opportunity to experience our program.

For as long as he can remember, Randy 

Gove has always been fascinated by the 

beauty of the outdoors. 

In the summer of 1998, Randy worked 

closely with a contractor on a church 

playground project. That contractor 

quickly recognized his excellent people 

skills and intuitive eye for outdoor design 

and hired him. 

He spent the next twelve years perfecting 

those skills and immersing himself in the 

trade until finally stepping out on his

Cool Pools

With scorching temps and long 

summers stretching well into 

September, a home swimming pool 

in the Sacramento Valley comes 

in second only to a powerful air 

conditioning system. And they’re 

not just an investment for your 

comfort, they can also be a smart 

investment for your home’s resale 

value. If you’re considering making a 

splash, keep reading for the hottest 

trends in pool design and things to 

know before taking the plunge. 

TRENDS 

With backyards shrinking 

throughout the years, especially 

in new developments, so are the 

pools. “We’re seeing less and less 

of the massive, deep pools that 

used to be a common find in your 

neighbor's backyard,” says Brianne 

Boon, sales and design consultant 

at MJ Pools & Spas (poolsbymj. 

com). In their place, cocktail 

(aka, plunge) pools have become 

popular, thanks to their smaller 

size. Cocktail pools are generally 

10 feet by 20, or 12 feet by 25 and 

contain more seating space than 

a traditional pool, Boon tells us. 

Their small footprint and seating 

options make cocktail pools an 

excellent option for maximizing 

the usable space of a compact 

backyard. “These pools are more 

for low-key entertaining and 

cooling off on scorching summer 

days,” says Boon. 

Homeowners are also choosing 

single-depth and sports-style 

pools, which buck tradition by 

embracing a single depth of four 

to five feet spanning the length 

of the pool rather than a shallow 

end that transitions to a deep end. 

“More customers are choosing to 

maximize the shallow areas where 

pool users spend most of their 

time in the water,” says Brandon 

Sabillo, co-owner of Cookie Cutter 

Pools (cookiecutterpools.com). 

Clean lines and simple design 

characterize the modern pool 

aesthetic. “More homeowners are 

choosing linear and rectangular 

pools with raised wall sheer 

descent water features, unlike 

more traditional pools with 

rounded edges and rock water 

features,” says Sabillo. 

If you invest in a home pool, 

you might as well make it the only 

summertime destination you’ll 

need. That’s the prevailing thought 

putting upgraded features at the 

top of the trending list. Features 

like a Cabo shelf, color-changing 

LED lights, and water features 

create a resort-like experience at 

home. A Cabo shelf, also called a 

tanning ledge, is a shallow shelf at 

one end of the pool with a water 

depth between six to nine inches. 

As the name suggests, it’s prime 

tanning real estate, allowing you 

to catch some rays while keeping 

cool; it’s also the perfect spot for

Color-changing LED lighting takes night 

swims and backyard hangs to another 

level. “They give your pool a whole new 

vibe at night, with the ability to control 

them from your phone,” says Sabillo. 

If road noise dampens your backyard 

ambiance, adding a water feature—like 

a sheer descent water feature—is a great 

option. Gurgling water drowns out 

neighborhood noise and creates a spalike 

atmosphere. “Water features do not 

have to be an expensive upgrade either. A 

homeowner can add a simple bubbler (lit 

or unlit) in a Cabo bench for a reasonable 

cost,” says Boon. 

TIPS 

• Keep permits in mind when setting a start date 

for your pool project, advises Boon. Permitting 

varies depending on the city and county 

you reside in, but the process typically takes 

anywhere from three to six weeks, she tells us. 

• Speaking of permits, you also want to keep 

them top-of-mind when discussing budget and 

selecting features with your pool contractor. 

“The cost of permits varies based on the cost and 

scope of the project, so a big pool with lots of 

high-end features, like rock waterfalls, fire bowls, 

and spas, are going to incur higher permit fees 

than a small cocktail pool,” says Boon. 

• Get multiple bids before choosing a pool 

contractor, advises Boon. And carefully review 

the details of each bid individually. “Not every 

‘base pool’ includes the same items, and often 

it is the details that make the difference in the 

cost and quality of the product,” she warns. 

• Invest in the quality of your pool materials. 

“Cost-cutting” options, like basic and white 

plaster, have hidden costs. “Although those 

products may be several thousand dollars less 

at the time, these lower quality products will 

only last a few years before they begin to stain, 

crack, and discolor. The "less expensive" features 

will end up costing you more in the long run,” 

says Boon. In comparison, she says aggregate 

products, if properly cared for, will last 10-15 

years. Darker finishes and pebble finishes are 

more resilient over time, adds Sabillo.

Yes, they do. Unless they are an 

infant and will sit in your lap the 

entire rodeo, all rodeo fans must 

have a ticket. 

Due to fire marshal regulations, no 

strollers OR car seats are allowed 

in the arena. You can park your 

stroller near the entrance gates at 

the Bayside Stroller Pen. 

What should I bring to the rodeo? 

The Rodeo has a CLEAR BAG POLICY.

items in a clear plastic bag. 

A blanket to sit on (the cement 

bleachers can be warm)

Where’s the parking? 

Paid parking is available around 

the Folsom City Park. If you park 

near the arena, we ask that you 

are courteous to the neighbors by 

not blocking driveways or other 

access and PLEASE don’t leave 

any trash. 

Is there an after-party? 

As soon as the fireworks fade, the 

Saloon Under the Stars heats up 

with live country music. The 

saloon features a full-bar for those 

21 and older. The saloon is open 

until midnight. Dancing and fun is 

encouraged!

Christmas may be six 

months away, but now’s 

the prime time to start 

thinking about your holiday 

travel plans—especially 

if they entail a Christmas 

cruise around Europe.

I honestly never even thought of 

experiencing a European river cruise 

over the holidays, but something 

caught my eye. After doing my due 

diligence and, of course, getting 

the thumbs up from “the boss” (aka, my wife!), 

inquiries were made, our schedule cleared, and 

we were booked for a “Christmas Market” cruise 

with Riverside Luxury Cruises on one of Europe’s 

most celebrated rivers: the Danube. 

While Riverside may be new to cruising, they’re 

a storied travel business based in Germany. After 

entering the market, they purchased the now 

defunct Crystal cruise line’s river ships, which 

were held in the highest esteem. These were 

lovely, lavish ships to begin with, and after a good 

going over by the Riverside team, the vessels 

were ready to go—and we couldn’t wait! 

I’ve cruised the Rhine, Moselle, and Main 

Rivers through Europe and have to say that river 

cruising is easily my favorite way to vacation. 

What’s not to love? Smaller, more intimate ships, 

luxurious accommodations, and spectacular 

dining and entertainment. It’s simply a wonderful 

(and relaxing) way to see the world. 

If you’re worried in any way about sea sickness, 

stop: This adventure was aboard the largest of 

the river ships, the Mozart, and the best way to 

describe it is “floating on glass.” 

My initial impression of the Mozart was “wow!”

It’s clear every detail was impeccably 

considered, and the ship was simply 

fantastic. It’s important to know that this 

is an “all-inclusive” river cruise: top-flight 

dining, top-shelf wines and liquor, and 

all excursions were included. Riverside 

offers various ways to book and enjoy 

your cruise, so please check with your 

travel professional when booking. 

Our journey started in Vienna and 

took us to both small towns rich with 

history and character to larger cities 

that felt welcoming in every way. 

Here are my key takeaways for each 

port of call: 

Vienna 

While it’s unfair to condense anything 

about this city, as it’s truly one of 

Europe’s finest, Riverside (smartly) 

made sure we had plenty of time to see 

Vienna and all it has to offer. As you 

can imagine, it’s a beautiful city that's 

wonderful for walking, shopping, dining, 

and sightseeing. Having visited Vienna 

before, I can confirm that Riverside’s 

excursions were spot on, taking us to 

key locations, like Schönbrunn Palace, 

the grand concert halls, and providing 

tours of the take-your-breath-away 

city center. The Christmas markets 

were nothing short of spectacular, 

particularly the one at Schönbrunn 

Palace. To top it off, Riverside was able 

to get us into Midnight Mass at St. 

Stephan’s Cathedral—an experience we’ll 

always remember. An incredible city and 

an amazing few days, to say the least.

Tulln 

Once docked and after enjoying a 

wonderful breakfast on board, we had 

to make a choice: either a day trip to 

Salzburg or a walking tour of old town 

Krems with coffee and cake. Having 

visited Salzburg before, we opted for 

the walking tour. As first-timers to Tulln, 

we were wide-eyed and found Krems 

teeming with charm. Other excursions 

that day included “Vienna Woods,” 

which featured a boat trip on Europe’s 

largest underground lake and a visit to 

Heiligenkreuz Abbey (for history buffs 

this is a must-see). 

Dürnstein 

Known as the “Pearl of the Wachau” 

and sitting on one of the Danube’s 

most beautiful stretches, we strolled on 

cobblestone streets, enjoyed local wines 

(delicious!), and were treated to an

organ concert at the Dürnstein Abbey (Stift 

Dürnstein). Sound like a wonderful, relaxing 

day? My description doesn’t do it justice. 

Esztergom 

Located at the Danube Bend, the most 

photographed part of the river, we visited the 

castle ruins of Visegrád, the formal royal seat of 

Hungary. It’s places and tours like this that you 

find yourself short on adjectives. Let’s just say it 

was spectacularly beautiful with an enthralling 

history—an experience not to be missed. 

Budapest 

My first time in Budapest was over two 

decades ago, and I was interested to see 

the changes. First off, I can tell you that the 

one constant is the exquisite architecture. 

Visiting cities like Budapest, Prague, Vienna, 

and so many others remind me that our own 

U.S. history and architecture are so young in 

comparison. 

Budapest is, without a doubt, one of my 

favorite cities to explore. The Jewish Quarter 

and Great Synagogue, the Castle District, the 

Royal Palace, and what may have been my 

favorite visit of the trip: the Hungarian State 

Opera House. Riverside put together a miniopera 

performance for our group that was 

simply superb. And the tour and history of the 

main hall was breathtaking; photos don’t do it 

justice—you must see it for yourself. 

We did our own walking tour on day two, 

exploring the Great Market Hall and checking 

out all the terrific shops the city has to offer. 

There were so many excursions to choose 

from: the Royal Palace of Gödöllő, St. 

Stephen’s Basilica, Kossuth Square, and the 

Hungarian Parliament Building, to name a few. 

Having visited Europe extensively, I can say 

without question that Budapest resides near 

the top of “my favorite European cities” list. 

Bratislava 

This was our second time in this city, the last 

being 22 years ago. We found it then to be 

a city, like many in Eastern Europe at that 

time, transitioning from being behind the iron 

curtain, to one breaking out and finding the 

light of freedom. It’s a wonderful thing to see, 

as it’s another jewel of Europe. 

Our walking tour was about two hours 

and allowed us to soak in the city—one full 

of history and architecture—that are both 

familiar and yet so different. 

Melk 

Our tour in Melk was the perfect way to see 

our Christmas cruise come to an end. Baroque 

architecture, a stunning abbey, and spectacular 

views of the Wachau Valley. A perfect ending to 

a wonderful Christmas vacation.

here’s food that satisfies 

a physiological need, 

and there’s food that satisfies 

an existential need. The latter 

transcends hunger and borders 

on something even more 

fundamental and significant to our 

human existence: an interaction 

with the soul. That’s the best way I 

can describe my meal at Omakase 

Por Favor. 

A Japanese raw bar founded 

on the traditional coastal cuisine 

of Mexico, Omakase has a touch 

of fusion, but I would argue 

that some of the plates hint to 

something new entirely. 

Omakase, a Japanese word that 

literally translates to “I leave the 

details up to you,” means you get a 

fully chef-curated experience. In the 

case of Lincoln’s new hit restaurant, 

it also means the menu may change 

several times a week depending on 

ingredient availability. Excellence is 

executed in every plate when you

years of professional experience, 

she’s created something that’s far 

more impressive than the fact that 

she’s traveled the world, won major 

TV network cooking shows, and is 

only 28 years old. I mean it when I 

say there’s something special here. 

My wife and I were guided to try 

the raw bar to start: a half-dozen raw 

Soba Noodle Bowl 

oysters, two scallops with pickled daikon, 

and an ahi tuna crudo with soy caramel, 

basil, and finely diced strawberries. Then 

the real show began. Our “Omakase” 

(tasting) dinner was made up of snow crab 

inari, a lemon miso broiled scallop, lox 

bagel chip, octopus and frijoles, and a 

mini soba noodle bowl. 

Considering the menu’s fluidity, I 

wouldn’t do it justice describing each 

dish. What’s more important is the ethos 

upon which each plate was made. The 

restaurant aims to be zero-waste—and 

is highly successful in doing so. The 

lemon miso broiled scallop epitomized 

this mission, where leftover lemon peels 

were used to infuse the miso for what 

was probably the best scallop I’ve tasted 

in my life.

something I would have never 

considered, and I would say this 

is a fundamental part of the entire 

evening: discovery.

the dish true to the fusions it represented, 

but everything about it seemed authentic 

to the chef, as if it was a synthesis of her life 

experience and an edible self-expression, 

making it clear why food can be art. 

The staff, service, and overall 

experience were nothing short of worldclass, 

yet the people and the environment 

relaxed and approachable, alleviating any 

questions or concerns we had about the 

unique, new-to-us dishes. The intimate 

space allowed us to talk to everyone, 

including the chef, and each interaction 

was like communicating with an old, 

incredibly knowledgeable friend. It’s 

certainly casual fine dining, but the food 

and service exceed anything you could 

describe as “casual.” 

The wine pairing is a must for 

oenophiles. As we learned about each 

pour—their worldwide origins, the cultures 

that created them, and the 

idiosyncrasies of their 

flavors—we couldn’t help 

but say to ourselves: “Now 

we can brag that we ate 

at Omakase before Chef 

Jeana earned her first 

Michelin star.” And we 

meant it.

Pizza, but better. Prepare your taste buds for artisan pies 

perfected by 13-time pizza champion Tony Gemignani, who 

has delivered his authentic recipes from San Francisco to 

Folsom. Slice House offers four styles of handmade crust 

and over 20 clever topping combos—from Hot Honey (tomato sauce, mozzarella, 

thick and thin pepperoni, Italian sausage, and house-made local hot honey) to Purple 

Potato (mozzarella, sliced purple potatoes, applewood smoked bacon, rosemary, feta, 

and pesto swirl). Are you craving a rustic Sicilian or buttery Detroit-style crust, but

meatball subs, pasta, salads, wings, fine wine, and craft drafts. For a real 

steal, try their all-day pickup promo—available Sunday-Thursday— 

where, for $33, you can enjoy an extra-large cheese or pepperoni pizza,

Volunteer Spotlight: 

DONNA TRUMBO 

SeeMYchild, whose tagline 

is “ensuring every 

child is seen, heard, 

and loved,” truly believes in 

living out the African proverb 

"It takes a village to raise a 

child." By showcasing the 

phenomenal feats of youth, 

coordinating community events 

that acknowledge momentous 

cultural occasions—including 

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and 

Juneteenth—and facilitating 

courageous conversations 

focused on DEIB (diversity, 

equity, inclusion, and belonging), 

the organization aims to build 

open, healthy, and inclusive 

communities that allow students 

to thrive. The nonprofit also 

helps high school students 

develop their leadership skills 

and provides scholarships 

to graduating seniors who 

demonstrate financial need.

What made you want to become a 

volunteer for seeMYchild? When I 

was younger, I got teased for being 

Asian, and there was no support 

system to remind me that it was 

okay to be me in a predominately 

white environment. Knowing your 

identity and being proud of it is 

something every child, parent, 

teacher, co-worker, boss, and 

community leader deserves. Raising 

awareness about embracing one’s 

identity through special events 

can transform the way we look at 

one another and bring our diverse 

community together. 

What do your volunteer duties 

entail? I help facilitate educational 

forums and coordinate booths at 

seeMYchild’s community events. 

Is there training required? No. 

What’s the time commitment? 

Volunteers should expect to join 

weekly, one-hour event prep 

meetings, and be available to help 

about eight hours on event days. 

What’s been the best day of 

volunteering so far? This past 

January, seeMYchild hosted the 

sixth annual Placer County MLK, Jr. 

Day March & Family Celebration. 

I’ve watched the event grow from 

roughly 150 participants to 400. 

It’s so exciting, heartwarming, and 

encouraging to see the community 

support our events. 

What’s one of the biggest 

challenges? The most pressing need 

is bringing a fund developer on 

board, ensuring seeMYchild can grow 

its programming and employees. 

The goal is to eventually have a brick 

and mortar: a safe environment for 

youths to build relationships, gain 

self-esteem, and thrive.
