They are all important to us and we want to
progress this evening to maintain our interest
and, of course, our grip on the Bristol Street
Motors Trophy.
It’s a competition that has very special memories
for us because of what we achieved last season
and, because we are Bolton Wanderers, we are
expected to win.
This fixture won’t be easy and I welcome Andy
Crosby, his staff, players and the Port Vale fans
who make the trip up tonight.
They have done very well in cup football this
season and made life difficult for us at times
when we won there in the league at the end of
September.
We will have to deal with the questions they ask of
us and then look to bring our qualities to the
fore to hopefully record another win and
make it into the last 16 in January.
We already have one cup tie to look
forward to early next year after
reaching the third round of the
FA Cup. Make no mistake, I was
really pleased with Saturday’s
win over Harrogate and
the fact we progressed –
something the Club hasn’t
done very often in recent
years.
I said afterwards that overall the
performance was just okay, purely
because of the standards the players
have been setting themselves. We
were a little slack in dealing with their
transitions and counter-attacks at
times and disappointed with the way
we conceded the goal to miss out on
the chance of the outright record for
clean sheets.
I also felt we could have gone on
and scored more goals – as we
did against Exeter. But when we’re
picking holes in a 5-1 win, it’s a
pretty good place to be. It’s the
players who have raised the bar as

high as it is so if they do dip below on occasions, I
will tell them.
The win over Harrogate has earned us a trip to
Luton Town in round three. It’s a tough tie against
Premier League opposition but one we will relish
when it gets here.
We want to test ourselves against top-class
opposition and this gives us the chance
to do that. I will also look forward
to taking on Rob Edwards, their
manager who is a good friend and
former team-mate of mine from our
Blackpool days.
It’s a busy time but we’re not
complaining at the fixture list. Doing
well in the league is our undoubted
priority but we want to do well in
the cup competitions as well – and
I believe we have the strength and
quality in the squad to do so.
Plymouth and Rotherham have proved
in the last couple of seasons that it is
possible to go to Wembley in the EFL
Trophy and win promotion as well. It is
doable so as long as that is a possibility,
we will be striving for both.

PORT VALE
IT’S BEEN VERY MUCH CHALK AND
CHEESE FOR VALE SO FAR THIS SEASON
IN TERMS OF LEAGUE AND CUP FORM.
A positive start to their League One campaign
saw the Valiants in second position after seven
games – a position many wouldn’t have been
predicted given the 7-0 thrashing they suffered
on the opening day against Barnsley.
They bounced backed superbly with five wins
and a draw but since beating Northampton in
mid-September, Andy Crosby’s side haven’t picked
up a league win since – losing 1-0 at home to
Wanderers as part of that run - and now find
themselves hovering just above the drop zone.
That form contrasts sharply with what Vale have so
far achieved in the cup competitions, where they
are still standing on all fronts.
In the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, Vale reached
this stage of the competition and tonight’s last-32
tie at Wanderers by finishing as runner-up in Group
B. A win against local rivals Crewe, a draw against
Newcastle United U21s and a defeat against
Wrexham was enough to progress.
In the FA Cup, the Valiants drew with Burton Albion
before beating the Brewers away to secure a tie
with Stevenage in the second round. That meant
a tough trip to high-flying Boro last Saturday but a
1-1 draw kept Vale in the Cup with a replay to come
to determine who will go to non-league Maidstone
United in round three.
Most impressively, Vale have made club history by
reaching the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup
for the first time. A fantastic run of results against
Fleetwood, Crewe, Sutton United and Mansfield
has set up an exciting home fixture against
Championship side Middlesborough in the last
eight in the week before Christmas.
A victory in that tie would guarantee Premier
League opposition in the semi-finals with Everton,
Fulham, Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool and West
Ham the others still all in with a chance of lifting
the Carabao Cup.
So, while Vale might not be hitting the heights
they’d like in League One, their cup pedigree this
term means Wanderers won’t take the test lightly
as Ian Evatt’s men bid to continue their defence of
the Trophy.

ANDY CROSBY IS IN
HIS FIRST FULL-TIME
MANAGERIAL ROLE
BUT IS STEEPED
IN FIRST-TEAM
EXPERIENCE.
As a player, Crosby made over 700 club
appearances as a defender for half-a-dozen
different clubs.
He was a promotion winner with Brighton and
Scunthorpe, twice, as well as playing over 100
games for Oxford United and more than 200 for
Darlington.
After moving into a coaching role at Scunthorpe
in 2006, he was then also on the staff at Reading,
Southampton and Sheffield United.
The 50-year-old worked at international level with
Northern Ireland’s U21s before joining Port Vale in
March, 2021.
After spells as assistant and caretaker-manager,
Crosby was then appointed Vale boss in May this
year with an early highlight the club’s run to the
quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

WANDERERS’ ANNUAL CHRISTMAS
CAROL SERVICE WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE
TOUGHSHEET COMMUNITY STADIUM NEXT
MONDAY NIGHT (11TH DECEMBER).
Held in the Premier Suite on the same evening
that the Whites take on Portsmouth in a
televised top-of-the table clash, concert-goers
will have the opportunity to remain in the suite
after the service to watch the action at Fratton
Park on a big screen (KO 8pm). Please note
doors to the Premier Suite will close for the
evening at 7pm.
Working closely once again with Alfa Education,
choirs from local schools will perform classic
carols, Club Chaplain Phil Mason will lead the
service and special guests will be in attendance,
including members of the Bolton community and
Wanderers’ mascot Lofty the Lion.
With refreshments available throughout the
evening, the Wellbeing Hub will also be open and
accepting donations for a foodbank Christmas
collection, in partnership with Utilita Giving,
to be sent to Emmaus Bolton.
In addition, the club shop will have late opening
hours for guests to browse festive Wanderers gift
ideas.

Doors will open at 6.15pm, with the service starting
at 6.45pm. Tickets are now on sale at £2 for adults
