Welcome from the Headmaster In December 2022, The Sunday Times named Shrewsbury School in a list of the Top 10 Most Generous Independent Schools. This welcome recognition of our culture of philanthropy was based on the School’s spending on bursaries and financial support to allow a vibrant variety of children to join the Salopian community. It is important that we widen access to a Shrewsbury education. We are deeply grateful to all those who support our efforts so generously. As well as the pursuit of ‘serious fun’, we believe strongly in the ‘survival of the kindest’ – a culture that runs deep in the Salopian DNA. Not only do we want to provide a diversely challenging whole person education for all the 840 or so teenage Salopians, but we also want to foster future leaders who go out into the world with confidence to deliver change for the better. Social responsibility and public benefit are at the heart of what we do. Our mission is to educate and empower the children in our care to flourish in life and contribute positively to the world around them. The academic year 2022 — 2023 has seen the School continue to adapt and meet the challenges of a fast-moving world. In the year that our boys’ football team reached the final of the England Schools’ FA Cup, our academic and Futures programme saw 30% of our leavers move on to World Top 50 universities, as well as a range of other excellent destinations and fields of work. We have continued to invest in the infrastructure of our wonderful site, with the completion of our fifth girls’ house as the overall number of girls in the school went beyond 320. There has been parallel investment in boys’ accommodation, with work on all houses and major refurbishments and extensions to Churchill’s Hall and Ingram’s Hall. Port Hill and Radrook celebrated a strong final year as we moved to a fully integrated house system. The two new all-weather pitches are named after these day boys’ houses that formed such a key part of the school for a 38 year chapter in our long history. The growing group of Shrewsbury International Schools expanded further with the announcement of the latest project, Shrewsbury International India, a full boarding school to be situated in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, in central India. With the economic and political headwinds blowing increasingly strongly on all institutions, not least independent boarding and day schools such as ours, we continue to value greatly the philanthropic giving which forms such a key element in allowing us to provide excellence in the pupil experience and pursue our ongoing commitment to widening access through transformative bursaries. We want to reach the point where a visitor could pop into any classroom of 20 pupils and know that there was a least one pupil in the room on a transformative bursary. We are well on the way to that target. The more diverse our community, the fuller the experience for all our pupils. Investment in the site and facilities benefits our pupils and staff, and is shared with almost 50 different state school partners, through our nationally-recognised Partnership and Community Engagement programme, as well as our ongoing support of The Shewsy, our youth and community club in Liverpool. As a Champion School of the School Partnerships Alliance, we are in the centre of national efforts to drive school improvement across the education system. We are part of the solution, rather than part of the problem, as some may suggest. From the Chair When I left Shrewsbury in 1984, I had no idea how much I would come to draw on the learning, teaching, friendships, skills and experience I had gained from my time at The Schools. That was why when the School approached me to become Chair of the Shrewsbury School Foundation in 2019, and subsequently to become Chair of the Governing Body in 2023, I was delighted not only to step forward, but also to make a commitment to the School’s future by joining The Leadership Circle, and making a gift to Campaign 2020 – 2030. It is my privilege to share the opportunity to join our global community of donors; if your name already features on the Donor Roll in the following pages, recognising your commitment to Campaign 2020 – 2030, I extend my sincere thanks to you for your support. If you are considering making a gift, it can be made flexibly and in the manner most convenient and tax efficient for you. My colleagues in the Development Office, whose details are listed, will be delighted to assist you in taking the next steps on your pathway to becoming part of the Campaign 2020 – 2030 success story. The Shrewsbury Development Office has continued to be very active worldwide this year, connecting with thousands of members of our community through individual meetings, events and engagement activities. The results speak for themselves, producing in excess of £1 million of in-year cash donations for the Shrewsbury School Foundation and more than £3 million in onward pledge commitments to the current campaign. In total, the Campaign 2020 – 2030 has now raised over £10 million in committed funds in direct support of the School. This year’s Fundraising Telephone Campaign reached over 1,000 members of our global community of alumni, parents, friends and supporters, and secured more than £300,000 of new and additional gifts, 94% of which are regular gifts, providing predictable and recurring philanthropic income. All of these gifts are directed to The Means Tested Bursary Fund, which remains our through-focus for Campaign 2020 – 2030, enabling a Shrewsbury education for qualified children who might not otherwise be able to attend the School. If you were amongst those who took the call for support, the Impact Report in the following pages shows how these gifts are used and highlights just how much every gift counts.
