Historic facts
Friedrichshafen town The town roots reach back to the foundation of the
Alemannic village Alt-Buchhorn in the 5th century.
In 1811 King Friedrich of Württemberg united Buchhorn together with the
village and the monastery Hofen under Friedrichshafen town and residence
with altogether 750 inhabitants. In 1824 the first steamboat appeared on
Lake Constance and on 2 July 1900 the take-off of the first Zeppelin airship
introduced a new era that has stayed eminent in our town to this very day.
In 1915 the airship airport Löwental was opened and turned into a civilian
airport in 1928. Since 1929 the former railway ferry has taken also cars and
lorries to Romanshorn. In 1933 the Hafenbahnhof (harbour station) was
finished. After the Hindenburg disaster at Lakehurst on 6 May 1937, where
36 people died in the explosion of the LZ 129, the construction of further
airships as well as the flight operation of the zeppelins was stopped.
During 1943/45 Friedrichshafen was almost completely destroyed by air
raids. After the war the reconstruction phase was influenced by companies
such as ZF Friedrichshafen, MTU Friedrichshafen, Zeppelin GmbH and
Dornier group. In 1950 Friedrichshafen staged the first IBO (international Lake
Constance fair) followed by the opening of the first “Interboot” (international
boat fair) in 1962 and many further exhibitions that found a new home in the
spacious exhibition centre near the airport in July 2002.
In 1985 the growing town of Friedrichshafen created a place for culture
and exchange – “Graf-Zeppelin-Haus”, the new culture and congress centre.
Another top sight was opened in 1996, the “Zeppelin Museum” in the former
Hafenbahnhof (harbour station), presenting the world´s largest collection on
the history of airship navigation. 100 years after the first ascent of the “flying
giants” the Zeppelin era could be continued. Since 2001 the Zeppelin NT
has glided silently with its passengers over the Lake Constance region. In
2003 the now called ZF Arena, a multifunctional hall for up to 4,000 people
opened, followed by the new media centre K42 on the lakeside promenade
in 2006. In 2007 Friedrichshafen became Germany´s first T-City as a result of
a competition of the “Deutsche Telekom AG”. Since the summer of 2009 the
new Dornier Museum has become a further highlight in the Friedrichshafen
cultural scene. In 2011 Friedrichshafen celebrated its 200th anniversary. Also
the Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG won the biggest order in its
company history: 3 new Zeppelin NT for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
In 2012 various events were held to celebrate 100 years of seaplane
construction in Friedrichshafen. At present Friedrichshafen has approx.
59,000 inhabitants.
Friedrichshafen highlights
The Schlosskirche (palace church) with its two 55 m high domed towers
made from Rorschach sandstone is the landmark of Friedrichshafen. It was
built by Christian Thumb from 1695 to 1701 and belongs to the famous Upper
Swabian baroque buildings. Since 1812 it has been a protestant church. In
1944 it was partly destroyed by air raids, reconstructed from 1947 to 1951 and
then given back to the protestant community.

Schloss (palace) The palace was originally built as a convent priory by Michael
Beer from Vorarlberg (Austria) in 1654. The monastery was closed down
in 1802. Under the reign of Wilhelm I. of Württemberg it was reconstructed
from 1824 to 1828 and then used as a summer residence for the Württemberg
kings. Now residence of Friedrich Duke of Württemberg – no inside
viewing possible.
Zeppelin flights With the take-off of the first Zeppelin airship on 2 July
1900 a new era started in Friedrichshafen leaving a lasting impact on the
town. About a 100 years after the first “flying giants“ the Zeppelin era was
continued with the Zeppelin NT cruising over the Lake Constance region
since 2001. 12 different routes are on offer with a flight duration between
30 minutes and 2 hours.

Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen Everybody can be a pioneer – this
is the central message of the Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen. Situated next
to Friedrichshafen airport, the museum opened in the summer of 2009, offering
a 100 years of aviation and aerospace history as a fascinating experience.
The extraordinary architecture accommodates almost 400 exhibits on 5000
sqm, including 12 original aircraft, 7 exhibits from space travel and a full-size
model. Pioneering spirit at your fingertips – for all those who are interested in
technology and history, for families as well as all friends of aviation.

Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen „Technology and Art”
Situated in the historic harbour station building this museum presents the
world‘s largest collection on the subject of airship history, construction and
travel. Under the same roof you can visit an important collection of art dating
from the late Middle Ages to the present day. The main attraction is the 33 m
long reconstruction of part of LZ 129 Hindenburg in its original size, which
visitors can board just as the original passengers did in the 30‘s. The authentically
fitted passenger rooms give an impression of how people travelled
during the period of the “silver giants”. Two entire storeys of the Zeppelin
Museum are dedicated to different aspects of Zeppelin history and technology.
In addition to the permanent exhibition the museum organizes special

At the Schulmuseum Friedrichshafen (school museum) it´s like going
back to school. During your visit you will find out how schools developed
and what classrooms looked like in 1850, 1900 and 1930. Historic teaching
materials and quaint exhibits like old slate pencil boxes, satchels and the big
cardboard cones filled with sweets and little presents received on the first
day of school, bring back fond memories of long-gone schooldays. On the
two seater school bench you can try out writing on slates. Negative aspects
of former school life are represented too, for example how discipline and
obedience were enforced on pupils by caning, shaming them on a wooden
donkey or making them kneel on a three-sided piece of wood.

Feuerwehrmuseum (fire brigade museum) in Friedrichshafen-Ettenkirch.
The former equipment house of the fire brigade Ettenkirch contains a small
but nice exhibition. You can follow the process of a fire alarm, from a nostalgic
fire detector and the so called “Weckerlinie“ (alarm line) to protective clothing
from different decades and fire engines from the turn of the century. No fixed
opening hours.

The Kunstverein (art association) exhibits modern art and at the same
time offers a forum for discussing contemporary art of all kinds of styles. The
association organises six exhibitions a year for young artists in its premises at
the Buchhornplatz and one large exhibition every two years with nationally
as well as internationally renowned artists in the exhibition area for changing
exhibitions in the Zeppelin Museum. The Kunstverein also offers studio visits,
talks with artists and trips to important art fairs and exhibitions at home and
abroad.

The lakeside promenade from the Rotach delta to the Schloss (palace)
with a beautiful panoramic view over Lake Constance and the Alps – one of
the longest and most attractive promenades on Lake Constance. Here you
will also find the boat and ferry harbour, the shipyard wharf, the demonstration
harbour during the “Interboot” as well as the Gondelhafen (gondola
harbour) and the marina of the Württemberg yachting club.
Medienhaus k42 (media centre) The combined shopping and media
centre k42 is undoubtedly a spectacular building on the lakeside. The glass
front reflects transparency and openness. The absolute highlight of the
building complex is the round pebble-shaped event location „Kiesel“ (pebble)
staging regular events such as readings, theatre plays and concerts.
Aussichtsturm (viewpoint tower) at the boat harbour. Enjoy the unique
panoramic view from the 22 m high viewing platform, built in 2000, over the
town and the Schlosskirche, the fruit orchards as well as the Swiss and the
Austrian Alps. A panoramic board newly installed in 2010 on top of the viewpoint
tower offers a detailed view of the mountain range across the lake.
Klangschiff (boat of sound). After its long journey to Sarajevo, the twin
town of Friedrichshafen, the Klangschiff finally dropped anchor. Created by
the Breisgau artist Helmut Lutz it was handed over to the town of Friedrichshafen.
It is situated on the lakeshore next to the marina. During the Kulturufer
(annual festival on the promenade, see p. 40) it is often integrated into artist
and music programmes.
Zeppelin-Denkmal (monument). Not far from the fountain, situated
in the lakeside park, the Zeppelin monument was created in honour of the
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin by the sculptor Professor Toni Schneider-Manzell
who was born in Friedrichshafen-Manzell.
Zeppelin Brunnen (fountain). Like a miracle the fountain figure stayed
almost untouched during the Second World War. In the year 2000, the 100year
anniversary of the Zeppelin, the fountain was reconstructed according to
the original, built in 1909.
Friedrichshafen highlights
Buchhornbrunnen (fountain). Since Sept 2001 the fountain, which was
designed by the artist couple Rumpf, has decorated the square situated in
front of the town hall. The stylized tree, a beech tree together with a horn
lying in the fountain basin, symbolizes the word “Buchhorn”, the original name
of Friedrichshafen. The other figures show the industrial development of the
town.
ZF Arena Friedrichshafen Hall for sports and other events. In 2003 hall
1 of the former exhibition centre was rebuilt to a multi-functional hall with
grandstand and balcony for up to 4,000 people. Since then the event hall
has been used amongst other things for concerts and top sports events. For
example, it is the venue of the multiple German Volleyball Champion, the VfB
Friedrichshafen, for its games in the Champions League and the 1st German
Volleyball League.
Shopping in Friedrichshafen
The lively town on Lake Constance offers a great shopping experience.
Browsing through young fashion shops or having a coffee with a panoramic
view on lake and the alps – here you can combine both. And if you haven´t
had enough after the shopping tour in the centre of town, the Bodensee
Center offers more shopping and varied evening entertainment with different
restaurants, cinema and a bowling centre – and after the shops are closed
Friedrichshafen is a great place for going out and enjoying yourself.
Weekly markets offer local produce and specialities of the Lake Constance
region and a colourful hustle and bustle (see p. 30), Tuesday mornings on the
Charlottenhof and Friday mornings on the Adenauerplatz. There is also the
culinary market on the Adenauerplatz every Saturday from 9am to 2pm with
mediterrean flair and seasonal highlights in every month. You can also buy
local products directly from the producers in various farm shops (see p. 34/35).
And in December the smell of mulled wine and gingerbread lies in the air at
the Christmas market on the Buchhornplatz with its festively decorated stalls
in a lovely setting of snow-covered alps.

Hiking in and around Friedrichshafen
Tracing history The town of Friedrichshafen can be explored in many
ways. Themed trails such as the Zeppelin Trail on town development in the
20th century (opened in 2008), the Maybach Trail as well as the 3 km long historic
trail with 50 information signs present to all, who are interested, all facets

Bodenseepfad (Lake Constance Trail). In the Eriskirch nature reserve and
along the Friedrichshafen lakeside promenade walkers can find out more
about flora and fauna and scenic attractions of the Lake Constance area
on illustrated signs. The Eriskirch nature reserve also shows exhibitions on

the Eriskircher Ried, the largest nature reserve along the northern shore of
Lake Constance. Starting points of this trail in Friedrichshafen are the lakeside
bath, the harbour station and the youth hostel at the Rotach. In Eriskirch the
trail´s starting point is the nature reserve centre which is located in the former
station of Eriskirch. Since spring 2011 the centre has been presenting a new
attractive permanent exhibition “Natural Paradise Eriskirch Reed”, which is
interesting for children and grown ups alike. A multimedia show with

The 12.5 km long Ortsrundweg Kluftern (Kluftern Round Trail) is a
varied art, nature and historic trail in the shape of a large eight, leading back
to the history of the village through the Middle Ages to the Stone Age. It
passes by legendary sites, old buildings and meadow orchards, biotopes as
well as large sculptures of well-known local artists. Viewpoints, benches and a
barbecue area invite you to pause. The roung trail connects Efrizweiler, Kluftern
and Lipbach and is an important part of the OberschwabenKunstweg
(Upper Swabia Art Trail) between Fischbach and the Mittlere Schussental (valley).

Panoramaweg Ailingen (scenic path) Starting from the townhall in
Ailingen via Unterlottenweiler towards Horach, the highest point of Friedrichshafen
with a beautiful panoramic view over the lake and the alps. Past
the Höhlerösch, a protected fruit meadow, you come to the Haldenbergkapelle
(chapel), which is situated on top of the Haldenberg with probably the
best view in the whole of Friedrichshafen. From the chapel you walk past
idyllic meadows down to the Fasanenweg, then onto the Haldenweg and the
Gartenstraße, which leads you straight to the small park at the townhall. This
route as well as further hiking routes around Ailingen can be found in the Ailingen
