EVOLUTION OF BEAUTY IN SOCIETY THROUGH THE MEDIUM<br />

OF ART, PHOTOGRAPHY, CINEMA AND, OF COURSE,<br />

THE WORLD OF HAIRDRESSING.<br />

DEFINING BEAUTY is a theme of our<br />

times. The mere word itself opens up a<br />

plethora of ideas and reflections on<br />

endless aspects of our society. The Cult of<br />

Beauty is an exhibition at the Wellcome<br />

Collection in London and runs until 28<br />

April 2024. It explores definitions of<br />

beauty through time and culture,<br />

highlighting the profound influence that<br />

morality, status, age, race and gender have<br />

had on the evolution of the concept.<br />

Among the over 200 objects and works of<br />

art, there is also a large section dedicated<br />

to hair: worth mentioning is the focus on<br />

cultural traditions in both Nigeria and the<br />

Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI)<br />

community, as well as This Hair of Mine<br />

(2017) - a film directed by internationally<br />

acclaimed hairstylist, Cyndia Harvey.

goes out of style - the ‘buzz cut’- but<br />

this time with a twist. Opting for an<br />

all over cut, my vision was to create<br />

something a little more unique, adding<br />

a slight lift at the front section, which<br />

gives portrays a vision of a ‘ledge’.<br />

This slight addition gives the hair so<br />

much more depth and allows the<br />

individual to bring their classic look into<br />

the modern day, with something a little<br />

Kingneth, who is an autistic child.<br />

and break down, but this is a form of<br />

instinctive protection. From the other<br />

side, they are kind and gentle; they<br />

will instinctively protect themselves<br />

like hedgehogs – hence my spiky shape<br />

very fortunate to be in an era where<br />

the male grooming market is progressing<br />

at such an exceptional rate, trends are<br />

continuously being unveiled and clients<br />

are becoming much more experimental.<br />

This image created by the <strong>2023</strong> Project<br />

Men team is a true representation of<br />

the market currently. Whilst different<br />

textures, lengths and volumes are<br />

becoming much more on trend, the<br />

classic barbering techniques are still<br />

very much present. This image<br />

showcases the partnership of old and<br />

new – the close head shave and blend,<br />

with the longer length and texture used<br />

very low taper keeping the length in the<br />

rest of the hair so I could really use<br />

product to enhance the curls. My<br />

inspiration for this look was having a<br />

strong shape. Making a shape in a<br />

hairstyle by keeping the hair long and<br />

tapered in the edges. I love this image<br />

because of the way the hair sits around<br />

part of our Lustre collection, inspired<br />

by 70s disco vibes! We wanted to<br />

using a wig made from rubber. I spray<br />

painted it with silver paint and<br />

then by stretching it, created a really<br />

distressed effect and the illusion of<br />

● SKINFADED QUIFF. “The skinfaded<br />

quiff is a combination of two classic<br />

elements: the fade, where the back of the<br />

head and sides are cut extremely short<br />

or shaved. The characteristic quiff on<br />

top instead consists of longer hair styled<br />

■ ROCKABILLY TED. “I love my take on<br />

the Rockabilly haircut. I was inspired<br />

by a mix of the New Romantics and the<br />

Teddy Boys. Guys during both eras took<br />

pride in the way they dressed and would<br />

take a lot of time and effort to make<br />

their hair follow suit. Bauhaus and<br />

The Stray Cats were also an inspiration<br />

for this haircut. I wanted to embrace<br />

that classic ‘elephant trunk’ styling,<br />

leaving a slight disconnection through<br />

the top and sides to keep it modern<br />

image shows my skillset of razor work,<br />

precision cutting, point cutting, fade<br />

work and even a little pattern work. My<br />

model Luke was the inspiration for this<br />

cut. I have been cutting his hair for a<br />

number of years now, so I am very aware<br />

that his poker straight hair makes<br />

shorted styles difficult to style, so<br />

because of this he’s sported a buzz cut<br />

for most of that time. But he wanted to<br />

try something new that would give him<br />

something to play about with and the<br />

skullet/mullet hybrid was the perfect<br />

ALONGSIDE ITS STATUS as City of Art and Fashion, the<br />

French capital is now ready to host the 2024 Olympic<br />

Games. As a tribute, Paris is also staging an exhibition at the<br />

Musée des Arts Décoratifs until 7th April. Mode et sport, d’un<br />

podium à l’autre takes us on a journey back in time, from the<br />

elegant chic of the Twenties through to the revolutionary<br />

attitudes of the Sixties, showcasing, of course, each decade’s<br />

take on fashion in sport. The exhibition focuses on the looks<br />

that defined each era, demonstrating how fashion has, over<br />

the years, embraced functionality without compromising on<br />

style. Under the microscope are also those French fashion<br />

designers who were instrumental in contributing to this<br />

magnificent partnership: Lacoste, Patou, Hermès & Lanvin.<br />

DIVA IS A MAJOR NEW EXHIBITION AT LONDON’S ICONIC V&A,<br />

CELEBRATING THE EXTRAORDINARY POWER AND CREATIVITY<br />

OF ICONIC PERFORMERS.<br />

DIVA is a story of iconic performers<br />

who with creativity, courage and<br />

ambition have challenged the status<br />

quo and used their voice and their<br />

art to redefine and reclaim role<br />

of ‘diva’. It also looks at how this<br />

has been subverted or embraced over<br />

time across opera, stage, popular<br />

music, and film. DIVA also showcases<br />

five key looks worn by global<br />

phenomenon Rihanna, seen together<br />

for the first time ever. The looks are<br />

on display alongside 60 ensembles<br />

and 250 objects drawn from the<br />

V&A collection and loans from<br />

across the world, spanning fashion,<br />

photography, design, costumes,<br />

music, and live performance.<br />

ALTERNATIVE HAIR SHOW<br />

Tapestry was the theme of this<br />

year’s Alternative Hair Show which<br />

took place on Sunday 15th October<br />

at the ICC Capital Suite at ExCel<br />

London. It saw 14 outstandingly<br />

creative teams from around the<br />

world come together to help raise<br />

an incredible £121,000 for<br />

Leukaemia and blood cancer<br />

charities. The night was testament<br />

to how art and charity can support<br />

one another in the most wonderful<br />

way, bearing in mind that Alternative<br />

Hair has raised over £14.5 million<br />

so far. On-stage were Alternative<br />

Hair Show Founder, Tony Rizzo, and<br />

President Anthony Mascolo, who<br />

honoured Trevor Sorbie MBE was<br />

then honoured on stage with the<br />

Legend Award, cementing his<br />

incomparable status in the world of<br />

hairdressing. The showalso marked<br />

Experience <strong>2023</strong>, a unique industry flagship event<br />

that marks a remarkable showcase of innovation,<br />

hairstylists from across the globe in Chicago for an<br />

unforgettable event on September 24th and 25th,<br />

<strong>2023</strong>. More than 2.000 international attendees<br />

were treated to extraordinary presentations, an<br />

exciting live hairdressing competition, and<br />

captivating artist performances, all highlighting the<br />

latest trends, techniques, and products that define<br />

the Kao Salon Division family. Beyond an event,<br />

it symbolized beauty industry innovation and<br />

celebrated Goldwell's 75th brand anniversary,<br />

marking decades of innovation and strong stylist<br />

relationships. “At Kao Salon, creativity isn’t just a<br />

buzzword – it’s our DNA,” says Dominic Pratt,<br />

President, Kao Salon Division. “Our commitment<br />

to innovation, imagination and integrity drives us<br />

every day, and Kao Salon Global Experience is the<br />

epitome of this ethos.“

Tell us about Kao Salon<br />

Division's specific strategies for<br />

the Asia market.<br />

There are particular challenges in<br />

all parts of the world, so we are<br />

lucky that our mother company is<br />

in Japan and we are based in<br />

Germany. This helps us to ensure<br />

that we have products and<br />

innovations suitable for the Asian<br />

market as well as the rest of the<br />

world. There are some situations<br />

where global products work well in<br />

all areas, for example, Oribe, which<br />

doesn’t have an Asian version, but<br />

still seems extremely popular there.<br />

Then, for example, Goldwell colour<br />

has an Asian specific line<br />

specifically to cater for the needs<br />

of Asian hair.<br />

How is Goldwell colour<br />

maintaining its superiority over<br />

the many new Asian brands on<br />

the market?<br />

We have a strong and talented<br />

commercial team led by Eddie<br />

Wan, with offices in Hong Kong,<br />

Singapore and Taiwan, as well as<br />

the huge expertise, plus, of<br />

course, our mother company in<br />

Japan. Therefore, we have the<br />

right educational opportunities and<br />

right marketing plan to be able to<br />

compete and win against our<br />

Asian competitors.<br />

What about other brands that<br />

have developed products<br />

specifically targeted at the Asian<br />

market, such as hair colour with<br />

a lighter, more natural look?<br />

Last year we launched Newance by<br />

Topchic, so this is really an Asian<br />

specific portfolio providing exactly<br />

these types of shades. The demand<br />

for them is not so great in Western<br />

markets, but they are highly sought<br />

after in Asian countries. As future<br />

trends evolve in Asia, we will<br />

continue to meet them head-on and<br />

make sure we are always one step<br />

ahead of the competition!<br />

As Commercial Asia VP, what<br />

strategies do you have to address<br />

the challenge of retail product<br />

sales in Asia?<br />

Many Asian hairstylists perceive<br />

salon retail as too much of a hard<br />

sell. However, once they<br />

understand that it’s just a part of<br />

the customer servicing package,<br />

they find it much easier to<br />

embrace. In the USA and Europe,<br />

it’s widely acceptable that after<br />

you get a beautiful treatment in a<br />

salon, you prolong it by continuing<br />

with hair care at home, using<br />

professional products. It is our<br />

duty to convey this message to<br />

our clients across our region.<br />

We’ve recently seen Asian<br />

participants achieving great<br />

success at the Global Creative<br />

Awards. How will you help them<br />

to continue with this?<br />

While Asian hairstylists were seen<br />

to be more imitative in the past,<br />

nowadays they understand that<br />

maintaining their originality is a<br />

prime factor for success.<br />

Therefore, they need to go on<br />

defining themselves by upholding<br />

the idea of Asian Beauty and being<br />

unique in the international arena.<br />

From a brand perspective, we can<br />

do this through our promotional<br />

campaigns and by establishing<br />

artistic teams in various Asian<br />

regions. They must continue to<br />

communicate and exchange ideas<br />

throughout all the regions, so<br />

everyone gets the chance to both<br />

inspire and be inspired.<br />

Many professional hair brands<br />

have expanded their reach<br />

beyond traditional sales platforms<br />

by selling online and venturing<br />

into the consumer market. What<br />

is your view on this?<br />

We must always keep our<br />

principles intact and uphold our<br />

professionalism, remembering the<br />

salons and artists we work with.<br />

They are our partners and<br />

we will always put them first.<br />

When committing to multi-channel<br />

sales, we must be very careful to<br />

maintain consistency not only with<br />

pricing, but also with brand<br />

positioning.<br />

Each channel has its own<br />

advantages and we must learn<br />

how to optimise them when<br />

formulating our sales strategies.<br />

Interaction between hairstylist and<br />

customer is key, as customers can<br />

understand so much more about<br />

product function and application.<br />

Back at its traditional home after four years, Cosmoprof Asia achieved<br />

an outstanding success and much appreciation from the industry.<br />

The 26th edition of Cosmoprof Asia<br />

and Cosmopack Asia once again proved<br />

a dynamic success, exceeding expectations<br />

and maintaining its distinguished<br />

position as the ultimate meeting point<br />

for beauty professionals, industry insiders<br />

and innovative brands in Asia-Pacific.<br />

There were more than 2,400 exhibitors<br />

from 44 countries and regions, with<br />

90% coming from outside Hong Kong.<br />

65,582 visitors from 119 countries and<br />

regions filled the 118,900sqm of show<br />

floor space with a remarkable 64% increase<br />

compared to the previous edition<br />

held in Hong Kong in 2019, bringing<br />

the visitor numbers close to the levels<br />

achieved in 2018 and confirming the<br />

enduring appeal and global reach of the<br />

show. The exhibition’s international appeal<br />

was enriched by this edition’s 17<br />

country and group pavilions including<br />

Australia, China, France, Germany,<br />

Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia,<br />

Poland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland,<br />

Taiwan, Thailand, Türkiye and the<br />

USA.<br />
