Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
it, have much to offer in every season, and we hope this challenge motivates New
Yorkers to get outside in winter.”
fitness levels and offers a range of mileage options, including 1 mile for people with
Dr. Maggs Feet
First System
FEBRUARY 2024 5
SCHENECTADY – The Dr. Maggs Feet
First System, a groundbreaking injury
prevention program poised to redefine
today’s sports medicine industry,
has been unveiled by Dr. Timothy
Maggs, an expert and pioneer in the
field of sports injuries prevention.
Backed by extensive research, this
innovative system addresses a fundamental
revelation, that every human exhibits some degree of collapse in their feet,
making quality orthotics a crucial first step for injury prevention.
Dr. Maggs, drawing upon experience and research, highlights the profound
impact of foot collapse on overall body mechanics and injury susceptibility. The Feet
First System begins with the integration of high-quality orthotics into all footwear.
These orthotics, designed and crafted using cutting-edge technology, serve as the
cornerstone for balancing body weight distribution, reducing strain, and optimizing
biomechanics.
Following orthotics, the system introduces an essential component, which is an
important X-ray to evaluate hip height difference. This assessment determines the
possible necessity of a heel lift, addressing any discrepancies in hip alignment that
may contribute to abnormal loading and potential injury risks.
Furthermore, Dr. Maggs stresses the importance of individualized care, “Each
person’s body is as unique as a fingerprint, and so is their hip height difference-feet
relationship. One-size-fits-all solutions are inadequate. Quality orthotics with the
appropriate x-ray is mandatory.”
“Understanding the relationship between foot biomechanics and overall body
alignment is important. This system takes a holistic approach, as mere millimeters of
imbalance in structural loading can lead to a torn ACL or Achilles tendon compared
to one that doesn’t tear” states Dr. Maggs.
The integration of orthotics, coupled with the proper X-ray, showcases his
commitment to proactive injury prevention and optimizing overall health and
performance. By addressing foundational issues, this systematic approach aims to
empower individuals to lead active, pain-free lifestyles while minimizing the risk
of potential injuries.
Through a blend of research-backed insights and personalized care, the Dr.
Maggs Feet First System marks a significant milestone in the field of injury prevention.
This season marks the 90th anniversary of the
Snow Train that brought skiers to North Creek,
kickstarting generations of winter tourism in the
area. Business owners, historians, and ski enthusiasts are
commemorating this historic event.
The North Creek Snow Train’s inaugural voyage in
1934 transported 378 skiers from Schenectady to North
Creek, launching the region’s winter sports tourism
attractions. Today, in a broad collaboration, the town of
Johnsburg, Gore Mountain, Tannery Pond Community
Center, North Creek Depot Museum, Johnsburg Historical
Society, Revolution Rail Co., Cunningham’s Ski Barn, ski
enthusiasts, esteemed historians, artists, devoted residents,
and local business owners all unite to honor the
rich legacy of this remarkable train.
Throughout the snow season, an array of curated
events will illuminate the vibrant history and cultural
significance of the North Creek Snow Train. These
events include walking history tours of the train station
and North Creek Ski Bowl, screenings of vintage films,
presentations, concerts, artwork exhibitions, fun races,
and commemorative giveaways, among other activities.
Barkeater Chocolates is making a Snow Train chocolate
bar, and Upper Hudson Coffee is labeling the Roosevelt
Roast with the Snow Train logo.
In addition to the schedule of events listed below,
additional details are in development, and more information
will be forthcoming.
All history enthusiasts and aficionados of winter sports
and recreation are encouraged to explore the schedule
of events to find a path to immersing themselves in this
remarkable journey through time. Discover the story of
how the North Creek Snow Train became an indelible part
of the “Ride Up, Slide Down” era of Adirondack history
and the catalyst for generations of winter enjoyment at
Gore Mountain.
History – The origins of skiing in the Adirondacks trace
back to as early as 1903. As this new adventure-filled sport
gained popularity through the 1920s and early 1930s, the
1932 Winter Olympics held in nearby Lake Placid ignited
a fervor for winter sports throughout the region. One that
prompted Vincent Schaefer of Schenectady to organize
efforts to bring Snow Trains to North Creek.
His group lobbied various railroad companies to
establish trips to potential ski areas, including North
Creek and the burgeoning Ski Bowl. The Olympics also
inspired leaders of the American Legion in North Creek
who built several ski trails on Gore for skiers who arrived
via the Snow Train.
On March 4, 1934, the Delaware and Hudson Railroad
Company sent the inaugural Snow Train northward, carrying
nearly 400 skiers from Schenectady to North Creek.
This affordable round-trip adventure, priced at $1.50
(equivalent to $34.70 today), was met with tremendous
enthusiasm, transforming North Creek into a cherished
skiing destination. By 1936, snow trains were departing
from Albany and New York City as well, ushering in an era
of increased tourism that significantly bolstered the local
economy during the Great Depression.
Though the Snow Train era eventually concluded
during World War II, its impact on the history of skiing
remains indelible. Today, we commemorate this storied
past and the enduring legacy of winter sports in North
Creek and at Gore Mountain.
Hour Pond
P
By Bill Ingersoll
H
our Pond is nestled within a secluded basin, and
although it is not really remote, the surrounding
mountains ensure that it seems that way. There is
a lean-to near its east shore and an attractive campsite
near the outlet, either of which would be a fine setting
for a weekend backpacking trip. Bullhead Mountain
serves as a pleasing backdrop, although its position to
the west causes the sun to set prematurely in the evening,
from the perspective of anyone camping on the
east shore. Hour Pond has been known as a recreational
destination for several generations, but an explanation
for its unique name has not yet been uncovered.
There are two ways to reach the pond, and both of
them are very fine trails. This route from Old Farm via
Hour Pond Brook is the traditional route, and the one
better suited for skiing and snowshoeing… assuming, of
course, the occurrence of a traditional winter, which is
scarce these days. But if nothing else, this is still a good
hike with or without winter equipment.
Getting There – Access to this part of the Siamese
Ponds Wilderness – which has much to offer in addition to
this hike to Hour Pond – begins on Thirteenth Lake Road.
This paved byway starts on NY Route 28 in North River
and traces a winding course through Christian Hill and
alongside Thirteenth Brook.
Old Farm Road forks right from Thirteenth Lake Road
four miles from North River. Plowing ends in a clearing
at 0.5-mile – a spot that serves as a winter trailhead
most years. At other times of the year, you can follow the
remaining road into state land and the official trailhead
parking area at 0.7-mile.
The Trail – The wide trail begins with a quick drop that
skiers will appreciate, and others will hardly notice. At 0.2-
mile you reach the trail register and the northern junction
with the Botheration Pond Loop, and at 0.6-mile the trail
to Elizabeth Point, forks right. The main trail then enters
a large stand of Norway spruce, which were planted here
by a prior generation of conservationists as a reforestation
effort. As its name suggests, Norway spruce is not a tree
species that is native to North America; the ones here may
eventually be succeeded by the balsam firs lurking in the
understory.
The site of the Thirteenth Lake House, known as Old
Farm Clearing, is now a much smaller clearing at the heart
of the spruce plantation. A foundation can be seen to the
right of the trail, and a spring to the left. This was at one
time the trailhead parking area, but it is now a key intersection
1.2 miles from the trailhead. The southern end of
the Botheration Pond Loop is on the left; the trail to the
East Branch Sacandaga River is straight ahead; and the
trail to Puffer and Hour Ponds is on the right 350 feet past
the clearing.
Considering the rather sloppy nature of our recent
winters, expect unforgivably wet conditions for the first
tenth of a mile as you head west out of the spruce plantation.
But then the trail passes out of the reforestation
area and descends gently into the fault valley that contains
Thirteenth Lake and Buck Meadow Flow – albeit
without passing within sight of either feature. At 2.2 miles
you cross a bridge over a substantial stream flowing from
the south.
Moments after crossing the bridge you reach the side
of Hour Pond Brook, which is one of the more interesting
parts of the hike. There is an attractive set of cascades and
small waterfalls to your right where the stream tumbles
quickly out of the high country, shaded by a cover of tall
hemlock. There are several streamside perches with good
views of the watery action below. At 2.5 miles, after climbing
100 feet beside the gorge, you cross a bridge over the
brook. The trail turns left on the far side.
The grade moderates, and at 2.7 miles you reach a
junction beside the brook. The trail to Puffer Pond continues
straight, but without a bridge over the deep brook,
that direction is hardly an option in winter.
The trail to Hour leads north. The route is parallel
to the brook, but located far enough up a hill that you
only have occasional glimpses of the open wetlands
to the west. At 3.4 miles, you descend to a log bridge
and a trail junction, where the trail to the right leads to
Thirteenth Lake.
Turn left, west, following the sign for Hour. The trail
leads to a pretty beaver pond at 4.2 miles where you will
need to walk along the top of the long dam, which has a
flat top and seems well adapted to its dual function as a
trail causeway. The trail veers southwest along a wetland,
FEBRUARY 2024 15
then west beside a dry streambed (an overflow channel)
to an open vly, and finally northwest toward Hour
Pond. The approach is prolonged because the trail does
not lead directly to the water, but instead continues to a
former campsite about a third of the way up the shoreline,
where it ends 1.6 miles from the Puffer Pond trail, 3.1
miles from Old Farm Clearing, and 4.3 miles from the Old
Farm Trailhead. This is an attractive spot with a good view
across the pond to Bullhead Mountain.
A lean-to stands 500 feet to the north of this spot, at
the end of a marked side trail. This shelter is located on
high ground with a substantial setback from the water; it
is a decent campsite, but the lack of a view seems to limit
its popularity. Winter might be the preferred season to
camp at such a sheltered spot, except that there are no
good sources of water nearby – when the pond freezes,
the only other recourse is to melt snow.
The other camping option is a designated tent site
located near the pond’s outlet, under a stand of hemlock
trees with a ledge nearby for easy water access.
Hour Pond appears relatively large, but it is remarkably
shallow and therefore not very appealing for swimming. It
is a brook trout pond, though, and it is subject to the same
regulations that are in effect at Thirteenth Lake.
According to a recent Runner’s World article,
despite a pandemic running boom,
most races haven’t reached pre-pandemic
participation levels. One of the most surprising
findings is that big races in many cities
are now selling out more quickly than before, 95
percent of smaller races have fewer than 500 participants.
Let’s show our support for these homegrown,
On Sun, March 30, the 15th annual Schenectady
Firefighters Cancer Foundation’s Run 4 Your Life
5K Run/Walk will welcome you to Central Park
in Schenectady. In commemoration of reaching
of a milestone of 15 years, which nearly half of 5K
events nationwide do not reach, the foundation
has added several exciting facets to this year’s
race. Race director John Daniel Falotico, certified
through Road Runners Club of America, shares
that it’s certified and sanctioned through USA
Track & Field, the governing body for distance
running, and is the starting event of the USATF
Adirondack 2024 Grand Prix Race Series.
Once an event attended by a few score runners,
the Run 4 Your Life 5K has grown to nearly
700 runners and boasts participants from nine
different states. Offering open competition, age
group awards, open team competition, and a
Kids Fun Run, all events are for the prevention
and support of firefighter cancer. A new team category
composed exclusively of First Responders
will hit the pavement along with hundreds of
other runners. As in years past, participants will
take part in the ChowderFest following the run.
Serving as the largest fundraiser each year for the
foundation, the R4YL allows the it to provide preventative
screenings, decontamination cleansers,
and various types of Personal Protective
Equipment to its members. For those who choose
not to run, opportunities for spectators to attend
ChowderFest and the post-race awards party
ensure that everyone will be a part of the fun and
magic that is the R4YL. Sign-up: zippyreg.com.
Also on Saturday, March 30, is the Albany
Rowing Center’s 14th annual Ice Breaker
Challenge 5K, a one-of-a-kind race challenging
runners and walkers against rowers from Albany
Rowing Center. Runners and walkers will travel
along the Corning Preserve’s paved recreation
path while rowers from the Albany Rowing Center
will race alongside in shells on the Hudson River.
It is also a major fundraiser for the Albany Rowing
Center, helping the ARC to expand access to rowing
■ PINERIDGE LODGE DURING
A BOUNTIFUL WINTER.
As a first-grade student in a oneroom
schoolhouse in the town of
Wethersfield in Wyoming County,
Walter Kersch cross-country skied to
school on a pair of skis his dad made with
leather straps. It was just under a mile
each way, but rural roads weren’t plowed
back in 1944.
“We didn’t think of that as cross-country
skiing,” Walter recalled.
Without buses or viable transportation
in the winter months, skiing to and from
school was a necessity.
Eighty years later, Walter, now 86, has
seen his life come full circle as the co-owner
of Pineridge Cross-Country Ski Area in East
Poestenkill, located 14 miles east of Troy.
Situated on over 700 acres of land on the
Rensselaer Plateau with 50 kilometers of
trails, 35 kilometers of which are groomed
for Nordic skiing, Pineridge is celebrating
its 40th season in business this year, with
Walter and his wife, Theresa (also known
as Terri), at the helm since the start.
“It doesn’t feel like 40 years,” Walter
said. “I kind of marvel when I walk on
some of the ski trails, especially at different
times of the year, and see the pattern
and development of all these trails. I look
back and say, ‘How did I ever do that?’”
Growing up on a farm with a father
who logged trees by hand with a crosscut
saw and a team of horses, Walter was
exposed to an outdoor lifestyle and living
off the land. His family’s dairy farm also
sold Christmas trees, and Walter made
extra cash as a child tapping maple trees
and selling five-gallon buckets of syrup to
a local distributor.
After graduating from the State

FEBRUARY 2024 21
■ WALTER GROOMING
PINERIDGE TRAILS.
University of New York at Oswego, Walter
bought a large farm in western New York.
He followed in his father’s footsteps,
planting Christmas trees and supplying
a shopping center in Tampa, Fla., with
thousands of trees over a 10-year span.
Meanwhile, Walter taught math in
Angola and obtained his master’s degree in
Counseling at Canisius College in Buffalo.
He moved to the Capital District in 1964,
earned advanced certification in School
Administration, and met Terri, a research
chemist at Sterling-Winthrop (now
Regeneron), whom he married in 1967.
Two years later, in 1969, Walter
became principal at Berlin Junior-Senior
High School. That same year, he and Terri
bought a house and 10 acres of land in
East Poestenkill. They expanded their
property holdings and deepened their
roots in 1972, purchasing a 400-acre parcel
across the road.
“We tried to think about how we would
share this land with other people, and we
looked at a lot of different options,” Walter
explained.
They considered building a campground
but came up with a new idea
after visiting a small ski center in Carlisle,
Mass., called Carlisle in the Woods.
“We just had such a great time,”
Walter recalled of the day trip with his
wife and daughters, Susan and Heather.
“On the way home, when we stopped to
get a bite to eat, we said, ‘That’s what we
need to do!’”
Aside from skiing to and from school
at age seven, Walter’s ski background
was mainly in alpine as a skier at Kissing
■ LOVELY DAY AT PINERIDGE.
JASON KERSCH
Bridge in western NY and instructor at
Petersburg Pass on the NY/MA border.
With the help of Cross-Country Ski Areas
of New York colleagues, such as Olavi
Hirvonen (Lapland Lake, Northville),
Joe Pete Wilson (Bark Eater, Keene), and
George Heim (Garnet Hill, North River),
Walter began planning trails in 1981 and
opened Pineridge with a new lodge in
place of an old fish-and-game club building
in 1984.
What started with a few kilometers
of winding trails through a dense forest
evolved into 25 trails for cross-country
skiing, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing.
Over the years, Walter and Terri have
purchased four additional contiguous
land parcels for a total of 769 acres along
Poestenkill Creek.
Nestled in the foothills of the Taconic
and Berkshire mountains, Pineridge
boasts 350 feet of elevation gain from
the lodge, and is about a 30-minute drive
east of Albany and 15 minutes from West
Sand Lake.
Walter’s favorite beginner trail,
Meadow Watch, explores an old potato
field with young balsam trees enclosing
both sides of the trail. His favorite challenging
trail, Mogul Twister, took about
three years to create. Its “ups and downs
and switchbacks” lead skiers to the area’s
1,746-foot summit, which offers views of
the Taconic Range and Mount Greylock in
Massachusetts.
The trails are narrow, measuring about
eight to 10 feet wide, and most have a canopy
of trees over them. They are also rich
in history; the Round Top trail follows a
portion of the horse-and-buggy “Albany
to Bath Road,” completed in 1777. One hill
still contains a wooden barrel from that
era, which was built into a spring to water
the horses. Pineridge is home to several
old homesteads and charcoal pits, where
Walter has led hikes for children and
adults to create charcoal drawings.
“We’re not as commercial as most
areas,” Walter noted. “I’ve developed the
trails so that people have a relationship
with the forest.”
After retiring from teaching, Walter
became a certified Master Forest Owner
(MFO) through Cornell University to further
educate himself and landowners on
forest preservation. Today, he meets and
walks with private landowners to discuss
their woodlots and how to care for them.
In the early ‘90s, Walter spent about a
week and a half with his daughter, Susan,
planning a trail under a forked tree.
“We spent a whole Christmas vacation
marking, flagging, doing a little bit of
cutting, not much until you knew exactly
where you wanted it to go, but we wanted
it to go underneath that tree,” he recalled.
Sue’s Trail is still a unique favorite,
and Walter has been creating new trails
up until the last few years.
“As I’m out there and looking around
working in the woods, you see areas that
you want people to visit,” he said.
Walter still works at the lodge every
day it’s open. Until a few years ago, he
was Pineridge’s primary groomer – setting
track and corduroy with a large snowmobile.
As of late January, the Nordic center
was closed due to a lack of snow, warm
temperatures and rain, but they’ll reopen
as soon as they’re able so go visit them!
Over the years, Pineridge has weathered
everything from being open just one
day to a high of 120 days another winter.
These days, Walter hopes for at least 40
days of operation to break even with operational
costs, including employing about
a dozen part-time employees. This year,
he’s expecting less than that. Asked about
the future of Pineridge, Walter wasn’t sure
what is in store.
“A lot of people are concerned about
what’s going to happen,” he said. “It could
be the weather is going to control what
happens… If this continues this way,
Pineridge is going to disappear.
“It’s just so much warmer, and storms
are coming through with rain behind
them or in front of them,” he continued.
On the bright side, owning a cross-country
ski area in the Capital Region has been a
highlight of his life. He remembered buses
of school children coming to ski with afterschool
programs in the ’80s and ’90s. He
and Terri have met visitors from different
states and countries, including Argentina
and Switzerland most recently.
“It’s these people that are coming in,
smiling, and having a good time; that’s the
real reward,” he said.
His grandson, Alex Kibbler, spent his
college winter break working with him on
the trails. Walter noted that his employees,
including Nate Gilbraith and Gerlinde
Wolfe, have brought youthful energy to
Pineridge in recent years. Nate is also a
certified Master Forest Owner.
A longtime member of the town of
Poestenkill’s Conservation Advisory
Council, Walter is a founding member and
former treasurer of the Rensselaer Plateau
Alliance (RPA), which works toward the
conservation of the Plateau’s undeveloped
and unfragmented forests and other
ecologically important areas.
“There’s so many of these things I
knew little about when I started,” Walter
said. “All the emphasis on climate change
has made a lot of people think about really
trying to protect our water, our air and
our forests, and do something about it.
Pineridge has been our attempt to address
these issues, provide conservation of our
forest, and share our forests with our
friends and community.”
Bikepacking 101 – If you’re new to the
term, “bikepacking” is the self-supported
riding of bicycles on multiday adventures in
an ultra-light manner, typically off pavement
(but not exclusively) with a leave-no-trace
ethos. The history is steeped in competition
and gear development to ride longer
and faster establishing a Fastest Known
Time (FKT) on developed routes. There
are two variations, the Independent Time
Trial (ITT), which can begin any day and
time of the year, and the group start known
as The Grand Depart, with a scheduled start
date and time. Competitors carry satellite
tracking devices to document their ride and
as a safety feature. The course is presented
to riders a few weeks before the start to be
uploaded to their GPS devices.
A company called “Trackleaders”
rents tracking devices and provides an
online map of the route for viewing. The
basic rules* are simple: ride as fast as
you can, as safely as you can, alone and
without outside help. No pacelines, no
drafting, no sharing equipment (assisting
with mechanicals is allowed), no caches
(although mail drops are permitted). A
self-supported ride allows for resupply
at grocery stores, gas stations, convenience
stores, lodging at motels, camping
at campgrounds. In essence, anything
publicly available to all riders is fair play.
Riders may leave the route for resupply
or to go to a bike shop but must reenter
the course where they exited. Once the
clock starts, it doesn’t stop until crossing
the finish or scratching. There are no set
sleep/rest periods, it’s up to the individual
to rest as needed without sacrificing
personal safety. Distances vary but there
seems to be a lot of events in the 500 to
1,000-mile range.
*Rules can vary widely event-to-event
and ultimately are up to the discretion of
the race director. Rules have evolved over
the years. For example, it was once acceptable
to have film/video crews document
a rider. However now many organizers/
directors view this as outside influence,
giving those riders a psychological boost.
While not a disqualification, a rider subject
to receiving questionable outside help
or missing part of a route may have an
asterisk placed by their name. This is especially
true during FKT attempts.
Western Ontario, June 2023 – It’s my
day two on the BT 700 (Butter Tart 700), an
800K bikepacking race. I’m at a junction
leaning over my handlebars, staring at the
“Ride With GPS” app that the race director
uses for this event. It’s well put together
with resources and route descriptions.
It’s blistering hot, no shade, I’m low on
water. I’m ready to quit. They’re offering
a bypass around a “rough” section of the
route. The complete route includes the
longer and forewarned “rough” section.
Not only have I registered in the solo race
category, I have also committed to racing
the inaugural St. Lawrence Triple Crown,
so I’m figuring any deviation would at best
award me an asterisk and at worst a disqualification.
In a cloud of dust, a car rolls up and a
nice lady asks if I’m okay. Even though I
assure her I am, she insists on giving me
a bottle of Powerade, an example of what
is known as “serendipitous trail magic.”
Drinking the Powerade reenergizes me
and I stay on course. The “rough” section
turns out to be mostly nice singletrack and
well-worth riding.
Triple Crowns – A triple crown series
combines three distinct ultra-endurance
bikepacking events for a composite finish
time. The original Triple Crown began
in 2012 with three classic bikepacking
events: Tour Divide, Colorado Trail
Race, and Arizona Trail race. All must
be completed in a calendar year from
their respective Grand Departs to keep a
level playing field. In 2023 race directors
collaborated from the BT 700 in western
Ontario, Canada, the Log Driver’s Waltz
(LDW) in the Ottawa Valley, Canada, and
The Adirondack Trail Ride (TATR) in New
York, to create the St. Lawrence Triple
Crown (SLTC). See COMMUNITY 33 ▶
FEBRUARY 2024 33
The SLTC is intended as a progressive
challenge with the BT 700 being the easiest
and TATR (588 miles) the most difficult.
When I’m out there, I remind myself
that I alone am responsible for being there
and it’s my responsibility to finish. An
important fact of bikepack racing is that
for the most part, everyone is facing the
same hardships, and it’s up to the individual
if they will “find the joy.” Here is a brief
recap of my journey:
BT 700, June 2023: 800K, Solo, First
Attempt; 5D, 12H, 10M – I love the start
and finish in St. Jacobs, Ontario, and Three
Corner Brewery. This ride earns the best
singletrack award… And, best hand me up
leftover pizza at the finish line! Also, the
worst hills award, as there’s pretty much
no rolling in to keep your momentum.
The sections labeled “Rough” were actually
great riding. The weather was hotter
and dustier than blazes. One-night motel
stay in Owen Sound, with the best motel
owner ever; speechless he was not when
he learned Jody (my wife) was out there
riding by herself! Another thing, I never
found ground soft enough to put more
than two tent stakes in at a time.
I experienced a Ride with GPS navigation
failure, a Garmin 1030 failure, but
the Gaia app bailed them out for the win.
I learned the moisture warning in the
iPhone “lightening connector” has nothing
to do with severe weather warning. It’s
an awesome event, cheers Matt and Tabby!
Has everything, from dusty gravel roads,
big climbs, out of the way singletrack riding
– and Mennonite horse and buggies.
Log Driver’s Waltz, July 2023: 800K,
Solo, First Attempt; 4D, 16H, 50M –
Almonte, Ontario. Looking for a descriptive
feel for Almonte… X-files? (Maybe it’s
almost being taken out by a dog in the
pitch dark, rolling into town at zero dark
thirty and then looking for a statue hidden
in a diminutive park to finish.) Another
awesome event, this one developed and
organized by Eric and Jen, bravo! Dogs –
chased by more dogs in four days than in
the last 40 years. Kindness is… a stranger
giving me a pizza hand-up. Cold and damp
weather, versus hot and dusty. Travel tip:
bonjour, pronounced “BON-JOR” if you
really wanted a chuckled response from
the Québécois. Best lodging was Irene
and Jerry’s camper in Wakefield, Quebec,
adjacent to Gatineau Provincial Park, plus,
a gaggle of camper kids.
This is a ride that includes navigating
the cities of Gatineau and Ottawa. The
race director, Jen, and friends have an
amazing cowbell cheering crew. I enjoyed
having a trailhead beer with the locals at
their post-ride gathering near Ottawa City.
Loved the hills of Log Driver’s Waltz, many
of which you could roll into – and some
roll over – and some (like everywhere)
required, for me, to shift to two-foot drive.
The final challenge was rolling back into
Almonte, looking for the finish. LDW
memories include chunky gravel roads,
more rideable hills, big city lights, ATVs,
and fast cars.
The Adirondack Trail Ride,
September 2023: 588 miles, Solo, Fifth
Attempt; 6D, 11H, 16M (two hours off my
personal FKT) – No comparison, TATR is
the most difficult, mind-bending, grueling
ride of the three. Not only is it longer, it has
a crushing finish. It’s also the least “massaged”
of the three. My buddy Dan was
out clearing trails, as well as organizer and
chief monkey wrangler Mikey Intrabartola,
and myself. Three weeks before the Grand
Depart, Mikey and I cleared the trail down
to the Boreas River, cutting a half-dozen
dead fall/blow downs. By the time I
got there on my ride, there were over a
dozen new trees down. This frequently
required bushwhacking, also referred to as
“thwacking” when bringing a bicycle with
you, deep into the dense woods trying to
navigate around the mess.
The legendary (for TATR riders) Lester
Flow/Irishtown snowmobile trail (long
abandoned) was much-much worse. The
only purpose-built mountain bike trail is
a short section of flow trail in Wilmington,
about two miles long. And I am not going
to count “The Poor Man’s Downhill!”
Otherwise, the rest of the trails are snowmobile,
hiking or ATV trails. Many never
see summer travel.
To make this year special, it had been
one of the wettest this century. Crossing
the Sacandaga River was uneventful but
the Boreas River was the highest I’ve ever
crossed with water mid-thigh and swift. I
took a hard look at the crossing and feeling
that it might be my only attempt at the
SLTC, made the decision to forge ahead.
Multiple roads and bridges were washed
out. I should have gotten a picture of the
cavernous Johnson Pond Road washout!
Tough hikes, but rewarding natural singletrack,
gravel roads and doubletrack,
low traffic, and locals who “dotwatch”
(the act of watching dots move on a map
during an ultra-endurance cycling race)
on trackleaders.com. There is nothing that
has challenged me more than a lap on The
Adirondack Trail Ride.
Trail Angels, Trail Magic, and People
Along the Way – Trail Magic has become
another sub-controversy, but in its purest
form should be spontaneously provided
by strangers without knowledge of the
event. In Canada, some Trail Angels were
■ TATR BOREAS RIVER CROSSING.
■ LDW GATINEAU PROVINCIAL PARK.
■ TATR DEEP IN THE ADIRONDACKS.
listed on the route sheet. On TATR they
spring up in a more spontaneous grass
roots way. Regardless, I would like to pay
tribute to all the people who provided
food, water and support. They will probably
never know the impact they have on us
when we’re down and struggling. Thanks
to all the dot-watchers, strangers, competitors
and business owners, who are all
part of the adventure. Thanks to the route
developers and race directors who put in
countless hours and effort to bring us all
together. And the bears, and wildlife in
general. (But the bears.)
Finish – Providing I didn’t suffer a
mechanical problem, an illness or injury,
I was confident I would finish. However, I
did not think I would be the first rider to
complete the St. Lawrence Triple Crown
Challenge with the current FKT: 16 days,
16 hours, 16 minutes. While certainly
not a time that will be hard to beat, I felt
good about this finish. I had ridden all the
routes completely, solo, unsupported, and
following the general rules of bikepacking
– and within my personal parameters.
