NYSOGA Winter
Rendezvous
NYS Outdoor Guides Association
has scheduled its 41st annual Winter
Rendezvous this year for April 4-7 at
the White Eagle Conference Center
in Hamilton. The annual conference
is a formal gathering of licensed
guides and aspiring guides, held in
early spring. For licensed guides,
Winter Rendezvous offers educational seminars, first aid and CPR renewals, a business
meeting of the board, annual banquet, merchandise store, and networking
opportunities.
For aspiring guides, NYSOGA provides the training needed to qualify to take
the exam to be a NYS Licensed Guide. This includes water safety, first aid and CPR,
plus guide exam review and to take the exam at the same location. As a bonus,
aspiring guides can network with currently licensed guides from around the state.
In recent years, the rendezvous has adopted the theme of “Voices from the Past”
where a prominent guide from the past is highlighted. This year, at the Saturday
lunch, NYSOGA will have a guest speaker honoring the legacy of past guide and
conservationist, Anne LaBastille. Visit: nysoga.org.
NYS Parks Centennial
“Share Your Story” Project
New Yorkers are invited to mark 100 years of state parks by sharing memories
throughout this centennial year. The digital campaign for “Share Your Story” invites
the public to share stories, photos, and videos reminiscing on their experiences at
state parks and historic sites. The multimedia campaign will run throughout 2024 in
celebration of the Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Centennial.
NYS Parks has developed several methods for people to share their stories, which
are explained online. Text, photos, and videos can be emailed to stories@parks.
ny.gov. People may post to Facebook, Instagram, or X using #NYStateParksStory
or submit text-only stories of up to 500 words using the submission form: parks.
ny.gov/100/story.
Throughout 2024, the public will also have the opportunity to hear each other’s
stories. Stories will be shared on NYS social media channels at @NYStateParks.
Stories will also be posted online: parks.ny.gov.
Total Solar Eclipse
As you’ve heard, on Monday, April 8 just after 3pm, a total solar eclipse will be
passing through western to central NY, and then through the northern part of the
Adirondacks exiting the state through Plattsburgh. While this eclipse travels over
a third of NYS, the entirety of the state will be able to see at least 88% of a partial
eclipse: Albany is 96%, NYC 89%, and Montauk 88%. Experiencing totality is a once
in a lifetime experience. The last total solar eclipse in NYS was in 1925 and the next
ones are expected in 2079 and 2144.
The eclipse will begin in Fredonia, shortly after 2pm. Full totality will begin in
Chautauqua County at 3:17pm, moving to Plattsburgh at 3:25pm. Locations in the
path of totality could experience total darkness for up to four minutes. Check out
a map of the path with the totality timetables. For safety tips, check out I Love New
York’s Eclipse website. DEC will also be posting eclipse information on Facebook
and Instagram leading up to it. Visit: iloveny.com/events/eclipse-2024/safety.
CDPHP Workforce
Team Challenge
MARCH 2024 7
CDPHP and Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club are excited to announce that
registration is now open for the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge, the 3.5-mile
road race in downtown Albany near the Empire State Plaza. This year’s race is set
for Thursday, May 16 at 6:25pm.
Local not-for-profits Wizard’s Wardrobe and Reeling for Recovery will receive
funds from this year’s race. Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free after school one-on-one
literacy tutoring program for elementary school children in the South End. Virtually
all students leave the program reading at a higher level. Reeling for Recovery is a
grassroots not-for-profit organization that helps disadvantaged youth struggling
with behavioral, social, and addiction issues. Through their adventure-based programming,
they educate students on the importance of making good decisions,
setting and achieving goals and reinforcing the importance of academics.
New this year is the introduction of the WTC Training Program. CDPHP is partnering
with ARE Event Productions on this 10-week program geared toward those
who are either new to running or consider themselves beginners. It includes run
coaching as well as strength and mobility training. It’s free with registration during
the sign-up process. The program begins on March 11 and meets in Albany on
Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30pm with additional on-your-own sessions. The
program will be capped at the first 40 participants to register.
The Workforce Team Challenge is organized by and serves as a major fundraiser
for HMRRC. In addition to raising funds for local charities, the race also helps to
fund HMRRC’s college scholarships, grants, and free race programs for local youth.
It’s the largest running event in the Capital Region. Sign up: cdphpwtc.com.
Whiteface Uphill Foot Race
and Bike Race
The Whiteface Races, 21st annual Bike Race and 39th annual Foot Race, will take
place in Wilmington on Saturday, June 1. After taking a break for a few years due
to low numbers, the Whiteface Visitors Bureau brought back the Foot Race in 2023
by combining it with the Uphill Bike Race. Holding the events together proved to
be very successful last year. Cyclists start in the parking lot of the visitors bureau at
5:30pm and are timed at the start and finish line. Runners are staged at the intersection
of Route 86 and 431 in the Adirondack Chocolates parking lot. After the cyclists
clear the intersection, timers start the clock and runners proceed up the mountain.
It’s a closed course allowing cyclists and runners space to ascend the mountain
safety. They climb eight miles and 3,500 vertical feet up the Whiteface Veterans
Memorial Highway to the summit finish with a panoramic views of the Adirondacks.
Sunday, May 19: Farmer’s Daughter
& Granddaughter Gravel Grinder – Now
in its 10th year, the Farmer’s Daughter is
the must-do spring cycling event in the
Northeast. To celebrate, Capital Bicycle
Racing Club has added the Farmer’s
Granddaughter, a 43-mile route with
3,700 feet of climbing, but no off-road
sections! Regardless of which course you
ride, you’ll be treated to some of the most
beautiful scenery in the Northeast, with
plenty of climbing and fun descents to
match. Named after Chatham Brewery’s
Rye IPA, born and brewed in Columbia
County, both rides offer a truly grand
tour of northern Columbia County and
surrounding areas. All riders receive a
Farmer’s Daughter baseball-style cap, pint
glass, and custom name plate. There will
be great food and support along the way,
a meal at the finish, and you can reward
yourself with a pint of Farmer’s Daughter
Rye IPA. The Daughter is 63 miles long with
6,000 feet of climbing, almost entirely on
dirt roads with some sections of off-road –
be prepared for a challenging but fun ride!
This year the combined field limit is 1,600
but don’t hold off because the event has
sold out repeatedly. Visit: bikereg.com.
Sunday, May 19: Team Billy Ride &
Walk for Research – This year is the 20th
annual ride that takes riders from the
Farmer’s Market in downtown Saratoga
Springs on three different routes of 50, 25
and 10 miles through beautiful roads in
Saratoga County. For non-riders, there’s
also a three-mile walk in historic Saratoga
Springs. Team Billy was created to promote
awareness and support to find a cure for
brain tumors. The event involves the community
where Billy Grey lived, in a positive
setting to help further the mission. To
ensure donations have the greatest impact,
proceeds are directed through the National
Brain Tumor Society funding the most
promising brain tumor research. Because
of Team Billy supporters, over $2.8 million
has been raised. Visit: teambilly.org.
Sunday, May 26: Tour de Lewis:
Oswegatchie to Osceola – The third
annual “O to O” is a point-to-point ride
through Lewis County’s scenic Black
River Valley, starting in the Adirondack
MARCH 2024 11
Park at the Oswegatchie Education Center
(overlooking Long Pond) in Croghan,
and finishing in the green state forests
at the Osceola Ski & Sport Center (on the
Tug Hill Plateau) in Camden. The Metric
Century, their main route, takes riders
through 62 miles of farms, forests and
hamlets – crossing Lewis County from
corner to corner. The tour is organized
by Adirondack Foothills Cycling Club,
and includes four rest and aid station
stops along the way. All riders will need
to get dropped off at the start or purchase
a shuttle from the finish line to the start.
Their shorter but challenging route of 29
miles takes riders through rolling hills,
farms and forests. It’s an out-and-back
route from Osceola to the village of West
Leyden and back. Both rides are open to
recreational and competitive cyclists of all
abilities, and e-bikes are welcome. There
will be a celebratory after-party at Osceola
including great food, drinks and music.
RUNNING & WALKING
MARCH 2024 13
■ START OF THE 2022 SALEM
APRIL FOOLS’ RACE 10K IN
SCENIC WASHINGTON COUNTY.
From
Lost Winter to Hopeful
By Laura Clark
Normally, I am fairly sanguine about whatever snow
the fates grant us and am upbeat in my quest for
an endless winter. But not this year. While I have
managed to find snow, mostly in the Adirondacks, it has
been a struggle. Like all winter race directors, I dread the
inevitable questions about snow conditions and long for
Frosty the Snowman’s magic hat.
And while you can pretty much always have a spring
road race because there is pretty much always a road, the
odd weather patterns have impacted us all. Snow enthusiasts,
counting on the white stuff to keep them in shape, were left to
play a waiting game. And even die-hard roadies were derailed
by ice and darkness. It is a good thing that the April race
schedule features a mix of shorter events for the treadmill
set, spiced with some longer excursions for those of us who
persisted despite it all.
April Fools! The 43rd annual Salem April Fools’ 5K
& 10K will be on Saturday, April 13, the weekend after it’s
traditionally held, because of Easter Break when school is
closed. It’s a great opportunity to run in scenic and historic
Salem. The runs begin/end at Salem Washington Academy
(Salem Central School). This race offers a 10K and 5K on
roads through the village and countryside. The 10K (9am)
and 5K (10:30am) are staggered, with a 1M kids race in
between, so it’s possible to run both the 10K and 5K. The
10K is hilly for a scenic tour of southern Washington County
farm country and the 5K is blessedly flatter for those who
are doubling. Look for enthusiastic students as it supports
Salem Central School Class of 2026 and the historic Salem
Courthouse. There will be numerous prizes and fun for all
runners. Visit: aprilfoolsrace.com.
For those of you who’ve been training throughout the
winter, the Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon, directed
by ARE Event Productions, is on Saturday, April 13. It
debuted in 2019, and is a major event in Upstate NY, boast-
ing over 2,000 registrants annually. This is a point-to-point
course so you must pay attention to prerace logistics, but are
rewarded by the rare opportunity to feel like you are actually
running somewhere, rather than overlapping circles. The
start is at Wallace Town Park in Voorheesville and finishes
at Jennings Landing in Albany, on the Hudson River. The
first two miles are on the streets of Voorheesville, the next
nine miles are on the gently descending paved path of the
Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail, and the final two miles are on
the rail trail connector to the Hudson River bike path, with
inspirational views of the Hudson and USS Slater ship. Even
if you are not in tip-top shape by April, the flat course on a
fast surface and net downhill will give you a needed push!
In addition to an awesome experience, amenities
include bus ride to the start, finisher’s medal, post-run
meal, Fort Orange beer, live music and more. The race
website has an amazing overview, worthy of any major
marathon, with its detailed participant handbook, spectator’s
guide, and videos of the route – you’ll be prepared
and know exactly what to expect. The charity of choice is
South End Children’s Café, a nonprofit that provides free
healthy meals, homework help and activities for Albany
youngsters. Visit: zippyreg.com.
A down-home favorite is the 12th annual Bacon Hill
Bonanza 5K & 10K in Schuylerville on Saturday, April 27.
The USATF certified races start simultaneously, with the
5K being fairly flat and the 10K featuring some challenging
hills. Both travel through farm country, with cows and
chickens cheering you on. Children 12 or under may do
the kids run for free if another family member is participating
in the 5K or 10K, making this an affordable family
outing. The first 300 to register will receive a race shirt, so
make sure you sign up early as the handsome shirts are
always eagerly-anticipated. Age group winners receive
a farm-fresh pie and all are invited to refuel with King’s
Dairy chocolate milk and homemade cookies. (Bonus:
stop by the nearby dairy on the way home to enjoy an
ice cream cone and take a few quarts home for later).
The 44th annual Bill Robinson Memorial 10K &
HMRRC Masters 10K Championship will be held at
Guilderland High School on Saturday, April 27. The 10K
is now open for runners of all ages. The race honors the
Bill Robinson, a member of the USATF HMRRC masters
team that won a 10K national title. This event attracts a
high caliber of runners, so if that is you, you are invited to
challenge yourself. Otherwise, come on out and enjoy the
atmosphere of this high-quality race. Visit: hmrrc.com.
The 16th annual Furry Fun Run: 5K for People &
Dogs at Saratoga Spa State Park will also take place on
Saturday, April 27. This was the first 5K in the area to welcome
dogs and it’s a do-not-miss event, and walkers are
welcome too. Proceeds and donations benefit Peppertree
Rescue, a volunteer run organization that finds homes for
good tempered dogs in need, regardless of breed, age or
health. Visit: peppertree.org.
The 44th annual Doc Lopez Run for Health: Half
Marathon & 5K Trail Run/Walk in Elizabethtown on
Sunday, April 28. The Run honors prolific runner and race
director, Dr. Robert “Doc” Lopez, after he carried the torch
for the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics up and over the
Adirondack hills. He shared his love of running with his 14
children and today his daughter, Sue, carries on the family
tradition. The half begins in Keene Valley, then makes a
challenging two-mile trek up Spruce Hill, and towards the
Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown, treating us to
another point-to point experience. One of the attractions
for older or slower runners is there’s no cut-off time so the
course is open until the last person crosses the finish. The
5K trail loop starts alongside the golf course before entering
the wooded trails. The route is hilly, and again offers
rewarding views – but keep a lookout for rocks and roots.
A unique aspect of the Run for Health is its focus on health
promotion. The finish area will have booths offering info
A Journey to Find the Joy
By Kristen Hislop
Much of the time we talk about a running
progression as a journey. You start
and tackle milestones as you progress.
Those could be distance or time goals,
and often you hear the phrase ‘enjoy the
journey.’ For kids in high school and college,
times matter, but you’ll hear good
coaches talk about the process. When
you’re in the middle of a season that
might not be going well, there tends to
be little joy in running. It is all about completing
the workout, hitting the times,
and doing well at meets. This pressure
can come from a variety of places: self-inflicted,
coaches, parents, teammates, and
nowadays social media. As you’ll learn
from Niskayuna native, Lou Serafini’s
story, when the joy is present, great and
fun stuff follows.
Lou grew up tagging along with his
dad, Rocco, who ran at the Summer Track
Series at Colonie High School. His mom,
Annie, started Niskayuna Moms on the
Run in 2000. The group has grown to a
network of 100 women, running various
distances and meeting around Niskayuna,
with the same essence of camaraderie,
support and friendship. While Lou participated
at the Colonie meets and watched
his mom build a running community, he
focused on baseball.
It wasn’t until high school that Lou
found a passion for running. He had done
cross-country starting in sixth grade, but
when he broke five minutes for the mile in
ninth grade, running jumped to the front
seat. He was convinced by the Niskayuna
High School coach to try outdoor track &
field. After learning that if he quit baseball,
and focused on running, a 4:30 mile was
possible, he says, “I did, and then ran 4:22
as a sophomore at a dual meet at Burnt
Hills. I never looked back.”
Louis and Niskayuna Coach Jason
DeRocco have a favorite memory of his
high school career. Lou says, “I have memories
of this crazy triple my coach would
let me do during indoor sectionals. I would
run the 1600 meters, and sit and kick as
slow as possible to try to win. Immediately
after was the 600 meters, and I would race
that. Then, I’d have about an hour to rest
before running the 1000 meters. I did it my
junior and senior year at UAlbany meets,
and both times won the 1600 and 1000
but was never better than second in the
600.” Coach DeRocco also remembers the
time Lou ran the mile at Penn Relays as an
individual. Then he came back the following
day and ran the 4x400 relay so that his
teammates would have the opportunity to
race at the infamous Penn Relays.
Kids sometimes set lofty goals for
themselves in high school. Then, as they
TRIALS IN LOS ANGELES.
look ahead to college, they see the benchmark
times college coaches set to make
the team. Lou had a dream to run the
Millrose Mile, but when he came up short
there, he set out to break 4:20 in the mile.
He ran 4:13 his senior year. With the times
he had posted in high school, colleges
were looking at him.
When asked about choosing Boston
College, he said, “I had it in my head that
I wanted to stay close to home and be in
a city. Boston College ticked both boxes
for me. I was a late bloomer in school so I
knew I could use running to help me get
into a good college, and Boston College
was the best fit at the time.” Running well
in cross-country and track & field is a great
asset to get into the college of choice – let’s
spread that gospel.
About deciding on a program, Lou
recommends, “I would speak with many
different coaches but ultimately, college
is more than just running! It’s a huge part
of your decision but at the same time, it’s
important to prioritize your other needs:
location, education, etc. A good coach and
program will support you no matter what,
so look for honesty and a willingness to listen
when talking to coaches.” As a mom of
two college runners this is very sage advice.
Entering college is a huge transition.
Kids go from being the best to just like the
rest. But athletics can help prepare you for
that. Lou adds, “college was challenging
being a small fish in a big pond so a lot
of it was about adapting, taking what the
sport was giving me, and celebrating the
small successes. There were some wonderful
moments like breaking 25 minutes
at the famed Franklin Park cross-country
course, and winning the 4x800 at the New
England track & field meet. I wouldn’t

trade the relationships built with my
teammates for anything.”
Let’s get back to that journey. We
should all know that it isn’t linear, but
chasing PRs certainly warps our sense
of reality. Shouldn’t it always be onward
and upward? Louis hit plenty of PRs in
high school and then they became a
moving target in college. This story plays
out every year for athletes across the
country, so where does the journey take
you? Well, you’ve got to keep chugging
along to find out.
Post-college Lou has many checkboxes
next to his name. He could have taken it
easy after college and pursued other interests,
but as he eased back a little, the joy
came back. He truly loved running.
When asked about how his training
has changed over the years Louis says,
“I’ve gotten more relaxed with my training
2012 ELLIS MEDICINE CARDIAC
CLASSIC 5K WITH FAMILY.
over the years. Not when it comes to training
volume, but my attitude is more laid
back. In high school or college, I would be
anxious if I had a bad workout or missed
a day of running. Now I’ve learned that
it’s important to listen to your body and
go with the flow. For this past marathon
build – leading into the 2024 US Olympic
Team Trials Marathon in Orlando on Feb.
3, I ran 100-120 miles a week and did two
workouts – one on Wednesday and one
in my long run over the weekend. In high
school I ran very low mileage, which I am
grateful for. I feel like it gave me more room
to grow as opposed to being burned out.”
More relaxed and yet running at the
2024 Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:17:09
and 35th overall! It sounds like it can’t be
true, but when you feel you’ve got more to
give why not? He also ran in the 2016 and
2020 Trials.
“I always felt like there was more in the
tank so I just kept going,” Lou said. “I try to
set little goals to keep me going. First it was
to qualify for the Boston Marathon, then
it was to qualify for Olympic Marathon
Trials, then I wanted to break 14 minutes in
the 5K (13:48 at 5000 meters in 2020), and
break four minutes in the mile (3:59:33 in
2018, 514th American to do it) – a lifelong
chase, my favorite running memory! Then
run 2:15 in the marathon (2:14:59 at 2022
California International Marathon). You
just have to keep raising the bar and giving
yourself things to shoot for. My favorite
running memory is breaking four minutes
in the mile; it was a long chase!”
These days, there’s not much left he
wants to do... Lou said, “I would like to run
a really good Boston and to get as close to
2:10 as I can.” Look out Boston 2025!
Three Olympic Marathon Trials and a
list of PRs post college; all when running
was fun. What about work life? After all,
just because you qualify three times for
the Olympic Trials, it doesn’t mean you
have a lucrative shoe contract! Armed
with a marketing degree, Lou started with
a public relations firm. A Boston College
track alumnus was looking for students
for an internship, which then turned into
a full-time gig – it could have been a perfect
job in Boston. But it was the part-time
weekend gig at Heartbreak Hill Running
Company that brought joy.
After receiving an offer to match his
salary to manage the store, he jumped
into the running industry full-time. After
four years managing the store, he was
tapped to run the Boston Trackhouse for
Tracksmith, an independent company
that makes premium running gear for
training, racing and all conditions. From
there he has moved into a role as head
of global events and community initiatives
which includes sports marketing
and team partnerships. Lou mentioned,
“I’m super proud of what we can do for
amateur athletes at Olympic Trials. We’re
a small company and don’t have budgets
of the bigger brands so we chose to support
150 amateur athletes, instead of just
sponsoring two or three pros. Every athlete
works so hard to get to the next level.
We’ve had some unbelievable athletes go
on to be a pro including Keira D’Amato,
Cravont Charleston and Kara Winger.
We’ve had national champions, US record
holders, and Olympians... It’s crazy.”
Lou continued, “The other half of my
job is organizing community events and
spreading the joy of running to as many
people as we can. I’m lucky to work somewhere
I’m passionate about every single
day.” Isn’t that what we all want and definitely
want for our kids? What advice does
Lou have for those who want to pursue a
career that aligns with their passion? “For
anyone who wants to work in running, it’s
important to say yes to as many opportunities
as possible. Networking and hustling
were the keys for me. Don’t be afraid
to ask questions and work outside your
job description.”
It’s something of a full circle that
Louis fosters an incredible community
for running in Boston and internationally
through Tracksmith after his parents
introduced him to the run community
early on. Lou says, “the cool thing about
community is that it’s not a one-size
fits all; it’s anything that brings people
together. As long as there are people who
are willing to bring people together and
people who want to run, there will always
be community. It’s about consistency,
authenticity and opportunity.”
On the personal side, Lou and his
fiancé, Gabi Drummond, are engaged to
be married later this year. She just finished
her PhD in Neuroscience from MIT. Gabi’s
also an accomplished runner and ran the
Olympic Marathon Trials in 2020. She’s
from Wappingers Falls but they met in
Boston through the running world. They
have two dogs, Meredith a standard poodle
and Honey a mini poodle with three
legs; both dogs love running and routinely
run Lou’s doubles with him.
Locally, Lou makes his annual pilgrimage
home for Thanksgiving, and has
won the Ellis Medicine Cardiac Classic
5K for 15 straight years, and has won the
MVP Health Care Stockade-athon 15K
three times.
Mantras guide and inspire us so I
asked Lou for his: Patient and relaxed
early, aggressive and tough late. When
you’re on a journey, filled with joy and
some frustration to meet your goals, this
is a pretty awesome mantra! Where will
your journey take you and will it be filled
with joy?
Gore Snowmakers Shine
Amid Sparse Conditions
MARCH 2024 41
● EARLY SNOWMAKING ON TOPRIDGE TRAIL.
By Alex Kochon
Anyone who has skied at Gore Mountain in North
Creek, with 108 trails across nearly 448 acres, can
vouch for the superb snowmaking and grooming
this season. The state-owned ski area hasn’t been blessed
with abundant snow – instead, the opposite. Like
other downhill ski resorts across the state and country,
they’ve been dealing with one of the more lackluster
winters on record.
According to Gore Mountain Snowmaking Supervisor,
Dan Feiden, the amount of natural snowfall there has
been on par with the winter of 2015-16, “the winter that
wasn’t,” as he called it. That was his first year as the head of
snowmaking; he managed Gore’s tubing hill before that.
They opened about 50% of the mountain for skiing and
snowboarding that year.
Fast-forward to this season, a similar winter with temperatures
hovering just below freezing most nights, and
Gore’s snowmaking team produced enough snow to open
nearly 95% of their trails. This can be credited to Gore’s
hardworking employees, whose snowmaking team was
one of eight nationwide to earn a nomination in Ski Area
Management magazine’s “I AM a Snowmaker 2024” contest:
saminfo.com. Together with Gore’s grooming team,
they made mountains out of molehills.
Snowmaking typically begins in November when temperatures
allow and continues through January, usually
later. Snow is blown in piles, which groomers push around
to spread evenly over the trails. Sometimes, these mounds
are left for days to let the moisture leach out – especially
when the snow is made during “marginal” air temperatures:
about 16-30 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything warmer
than that is too warm to make snow, and colder (0-15
degrees) is optimal.
“It will typically take two or three nights to get a trail
ready after we’re done making snow on it,” Dan explained.
“The groomers spend the first night or two just pushing
the first piles around to evenly smear it around the trail,
then they’ll do a night or two of grooming with the actual
tillers down and turn it into the nice corduroy that people
like to ski on.”
● GORE’S SNOWMAKING SUPERVISOR DAN FEIDEN.
They start by covering half the trail with snow from
top to bottom. The other half is left for natural snow or
snowmakers to fill in later. They prioritize opening the
trail, then moving snow guns or pushing snow around
as needed. If all goes well, snowmaking can wrap up in
late January, “but that never happens,” Dan explained.
“It’s either Mother Nature is not working with us, or some
equipment maintenance is needed, but more times than
not in recent years, it’s Mother Nature.”
The goal is to make as much snow as possible through
February. “Usually, by then, we’ve been running so much
equipment for so many hours that the mountain starts
seeing enough snow made that we can scale back the
snowmaking.” Dan explained. “Our goal is to stay open as
long as possible.” he added. “The year before last, we went
to the first weekend in May.”
Throughout the season, his team works around the
clock during “cold weather windows,” running as much
snowmaking equipment as possible when temperatures
drop below freezing. This season, they’ve been limited to
snowmaking mostly at night and in the wee hours of the
morning, as their equipment requires temperatures colder
than 30 degrees. While Gore’s snowmakers have operated
most evenings this winter, temperatures have been
mainly in the marginal range, except for a few “optimal”
snowmaking nights thus far.
● GROOMING TEAM’S
SIERRA OLBERT ON
FRESHLY GROOMED
TERRAIN.
● SAFELY SHARING THE TRAIL.
GORE MOUNTAIN/OLYMPIC AUTHORITY
“When we get 90 to 95 percent of the mountain open
on a year like this, it makes me really happy with the
improvements we have made,” Dan said.
In the last eight years, Gore has nearly doubled its
snow-gun fleet to almost 2,000 snow guns spread throughout
four peaks. Some of these are permanently fixed to the
slopes, others are mobile, and hundreds are energy efficient
– producing ten times the amount of snow with the
same amount of air required by an older-style snow gun.
This has resulted in substantial energy savings for
the mountain, bolstered by a recent $1.2-million-dollar
National Grid incentive to cover half the cost of these
high-efficiency snow guns: goremountain.com.
This year, the Olympic Regional Development
Authority, which operates the Gore, Whiteface, and
Belleayre ski areas, purchased 136 energy-efficient,
tower-mounted snow guns for Gore in partnership with
National Grid. A press release stated that these are expected
to conserve more than 2.1 kilowatt-hours per year
while pumping out 190 acre-feet of snow.
MARCH 2024 43
COMMUNITY continued from 41
This makes a big difference for the mountain, with the
most terrain of any ski area in New York. Gore is three
times the size it was two decades ago, yet it uses about the
same amount of energy as it did back then.
“The higher-efficiency system is not just to get it done
quicker, but with climate change and our cold-weather
windows getting smaller and less of them, we have to have
more efficient equipment, or we’re just never going to get
it done,” Dan explained.
The snow guns pull from a reservoir halfway up the
mountain that holds 30 million gallons of water. Since
Gore uses about 300 million gallons of water to make
snow each winter, it pumps up from the Hudson River to
fill the reservoir.
Dan explained that Gore has been using water from
the reservoir since 1976 and additionally drawing from
the Hudson River since 1996. These pipes and snowmaking
equipment require nonstop maintenance, which is a
massive part of the snowmakers’ job.
“When you move 300 million gallons of water through
above-ground pipes when it’s ten below zero, stuff tends
to break,” Dan explained.
His seasonal crew includes about 25 employees, who
work around the clock over three shifts: 7:30am to 4pm,
3:30pm to midnight, and 11:30pm to 8am. They work
closely with the grooming team to ensure they follow the
same plan and everyone is safe, especially when sharing
the trails with groomers at night.
In the summer, Dan can keep about six staff members,
including himself, on his core team. Two of them have
been working at Gore for over 20 years. This marks Dan’s
16th season.
This year, the crew earned their first nomination to
the annual I AM a Snowmaker contest to recognize “the
While they didn’t win, (Greek Peak Mountain Resort in
“We’re the behind-the-scenes guys,” he noted. “Nobody
sees what we’re doing or how we’re doing it. I think there’s
a misconception that you just turn some valves on, go
home, come back in the morning, and everything’s fine,
but you have to be walking the trails constantly.
“Guns and pipes freeze; the system and equipment can
be temperamental. It’s never-ending work,” Dan added.
“If I didn’t have these guys, especially my core group of
year-round guys… I wouldn’t be able to get this stuff done.
They’re the ones who know what they’re doing.”
COMMUNITY
Appalachian Trail Hike
for SkyHigh Adventure Center
The Dream – Just like every kid has
some far-fetched ideas, as a kiddo I had
plans for lots of crazy big adventures.
Flying a cardboard airplane with my
brother Charlie and jumping fire on
bikes like Evel Knievel with my brother
George were just the beginning. I was
lucky to grow up free-range with parents
who gave me freedom and the courage
to take risks. We regularly did 20+ miles
on our bikes and skateboards and even
started skydiving in high school. Our
childhood was filled with sky high
adventures.
In 1974 I went on a weekend backpacking
trip with Camp Scully to Little
Rock Pond in the Green Mountains of
Vermont. We backpacked to a shelter
on the Appalachian Trail where our
counselors gave us time to follow a
stream, scrambling up and down
the rocks. I tripped while rock-hopping
doing a swan dive into three inches of
water, hence my Appalachian Trail name,
Diving Swan!
I didn’t know much about the AT
until we met a thru-hiker on their way to
Maine. The distance seemed impossible
but thought I could do the AT someday.
The Planning – AT planning started
when I was a young man. I enrolled in
mountaineering, winter backpacking,
survival skills, EMT and rescue classes.
I joined organizations with lots of
like-minded folks.
The AT would be the thing I’d do when
I retired, until the pandemic hit and the
trail was officially closed in 2020. I put
off my hike and invested time creating a
not-for-profit, Sky High Adventure Center
(SHAC Center) in Averill Park. The SHAC
has a mission to help others be healthy,
active and engaged. I would head out
on the AT in 2023 and take a break from
the SHAC. Little did I know how hard it
would be to be away and that SHAC would
become my motivation to get through the
hard parts.
During the pandemic, I prepped by
doing research on gear, navigation, hostels,
history, challenges, and highlights of
the legendary Appalachian Trail. I knew
I was going to start
heavy and unload
stuff along the way.
▲ JOHN AND KATHY
SLYER (AKA DIVING
SWAN & SUNSHINE)
AT AMICALOLA FALLS
STATE PARK, GEORGIA.
I got my backpack weight down to 22
pounds, but with a full five days of food
and three liters of water, I would get up
to almost 40 pounds. Getting off-trail in
some areas is not easy; I chose to carry
more food than others and it worked well
for me. The biggest impact of carrying lots
of food was that I would not be able to
trail run as much when I was completely
resupplied.
As my start date approached, the
final plans were set. My wife, Kathy
(aka Sunshine), would hike with me up
Springer Mountain, Georgia on February
25. Springer is the southernmost terminus
of the AT and it’s where most thru-hikers
start for a northbound (NOBO) hike. I
would get off-trail at Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
in late May and flip-flop my hike. Flipflopping
would allow me to hike NOBO
so I could get off- and on-trail for family,
SKYHIGH Adventure Camp and Kids
Triathlon, and to compete at Ironman triathlons
in Texas, Lake Placid and Western
Massachusetts, along with the Bar Harbor
Marathon. During my time home I would
also tackle most of Massachusetts. At the
■ PACER AND DIVING SWAN
AT BLOOD MOUNTAIN
SHELTER, GEORGIA.
end of July, I would then flip up north to
Mount Katahdin in Maine, and return to
the trail SOBO where I would finish the
Appalachian Trail at Harpers Ferry on
October 15. That was the plan.
The Start(s) – I love the feeling of excitement
that I get before doing something
hard and scary. I was excited to meet new
people, and see new places, not to mention
the thrill of trying to do something that has
a 75% rate of failure. What’s so scary about
hiking in the woods or up some mountains?
I’ll be doing it with others, at least when I
start. Will the others be cool, will they be
know-it-all gear junkies, or will there be
people like me trying to do something
hard that they have dreamed of for years?
I met them all. I was excited to push myself
without knowing just how far I would get
pushed physically and emotionally.
My NOBO start with Sunshine went
well and I found that the NOBO portion
of the trip went quickly. There were lots
of thru-hikers and the excitement of the
hike kept us all positive. There was rain,
snow, ice, very cold weather, and wind
that could blow you over – and yet it was
a thrill. Making the first 100, 200 and 500
miles was also thrill that was celebrated
with a trail family. The last miles of the AT
would be celebrated alone in solitude and
with some loneliness.
After completing the southern half
of the AT, Sunshine and I hiked up the
northernmost terminus, Mount Katahdin
on July 31. Katahdin is probably one of the
hardest climbs on the trail and the weath-
er made it even harder. We hiked up the AT
Hunt Trail in cool rain and fog, and came
down the Abol Trail with sleet, adding a
super-steep descent to our already challenging
day. The next day I said goodbye
to Kathy, and headed into the 100-Mile
Wilderness, where I would be out of touch
for up to eight days.
The Trail – The AT is the best marked
trail I’ve ever been on. There are incredible
views and scary exposed places in all
14 states. My favorites were Clingmans
Dome in North Carolina, Mount Lafayette
in New Hampshire, and McAfee Knob on
Catawba Mountain in Virginia, and lots
of great lakes, rivers and streams. It’s got
miles and miles of fast smooth terrain,
and it also has some stuff that is crazy
steep, and needs to be climbed up and
down with care. I had some places where
I could run for five miles and others where
I was lucky to go one-mile per hour. It was
fantastic when I would climb for what
seemed like hours, and then find that the
top of the mountain had incredible views.
I also had times with snow and ice, no
view, and poor trail conditions. They did
not put the modern AT on easy terrain.
The People – The people were the best
part of the AT. We were on-trail for our
own reasons and we had different paths
in life that led us to the trail. We were all
moving with one goal in mind, to thruhike
the AT. We shared the dream of a
big physical and mental/emotional challenge,
and of seeing the legendary views of
the Appalachians. Real bonds form faster
on the trail than I anticipated. My trail
family, especially Pacer and Swiss, will be
part of me forever.
I met thousands of people, especially
when NOBO. There were retirees, high
school and college grads, people between
jobs, and those recovering from hard stuff.
I felt very safe and found that we were willing
to help each other with food, supplies,
phone charges and toilet paper. As they
say on the trail, the trail provides. “Trail
Angels” are those who do special acts of
kindness on the trail. It might be food at a
road crossing, a ride into town for resupply
or a cooler with beer, water and snacks
at a trailhead.
“Hiker hunger” is a term used for the
level of insane hunger hikers feel as they
push themselves day after day. I had to
take in 5,000+ calories daily just to maintain
my energy and not lose too much
weight. Water filtration and hydrating
with electrolyte drinks is also important.
I was usually going through three-to-six
liters a day, not including the water in my
breakfast and dinner.
The hostels were one of the best parts
■ DIVING SWAN AT THE SUMMIT
OF MOUNT KATAHDIN, MAINE.
of the trail. Trail towns usually have
a few hostels where you can rest,
shower, eat and resupply. They are
in sheds, old garages, nice lodges
and the homes of trail angels. Each
hostel has its own vibe and character.
I met folks who have been doing
it for decades and others who are just
starting out.
The Joys and Beauty – I loved the people!
When I started, I found that we were
all bonded by our anxiety and excitement.
The bonds formed during the first several
weeks would be lifelong.
My trail family formed quickly. We
would share our stories, dreams, fears and
histories, and we would laugh, joke and
rejoice as we climbed mountains, passed
our first 100 miles, and took care of each
other when we were injured, hungry and
cold. Even when we parted ways, we’d stay
connected and support each other. I was
also very lucky to have an old friend, Billy,
meet me at Harpers Ferry both times, and
celebrate the halfway and finish with me.
The Hard Parts and Unexpected – The
difficult parts are many and began before I
even got on the trail. I knew it would be difficult
to say goodbye to my wife, and it was.
We were celebrating our 29th anniversary
with friends just before starting and then
I got Covid. I had to isolate myself from
everyone until the night prior to starting
in Georgia. I have a better idea now what
it means that, “absence makes the heart
grow fonder,” as my grandfather said about
how he missed my grandmother when he
was away during WWII.
Hard and wonderful things happen
when you least expect them. I was lucky
enough to get a call from my daughter
when she matched for residency and
then again when she and her partner got
engaged. Unexpectedly, I learned that
our Aunt Julie passed away. I got off trail
to be with family to mourn and celebrate
her life. While off-trail I was lucky enough
to surprise my middle daughter when she
arrived stateside from Army deployment.
At one low point I had to confess to my
daughter Ruby that I was not sure I would
be able to finish the thru-hike.
In terms of physical challenge, some
of the hardest hiking I did was in Maine.
After being off-trail for the summer, I started
my southbound (SOBO) flip at Mount
Katahdin. The weather was tough from the
start. We had rain and sleet on top, and the
Hundred Mile Wilderness and the rest of
Maine, would prove to be very challenging
and wet. The rain and muddy bogs kept my
feet wet for weeks and I struggled to dry
my socks, shoes and feet. Eventually I had
to get off-trail due to “trench foot,” which
is very painful and makes it hard to walk,
and can escalate into an infection that
can do permanent damage. I tried to take
two days off to heal, but then reluctantly
decided to get off-trail, and thought my
hike might be over. I had to admit to myself
that I might not finish my thru-hike. I was
so sad and dejected and now knew what
post-hike depression was about.
I spent the next week healing and
finally went for a trial overnight trip with
my daughter, Caroline. We had a great trip
with just a bit of rain. Thanks to Kathy for
driving me, I was back in Maine the following
weekend heading south again.
The rest of Maine was challenging, but
I had almost a full week without rain, and
my self-doubt was fading. I would continue
to be challenged by big mountains and
cold weather through New Hampshire,
Vermont, Massachusetts and beyond. I
met very few SOBOs and hiked alone for
the rest of the hike, which was tough. I
love people and this was my longest time
completely alone in my entire life. I got
so caught up being alone that I began to
count the white blaze trail markers. I’d
give myself prizes, call family, eat Sour
Patch Kids, look at my watch for each 10,
50, 100 blazes. I did this for days until I got
to 750 blazes in one day and I finally quit
playing my mental game of Pac-Man.
There were times when I wondered if
I was crazy, and it got really hard to stay
motivated when I was alone. Going up
mountains, racing the sun to get to shelters
to heat up water for dehydrated food, and
sleeping alone in the cold was difficult.
I am so glad that I made the hike about
something more than my own dream. A
few weeks before starting, I decided to
raise money for the SkyHigh Adventure
Center. The Sand Lake Kiwanis and Sand
Lake Seniors made the initial $6,000 in
pledges and donations before I even started.
As I hiked, the donations kept coming
in and we surpassed our goal of $22,000
before the end of 2023. Thank you to all
of the donors. I’m not sure I would have
finished if it had not been for them.
The Packing List – backpack, trekking poles, rain gear,
shoes, hiking clothes, camp clothes, hydration, filter, food
for trail and dinner, stove, spoon, cup, tent, communication,
phone and battery chargers, earbuds, and first aid stuff.
The Long-Term Impact – What I was not prepared for
was the level of joy and positivity that has filled my heart,
body and soul since finishing the AT. Early on the thru-hike,
I read about how post-hike depression impacts many folks
when they finish the trail, or are forced off due to injury or
other challenges. I took note of the warnings and thought
about what I would do when I got off-trail. I have survived
and recovered from depression many times and I know
how hard it can be. I have also survived post-race depression
after training and racing marathons, Ironman and
other ultra distance events. It’s not fun. I hoped that my
post-hike plans would help me avoid the negative impact.
I knew that I’d be challenged and put my mind to what
I’d be doing when I got off-trail. I would spend time with
family and friends, get on my bike, do presentations about
the trail, and continue to build the SHAC Community
Center. What I did not expect was to feel so incredibly
positive, grateful and invigorated, that I now get up early
every morning and reflect on all the wonderful things that
make my life incredible. I have found that my appreciation
of all the good things in life has infinitely multiplied.
My wife, kids, community and close friends, as well as all
the comforts of our modern world are incredible things
that I am lucky to enjoy and share. It’s been three months
since I finished the Appalachian Trail’s 2198.4-mile trek. I
feel more alive, productive, compassionate and filled with
love and joy than ever – life truly is awesome!
NON-MEDICATED LIFE
Medicines are a mainstay of
American life and the healthcare
system not only because they are
perceived to work by the individuals
taking them, but also because their
benefit may be shown by the objective
assessment of scientific study. Clinical
research trials have shown that some
of the medicines of Western science
may reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes,
heart attacks, strokes, cardiovascular
death and even some cancers.
In the first 113 installments of the
Non-Medicated Life, a healthy diet and
lifestyle has been shown to accomplish
naturally for the majority of individuals
most of the benefits of medications in
the prevention of the chronic medical
conditions mentioned above. With
respect to a healthy diet, certain foods,
and food “components” may have a
disproportionate benefit. This is certainly
true for dietary fiber. However,
while optimal health may be compromised
by a lack of fiber, actual disease
processes may also result. Until recent
times humans ate as much as 100
grams of dietary fiber per day. Today
Americans may get as little as 10-15
grams a day. Why this is so, the benefits
of proper consumption, and the
consequences of underconsumption
of fiber are described below.
It is generally taken as established
fact that fiber is good for us. For example,
we are told it keeps our bowels regular.
Many folks with constipation have
learned through self-treatment of this
benefit. Consequently, we may search
out products either high fiber cereals,
or fiber supplements like psyllium. But
these are products. In reality, fiber is a
natural part of all plants. When we eat
plants – vegetables, fruits, and unprocessed
grain – we are eating fiber.
It is mostly in Western culture that
fiber is viewed as something separate
that must be added back, because in
some modern western cuisines, fiber
Benefits of Fiber
Revisited
By Paul E. Lemanski, MD, MS, FACP
Editor’s Note: This is the 114th in a
series on optimal diet and lifestyle to help
prevent and treat disease. Any planned
change in diet, exercise or treatment
should be discussed with and approved
by your personal physician before
implementation. The help of a registered
dietitian in the implementation of dietary
changes is strongly recommended.
has, indeed, been removed. For example,
with respect to grains processing has
removed both the germ (fat) and fiber
(an innocent bystander of fat removal)
to avoid spoilage. While white flour may
have been initially developed to increase
shelf life, it has led to its increased incorporation
in many cuisines further removing
fiber from its natural place in the
human diet.
Likewise, modernity, with its de-emphasis
of hunting in favor of a process of
industrialization with animal husbandry
and slaughter has increased the availability
of beef, pork, and chicken. Humans
throughout our history have been omnivorous,
but the number of animals consumed
had been determined not only
by hunting prowess, but also by scarcity.
Animals have feet, plants do not. Although
animals are highly concentrated sources
of protein and fat, they are not always
as easily available for consumption as
plants. Consequently, human biochemistry
became adapted to the consumption
of large amounts of plants and their fiber,
vitamins and antioxidants.
The result of the reduction in the consumption
of plants in the modern Western
human diet – and the consequent reduction
in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants –
has been significant to human health in a
number of ways. I will outline below some
of the most important health benefits of
optimal fiber intake, the consequences of
insufficient fiber consumption, and suggest
strategies to address the shortfall.
Fiber may be classified as soluble (dissolvable
in water) fiber or insoluble fiber.
The former in sufficient amounts will
lower both blood glucose and LDL (the
bad) cholesterol primarily by interfering
with the absorption of glucose and dietary
cholesterol from the gut. Soluble fiber is
found in increased amounts in grains
such as oats, barely and psyllium, in fruits
such as apples and citrus fruits, and in
peas and beans. Insoluble fiber increases
stool bulk and may be found in increased
amounts in grains such as wheat bran and
whole wheat flour, nuts and beans, and
vegetables such as green beans, broccoli,
and cauliflower.
It must be emphasized that all plants
contain a mixture of soluble and insoluble
fibers. An overall increase in the consumption
of a variety of plants may: 1)
reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes,
2) may help in lowering blood glucose
in those with Type 2 diabetes, 3) may
reduce cholesterol and cardiovascular
risk, and 4) may help lower body weight.
The presumed mechanism for weight
loss is based in the relative low-calorie
content of most high fiber foods. When
consumed in sufficient amounts, their
bulk will activate stretch receptors in the
stomach, contributing to a feeling of fullness
and achieve satiety at a lower total
caloric intake.
Conversely, insufficient fiber intake
has the opposite effect on the conditions
mentioned above.
Additionally, insufficient fiber intake
may also increase the risk for cancers of
the breast and colon.
In one study, premenopausal women
who ate six grams of soluble fiber a day
had a 62% lower risk for developing breast
cancer than those who consumed less than
four grams. Looking at a number of other
studies of fiber and breast cancer, it appears
that every 20 grams of total fiber intake a
day may be associated with a 15% lower
risk of breast cancer. The mechanism is
not clear, except that fiber appears to lower
blood estrogen levels, and reduced estrogen
stimulation of breast tissue appears to
lower cancer risk. Unfortunately, American
woman on average eat less than 15 grams
of fiber a day and this intake may be less
than needed to see fibers full benefit. The
Institute of Medicine recommendation for
women is 25 grams of fiber a day and for
men is 38 grams a day.
Insufficient fiber intake may also
increase the risk of colon cancer. In a
large, prospective, population-based
screening trial, total dietary fiber intake
was associated with a reduced risk of distal
colon adenoma, a precursor of colon
cancer, as well as distal colon cancer. In
this study fiber mediated protection
was most strongly associated with fiber
derived from cereals or fruit. Possible
mechanisms may include the dilution
of bowel carcinogens from increased
fiber or fiber derived alterations in the
gut bacterial species (microbiome). In
the latter instance, certain types of fiber
may serve as probiotic food sources for
the growth of healthy gut bacteria.
Increasing fiber in the diet may be
as simple as attempting to consume
more fruits and vegetables to achieve
the above defined fiber targets. But
how many fruits and vegetables are
enough? In research published in the
journal Circulation in 2021, two servings
of fruit and three servings of vegetables,
seemed the most effective combination.
When assessing products
and products containing grains, minimally
processed, whole grains are best.
For example, hulled barley, containing
both germ and fiber has the lowest glycemic
index of any grain and will raise
blood glucose gram for gram the least.
When in doubt about a product examining
the nutrition label and following
Dr. Michael Greger’s suggestion to eat
only those products having a ratio of
carbohydrate to fiber of five-to-one or
less is helpful.
In summary, fiber in Western
society has been largely removed in
processed food. The result may be
increased risk for diabetes, high cholesterol,
cardiovascular risk, increased
bodyweight, as well as an increased risk
of certain cancers. Returning to minimally
processed whole grains, fruits,
and vegetables will help lower risk.
Attempting to consume a minimum of
two servings of fruit
and three servings
of vegetables a day
rather than relying
on a fiber supplement
is more pleasant
and supplies
vitamins and antioxidants
as well.
PAID PARKING IS BAD
FOR SARATOGA SPRINGS.
DON’T
DELAY!
STOP THE PAID PARKING PLAN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE
If Passed, This Plan Will:
Reduce visitation to our city and hurt downtown Saratoga
businesses
Create more traffic and confusion in the downtown area
Cause all Saratoga residents to register their vehicles
with the city in order to park downtown to avoid tickets
and pay to park
Create an unwelcoming and exclusive environment
downtown
Contact the City Council and Mayor NOW!
