Olusosun Park is a mixed-use industrial park that aims to close the loop between waste, resources, and people. Situated in Lagos Nigeria, a major metropolitan center on the Western coast of Africa sits Olusosun Landfill, one of the world’s largest landfills with 14 million tons of existing waste and 11,000 tons per day being produced or imported into Lagos. The gross building square footage is 2.2mil SF, containing programs related to waste management, water management, and community engagement such as a full-size 40,000 capacity soccer stadium with play fields. As waste is collected, sorted, and processed on site, energy is produced in the form of bio-fuel from the 500,000 SF Anaerobic digester, and electricity from the 1.1mil SF waste incinerator. Contaminated water is considered as a part of the waste stream and is treated as such on site through a series of constructed wetlands, equipped with vegetation to remediate pollutants in the water and soil. Black and Grey Water is filtered and purified in the 80,000 SF Aerobic Wetlands, while storm water is directed into the 80,000 SF Detox Wetlands, which target heavy metals as a part of the purification process. All wastewater is then filtered into the 150,000 SF Sedimentation Pond as the final part of the purification process before being sanitized. Since the processing of recycling and treatment of by-products from waste to energy processes requires water, the Decentralized model of water treatment in Olusosun Park is able to isolate and redirect wastewater to be recycled in these locations. The final step of waste and water treatment is redistribution. By providing material reclaim facilities, maker space and market space on site, the current culture of entrepreneurship and inventiveness surrounding waste in Lagos is given a flexible space to flourish while also providing essential resources to the local community. eunoia 11
