ASSISTANT
HEAD COACH
STEPH LIBBEY
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Eppleton
for our league game against Lewes FC Women in the Barclays
Women’s Championship..
I would like to wish a warm welcome
to all the Lewes staff, players and
supporters.
When we played Lewes away, it was an
interesting first half. We ended up 2-0 up
and I thought they played well.
Professionally in. the second half we killed
the game off and did a really good job,
but we know they’ve got a threat, they’ve
signed a lot of new players and they’re
going to come with something different.
We’ve got to be consistent in what we
produce, we’ve got to be on it from the
first minute because they’ve been having
fast starts so we’ll prepare as we do for
everyone in this league.
It’s an exciting league to be a part of
and you never really know what you’re
going to come up against so we’ll do
what we can.
It’s nice to be where we are in the table
now compared to where we were last
year, and there’s been a lot of hard work
gone into that.
For some people it may be a surprise
but for us it’s not, we know the calibre
of players and staff that we’ve got, and
we’ve all worked really hard to get to
this point.
We always talk about the togetherness
and I think personally that is why we are
where we are at.
Enjoy the game,
STEPH
FROM THE
DRESSING ROOM
JENNA DEAR
Sunderland Women midfielder Jenna
Dear sat down with safc.com to discuss
her time on Wearside so far and look
ahead to the game against Lewes.
Moving to Wearside in the summer,
the midfielder has “loved” her time at
the Club so far.
“I love it in the North East. We’ve got
such a great group of girls.
“Knowing Mel previously obviously
helped me to settle in fast and the girls
have been a big help in that.
“I think just looking at the way I’m playing
on the pitch and the way I’m performing
that I’m loving every second of it and I
just can’t wait for the next few games
coming up.”
The Lasses’ number 23 played in France
for Dijon and FC Fleury 91 prior to joining
Sunderland, and compared her time in
the two different environments.
“I think it’s a lot more competitive. In
France, you have a couple of teams that
run away with the league, so it wasn’t
really as competitive.
“Whereas here now, as we seen from the
result at the weekend that anyone can
take points off anyone.
“That’s what makes this league so exciting
and competitive, so like I said, it’s exciting
to be a part of it.”
The 27-year-old highlighted her pride at
the impressive start to the 23-24 season,
but insists there is still a long way to go.
“It’s been incredible. I don’t think anyone
expected us to do as well as we have been
doing, so I think we were going into the
season as underdogs after finishing where
the Club did last season.
“It’s exciting but we can’t get carried
away. We’ve got many more games to go,
we’ve got to take each game as it comes
and see where we end up at the end of
the season.
6

“I think it’s so important to keep that
mindset, to not go into any games being
complacent.”
Finally, with Mel Reay’s side looking
to recover from a defeat last weekend
against Reading in the league, Dear
looked ahead to the test against Lewes
Women at Eppleton.
“We’re out here to prove a point this
season. It’s a massive game for us, like it
is for them.
“The Reading game wasn’t up to our
standards in certain parts of the game,
but towards the end, playing with 10
players, it’s always difficult.
“Three points is what we need to come
away with from that game.”
