HEAD COACH
MEL REAY
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Eppleton
for our league game against Southampton FC Women in the
Barclays Women’s Championship.
I would like to wish a warm welcome
to all the Southampton staff, players
and supporters.
It seems like a long time ago but the
Lewes game was an unbelievable game to
be a part of and it was a vitally huge three
points in the end.
Southampton are a very good team,
they’ve got some good individual players,
swo we know we’ve got to be on our
game to get something from it.
The team don’t need any added
motivation from me, they know exactly
what they want and hopefully they’re
going to go and get it.
The team is evolving and growing
so how we set up and played against
Southampton at St. Mary’s is probably
different to how we play now because of
the extra tools we’ve now got, the team
is learning more and building better
relationships.
We’re really happy with the chances
we’re creating, we’ve just got to be
really ruthless and put games to bed
really early.
I think there’ll be loads of twists and turns
before the end of the season because the
five teams are playing each other as well.
We just have to focus on ourselves, make
sure we keep doing the right things to
keep us within contention.
We’re just looking forward to getting
back on the pitch and after the break at
the weekend and international players
coming back, we’re excited to see what
we can do.
Enjoy the game,
MEL
FROM THE
DRESSING ROOM
KATIE KITCHING
Katie Kitching sat down with safc.com
to share her delight at her first goals
for New Zealand on international duty
and look ahead to the game against
Southampton.
Kitching represented New Zealand as
they won the OFC Olympic qualifying
tournament to qualify for the Paris
2024 Olympics, and she discussed her
experience while away in Samoa.
“It was really good, it was nice weather to
be playing in but a great experience and
one I’ll remember forever.
“I got 90 minutes in the first game then
came on as a sub in the next four games
so it was a good experience to play with
the group of girls that were there.”
The midfielder scored her first two
goals in national colours as the Ferns
beat the Solomon Islands in the final,
with the Black Cats star emphasising the
“amazing” moment.
“It was amazing. Of course I left it until
the last game to do it so it was a relief at
the time.
“Now looking back, it was a great feeling
and I was really happy to get those two
goals.”
With Olympic qualification secured, the
Lasses star talked about the importance
of qualifying and highlighted her joy of
being a part of the team and potentially
being involved in the prestigious
tournament.
“That was our aim at the start of the
tournament to qualify so to do that was a
great achievement.
“The hard work starts now to get
picked for that and for the upcoming
camps as well.
“It would mean everything and it would
be such an honour, but I’ve just got
to keep working hard and putting in
performances for the Club.”
6

“I’m really happy, anything to help the
team get the three points on the Sunday,
but hopefully more will come between
now and the rest of the season.
“They’re a good team, we’ve played
them twice already so we know how
they’re going to play and what they’re
going to bring.
“Ultimately it’s on us to see what we can
do and if we can be clinical to hopefully
get those three points.”
CLUB NEWS
INTERNATIONAL BREAK
Five Sunderland Women players recently
represented their respective countries
during the international break.
Katie Kitching and the New Zealand
Ferns qualified for the Paris 2024
Olympics after winning the Oceania
Football Confederation Olympic
Qualifying Tournament.
Kitching played 90 minutes in the Ferns’
6-0 win over Samoa, playing 45 minutes
against Vanuatu to win the group.
The Lasses number 10 scored her first two
goals in international colours in the final
against the Solomon Islands as they won
11-1 to secure Olympic qualification.
Liz Ejupi netted the only goal in Kosovo’s
1-0 victory over Hong Kong in the Turkish
Cup friendly tournament, with the Black
Cats striker scoring again against Estonia
as Kosovo won 3-0.
The Sunderland number 37 came on as
a substitute in the final game to help the
side to a 1-0 victory over India as Kosovo
won all three games.
Katy Watson represented the England
U19 squad, starting the first game as
they were defeated 3-2 by France in a
friendly. The young striker then came
off the bench as the Lionesses drew 2-2
with Norway.
Niamh Boothroyd scored her first goal
for Northern Ireland U17 - a piercing
long-range strike into the top corner
from the left wing – as they won 5-1 over
Malta in the Euro U17 qualification group
stage game.
The Lasses academy star then scored in
the following fixture to help her side to
a 4-1 victory over Luxembourg.
Mary McAteer joined up with Wales’
senior team and was in the matchday
squad as they won 2-0 over the Republic
of Ireland in a friendly.
